The Captain, and his alternates: who will they be? (updated)

515

MORNING UPDATE: Larry Brooks is reporting that RFA Michael Sauer signed a two-year, $1.25 million contract.

AFTERNOON UPDATE: Add Artem Anisimov, who signed on the dotted line today, too (in case you didn’t see it right over there ——>).

According to Jesse Spector’s blog: “Anisimov’s deal is worth $3.75 million for the two years, so it’s $1.875 million per season against the salary cap. The Rangers should have about $11 million worth of cap space to fit Boyle, Callahan and Dubinsky, and keep in mind that they will get a buyout window for 48 hours after the final settlement or arbitration decision.”

Also, good news. We’re going to try to put up a separate widget with the players’ twitter tweetings.

————————————

So Brad Richards is signed, sealed, (approved), and delivered. We now know that No. 19 will be on his back, and on his sleeves.

The remaining question about his outfit is the little letter, or lack thereof, on the front.

See, there’s actually been talk about Richards getting the captain’s C, though none of that talk has emanated from the Rangers’ organization.

I think that’s ridiculous and an absolute longshot. But crazier things have happened, I suppose. I mean, Richards is one of John Tortorella’s boys, and he comes with all kinds of expectations, not only to live up to his contract and turn the Rangers into contenders by pumping up an offense that has been non-existent for years.

He comes with the expectation of leadership.

So I suppose it’s possible that he wears the C. But I doubt it.

Why? Because I think it’s a foregone conclusion that Ryan Callahan would replace Chris Drury as captain. Because I think Callahan would have been named captain earlier if Drury wasn’t around. Because I think Callahan exemplifies what this Rangers team has become, and is the prototype player for the way they play, and is a guy they couldn’t do without last year.

Because this team, which formed an admirable, courageous, fun-to-watch, black-and-blue, “It’s Just Pain” identity last year, is Callahan’s team. It just is. Or “It’s Just His.”

Therefore, I think it would be a mistake to have anybody other than Callahan wear the C. I don’t know anything about Richards or if he’d be a good captain or not. I know he wore an A in Dallas, and that he sure comes with a clutch (uh, oh, there’s that word) resume.

But making him captain could blow up in Tortorella’s face … and again, I don’t think he would put a C on the chest of anybody other than Callahan.

So let’s assume that it’s Captain Callahan. Then who gets the alternate (NOT assistant) captains’ A. Do you give one to Richards over, say, Brandon Dubinsky? Or Dan Girardi? Or Brandon Prust? You can only have three captains for a given game.

Well, here’s what I’d do. I’d go back to the most glorious season in franchise history, when Mike Keenan — who took his leadership group pretty seriously — did it this way: He rotated the alternate captains at home and away. He had four alternates — Brian Leetch, Adam Graves, Kevin Lowe, Steve Larmer.

I’d go the same route. Now, Tortorella might not see it that way. He might see the need for more people to wear letters on their chests. I’m sure he believes that leaders don’t necessarily need letters, and that a good team, especially one like last year’s edition, needs more than three leaders. Or five.

But, still, I don’t think they’d take away the A from Marc Staal — why would you? And I think Dubinsky could use an A, which might help him grow further, take more responsibility and ownership than he already does. I think Richards could/should have an A. And would have no argument if Girardi — based on his Block Ness Monster season that ended in that manly playoff series performance — or Prust, who fought every battle and played through every injury, got a letter, too.

So I’d go with five lettered leaders. The more the better, I say.

What say you? Who would be your three or five?

i don’t think richards needs an A or a C for him to be a leader on the team, there is already going to be a ton of pressure on him and the rest of the players will automatically respect his leadership

  2. I know it is uncommon but I dont mind the A’s being on 2 different players for the home and away sweaters, if there are 4 deserving guys (after the C) then what is the problem? I think its a lot less bogus then doing what the Wild and also the Sabres (I think) were doing a few years back with having a different player wear the C each month of the season. As pointed out in this article, the A stands for ALTERNATE, so whats the big deal if the alternates are different for home games than away, all it really is is the guys who talk with the referee(s) on plays/penalties that require explanations. The guys in the locker room know who the leaders are, whether they have a letter on their jersey or not. For a while now, Dubi, Cally, Staal, and Girardi have been the core of this hockey team, and they all deserve a letter, and I agree that Cally will most likely get the C, even though I think he, dubi, and staal are all deserving, but staal may be a little too quiet for it, a la Leetch, and Dubi may be a touch behind cally in maturity. As for the 5th guy, if it were to be 5 guys (which I dont think Torts will go with) the 5th guy would make sense to be Richards bc of his veteran presence, leadership, and relationship with Torts. Prust plays his heart out but he is still fairly new to the team, as is Richards, but Richards just makes more sense.

But the guy we all forget about, is the real true leader of this team, who I believe cannot wear a letter… Henrik. Henrik is the true leader of the Rangers, not only for his play but for his character and conduct on and off the ice, and his interviews after the game demonstrate that the most. So like I said, even if their only end up being 3 guys with letters, and lets say they are cally, dubi and staal, there will still be plenty of leaders in that locker room, such as girardi, lundqvist, richards, and prust.
I just dont think its fair to dubi or staal to not have an A because of richards coming to NY, as gonyrangers mentioned there is enough on his plate already with the expectations for the offense and contributions on the PP, and i dont think richards will take it to heart not having an A… he’d better not get the C.

  3. I brought this up yesterday. Does Torts stick with the evolution of the NY rangers franchise and give it to Cally, or does Richards get it? I don’t think Richards can come in to a new group, and suddenly represent them. I believe that Richards should probably get no letter, and be there for support of the new Ranger captain. A “liaison” if you will. I briefly thought Richards would get the C, but the dynamic isn’t right. This isn’t Messier.

    C-Cally/Staal/Henke
    A-Stall
    A-Dubi (although Richards wouldn’t be a surprise)

I believe Richards should have no letter and lead by example, and help Cally thru the tough times with Torts.

  4. I think the “C” should go to “whoever earns it in training camp.”

Callahan has to sign a contract first before he is named Captain, but he deserves it. Richards should take Callahan’s former “A” and Staal keeps his. Done.

  5. You’re putting too much emphasis on the symbolic meaning of the “A”. It doesn’t have as much to do with leadership of the team as it has to do with responsibly representing the team on the ice with the officials…yes, the end result is enhanced status on the team. I would be ok with any of those proposed, and agree that Callahan deserves the “C” but Richards may get it based on experience…BR certainly doesn’t need the enhanced status or resonsibilities but it may come with the high salary. Personally, I would prefer that Cally gets the “C” and cringe at the parallel between a Richards “C” with a Drury “C”

  6. Cally – C
    Staal – A
    Richards – A

    It’s that simple.

Had the Rangers not signed Richards, the other A would have gone to either Dubi or Girardi.

  7. Boom Boom Bathgate on

“C” stands for “C”allahan, not Richards.

Girardi, Staal, and Dubi merit strong “A” consideration. My longshot for an “A” would be Stepan, in that I think he can step(an) up his production and I detect some leadership capability in him, with a bit more maturity. Remember, Chicago gave their “C” to a 20 year-old, a couple years ago, and we know what happened for them, in hockey lore, just a year later. In fact, all those “mature” captains in Chicago for 48 years didn’t lead the Black Hawks to the promised land, as did the kid. So giving an “A” to an upside young player is not that big a deal.

Of course, no captaincy for a FA signee is my stated position on the matter, but I might be a bit more tolerant as regards a trade acquisition who shows his mettle gaining that recognition and status. Either that or I am oblivious to and ungrateful for Mark Messier’s contribution, here. But please, Rangers, no FA captaincy on the heels of the Pizza Face disaster!

  8. I agree with CW. Imagine if Richards gets off to a slow start, it would be Drury part Deux in here.

  9. LinCaptainCallahan on

You guys know who I vote for!

Lets NOT give the C to a guy who has not played a second in the sweater for this team. The only time that was appropriate was Messier, because, hell he was Messier and already had a Champions resume. I don’t mind the Pope getting an A, but not the C. Cally has earned it, especially over the past 2 seasons, and what better way to solidify the ‘core’ concept, than by bestowing the honor upon one of the core guys, a homegrown Ranger who never quits?!

  10. Avery should get the C for the six minutes Torts allows him to play. Lundqvist can have it for the rest of the game but only until he gets traded for choking away the 48th shot of the game after saving the first 47.

    That should satisfy everyone.

  11. 5. Love the Glory Days thinking.

    C= Capt. Callahan

    A= Dubinsky, Staull, Richards, Fedotenko

  12. leetchhalloffame on

Forget a letter for Girardi. He’ll be the first d-man to go when the other youngins’ step up to the NHL.

  13. Good morning, boneheads!

Disclaimer: I don’t think it’s that important. The letters, that is. Especially the As. But, just to join the discussion. Carp’s logic about 5 letters makes sense, but knowing Torts, I doubt he will go with that. Just because he tends to keep things simple.
Callahan represents what this team has accomplished over the last few years. He gets a C. Staal hasn’t done anything to take the letter away. And Richards gets one for his experience and for what he was brought in to this city.

    So there you go:

    C- Callahan
    As- Staal, Richards.

  14. Give the C to Callahan and the A’s to Staal and Dubi. When Dubi gets hurt you can turn it over to Richards if he is deserving.

  15. i believe sauer made 550k last year so he got a 750k raise. is that correct on his salary from last year?

  16. Totally agree Carp. That’s what I would do. While Richards is a great player, he’s not Messier, so I don’t think he deserves the Captain’s C coming in as a new player. The team is built around the young core, and I think Cally deserves the C. I think Duby would do an A proud, and I do think he’s a leader on the team and certainly carried the team at times last year. Staal is the unquestioned leader of the D. The only quibble I’d have is with Prust, but I think for his hard work, I’d have no problem with him getting an A. And Richards should have an A to cement his place on the team.

One interesting thought….maybe Gabby should get one to keep him interested. Afterall he’s SUPPOSED to be a leader on the team, certainly based on his performance 2 years ago, he would have gotten one. And maybe it’s what would kick him in the butt. Was he an A in Minnesota? I forget.

  17. sauer 500k 2010 2011-12 1.25 mil. 750 k raise. the kid deserves it. thats a fair deal

  18. In my head…Artie still has something to prove. Sauer proved it. So Artie should get less than Sauer. I guess there is the possibility of a sophomore slump for Sauer even though technically it wasn’t his rookie season.

  19. Yes, eric…Very fair. And I like 2 years. If he shows he belongs, he’ll get another contract. Something is starting to click within our management, eh? Where is Olga?

  20. One year doesn’t prove anything yet, Manny. AA, on the other hand, has shown steady improvement. He deserves his new contract.

  21. Richards already said he feels the pressure. Give him the “C”? Nyet

    Good deal on Sauer.

Btw, what’s become of all the Sather jokes. R u guys hibernating or has Slats been given clemency.

  22. Being in NY is enough pressure. Being a Ranger brings even more pressure. Wouldn’t making BR Captain bring blowing a gasket pressure? Yes, a player feels more responsibility to perform, in any sport, when they’ve got a “letter.” Expectations are high enough already. There’s no reason why he can’t lead by example. The other players will gravitate to him if he proves himself worthy.

  23. CTBlueshirt on

As much as Sauer proved he can play at the NHL level he also proved he could stay healthy which has been his bugaboo in his young career. Good to get him at a cap friendly deal for now.

  24. I’d be surprised if its not: C for Cally, A for Staal, A for Richards.

Seems to be the obvious choice. Will need an A on Richards, he will be a huge part of this team. Shouldn’t go with 3 young guys with less experience, need a wiley vet in there.

  25. It’s kind of funny…Wasn’t Gaby was the captain of the Wild? he’s not even getting any consideration for a letter….ha!

    Cally – C
    Stahl – A
    Richards-A

  26. Doodie Machetto on

Good for Sauer. As somebody both myself, and much more importantly, Torts did not see making the team last year before training camp, he really has done very well for himself. He will be a third-pairing guy for us for a long time to come.

  27. i like the choices u guys made., cally for C, but duby deserves an A no question. he is just as much a leader as cally. maybe he takes dumb penalties once in awhile, but hes matured alot and does it all. he fights, hes been scoring more every year, he parts his hair just teh way orr likes it. hes kinda arrogant yea, but id rather have thatthan a guy whos quiet like staal. richards ad duby for A’s, cally for C.

  28. Doodie Machetto on

I get the idea of giving a letter to a veteran, but this team has an identity. I think it sends a good message to keep the letters within that.

    Callahan: C
    Staal: A
    Dubinsky: A

Three homegrown guys who have pride in the sweater.

  29. NYR – I thought about gabby. I actually thought about it but I thought Fedotenko should get it before him.

  30. CTBlueshirt on

Gaborik wore the C for a few months that season where the Wild had a rotating captaincy. I think it was a case of letting the team’s best player wear it.

  31. Yet, Herb Brooks believed giving a guy a letter might get him to lift his game, and hence made young Barry Beck the captain, taking it away from Dave Maloney, I believe. Though I thought both of those guys were leaders, unlike Gaborik.

And I think Richards, unlike Messier, needs to earn an official leadership role. Heck, even Messier wondered if he should wait to assume the C as he earned his new teammates’ respect.

My God, that’s 20 years ago, isn’t it?

  32. heres my take on the letters.

as long as when they team needs to step up someone in the room takes charge and gives stern talk. would prefer it to be cally for C but in the end i dont see it meaning a whole lot.

get the 2 pts on any given night

  33. Cally = Captain

Road A’s go to Richards and Prust
Home A’s go to Staal and Dubinsky

    Love the alternating alternates!

  34. 1.25 mil is too low for Anisimov. I think he will sign for 2 years at 1.90 per…

  35. Shoot the puck, Barry on

Agree with what seems to be the consensus— Cally (C), Staal (A), Richards (A).

I would have no problems giving Dubi an “A” as well if we did a semi-rotation. Don’t feel the need to give anyone else a letter, although if it came down to it, it would have to be Prust.

Someone raised Gabby as a possibility– wasn’t he given an “A” a couple of years ago, maybe when we had a rash of injuries? I think I remember that. Don’t quite know his demeanor/role in the room (Carp, can you enlighten us?), but the thought of making him more engaged is intriguing, just not with a letter…

  36. Doodie Machetto on

“1.25 mil is too low for Anisimov. I think he will sign for 2 years at 1.90 per…”

That’s exactly what I think he’ll get as well.

  37. i was thinking 2 years @ 1.5 per for AA. dubi got 1.8 in his second contract…i think he was a step ahead of AA so i would assume he would get a little less

  38. Doodie Machetto on

nyr13, two things on that reasoning:

    1) The cap has gone up, and as such, player salaries.
    2) I’m not so sure Duibinsky was ahead of Anisimov. Anisimov had more goals this year than Dubi had in either of his first two years prior to getting his two year deal. I think they are about the same in terms of their offensive development. And although Dubi played with a lot more “jam,” Anisimov has a lot more discipline.

I’ll say this for Dubi though: he was coming off of a great playoff performance.

  39. Dubi got to play more minutes and with better linemates in his first full season as compared to Anisimov.

AA had a few more goals and a couple of more points in his 2nd full season as compared to Dubi.

They’re at least equal at the same point in their careers.

Carp, Waseka is the best thing to happen to this blog since the shinebox.

  41. Three Cheers for Waseka..

  42. Good morning all!
We seems to have a general consensus here, go figure!
    My thoughts, in recap:
Agreed, no way on Richy I learned that’s how he spells it :) getting the C. I’m not even sure he should get an A, but….

Ideally, I like the five/rotation plan cause I think all those guys deserve it, and if Richards has to get one, I like dore’s plan (especially since I think Prust should be considered)
If that’s not the way it goes, then I guess I can live with Cally, Staal and Richy cause Staal should not lose his A.

Phew, this is too much to ponder before second cup of coffee. Glad your signed Sauer!!!!!!

    C – Callahan

  44. Carp, I’m curious: when a guy like Brooks gets a scoop on a signing or a trade, from whom does he get it? A front-office source? The player’s agent? The player himself? Obviously I’m not looking for names, just curious about the nature of anonymous sources and how beat guys cultivate them.

  45. Doodie, totally agree with your sentiment regarding the letters.

    Is it October yet??

  46. SUA – Prust

    (Super Undercover Alternate)
    _________________

That is awesome. Would he get a letter or would that actually give it away? Maybe he should just be allowed to dip his gloves in glue and broken glass before the game?

  47. Most often from agents/NHLPA sources, I would guess. Not much leaks out of the Garden anymore.

    SALLY! You’re back!

Got to go to a meeting, and not a fun meeting, and not with Mr. T. Dammit.

  48. Captain Callahan with Dubinsky and Staal as alternates….if they went Carps way, it’d be Girardi Staal Dubinsky and Prust…..i dont like wen a new member of a team gets a letter…especially over a core member like dubinsky….thats my two cents

  49. Doodie Machetto on

I picture Carp’s golf balls with little mohawks and gaudy gold jewelry. A feather too.

  50. I wouldn’t give Dubi an A. Time he starts impacting on the ice and the scoreboard, not just in people’s hearts. Let him focus on his game and fulfill some expectations. Then maybe give him an A.

  51. Fedotenko deserves an “A” under the 5 man system. He best exemplifies the style of play under a Torts system.

  52. Word has it that Artem Anisomov has signed an extension :) Good news getting these guys signed :) Loved the Sauer signing and money. As for who should wear the letters this upcoming season….Cally has to be the C! He is a perfect definition for how a ranger should play 100% every shift. Staal should hang on to an A. And eithier Duby or Richards should get the other A.

More on the Artem Anisomov signing here:

    http://www.snyrangersblog.com/2011/07/08/news-rangers-sign-artem-anisimov/

No word on exact $ but I am excited :)

  53. Mister Delaware on

“That is awesome. Would he get a letter or would that actually give it away?”

No letter, but maybe an undecipherable hologram or something.

I was really hoping to see Anisimov closer to 4 or 5 years than 2. If you believe the guy is a future #2 center (and, of course, he’s open to the idea), take the smaller risk now to avoid the bigger payout later.

  54. For the life of me, I don’t understand a lot of the anti-Dubinsky sentiment by the fans. The guy absolutely carried the team in the first couple months of the season and came back, though probably to his detriment, very soon after suffering a hairline fracture in his leg. He’s not perfect but he gives more effort and has more fire than many and he loves being a part of this team.

    C – Callahan
    A – Staal
    A – Dubinsky

  55. “It?s kind of funny?Wasn?t Gaby was the captain of the Wild? he?s not even getting any consideration for a letter?.ha!”

Not entirely fair. I think I was captain of the Wild for a month at one point.

  56. I agree with The Doctor. I was hoping to see Artie-Partie sign a 5 year extension.

  57. Doodie Machetto on

“I was really hoping to see Anisimov closer to 4 or 5 years than 2. If you believe the guy is a future #2 center (and, of course, he’s open to the idea), take the smaller risk now to avoid the bigger payout later.”

Anisimov probably wouldn’t want the longer deal. In two years he will have arbitration rights and will be in line for a big raise.

  58. Doodie Machetto on

Also, don’t know if this is old news or not, but I just saw that the Flyers signed Simmonds to a 2 year deal worth 1.75 per.`

  59. I don’t think Butt-Chin was ever the Captain. Someone else was, and then Koivu became the Captain.

Butt-Chin is talented player, but he’s not a leader.

Delaware, I was thinking the same thing.

    Chris F, exactly.

  60. Noah, just because he talks the talk doesn’t mean he should get a letter, in my opinion. Sure, he says all the right things. I want my Captain, and co-Captains to lead by example. He doesn’t consistently do that.

Cally, Stahl, Girardi, and even Prust, and Feds have done that all season long. They deserve the letters!

  61. czechthemout!!!! on

    Chris F

You do know that Dubi was the leading voter on the team, right?

  62. Doodie Machetto on

I don’t like giving letters to outside guys. Sure, it worked great with Messier, but I think we can all agree that he isn’t just any captain. he is THE captain.

  63. eddie eddie eddie on

Callahan deserves the C. Dubi has developed into an excellent on-ice leader. Countless time, you see Dubi talking to the refs during a game. He deserves an A. I would give the other A to THE PRUST. The guy works hard, stands up infinitum for his mates, and takes on all comers….if a 3rd A, let stall, stahl, or staal have it…….although he is a tad too quiet, albeit my perspective is severely limited, for me…

  64. czechthemout!!!! on

    That should have read scorer.

By the way Chris F , do you watch any of the games? Or do you just repeat some of th anti Dubi comments?

  65. Doodie I agree. But didn’t they give the C to Jagr right when he joined? I didn’t like that either.

  66. No, Mama. Jagr didn’t want it. They gave it to him in 2006-07 after he’d been with the team for over a year…

  67. eddie eddie eddie on

richards has an enough experience on ice that he can talk to officials without being shooed away….also, he will provide de facto leadership without the need to sew a letter on his sweater…let him adjust to ranger life and the expectations of that big contract….

  68. They had 3 A’s in the first season after the lockout. Jagr took the C the next year.

Prospal got an A in his first season in NY, as did Naslund in his only season.

  69. Doodie Machetto on

“But didn’t they give the C to Jagr right when he joined? I didn’t like that either.”

No. Messier was captain through 2004 when Jagr joined. Then coming out of the lockout, there was no captain, just three alternates. Jagr was then named captain prior to the 06-07 season.

However, if they had named Jagr captain that first year coming out of the lockout, I wouldn’t have really minded. There wasn’t really much of the team returning after the 2004 fire sale.

  70. Mister Delaware on

“Anisimov probably wouldn’t want the longer deal. In two years he will have arbitration rights and will be in line for a big raise.”

Yeah, that’s always the variable. But if you’re him (assuming he’s not from a Gerrit Cole-esque family) isn’t $12.5MM over 5 years really tough to pass up for what I imagine is closer to $3MM+ over two? Especially if you frontload it with a nice bonus, which obviously the Rangers can afford to do? Granted, either number would blow me away, but the security of an eight figure guarantee would be pretty tough to ignore, especially knowing I’m coming out of that deal heading into my age 28 season. Really (really, really) hedges against that worst case scenario.

  71. I wasn’t talking about his talk. I thought his play talked just fine for much of the season, not to mention wanting to come back early from his injury to help the team.

I mean, I obviously won’t ever win this argument since some are set in their ways. And this is not to say that I don’t support giving someone like Girardi the other A. I just like the idea of Callahan and Dubinsky both having an official leadership role together since they have come through the organization together.

  72. Actually, in my opinion, Lungfist should be the Captain.

Because he *IS* the Captain. Once he goes down, the ship goes down with him. +If+ we win the Cup, then it’s Lungfist who should raise the Cup first, because we go nowhere without him.

  73. eddie eddie eddie on

chris – you are way off regarding dubi…..the guy is a TEAM PLAYER….

  74. Dublowsky is capable of much more than he has given. Yeah, he’s had two tough injuries the last two seasons, but that’s just an excuse fans like to use in his defense. He’s still inconsistent, and he needs to get past that.

  75. Mister Delaware on

I’m pretty sure I’m never going to understand how someone can love Callahan and be indifferent at best on Dubinsky.

  76. eddie eddie eddie on

orr – name a ranger that isn’t inconsistent besides THE PRUST. DUBI deserves the A!!!!

  77. Orr,

How much are you expecting him to score? I think he can produce more, but he’s a solid two player that can play all situations. I’m not expecting him to be a 40 goal/80 point guy. If he puts up 25-30 goals, 60+ points with 18-20 minutes against the other team’s top competition then he’s filling a pretty valuable role. He’s not that far off from playing that as it is.

  78. eddie eddie eddie on

NYR fan – my brutha…if you expect to breathe in some of the finest chronic the earth has ever seen…you needs to be stoppin with the pro-MZA and anti-Dubi comments……

  79. What’s up ‘heads- no time to read through everything right now but I’ll make a couple quick comments-

I think it speaks volumes about this team’s make up when we’re sitting here and can make valid points as to how so many players are worthy of the A on their chest.

Secondly, I don’t think it’s good for Richards or the rest of the team to just automatically give him the A and especially not the C. Not saying he can’t earn either one in camp just that there is already a nucleus formed here with our team and he has to mesh with and become part of it. Can’t just go oh he’s here and he’s the top player gotta make him captain. I trust in Torts and his decision making on this kind of thing so i’m sure whoever gets selected will be the guys who deserve it most and have the most respect in the locker room

  80. Exactly eddie. Hate to break it to you all, but Callahan, Staal and Girardi are ALL inconsistent. Hell, Henrik himself is inconsistent, at least during the dog days of winter. The fact that a player is inconsistent means he shouldn’t take on alternate captain status. Not seeing how that argument makes sense.

This debate is making me thirsty.

  81. I honestly think he can step it up to 30-35 goals, 70+ points, possibly more.

Eddie, I’m not saying he’s the only one. Everyone’s inconsistent in their own way.

I’m not being biased, whether you agree or disagree with me.

    Cally/Hank Prust, Stahl!

  82. I think Richards should get (not deserves) a letter, an “A”, for one reason: He, as an elder statesman and expected leader of the team (based on hype and salary) needs to take a leadership role and he isn’t going to listen to a bunch of 24 year olds tell him what to do and to play harder.

  83. Guys,

Marc Staal will hopefully be a cornerstone of the team for years to come. So, no matter what letter he wears, please start spelling his name correctly. Not Mark. Not Stall. Not Stahl. Not Staull.

    Marc Staal.

    Thanks,
    The Management

  84. Adam – You’re actually wrong. His name is spelled Staul. You can look into it.

  85. eddie eddie eddie on

manny – that is the point as to what richards doesnt need the letter…his elderly status gives him de facto respect……by giving Cally the C and dubi/THE PRUST A’s, you are fostering maturity from the guys who are mid 20’s in age and it will only make them better players…

  86. Noah, I thought Stahl, and Girardi had a pretty consistent season, defensively. Sure, they had a few bad plays here and there, but the fact is, they’re going against the teams top players. It’s impossible to be perfect.

The fans, including myself, can be too hard on them. But, they both had a solid season.

And they were good in the playoffs, especially Girardi.

  87. eddie eddie eddie on

adam – as someone who retains the law firm of staal, stahl, and stall….i thank you…

  88. Dantherangerfan on

Thats pretty reasonable for sauer…Hope its the same with the anisimov negotiations which are about to be released.

  89. ORR, I don’t disagree…I don’t want this to be misinterpreted as a referendum on Staal and Girardi because it’s not.

Just my $0.02 on why I feel Dubinsky-blowsky should be in the conversation.

In fact, I hope Torts takes his foot off the gas a bit this year with regard to Staal and Girardi’s ice time. I was at Game 4 against the Caps, and during double OT, Staal’s legs were moving but he literally could not move. We will never have a chance in those grueling playoff overtime games with a better allocation of ice time throughout the year.

  90. eddie eddie eddie on

do you know anyone that has mesothelioma? if so, stall, staal, and stahl are the firm for you…

  91. Cally needs to wear the “C”

    Staal/Dubi – get the “A’s”

I think putting a letter on Dubi will elevate his game, he just seems like the kind of player who would get a confidence boost from it. He’s a huge part of the core of this team and he also seems to be the most vocal of the candidates. I think one guy wearing a letter needs to have a mouth on him and Cally and Staal don’t quite fit into that role.

If Richards were a true leader, he would not want a letter on his sweater. He would recognize who the core of this team is and not infringe upon its current leadership in anyway. In reality a letter does not mean all that much BUT I do believe it means a lot more to a guy that has paid his dues on this team rather then someone who just came in. Giving a letter to a FA is a slap in the face(albeit a small one) to the guys who already here. Richards can bring veteran leadership without an “A” and I think he would gain the respect of the team by not taking one.

    SAUER = BEAST

  92. Noah – you’re right. This team is dead in OT. I never once went into an OT thinking we were going to win. The only hope was to stave off sudden-death elimination and get to the shoot out.

  93. The idea of having an alternate captain is, in part, to have a player who can confer with refs when the captain isn’t on the ice.

As such, Dubinsky doesn’t get one, neither does Girardi, as they’re almost always paired with Callahan and Staal.

Not that they aren’t deserving or that it wouldnt be helpful to them as a confidence boost.

    C-Callahan, A-Staal, A-Richards.

  94. Some 30 G, 70+ pts players from the past 3 years:

    10-11:
    B. Richards 28 G, 49 A
    E. Staal 33, 43
    Toews 32, 44
    Kesler 41, 32
    Marleau, 37, 36
    Vanek 32, 41
    Sharp 34, 37

    09-10:
    Heatley 39, 43
    Parise 38, 44
    Kopitar 34, 47
    Iginla 32, 37
    Burrows 35, 32
    Nash 33, 34

    08-09:
    Semin 34, 45
    M. Richards 30, 50
    Elias 31, 47
    E. Staal 40, 35
    Gagne 34, 40

I don’t think Dubi stacks up to most of these guys in terms of talent. Or some of these guys benefit from being on top lines with higher skilled guys (Burrows for instance). That’s why I think 25-30 G, 60 points is a more realistic ceiling for Dubi.

  95. Rod – Dubinsky deserves an “A”

When Callahan went down Dubinsky was the most vocal member of the team. Always waiting for a guy when he went into the box, giving him a high-five and then conferring with the refs.

  96. Richards should NOT get an A.

    But he probably will.

Avery should get an A. Maybe his game will change?

  97. eddie eddie eddie on

THE PRUST should get an “A” too. In fact, what should be sewed on THE PRUST’s sweater is “Assen-kicker”

  98. In fact, Dubi deserves ‘C’ not ‘A’. He is the only player on the team which on regular basis fights (often time bigger opponents) to protect his teammates on top of scoring and assisting on goals.

  99. eddie eddie eddie on

DUBI is the best on ice politician the rangers have…if you dont see that…you arent watching the games….

  100. LW, there were very few players that had 30 goals but less than 80 points that year.

  101. Shoot the puck, Barry on

Loved the Dolan-Sather-Trautwig captain-alternates thing by Manny… LOL

  102. C-Callahan
    A-Staal
    A-Dubinsky

that simple. in games where staal or dubinsky got injured i’d give ‘a’ to richards or prust.

  103. eddie, my brutha from anotha mutha.

I want to Dubi to succeed. I want him to be a leader. I want him to turn the page in his career and become a consistent player. He has what it takes to be an impact NHL player (and 70+ points would not be out of the question). He is a completely different player from Callahan. It’s time for him to lead by example…
I just have a feeling he won’t get signed before the arb hearing. He showed signs last year that he had matured and I hope that continues this year. Right now, I honestly don’t think he’s the right guy for an ‘A’. I could see him signing an arb deal and then losing him to free agency next year…

MZA is still a question mark. He had a nice half of a season last year. He was a rookie playing in North America for the first time. 23 years old. World class skill and hands. I just don’t like it when Rangers fans pencil him in as a spare forward or 4th liner. That is silly. The guy will wither play in the AHL or go back to Sweden if there simply isn’t a spot for him on the team.

    Did somebody say sativa?

  104. Mister Delaware on

You said Kim Stahl which made me think of Kim Deal which makes me want to throw on some Pixies but my iTunes are on the computer in the other room and that’s just too far to go.

(And I really, really disagree with your reasoning for the Dublowskying. The guy produces as much as Callahan (trusting you’ll agree that Dubinsky’s PPG last season was down because he played for stretch when physically he shouldn’t have) but because you “expect more out of him”, Callahan is your guy and Dubinsky gets a cutesy disparaging nickname? C’mon. That would be like be calling you pORR because I expect to enjoy all of your comments and not just most.)

  105. We were pretty close on predicting AA’s deal. First round of beers is on oleo and doodie.

  106. The Doctor – if you can’t put on the pixies I can just link you to endless video’s of Ms. Deal during her drug addicted period when she would do awesome dances during “hey” and other amazing songs.

Alternatively I can sing you Pixies tunes for hours.

  107. Gretzky had that one season where had points in like 50 consecutive games…inconsistent.

  108. Similar to Prospal earning an A the 2 years ago, Torts may do that again. But I would think 3 young players wouldn’t be beneficial. Need a vet in there for an A at least.

  109. man? this consistency argument is totally lame? NO BODY IS CONSISTENT FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON! NO-FREAKING-BODY! NONE!

    Not even GOD!

    ***

Can we leave Avery out of this?

  110. Mister Delaware on

“man… this consistency argument is totally lame… NO BODY IS CONSISTENT FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON! NO-FREAKING-BODY! NONE!”

Disagree. Redden was consistently not around all season. Not once. Consistency. Entire season. Boom.

  112. True Blue Mike on

The Rangers have 12.8m in cap space remaining now with 3 more players needing to be signed.

    Dubinsky – 4m
    Callahan – 4.5m
    Boyle – 1.5m +
    ===========
    10m

So the Rangers should have around 2.8m left in Cap space after we sign the RFA’s

  114. Doodie Machetto on

No way does Callahan getting Ladd money… not bad… but I would like to see him get a little less. Ladd has more of a pedigree, plus two Cups already. 4.25 for Callahan would be ideal.

  115. eddie eddie eddie on

ec consistently takes on all comers…protects all team-mates…and never throws his mates under a bus…..give ec the c…small c for emphasis…

  116. IMO, Dubinsky is definitely one of the team leaders and certainly one of the faces of the franchise with his willingness to face the media and the music even after tough games (while giving honest answers, which the other leaders kind of avoid with their platitudes and cliches). But Dubinsky needs to play the same way every night, and he doesn’t. Maybe a letter will help him to do that.

And the idea that you need an A on the ice to talk with officials is antiquated. Now the captain hops over the boards to go talk to the official when the coach wants something explained.

  117. “In baseball, my theory is to strive for consistency, not to worry about the numbers. If you dwell on statistics you get shortsighted, if you aim for consistency, the numbers will be there at the end.” – Tom Seaver

  119. eddie eddie eddie on

carp – i agree….the fact that Dubi can talk to and work the officials as much as he does without a letter is testimony to your thought…..but given his on ice political awareness, the A is a perfect for him….

    morning ILB and all!!

Nice contract for sauer, puts him right in line with what girardi is making…oh wait OPG, never mind!

Letters, ah letters…I like the three letter plan so I’ll start there

    C-Auctioneer
    A-Either Stall, Stahl, or Staal
A-Prust (this comment says it all…name a ranger that isn’t inconsistent besides THE PRUST)

If you go the five letter system

Home letters are the above 3, and away alternates are

A-Feds (next to Prust, the most consistent ranger)
A-Hank or Boyle (who has worked his butt off to get where he is)

A big no to an overpaid D man who plays like he is addicted body surfing and not sure why, but I’m just not sold on dubi yet (not sure where DINAMO sees him always fighting bigger players to stand up for teammates, in all honesty I don’t think I have ever seen him fight standing up for a teammate that I can remember…boyle fought shelley standing up for someone, avery fought someone standing up for EC after the under the bus incident, dubi did fight carcillo after the gabby incident…wait that was avery, nevermind), ok yeah, NO to dubi and a letter!

ovie wanted to fight, he initiated it (you could clearly hear it on 24/7). Dubi just obliged, not what I would call coming to the aid of a teammate, but sure. that ovi is one hell of a fighter as well. Can’t wait until dubi impresses everyone by accepting marty st louis invitation to drop em!

  133. wicky(grating PIBG)© (HIT the mullet!!) on

My favorite with dubi is the whole carcillo incident how tough was dubi when they both were in the box??? I mean WOW, he beat carcillo to a pulp verbally and then bull dog’s boy actually did the fighting on the ice…priceless!!!

wicky – my brutha…it be all good in the hood when i be choppin wood, as i should, if i could…

  139. I like your idea, Carp. Here’s what I’d do.

Captaincy goes to Callahan. No question about it. As for the alternates..

    Home
    A- Staal
    A- Dubinsky

These are two younger guys the fans love and can identify with, especially the less educated fans and the businessmen fans; I feel like if Richards or Gaborik or someone had an A and were struggling, everyone would hop all over it, so this is for their protection to some extent. Also, both players are deserving of the letters and their leadership positions so I think it’d be nice for the young core to step out and lead on Garden ice.

    Away
    A- Richards
    A- Fedotenko

This will serve two purposes; one, it will help everyone buy into the Torts system even more (as if they already haven’t.) These are two guys who have won a cup under him, so I think it’s important for them to have a leadership/guidance position on this team. The second is that as established NHL players and Stanley Cup Champions, I think they’ll get a little more respect from officials in away markets.

    That’s just me, however.

But really, for 3+ years of following, unusually humongous numbers for every thread just caught my attention. Is it an actual current trend in your opinion, attributed to your obvious skills and talent in thoroughly chosen themes in topics and ability to attract more new followers, or it is just my imagination? Or something else?
Does anyone at your end do some analyses, and do you have a comparative statistic of hits, month by/to month, years by/to years in dynamic?

one a day – you need some chitty chitty chitty in front of yo bang bang bang

  187. “Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I’d say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.”

  188. “So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that’s on the worst day of my life.”

  189. “Oh, and remember: next Friday… is Hawaiian shirt day. So, you know, if you want to, go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt.”

  190. “I can’t believe what a bunch of nerds we are. We’re looking up “money laundering” in a dictionary.”

  191. “It’s not just about me and my dream of doing nothing. It’s about all of us. I don’t know what happened to me at that hypnotherapist and, I don’t know, maybe it was just shock and it’s wearing off now, but when I saw that fat man keel over and die – Michael, we don’t have a lot of time on this earth! We weren’t meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about about mission statements.”

  192. “Ummm, yeah. I’m gonna need you to come on Sunday…..Mmmmk? Thaaanks.”

  193. “This isn’t Riyadh. You know they’re not gonna saw your hands off here, alright? The worst they would ever do is they would put you for a couple of months into a white-collar, minimum-security resort! S*^t, we should be so lucky! Do you know, they have conjugal visits there?”

  194. “We ahh lost some people this week and ah, we sorta need to play catch up.”

  195. “And I said, I don’t care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I’m, I’m quitting, I’m going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they’ve moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn’t bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it’s not okay because if they take my stapler then I’ll set the building on fire…”

  196. 4ever, I think Manny answered your question at 3:05 p.m.

Good afternoon, Sally! Let us know when you’re visiting our little town.

  197. “Not this time. I’ll bet I’m the first one laid off! Just the thought of having to go to the state unemployment office and stand in line with those SCUMBAGS!!!”

  198. Just gotta get to 500 posts Carp. Chugging Along. I have seen no reprimand from ilb yet telling this nonsense and buffoonery to be knocked off.

  199. “We will make a list of our clients and how much money each of them
has given us to invest. We will keep this list in a safe place. If
we have time we will make a copy of the list in case something happens
    to the first list.”

  200. “Don’t leave the client’s money lying around. Keep it in a safe place.
For example: where we keep the list.”

  201. Yeah, OK, now I get an answer on my question to Carp about sharply increased amount of post – but of course, it is Pandemic Collective wording diarrhea and brains squirt. …and somebody asked yesterday night: “WTB” about such an innocent stuff…LOL.

  202. “If a client is talking and you’re not listening and he notices and
he accuses you of not listening, just say, “Sure I’ve been listening,
I’ve heard every word you’ve said.” If he then says, “All right, tell
me what I’ve been talking about,” just say, “You’ve been talking about
your investments. Which stocks to buy and so on.” That way the client
will think you’ve been listening even though you haven’t.”

  203. “Once a year, we will write each broker’s name on a slip of paper and
then place the slips in a hat. Each broker will then draw a slip of
paper from the hat. He will buy a gift for the broker whose name he
his drawn. He will be that broker’s Secret Santa.”

  204. “If my wife calls white I’m in shagging my secretary, tell her I’m
at a board meeting. That way I’ll be able to continue shagging my
secretary without my wife knowing about it.”

  205. “Clients will rely on us for market expertise. If the day ever comes
when a client knows more about the market than we do, copy him. Do
    what he does.”

  206. “We will invest only in white-owned businesses.”

“Not all of Arthur Grayson’s principles are followed today, but at
Grayson Moorhead we still believe in the basics.”

  207. Drury’s deal also includes a full no-move clause, meaning he can’t be traded without his consent or sent to the minor leagues. Agreeing to such terms is a shift in previous Rangers policy.

“I’d say it was not as intact as it was yesterday,” Sather said with a laugh. “When you make a deal, there are certain things you try to stick to and certain things you make compromises on.”

  208. “He was wearing my Harvard tie. Can you believe it? My Harvard tie. Like oh, sure he went to Harvard.”

  210. “Little news flash, Pop. Ha. Harold ain’t so perfect. Remember that time in Puerto Rico when we picked up those two, uh… well, I guess they were prostitutes, but I don’t remember paying.”

  211. “He wants to make money. You know – live in a nice house with wide windows and locks. You can’t expect him to live forever with his sister and the nipple-twisting that goes on there.”

  212. You know, to a certain extent, this blog has reinvented itself and now routinely writes in tongues. I used to be able to follow it but lately…there is just too much in the way of inside info and innuendo, and specialty speech that have i’ve been overwhelmed by. I’ll continue to struggle along, but it ain’t Kansas anymore.
