We touched on it yesterday, but in case you haven’t seen it, the new Winnipeg Jets unveiled their new logos. I think they’re pretty cool (plus I like the name; I like any name that isn’t one of those singular deals, like Lightning or Avalanche).
I also like the Maple Leaf in all the logos. And the colors. Can’t wait to see Big Buff in one of these uniforms. He’ll look like an aircraft carrier.

Too add to the jockey talk…Javier Castellano is poised for another big year at ‘Toga and Nick Zito, after going 0 for 24 in last year’s meet, finally won a race yesterday. Mike Smith was a long-time fixture up there, tons of guys who just did the NY circuit- Belmont, Aqudeuct, ‘Toga, Finger Lakes. Another interesting point is that NYRA (which got lucky when the NYS legislature re-ratified them as running the tracks AND gave them a 20 million loan, just a few years ago) makes likes 75 percent of its money at Saratoga even though the Spa season is only 40 days long.

Yes, I did get to Del Mar a couple times. Old barn in those days, which I understand is quite modernized, now. One day they had an autograph table featuring Eddie Arcaro, Johnny Longden, and Johnny Adams. I got autographs from and chatted with all three. Sadly, I lost my program that they had all signed, even before leaving the track, that day.
I told Eddie Arcaro that I saw him ride the great Kelso in New York and asked him if Kelso was the greatest horse he ever rode. His terse response was typical of that tight-lipped industry: “He was a good one.”

My understanding of the Prospal signing is that he will be getting two minutes ice time, per game, in the warmups only, to go with 24/7 “clubhouse mentoring” duties so that the younger players can be around someone they are in awe of, even though he is all washed-up and just hanging on for the money. This in turn will rev up their game so that they score double the number of goals they would otherwise have scored, were there no experienced, “mentor” around to inspire them.
The last kid to get demoted to the minors out of training camp, so that Prospal can be carried on the active roster, will be mentored by Prospal “To take it like a man and show a good attitude, so that one day, you too, can become a highly-salaried clubhouse mentor, who can’t play anymore worth spit.”

Prospal signed with Columbus
The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Vinny Prospal to a one-year contract.
General manager Scott Howson announced the move Saturday but did not disclose terms of the deal. The Blue Jackets were in need of a top-six forward because Kristian Huselius suffered a torn chest muscle and will miss the start of the season.
The 36-year-old Prospal has spent 13 seasons in the NHL and appeared nine times in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He has 227 goals and 453 assists in 978 career games, including 9 goals and 14 assists in 29 games last season with the New York Rangers and one goal in five playoff games.
He previously played for Philadelphia, Ottawa, Florida, Tampa Bay and Anaheim.
has Calla-holdout sign yet? He probably wants like 5 million a year for 6 years! I don’t think he deserves it! We shouldn’t pay him the money he wants based on his potential. He’ll negotiate his way right out of the town! He can’t even put a full season together! If he doesn’t hit (224 hits with fourth most TOI, compared to Dubisnky’s 270 hits with only 19 seconds more TOI per game), he virtually invisible out there! He doesn’t have a good shot, he can’t win faceoffs(i don’t care if doesn’t play center!!) , he’s OK on PK and PP. He is minus 19 in the last two season. He’s overrated!

Dan, pashnin is going to make the tie breaker even harder during training camp. We need to trade someone or make a package deal for a top lw, we have too many defense prospects.
AAEEE – We tend to like the best horses we have seen run, and to a lesser extent, those we like but had to settle for seeing on TV, or, in the case of Man O’War, via old film clips.
Accordingly, my all-time favorites run from Man ‘O War, to Native Dancer, to Santa Anita Handicap winners Royal Glint (Dan Lasater Barn), and “the white horse,” Vigors. Also Forceten from Neil Drysdale’s barn in the 70’s, and the magnificent-looking Exceller, with eyes as beautiful as I have ever seen for a racehorse.
Also, as a kid, I loved Needles, 1956 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner. I remember when Needles won the Derby I had to miss seeing it on TV because I was at boarding school, west of Philadelphia, and we were lining up to go into the cafeteria for the evening meal, as the race went off. One of my classmates saw the race in the recreation lounge, and told me that when his horse, the Rex Ellsworth colt Terrang (Swaps’ stablemate), was leading over the first half mile, he was so excited he was throwing chairs around. Wish I had had the guts to thumb my nose at protocol, at risk of censure, to see the race, but in those days I was a bit shy and easily intimidated. Decisions, decisions, etc.

Ddebened, correct, way too early for trades, gotta love the 10% extra cap space rule, but it would be foolish to not listen to an offer or contemplate possible moves. I’m not totally against packaging arty, but I think he’s going to be a special player and that’s hard to part with, but for he right player, it should defiantly get a good look from the org. That being said, I think were too high on arty to contemplate a reasonable trade for him.
Dan, a package for an elite LW is probable later on in the season. I’m not sure well completely make out on the deal but if it brings us a cup, it’ll be well worth losing some young guys.

Gagne? Simon Gagne? He’s far from elite. His best years are behind him. A big fat hell no to him, and Chris Kunitz. I wouldn’t mind Booth, but I’m not trading Artie for him, especially after two major concussions. His brains probably look like goop right now. A massive hell no to Semin. he’s just another player that will quit on you, when it matters.
I’d love Parise, but the Devils are not trading him to NY, if they re-sign him, which they will, and Nash is definitely the best of the bunch, but we’re getting rid of the most important parts of our team to bring him in. Step-On, Artie, Callahan, Dubinsky, Stahl, Girardi, etc. Three or four of those guys, plus Kreider, 1st round pick, etc.
Doesn’t seem worth it to me. But, that’s just my opinion.
If they want proven nhlers instead of picks and prospects, well then were dealing with the wrong team.
I personally think our team has a better shot at winning the Cup, as is, then trading these guys, and bringing Rick Nash in to round out our top line.
It doesn’t matter if you have the best top line in the NHL, you’re not winning the Cup if you don’t have the depth!

AAEEE: Favorite races = great topic. Attended Kelso winning the Suburban Handicap, with Arcaro aboard, of course, at Aqueduct on July 4, 1961. Kelso beat Kentucky Derby winner Carry Back, in that one. Also attended Kelso winning the Woodward Hcp. at Belmont Park, that Labor Day. Saw a young Buckpasser rout a field at Hialeah in March, 1966. That was one beautiful physical plant.
Was there – Hollywood Park, on July 3, 1977, when the Johnny Longden trained J.O. Tobin wired the previously undefeated Triple Crown champion, Seattle Slew. The capacity crowd went nuts over Slew during the warm up, as he warmed up, away from the rest of the field, on the back stretch. From mass hysteria to mass depression in just over two minutes. Everyone was in shock over the result, as you can imagine.
Favorite race I witnessed, of all, has to be the Santa Anita Hcp. of 1976, won by Royal Glint. I was on Angel Cordero and Lightning Mandate, where the betting was concerned. They finished third. 16 horse field was as strong as any I have ever seen. It included four of the greatest fillies and mares in racing history – Tizna, Dulcia, Dahlia, and Allez France. Look up their career records, they were all brilliant.
Also witnessed John Henry, carrying too much weight, lose a tight finish to Interco in the 1984 Santa Anita Hcp. Was at the track with my best horseplayer friend and he was devastated. He just loved John Henry. He was making arrangements to visit John Henry at the retirement farm in Kentucky, when the news came in that he had died.
I have some great memories of the breed, the trainers, the jockeys, and both great and terrible days at the mutuel windows. Horseplayers live on the cutting edge, don’t need any uppers or downers to get through the day. lol.
I can’t see the Sabs accepting that deal. They’re losing 30-40 goals, and one of their key players, and they’re getting a defensive d-man in return. I can’t see Hagelin replacing his numbers, so they’ll have to be patient with him. Our first round pick isn’t that special, since it will be in the middle of the 1st round.
I think we’d have to sweeten the pot.
I do think that Girardi is good trade bait though.
NYR fans don’t appreciate him as much as they should. Other GM’s definitely would.

Buffalo just spent a boat load of money to make a run this season. they are not trading Vanek.
If you want Vanek, you’ll need to give them one of Cally or Dubinsky, and then some.
If they did trade Vanek, I don’t think it would be to us. We just don’t have anyone that can replace his production, and like you said, they have a pretty well set defense.

Boom Boom – Greatest story I ever heard about Seattle Slew was told by Angel Cordero….Slew had an inside post, I forget, and this is first time that Cordero had been aboard the great fighter…... and as they are waiting the other horses to enter the gate, Slew firmly plants all four legs on the ground and begins deep breathing, psyching himself up, completely understanding what was going on…breathing deeper and deeper…..Angel said that he had never seen this before which is something given this was later in Slew’s career and Cordero had obviously seen plenty by then….
