No word on Captain Callahan

I could be wrong, but Ryan Callahan’s contract will probably get done closer to Thursday (the arbitration date) so don’t hold your breath this weekend.

We touched on it yesterday, but in case you haven’t seen it, the new Winnipeg Jets unveiled their new logos. I think they’re pretty cool (plus I like the name; I like any name that isn’t one of those singular deals, like Lightning or Avalanche).

I also like the Maple Leaf in all the logos. And the colors. Can’t wait to see Big Buff in one of these uniforms. He’ll look like an aircraft carrier.

So those are the Jets’ new logos over there ——>

On this byfuglien hot weekend, maybe youse will have a little more time at the computer than usual.

If so, do me a favor. Go to the LoHud (and Rangers Report) Facebook pages and “like” us. We’re trying to build it up. I hear that there could be a prize, an iPad, for one of us who brings in more fans. I’m not really thinking about that because I don’t know what I’d do with an iPad. I mean, can you stick it under the leg of a wobbly chair?

Anyway, please take a minute, if you don’t mind, and go “like” both of these:

The LoHud Facebook page.

And the Rangers Report Facebook page.

Finally, here’s the link to the column I wrote for The Journal News and about the boxer from the early 1900s, who had his memorial stone dedicated in Yonkers yesterday.

    morning ILB and all!!

I hope everyone has a great time at the most interesting man in the world’s house!! Wish we were there!!

If you want an “uplifting” movie to watch, try the boy in the striped pajamas…sheesh!

  2. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

So we have a 48 hour window for buyouts after cally signs whether it is after his hearing or immediately after he signs on monday for instance? Correct??

  3. Morning gang!

To all going to ilb’s- have a great time! I’m so jealous of you all and I would be there if I was still living in NY.

Forgot to do this yesterday, so.. Welcome aboard John! Can you make a sandwich and send it to St Louis intact? :)

I like those new Jets logos. Very clean and both modern and old school at the same time. And I love love love the maple leaves (leafs?) on them, too.

Too add to the jockey talk…Javier Castellano is poised for another big year at ‘Toga and Nick Zito, after going 0 for 24 in last year’s meet, finally won a race yesterday. Mike Smith was a long-time fixture up there, tons of guys who just did the NY circuit- Belmont, Aqudeuct, ‘Toga, Finger Lakes. Another interesting point is that NYRA (which got lucky when the NYS legislature re-ratified them as running the tracks AND gave them a 20 million loan, just a few years ago) makes likes 75 percent of its money at Saratoga even though the Spa season is only 40 days long.

Ok, gotta go run some errands and hope to not melt. Laters all!

  6. “speaking of saratoga, mrs wicky’s grandfather used to call the harness races there!!”

Simple harness racing? I’m sure he was really yearning for some full contact chariot racing, though.

    Oops, you said Mrs Wicky

  7. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

yes, I hope they are all ok and sad about the losses…unbelievable the death toll from the one guy on the island!

    whoa, amy winehouse found dead

  9. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

Yep, say no to drugs kids, mmmmm kaaaaayy!!

  10. Logo’s are cool….but I’m not seeing the retro. They look very new wave to me.

Can’t imagine what is going thru Boogards brother’s head. Basically he had to live with the fact of suppling, and maybe even killing he’s brother. Then as a topper, the Police are charging him for those facts, plus he screwed with a potential crime scene. Being a retired Police Officer, those actions are not good, and he obviously paniced once he found his brother. And it may costs him he’s freedom, on top of his guilt. Wow!

    Suicide watch without question.

  11. Not at ilb’s. In the city with no Internet. No contract for Callahan and 100 degree weather yet again. Who made a lot if bad choices this weekend?

  12. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

ah got it, bit slow on the uptake this morning. Guess it wasn’t al queda, but another fanatical religious group!!

  13. Terrible news about Amy winehouse. Another person that needed help and didn’t get it. And she was amazingly talented

  14. In regards to el crisis de Norway, it’s terribly sad, but with the HDIs and every single poll out there grading countries, Scandinavia seems to be the one area that could handle these sorts of things. They are economically stable and their populace is behind them. Good luck, Norway. You’re in our thoughts. Hope MZA didn’t lose anyone, same goes for the RR Norwegian contingent.

In regards to Amy Winehouse, nobody deserves to lose their life that young, and it’s sad, but does it come as a surprise to anyone? She’s been a drug addict since, well, I don’t remember her not being one. It’s hard for me, personally, to have sympathy for someone who chose her path. It’s equally as terrible no one tried to help her, but. I digress.

RIP all who lost their lives this weekend.

Did Prospal really sign in Columbus? If so, good for him. He can be in a top six role and contribute a lot to a young team.

    Now, Callahan!

Off topic, but just a brief response to Eddie,Eddie, Eddie from previous column posting…

Yes, I did get to Del Mar a couple times. Old barn in those days, which I understand is quite modernized, now. One day they had an autograph table featuring Eddie Arcaro, Johnny Longden, and Johnny Adams. I got autographs from and chatted with all three. Sadly, I lost my program that they had all signed, even before leaving the track, that day.

I told Eddie Arcaro that I saw him ride the great Kelso in New York and asked him if Kelso was the greatest horse he ever rode. His terse response was typical of that tight-lipped industry: “He was a good one.”

  25. OMG! OMG! OMG! Sally is here too! I had no clue. Laurel, apparently, knew it all along… Anyway, Carp, Sally said :”Good afternoon, Carp!”

  26. Boom Boom Bathgate on

My understanding of the Prospal signing is that he will be getting two minutes ice time, per game, in the warmups only, to go with 24/7 “clubhouse mentoring” duties so that the younger players can be around someone they are in awe of, even though he is all washed-up and just hanging on for the money. This in turn will rev up their game so that they score double the number of goals they would otherwise have scored, were there no experienced, “mentor” around to inspire them.

The last kid to get demoted to the minors out of training camp, so that Prospal can be carried on the active roster, will be mentored by Prospal “To take it like a man and show a good attitude, so that one day, you too, can become a highly-salaried clubhouse mentor, who can’t play anymore worth spit.”

  35. The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Vinny Prospal to a one-year contract.
General manager Scott Howson announced the move Saturday but did not disclose terms of the deal. The Blue Jackets were in need of a top-six forward because Kristian Huselius suffered a torn chest muscle and will miss the start of the season.
The 36-year-old Prospal has spent 13 seasons in the NHL and appeared nine times in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He has 227 goals and 453 assists in 978 career games, including 9 goals and 14 assists in 29 games last season with the New York Rangers and one goal in five playoff games.
He previously played for Philadelphia, Ottawa, Florida, Tampa Bay and Anaheim.

  36. has Calla-holdout sign yet? He probably wants like 5 million a year for 6 years! I don’t think he deserves it! We shouldn’t pay him the money he wants based on his potential. He’ll negotiate his way right out of the town! He can’t even put a full season together! If he doesn’t hit (224 hits with fourth most TOI, compared to Dubisnky’s 270 hits with only 19 seconds more TOI per game), he virtually invisible out there! He doesn’t have a good shot, he can’t win faceoffs(i don’t care if doesn’t play center!!) , he’s OK on PK and PP. He is minus 19 in the last two season. He’s overrated!

Per Brooks: Unless theres dramatic shift, Callahan headed to arb on Thur, sides not close enough yet on longterm.

If Callahan goes to arbitration, he most likely won’t be Ranger this time next year…

I cant seem to figure out the hype over this guy, I cant.

I think cally deserves joey crabb money!

The most important part of Calla-holdout’s game is that he talks to the refs! It starts and ends there! I’m sure ORR and wicky will definitely be in this camp on Callablowski. no way the guy deserves a letter IMHO!

I’m not a Cally hater, I’m a realist. He has real talent and potential. He has to learn to play a full season.

If Cally is second on your team in scoring with, your team has problems… like I said, not drinking the cally kool aid yet. He only plays well when paired with Dubinsky! And we know how *INCONSISTENT* that no good mother-trucker is!

finally Callahan’s days are numbered (right, eric?). the rift btwn him and Sather will continue to grow. i am getting real sick and tired of dubi crap. sign the contract already.

  37. Callahan contract guesses 3 yrs (4, 4.5, 4.5) for 13m or 4 yrs (4, 4, 4.5, 4.5) 17m. What do u think?

  38. Gift of GAB-orik on

Callahand me money hasn’t signed yet? George Hamilton signed with Columbus? Amy too much Wine in the house died at 27? Tough news day.

    What a byfuglien psycho.

  41. Average cap hit for 3 yr contract is 4.33 and the 4 yr is 4.25. Correct me if I’m wrong, dubis hit was 4.2.

  42. Gift of GAB-orik on

We overpaid Richards, Boyle, Anisimov, Sauer, and Dubinsky. We might as well overpay Callahand out all the money you can.

His signing will be a bust, like all the signings before him, and our future draft pick busts will sign wretched contracts too.

The only Cup we’re gonna see is the one that has our alcohol of choice in it, as we’re drowning our sorrows and trying to wash away the sadness of our team with a wave of alcoholic haze.

  43. Reasoning is that after this yr callamity is UFA and would likely want more money for his first Ufa seasons.

  44. Don’t get any ideas, Carp. It was Sally. She, apparently, doesn’t drive on IPhone, she had to use mine.

On the other note, Julie’s mom made homemade Italian coookies. Again, it your heart out, ‘heads! :-)

I havent heard anyone mention the fact the pashnin will be playing in north america this year. which to me is awesome cause everyone thought he would be hard to pry from khl. I see him as our stay at home tough next year.. Also good bye vinny you were a leader in the locker room and a play maker on the ice. Great signing for the jackets..

  46. Dan, pashnin is going to make the tie breaker even harder during training camp. We need to trade someone or make a package deal for a top lw, we have too many defense prospects.

  47. Boom Boom Bathgate on

AAEEE – We tend to like the best horses we have seen run, and to a lesser extent, those we like but had to settle for seeing on TV, or, in the case of Man O’War, via old film clips.

Accordingly, my all-time favorites run from Man ‘O War, to Native Dancer, to Santa Anita Handicap winners Royal Glint (Dan Lasater Barn), and “the white horse,” Vigors. Also Forceten from Neil Drysdale’s barn in the 70’s, and the magnificent-looking Exceller, with eyes as beautiful as I have ever seen for a racehorse.

Also, as a kid, I loved Needles, 1956 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner. I remember when Needles won the Derby I had to miss seeing it on TV because I was at boarding school, west of Philadelphia, and we were lining up to go into the cafeteria for the evening meal, as the race went off. One of my classmates saw the race in the recreation lounge, and told me that when his horse, the Rex Ellsworth colt Terrang (Swaps’ stablemate), was leading over the first half mile, he was so excited he was throwing chairs around. Wish I had had the guts to thumb my nose at protocol, at risk of censure, to see the race, but in those days I was a bit shy and easily intimidated. Decisions, decisions, etc.

    Thanks for asking.

  48. Boom Boom- You’re right regarding your 2:35 post ’cause you old farts have nothing worthwhile to contribute. :P
PS. Joe Bravo said he left his whip at your …uh, Joe wants his whip back :P :P

Best of luck to Vinny anyway.

CCCP- You’re putting people to sleep with all those stats,. yaawn :)

  49. Dantherangerfan on

holypuck I agree something has to give. When you have so many prospects lined un for spots on defense its time to trade for pieces you dont have.. (A la left wing)

  50. Dantherangerfan on

yet im not sure the rangers know which guys are going to make the leap to the team. So its a game of chance.

  51. Dantherangerfan on

I was one of the people saying with should package AA, a d-man prospect, and a draft pick for a solid winger. But im not so sure anymore because i think we will regret a trade involving AA

  52. Good Luck to Vinny. He was a heck of a player, warrior and leader for this team. Wouldn’t have minded to see him back, but I honestly don’t know how well his knees will hold up.

Saw the news on Amy Winehouse and honestly, no shocked at all.

Sally made it to ilb’s? Dangit!

  53. ThisYearsModel on

What the Byfuglen is with these Canada based teams and the maple leafs on their uniforms? Are they concerned that the US clubs and fans will forget that they are based in Canada? The players are from all over the world. Sheesh.

  54. Dantherangerfan on

Where the cracked corn is everyone today…theres a heatwave am I the only cave dweller

  55. eddie,

Got a lot done in a short amount of time, so that’s good. Happy to hear that even though Prospal’s not back here, he found himself a new home. How about you?

  56. Just think of the chain reaction Sally would have set of by announcing her attendance, it’s really quite scary.

  57. I’m having a rough day, I forgot to take my little blue pill for spelling, not sure if I should double up though.

  58. Ddebened, correct, way too early for trades, gotta love the 10% extra cap space rule, but it would be foolish to not listen to an offer or contemplate possible moves. I’m not totally against packaging arty, but I think he’s going to be a special player and that’s hard to part with, but for he right player, it should defiantly get a good look from the org. That being said, I think were too high on arty to contemplate a reasonable trade for him.

  59. Dan, a package for an elite LW is probable later on in the season. I’m not sure well completely make out on the deal but if it brings us a cup, it’ll be well worth losing some young guys.

  60. Here are a few LW I wouldn’t mind hearing deals/packages for: Parise, Gagne, Booth, Nash, Semin, Kunitz. As for what they get in return. Top prospect, AA, 1st or 2nd.

  61. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

wow, nice job with the pasting earlier. Too bad dubi only had 141 hits.

if we base cally’s contract per season with princess dubi’s..
based on hits, he should get 6.67 mil per season

based on fights with guys bigger (monitarily) than him, he should get 2.1 million

based on points, he should get 3.73 mil

Just wanting to partake in the game as well.

  62. Most likely prospect would be hagelin if they need a forward, valentenko or kuntratek if defense. Obviously we should try to unload a d-man.

  63. Associate assistant eddie eddie eddie on

Boom Boom – have any favorite races?….Mine were probably the Affirmed – Alydar rivalry…….Every race I kept betting against Affirmed….I just loved Alydar….Just loved that horse….

  64. Gagne? Simon Gagne? He’s far from elite. His best years are behind him. A big fat hell no to him, and Chris Kunitz. I wouldn’t mind Booth, but I’m not trading Artie for him, especially after two major concussions. His brains probably look like goop right now. A massive +hell no+ to Semin. he’s just another player that will quit on you, when it matters.

I’d love Parise, but the Devils are not trading him to NY, if they re-sign him, which they will, and Nash is definitely the best of the bunch, but we’re getting rid of the most important parts of our team to bring him in. Step-On, Artie, Callahan, Dubinsky, Stahl, Girardi, etc. Three or four of those guys, plus Kreider, 1st round pick, etc.

Doesn’t seem worth it to me. But, that’s just my opinion.

  65. If they want proven nhlers instead of picks and prospects, well then were dealing with the wrong team.

  66. It ain’t easy winning a cup, sometimes guys need to go for it to be feasible but I like the descriptions of the aforementioned wingers. Any other wingers u had in mind?

  67. I don’t have any wingers in mind, because I’m not thinking of trading anyone, aside from our spare garbage.

Yeah, you need to make sacrifices to win the Cup, but Gagne, Kunitz, Booth, and Semin are not making a significant change to the team.

  68. Wicky – Problem #1 is Dubi gives you, nuts, chocolate and caramel in one candy bar.

Your buying three different candies and selling them as one

  69. Very true orr, we have a number of guys that can are interchangeable and that sort of flexibility makes injuries easier to deal with and also gives our players room to excel and regress within the lineup/system. But its the summer and there is not much else to discuss so its fun to bounce info around and see what turns up cuz u never know what’s cooking in the head office.

AAEEE: Favorite races = great topic. Attended Kelso winning the Suburban Handicap, with Arcaro aboard, of course, at Aqueduct on July 4, 1961. Kelso beat Kentucky Derby winner Carry Back, in that one. Also attended Kelso winning the Woodward Hcp. at Belmont Park, that Labor Day. Saw a young Buckpasser rout a field at Hialeah in March, 1966. That was one beautiful physical plant.

Was there – Hollywood Park, on July 3, 1977, when the Johnny Longden trained J.O. Tobin wired the previously undefeated Triple Crown champion, Seattle Slew. The capacity crowd went nuts over Slew during the warm up, as he warmed up, away from the rest of the field, on the back stretch. From mass hysteria to mass depression in just over two minutes. Everyone was in shock over the result, as you can imagine.

Favorite race I witnessed, of all, has to be the Santa Anita Hcp. of 1976, won by Royal Glint. I was on Angel Cordero and Lightning Mandate, where the betting was concerned. They finished third. 16 horse field was as strong as any I have ever seen. It included four of the greatest fillies and mares in racing history – Tizna, Dulcia, Dahlia, and Allez France. Look up their career records, they were all brilliant.

Also witnessed John Henry, carrying too much weight, lose a tight finish to Interco in the 1984 Santa Anita Hcp. Was at the track with my best horseplayer friend and he was devastated. He just loved John Henry. He was making arrangements to visit John Henry at the retirement farm in Kentucky, when the news came in that he had died.

I have some great memories of the breed, the trainers, the jockeys, and both great and terrible days at the mutuel windows. Horseplayers live on the cutting edge, don’t need any uppers or downers to get through the day. lol.

  71. I can’t see the Sabs accepting that deal. They’re losing 30-40 goals, and one of their key players, and they’re getting a defensive d-man in return. I can’t see Hagelin replacing his numbers, so they’ll have to be patient with him. Our first round pick isn’t that special, since it will be in the middle of the 1st round.

I think we’d have to sweeten the pot.

  72. Boom Boom Bathgate on

By the way, great call of the Seattle Slew – J.O.Tobin match up can be accessed at Youtube with the dramatic voice of Harry Henson calling the race.

  73. Hey, we can start with girardi and see where it goes, for vanek I would be willing to give a little more then usual, just because I have a good buddy from college that is a diehard sabres fan and it would be great to take him off their roster. The only problem is that buffalo has as solid d-corps if not more solid then our own.

  74. bull dog line on

Buffalo just spent a boat load of money to make a run this season. they are not trading Vanek.

  75. If you want Vanek, you’ll need to give them one of Cally or Dubinsky, and then some.

If they did trade Vanek, I don’t think it would be to us. We just don’t have anyone that can replace his production, and like you said, they have a pretty well set defense.

  77. Regarding trades,
So many young players are still emerging; it leaves lots of questions.
I say let players continue to develop, if we believe in our guys their value to us or their trade value can only grow.

  78. Associate assistant eddie eddie eddie on

Boom Boom – Greatest story I ever heard about Seattle Slew was told by Angel Cordero….Slew had an inside post, I forget, and this is first time that Cordero had been aboard the great fighter…… and as they are waiting the other horses to enter the gate, Slew firmly plants all four legs on the ground and begins deep breathing, psyching himself up, completely understanding what was going on…breathing deeper and deeper…..Angel said that he had never seen this before which is something given this was later in Slew’s career and Cordero had obviously seen plenty by then….

  79. Boom Boom Bathgate on

AAEEE: I have seen a horse psyche himself up, just once, also. That was Vigors, in the saddling barn, prior to his San Antonio Hcp. winning tune up, for his subsequent Santa Anita Hcp. victory in March, 1978. My impression at the time was that trainer L.J. Sterling had him on vitamin pills. I have, in my wallet, to this day, a winning ticket on Vigors for his Santa Anita Hcp. victory on March 5, 1978.

  80. ilb,
just get home – that’s for Laurel, if she still awake, she strongly ordered me to do that.
Overwhelmed with positive impressions, will analyze later. One for sure, so far, the best day spend this summer – cant say enough thanks to your absolutely adorable wife and you of course. The Day should be envied by many.
