Dubinsky locked up for four years, $16.8M

137

God, I love that Twitter widget over there ——>

On a day when there’s news, it really does its job.

So Brandon Dubinsky and the Rangers avoided arbitration at the last second, and you know what? The deal is the right one for everybody. If it took a little longer than you’d like, or if it cause a little more discussion than it should have, it came out right in the end.

Four years, $16.8 million is right about where Dubinsky should be slotted, and for a long enough term that is good for both the player and the team. It isn’t too much, it isn’t too little, for either side.

Good job by Glen Sather, and by Dubinsky’s side, too.

Now Dubinsky has to “get it” to another level. Last year, when he was probably the team’s first-half MVP, it seemed he figured out the idea of consistent effort, of moving is feet, finishing every check. That fell off a bit in the second half. Some of that might have had to do with the leg fracture, but some of it sure appeared to be his concentration level.

And, despite all the flack he takes in our comments section, this is a really good hockey player, a cornerstone player, a guy who does a lot of everything for his team. He’s a guy other teams would love to take off the Rangers’ hands. He’s a keeper.

    I love Biron.

Carp – are you surprised that someone named “dubi” has concentration issues? :)

doodie – if only edzo and the bald one could depart somewhere as well….

  4. Doodie, don’t know all the details, but I imagine he will be doing the lion’s share of the Versus games now. Good for him, good for hockey, bad for the Devils. Also, it appears NBC/Versus is taking its partnership very seriously (as is NBC/Golf Channel). They might have hockey for a long time.

I think gabby got his fair share of criticism over the season and if not for the brich signing, a lot more people here would be calling for his head so to speak.

The reason dubi is perceived selfish by some here is his hold out. Like it or not, he did it and so the selfish “label” by some, warranted or not. There is not a person here that can honestly say that dubi works harder than cally, NO WAY! Therefore, cally is considered more of a heart and soul guy than dubi because he brings it on a more consistent basis.

What makes it worse are all the “dubi is the second coming” crowd that see zero fault in anything he does. Perhaps if that crowd was a bit more realistic, calling dubi what he is, a very good player with a hell of a lot of potential, is inconsistent, and makes some questionable “negotiating” decisions. There might not be as much dissent among the posters here.

So people that see zero fault in dubi are griping because some see zero fault in cally’s game?? REALLY??

    27nyr94
so is dubi the star in the making or not? if he is, then he deserves some criticism and needs to step it up, if he isn’t….well, guess I don’t understand your post…

I think carp’s description of dubi is right on, too bad not everyone is that objective!!

  6. Good for the young man! Now, he needs to go out there on the ice and “GET IT DONE”. I’d like to see him reach at least the Conference Finals before this contract is up.

  7. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (A cheapshot artist and wiseassen...) on

I wonder if the cally situation even goes to arbitration? My guess is it doesn’t and it gets done fairly quickly.

  8. Very fair contract for both sides.
What he heck happened to Sather? He has actually been making really wise moves this off season. Next he just needs to sign Cally for a similar time frame and a little extra “Captain” money. I guess the only real question now is will Eminger to be signed?

    ————–

of course you are! or that blood went down instead of up! LOL!!

on the previous thread eddie 3x said something about me saying “hard on” when talking about Dubi and how people should not be HARD ON him. Then Carp puts a new post and your name appears first..just a name and i post “hard on” right under it…so it looked like “Manny hard on” comprende? ;)

  12. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (A cheapshot artist and wiseassen...) on

  14. Wow! I’m happy! I’m relieved!

    Du…..binky!!

Not only is he locked up semi-long term, which to me, four years makes me comfortable, but Slats stood his ground, and didn’t let Dubi’s dipshyte agent steal any more cash.

Great deal! I’m happy with both sides, because they used their brains!

Now get Cally locked up, and more importantly, Mrs. Eminger, and we’re good to go!

    Weeee!

  15. Mister Delaware on

I’m curious. What if Callahan goes to arbitration after Dubinsky didn’t? Will Orr now talk about Dubinsky and Callahandout or something like that?

  16. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (Our D is soft like PLAY DOH!!!) on

    orr
    you look relieved!

Just don’t give dubi a letter!

  17. Wicky
My point was that Dubi is talked about and criticized as if he IS supposed to be the star or at least the NEXT star, when actually he is like Carp said “a really good player” and “a keeper”. I think at 25, he has yet to come close to his potential. So as long as keeps improving the way he has, he is certainly deserving of his contract – but not the constant undeserved bashing by supposed fans.

  18. It’s not aboot going to arbitration, it’s aboot holding out for the entire summer, through training camp, through the pre-season.

That bugs the hell out of me. I don’t like it! And, I’m positive Callaman wont do that.

  19. eddie eddie eddie on

manny – would you agree that either cally will get a multi-year dear or he wont…”hard” to see it any other way…

  20. Doodie Machetto on

“That bugs the hell out of me. I don’t like it! And, I’m positive Callaman wont do that.”

Well, he can’t. The Rangers have 48 hours to decide on the award from the arbitrator.

  21. Wolfman: [watching a video of planes being shot down] This gives me a hard on.

    Hollywood: Don’t tease me.

  22. Eddie – good point. Either Cally will or will not get that deal which means he will either be a Ranger or not be a Ranger. These are important distinctions. If he is NOT a Ranger then he won’t be wearing a NYR uniform.

  23. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (Our D is soft like PLAY DOH!!!) on

Slats is handing out multi year dears now?? What the hell is he doing?

  24. Just askin’. What’s the excitement in watching guys ride a bike? Are you just hoping that a guy in the pack falls and there’s a chain reaction and blood and guts are all over the road? Other than that I don’t get it as a spectator sport.

Good job by Sa…..Sath…Saaaath…..you know who I mean. I figured Dubi would get about 4 million. I don’t know if what’s his name has done anything right this off season, but he hasn’t done anything wrong.

  25. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (Our D is soft like PLAY DOH!!!) on

doesn’t that also mean he may or may not get the C?

  26. Of course, it was all set to go to arbitration where Dubi was going to ask for $25m a year until he was knocked over by the breeze caused by the office door opening. As he lay on the floor unable to get up, his only option was to accept the low-ball multi-year deal in the $4m range that most of us crazies expected he would get…

  27. Exactly Wicky – Cally may or may not be captain and he may or may not be a Ranger. Being a Ranger does not guaranty him the Captainship of the Rangers but it’s hard to see him being Captain of the Rangers if he is on a different team.

  28. Great. That got worked out. All these pieces seem to be falling into place. Uncle Larry got this all fubarred this morning. I bet Cally gets an identical deal. Wasn’t all this predicted weeks ago? Not by me, but it seems I read that all these signings and all these $$$ amounts have been mentioned before.

    Oh well. Good for us.

  29. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (Our D is soft like PLAY DOH!!!) on

    Cross check
probably about the same excitement as watching some guys hit a white ball and then go chase it, or a bunch of guys driving around in a circle, or a bunch of guys trying to throw a ball in a basket…yada yada yada…what ever trips the particular individual’s trigger

  30. Praise be to RR. Seriously, this website makes everything hockey related and non-hockey related that much more awesome.

I think the Dubi-Dubi-deal is just about right. Glad they avoided arbitration.

Doc leaving MSG makes a difference for us, in that it’ll be a little harder to watch Devils broadcasts if the Rangers aren’t on or at a commercial or intermission. Different start time, too. For the Devils fans, however…

Oh, that’s right. They don’t have any.

  31. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (Our D is soft like PLAY DOH!!!) on

wonder what is up with Anton Gustafsson, he cleared waivers

  32. ORR, did you purposely spell his name “Dubinky” earlier? I kind of like the sound of it actually.

  33. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (Our D is soft like PLAY DOH!!!) on

There are really very few players I dislike (briere and dan boyle come to mind), it is usually unrealistic fans of certain players that make me resent the players themselves.

    LMFAO!!!! POST OF THE MONTH!

  35. Hey all! I’m alive, no worries! Been out of town and offline, and now I gotta run :(
    Yay for Dubi!!!!!! Later!!!

  36. This is off-topic, and entirely nerdy of me, but if there are any FF fans out there, Spoony put out his review for X-2. It’s absolutely hilarious.

If you don’t understand this post, don’t worry. Those who do will know what I’m talking about.

  37. Boom Boom Bathgate on

I didn’t hear whether it’s a done deal that Cally gets the captaincy, if not, just wondering if Dubi and agent negotiated has a (bonus) clause to that effect in his new contract?

  38. Latona, I’m a huge fan of the FF series however the X-2 game was pretty painful to play. I didn’t enjoy it one bit. FFX, imo, is one of the best games in the series so to me it doesn’t even hold a candle to it.

  39. Doodie Machetto on

“I didn’t hear whether it’s a done deal that Cally gets the captaincy, if not, just wondering if Dubi and agent negotiated has a (bonus) clause to that effect in his new contract?”

Nothing official until camp, as per Torts. However, given that Staal and Callahan had As on their sweaters while Dubi’s was blank, have to think one of them is in line before Dubinsky. Also, Richards has an outside chance at the C as well, and a pretty strong chance for an A.

  40. Lauren,

X-2 was painful, indeed. I didn’t care much for FFX, either, but I’m sort of biased by the fact that in my opinion FFVII is hands down the best game in the series, and also the best console game of all time.

  41. Kid: Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.
Billy Madison: I disagree, it’s a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.

  43. wow just getting a chance to get to the computer. work real busy today.

dubi at 4 yrs 4.2 per season i definitely could live. hopefully in years 3 and 4 he will be more then a 4.2 mil dollar player.

my only concern now is if dubi stays hungry and works hard. sometimes in sports guys get the long term deal and tend to coast. that better not be the case.

def ok with this deal. im hopin in year 4 this contract looks like a steal.

be on with you boneheads for an hour or so.

im shocked about doc emrick. any news who could replace him yet?

  44. eddie eddie eddie on

doc doing play by play – “ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Dubi really smoked that one”

  45. eric,

I don’t think anything’s been announced, but I’d reckon they’d just use Chico along with someone like Steve Cangialosi, maybe? Don’t know if they’d leave the current broadcasting team if unnecessary. Or maybe they’d take a Devils radio play by play man or something.

  46. Cangialosi looks like an elf. Horrible play by play guy though.

Glad Emrick is only doing NBC now. True professional!

Latona, I’m not a fan, I only like that one game for Playstation. It was the one with Cloud. The game took forever to beat. I think there were three discs.

  47. ORR,

That’s VII. It was a truly excellent game. The others don’t really compare to it or do it justice, but there are some acceptable titles. I liked VIII too.

  48. Gift of GAB-orik on

Ok i need some clarification on something here because i’m not 100% on it.

Dubinsky, did in fact hold out 2 years ago did he not? I thought he had a contract, which may have been the last year of his entry level contract, and he was a RFA but wanted more money at that point, and signed his 2 year deal.

“After holding out at the beginning of the 2009–10 season and missing over a week of training camp, Brandon Dubinsky signed a two-year contract worth $3.7 million as a restricted free agent”

  49. I haven’t touched my PS3 in months. Never played NHL11. But, I definitely will buy NHL12, because I’m assuming it will be totally different than NHL10, which NHL11, sadly, was not.

I was the RR king of NHL10. I was rarely beaten! I’m sure I lost all my skills!

I would have even destroyed Greg, if he had the guts to buy a PS3 :P

  50. cangilosi would love that job of taking over for doc. who will be on devils gamenight with daneyko then.

too bad its not chico whos leaving.

doc and billy jaffe could have been nice team

    thanks Orr,

oh and when you get nhl12, let me know, I’ll play you. But i’ll let you get some games under your belt, because i’ve been rocking NHL11 for months.

  54. I remember I played NHL10 against CC, and I was beating him 10-2 as the Canucks, and someone in my house reset the connection, with 10 seconds left in the 3rd period, literally. So, I lost connection, and the game counted as a loss on my record. I was soooo pissed!

  55. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

    Cap Geek Math:

Cap Space left (with Cally and 2 Def. left to include)…..$5.777 mio
Assume Cally gets same $4.2 cap hit…leaves us with $1.577
Assume MDZ then gets added at $1.087…leaves us with $490K

Assume we sign Eminger for $1.0 mio.

Question is what is the penalty for going a litttle biot over the cap…like $600K ?

or are you simply not allowed to do that ?

  56. Yea he had a few things going on. He hasn’t come back with another IP address. I guess he’s pretty lazy.

  57. Doodie Machetto on

Brooks’ article on Dubinsky signing again calls Callahan an “associate captain.” Carp, can you talk to this idiot?

  58. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

I still think the Wolski buyt out is in play, and that will not necessarily be a bad thing

  59. BWAHAHAHAHAH ASSOCIATE CAPTAIN!? What is he? A commodities trader? Associate….that’s hilarious

  60. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

Manny..yes…the Cap Geek site now includes Erixon but not MDZ

  61. “Associate captain” is even worse than “assistant captain.” It’s alternate, for crying out loud.

  62. Gift of GAB-orik on

    Lifetime,

I’m assuming Zuc ends up in Whale-ville, which clears $1.7 mil. Or EC, which clears up almost $1 mil.

When Cally signs, we’ll have 14 forwards under contract. So 2 people are moveable/expendable.

  63. Dubinsky was *not* under contract when he supposedly held out.

    eric

Yesterday you said the Rangers had to get a split in Sweden, now the very first game is a must win? Do you have a degree in morbid pessimism or is it a natural talent?

  64. Like I said a few weeks ago, I think we can trade Wolski, instead of buying him out. EC, we can just stick in Connecticut.

I love that we open up against two tough teams like the Kings, and Ducks. Two great tests to see what the team’s made of.

  65. Do you guys think that Brandon Dubinsky would have get more money in the new contract, when the arbitrator would have awarded it ????

  66. What do you guys think about Drury continuing his carreer somewhere ????

Do you see him returning to the west coast where he is home during off season somewhere in the western conference ????

And what about Vaclav Prospal ??? Do you guys think the Rangers are interested to bring him back to the Rangers ????

  67. Can’t wait to see Dubi blow all his money on alcohol at the club. Higgins 2.0 lol
