Inching closer to July 1

I’ve been holding out on my Pros/Cons on the Brad Richards sweepstakes. I’ve got to tell you, I’m waffling, sort of as I did last year with Ilya Kovalchuk.

Got a lot of reasons to go either way. Maybe we can get into it later on today, or tomorrow.

Meanwhile, what’s Plan B? Tim Connolly? Brooks Laich?

There was talk yesterday about Jaromir Jagr landing back in Pittsburgh. And about Steve Stamkos close to re-signing in Tampa (that offer sheet was never going to happen anyway), and Kevin Bieksa re-signed with Vancouver.

This afternoon, at 3 p.m., the Hockey Hall of Fame will announce its Class of 2011.

NHL Network will broadcast the announcement. I’m not going to get too excited because the HHOF often screws this up. And how the heck Kevin Lowe isn’t in, and Clark Gillies is … well, that’s beyond me.

Here’s the link to the list of first-time eligible players and loads of others who have been considered over the years but have yet to gain induction.

Finally, can we get through a day without me having to ban somebody or threaten to ban somebody? Please?

  1. Have the kids been naughty while i’ve been away Carp?

The reason why BR will probably get overpaid is the rise in the cap floor causing some 2nd/3rd/4th liners getting big money and the lack of alternatives in the UFA market.
Hopefully Slats will not go over 5 years, as for the money, who knows? $8m per?

  2. My fear is a seven or eight year deal because that’s what Burke is going to throw at Brichards and I really think sagger (and torts) really wants this guy.

  3. Onecupin72yearsandcounting on

I think the rangers will spend because they want to.. even though it may not be in they’re best interest..they lack discipline , hence mediocrity.

They should have traded their first round pick..for a 2012 first round pick , maybe the talent level will be better.

ather will be swapping 1st rounders (Miller)with maloney’s Yotes in 2 /3 yrs anyway.

  4. Andrew Gross says something similar today too – maybe offer him 5 years, $40-42m and a NTC/NMC and remind him about stable ownership, great facilities, franchise history, coach etc. (and get Mess & Gravy to deliver the offer face to face).

  5. I am not so sure that Richards is the answer to Gaborik’s woes. I read an interesting quote from Gordie Clark about how Gaborik was not sprung by long passes last season. He was alluding to Del Zotto not making those home run passes from 2 years ago. I fear that the NYR will force Brad and Gabby together, and they will strugle against the likes of Chara-Siedenberg, Pronger, Orpik, etc.

Did the NYR ever try Anisimov to center Gabby last year? Anyone wanna speculate what the lines will be next season?

  6. And as far as Brad taking a discount? Forget it. More teams are in play (I think Philly is the team to watch), and why would he take a penny less than he can get? I would personally be INSULTED if Sather offered me one penny lass than he gave Drury or Gomez.

  7. Did Carcillo get dumped by Philly?!? Would the NYR be interested? In the new NHL, he is far more effective than a heavywieght goon.

  8. Eberyone struggles against the best defensive pairs in the league. And yes it is true that the long passes were one of 3 major ways Gabby got chances and many of those were from MDZ but fact is most of the league knew to take that option away by halfway through the year. It’s not that DelZotto or anyone else forgot how to do it, it’s that it wasn’t there anymore once they took it away. As for Richards, come on, Gabby needs a good center to play with and we do not have one. This is different than Jagr and Gomez/Drury. With Drury it’s clear his style wouldn’t mesh with Jagr and with Gomez both of them ike to have the puck and carry it into the zone. The big question is are richards’ and Gabby’s styles complementary and they probably are.

  9. Philly still needs to re-sign a few more players to round out a roster. They also need to leave some space for extending JVR in the future.

  10. cw – i think Slats will offer him more than Gomer or Dru – he’s got to be looking at the $8-8.5m per year range.
Question is, will someone go way over that, and will someone offer him 6/7/8 years – and then will Brad he take the money and length over things like owner stability, facilities, schedule, coach, chance to contend?

  11. My main concern is thst the Leaves can match whatever the Rangers offer in terms of salary and the allure of playing for an original 6 team and yadda yadda yadda. Although I’d have to say that the pressure on him up there would be even heavier than in NY due to the Leaves Cup drought and how they’re basically Canada’s version of the late 90’s Rangers in terms of spending prolificacy juxtaposed with limited success.

As for plan B, do nothing. There’s not a lot of sense in taking up space under the cap/on the roster and minutes on the ice for grade B players that will ultimately come at the expense of the home grown players.

  12. Let’s be honest, with Slats history here of giving ridiculous, albatross contracts, Richards is going to get overpaid and over-extended in years!!! That’s if NYR get him, which we will because that’s Sather’s MO!!! And then we will be under that contract for longer than the player will be effective. It’s just been that way with Sather!! And all the accolades he’s gotten is when he works out deals for players he shouldn’t have gotten or signed in the first place.

  13. It’d be funny to have Carcillo but if you want a tough guy who is actually useful, you want Zenon Konopka.

  14. agreed on konopka, and carcillo, who is too much of a punk for Torts.

Richards will not opt for Toronto – nothing Burke has done there has worked at all, I don’t see them even making the playoffs in the near future.

  15. 4generations 4 cups on

I hope Cigar face has something on his mind like a big trade, not just Brad Richards.

We need strength on the wing, and scoring talent. A tough D-Man thats not Mike Sauer would be nice!

  16. @IZZY SR.: Why didn’t anybody tell me? It was bolted down!@

_IZZY: I still thought you could do it._

    *IZZY JR.: Me too.*

  17. DJK – here is the deal. Zenon’s parents had two television sets. A _”Zenith”_ and a _”Xenon.”_ His parents argued over which set to name him after. They were so upset with each other that Mrs. Konopka threatened divorce. Mr. Konopka, in an effort to save his marriage suggested counseling. They went to counseling and the therapist suggested a compromise. That compromise was the name “Zenon.”

  18. If Brooks Laich is Plan B then the plan needs to be blown up. He’s a nice player, but he doesn’t increase the talent level on this team. He’s just more of the same of what they’ve already got.

  19. Plan B is to stay put. But I’m afraid for that to happen, someone would have to heavily sedate Sather.

  20. Please don’t say if you’re coming on RR, email me at instead. I’m planning to keep the identities of people attending the party a secret, so we can all guess who is who. I’ll email you the driving directions later.

  21. Gift of GAB-orik on

Konopka would be a much better acquisition for me than Carcillo. Konopka is also great in the faceoff circle.

  22. “It’d be funny to have Carcillo but if you want a tough guy who is actually useful, you want Zenon Konopka.”

I was thinking that Konopka would be a GREAT signing, but we will have a glut of centers. I would drive EC to the bus stop if it meant getting Konopka, but I just thought it was never gonna happen. Could we afford to lose EC and Boyle? Boyle faded mid season. Konopka would EASILY fill the void left by Dreary and add other needed aspects to the team if you know what I mean.

  23. Boyle will center the third line. If Richards is signed, AA and Stepan can rotate on the wing.

  24. Gift of GAB-orik on

Great article about Sean Avery in the Post today regarding his role in the marriage equality movement, and the movement in general.

It’s a nice read, and kudos to him.

  25. “Boyle will center the third line. If Richards is signed, AA and Stepan can rotate on the wing.”

    Wouldn’t the Centers be:

  26. Konopka for Drury straight up. Isles might set the record for most dead cap space if they Drury, DiPi and Yashin’s buyout counting against the cap.

  27. Amen, Gab. I actually missed the parade but was wondering if he marched and if he did who he marched with.

  28. As much as that contract is going to suck, Wolski-Richards-Gaborik has the potential to be a an extremely productive line. In the 2009-10 season those three combined for 89 goals and 143 assists!!!!

  29. Gift of GAB-orik on

hmm… a W(V)olski-B(about to get richer)ds-Gaborik line is interesting on paper. That could work out real well.

  30. Spider – I think the prison Warden has to approve his followers. That’s why they are private. Because he’s in jail.

  31. Equal rights for everyone!

If Drury can get overpaid and over-extended contract, then Brad Richards should be able to get the same!! We should all march to Albany and demand…wait, wrong issue. Anyway…

  32. cw

Technically Zuccarello finished the year in HFD because of his injury so thats why he’s not on the official roster. Assuming Drury is bought out I would expect the team to look similar to this:

    Wojtek Wolski ($3.800m) / Brad Richards ($7.500m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m)
    Brandon Dubinsky ($3.800m) / Artem Anisimov ($1.900m) / Ryan Callahan ($4.000m)
    Vinny Prospal ($2.000m) / Derek Stepan ($0.875m) / Mats Zuccarello-Aasen ($1.750m)
    Sean Avery ($1.937m) / Brian Boyle ($1.500m) / Brandon Prust ($0.800m)
    Chris Drury ($3.716m) / Erik Christensen ($0.925m)

    Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)
    Ryan McDonagh ($1.300m) / Michael Sauer ($1.200m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m) / Tim Erixon ($1.750m)
    / Radek Martinek ($1.200m)

    Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($0.875m)

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,591,667; BONUSES: $2,837,500
    CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $708,333

  33. With the Salary Cap at 64.3 mil there is no need to buyout anyone other than Drury…

  34. Gift of GAB-orik on

    Hello -Cap Space- Brad Richards

I’m just going to accept the fact that we are going to sign him. I hope he does well, and our offense is more potent.

We may like it, we may not, time will tell. @C’est la vie@.

  35. Bwahaha. On capgeek they have a little window on the side of their homepage that tracks the most popular buyouts of the past 7 days.

    1. Luongo
    2. Gomez
    3. Olesz
    4. Souray
    5. Drury
    6. Lecavalier
    7. Ballard
    8. Kotalik
    9. Komisarek
    10. Heatley

3 Sather specials on that list.

  36. Gift of GAB-orik on

Hilarious comment from a Caps fan:

“A bad contract is a bad contract is a bad contract unless you can ship them off to Tallon when it’s time to re-sign your RFAs.”

  37. At least they have the good sense to view Laich has a 2nd/3rd liner rather than a 1st. Obviously he’s not as good as Backstrom and I think they’re looking at Johansson to eventually take over 2nd line center duties. Maybe him and Laich will share that role this season but throughout the course of that contract he’s best suited to fill the 3C role.

  38. CCCP June 28th, 2011 at 10:53 am

does Sather even know the alphabet?

    @CCCP@ – *LOL*

  39. LOL right back at you, Manny!

i think Gomer is a great buyout candidate… 7 goals in 82 games for 7 mill a year? Sather’s greatest masterpiece.

  40. if Richards signs with TB doesn’t that mean that one of Lecavalier or Stamkos has to go? aka Lecavalier would need to be let go…

Does anyone doubt that Rjchards will make it four? I’m guessing around 8 Mil for 7 years is about par for Stogypuss. NMC? Of course. If Slats structures it right that will be a buyout in 4 years, probably two years and another concussion too late…

    Let’s Go Rangers. Hooray…

  42. Mister Delaware on

Plan C: Sign Parise to some insanely clever offer sheet that NJ can’t match then trade for Statsny without giving up any of the guys I really like. Win multiple Cups.

  43. Gift of GAB-orik on

  47. Why hasn’t Drury been bought out yet?

because Sather is working on Drury’s contract extension.

    Morning ILB and all!!

yep, I say konopka or rupp is def the way to go.

I would still be happy to see mcilrath, pashnin, and erixon make the club. But man, would our D be young…too young IMHO!

pashnin running around way too much in scrimmage apparently.

Boy it would really suck for all those negative nancys if mcilrath wasn’t a bust!!

  49. McIlrath looked really good in the scrimmage today according to beat writers, that is very promising

  50. Gift of GAB-orik on

McIlrath scored on a bust goalie. His stats are a bust!

seriously though, read he’s improved his skating, and he’s physical… would LOVE to see him make the big squad. I think he’s going to be a solid D-man…. and i pray pray pray he develops into the physical crease clearing put the fear of god in ’em D man we’ve lacked for years.

  51. Gift of GAB-orik on

  62. Noah, take a look at CBA—–>, article 11.8(b). Because of his NMC, he has to be given an option by the team to be placed on waivers. He has 24 hours to respond in writing. If he doesn’t want to be placed on waivers, he can be bought out right away. that’s why you’re unlikely to see him officially waived.

  63. wicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 5 LLPs!!) on

cam barker on waivers, anyone else of note yet?

  68. Hey Eddie – The way I see it the Rangers are either going to buy out Drury or he will be part of the team. Unless, of course, they trade him. I can’t look at it any other way. Drury will either be on the team or he won’t be. Thoughts?

  69. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Give Drury 5 year extension… Even on one leg, he is one of the top 3 or 4 forwards in the NHL

  70. wicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 5 LLPs!!) on

    I think manny is correct

  71. Drury could also waive his no movement clause with another team in place to claim him on waivers.

  72. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Yes manny- I agree. Drury will either be a ranger or he won’t. I have to believe those are the top 2 choices for him.

  73. Thanks for the backup on that Eddie. I felt like I was taking crazy pills before. Those are definitely his top two options. I was also thinking about the state of the Rangers and I think it’s crucial that they get ready to play in the off season so they can show up ready to play. I remember you mentioning something about “coming to play” and how crucial it was to winning. All these guys better remember to get new skates, new sticks and new equipment for the new season. That way they can show up ready to play.

  74. wicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 5 LLPs!!) on

    you’re welcome manny!!! sheesh!!

  75. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Manny – a team needs to come to play if it has any hopes of winning. By showing up, with your legs, you give your team a chance. That is all we as fans can ask for…..on the other hand, if you show up without your legs, it will not be easy to skate fast… Today’s NHL is all about speed.

  76. That’s a great point Eddie. Consistent with the super in depth analysis I have come to expect from you. If any of the Rangers don’t have legs, now would be the time to get them. I might also suggest that if you don’t have legs, get new legs with Skates instead of feet. That way you can always be sure to have your skates. It’s very embarrassing to show up at the game without skates.

    never mind, hit the post

  80. eddie eddie eddie on

manny – great point…there are some good online stores that sell the legs and skates as a package deal…..its is very tough to score without legs, much less skates….this is the biggest difference in today’s game compared to other eras…

  81. You know, eddie – since you brought up other eras I was thinking earlier about Hockey in the future. I heard that legs will be replaced with hovering devices. I guess this would add a 4th dimension on the ice. I also heard that warp-holes would be added at center ice to create a 5th dimension to the game. The players better get ready for this because those players with legs will have to remove them to play in that era.

good point manny – since time is nothing more than a collection of moments, it would appear that a collection of hard skating rangers could score more goals by simply skating at speeds approaching the speed of light…..of course, they will need their legs…moreover, they must come to play….

  119. Remember when David Klein was taking trying to take the high road and rise above hypocrisy, etc. Then he entered Phase II which was to attack people. Now he is in Phase III which is pure Troll…..stealing names, etc.

he’s going to blog about how funny he was in clashing with members of this blog…. In like a year or six.

  121. I have to give Orr a credit. Admittedly, I was one of many who gave this idiot benefit of the doubt when he started yo promote his blog some time ago. Orr was the one who couldn’t stand him from the get go. I think he has much better feel for people than I do. How low can human being descend is unreal…..Keep it classy, David.

  122. i’m pretty sure none of the posts today are coming from the real David Klein.

  123. I’m gonna take a little break from the action (I’ve been reading most of the day).. hang in there, Boneheads.

Carp is @peterman7….. i have proof:

stevezipay Yes, I’m OK w/new faces RT @peterman7: @stevezipay Regardless of Drury, exciting to see Hagelin, Fasth, Yogan in camp. McIlrath= monster

  125. Also, I love when people come on here saying “(insert name here) has no life beyond this blog.”

Now, besides 7/1, trade deadline day, and game days, I don’t think there is anyone that literally sits and stares at this site for 12-14 hours a day F5’ing and posting. People come in and out, catch up, post, F5, and go as they please. I like to think of this place as our “Monk’s” (coffee shop in “Seinfeld”). Sure, Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer would frequent Monk’s on a seemingly daily basis. But they had lives outside of the place.

    I guess that makes Carp…Monk?

Why do people care about what the f*** people are doing with their lives? I’m 22 years old, I love the Rangers, so I like to come to this blog to talk about Rangers. Whats up with all the ridiculous fights about ‘omgah you have no life! all u do iz dis! u a coward!’ Somebody got really butthurt obviously by something somebody else said, grow up dude. This is a blog where a lot of ranger fans come to actually enjoy talking about a team we like, not mitigating bullsh** situations with people.

I’m glad to have Carp here, cause other people would just turn the comments off because of stupid bull like this, but somebody actually watching out because they want a community has to be harassed? Enough guys. Enough.

Back to Rangers– Who would be happy with Kaberle? I hear some rumors swirling, i really would like back end PP stability but he didnt do jack-carp in Boston until the final. Maybe he goes back to TO?

Dolan bothers me, as a “hands off” owner. Some, if not most owners who meddle in the GM’s business, really screw it up. But at least they care. The fact that Dolan did not fire Sather after the Gomez and Drury debacles is instructional in that it gave Sather the green light to make a succession of insane over-spending mistakes with the knowledge that he would not be held accountable.

It’s a shame that the late George Steinbrenner did not own the MSG Corporation and the Rangers. Can you imagine Sather lasting two seasons under Steinbrenner? These days we just automatically resign ourselves to Sather tendering another annual ridiculous contract on the FA market. Why? Why is this irresponsible and reckless spender of other people’s money allowed to trample this organization into dust and powder and mortgage the future, year after year? Where are the MSG Corp stockholders, and why are they not all over the owners backside? What kind of business is knowingly allowed to be run by fools – by some who don’t care, and by others who should be in politics, such is their disdain for fiscal restraint.

You know something, I don’t give a damn what Brad Richards brings to the table, here. Some basic belt-tightening and a clean sweep of the Rangers executive offices would represent more of an upside, at this point. Damn, you talk about a stale, putrid, turgid organization that needs a breath of fresh air, and needs some young guns upstairs with fresh ideas and a dynamic/winning philosophy, as well as standards of achievement beyond making the round of 16, that catharsis is long overdue. This constipated organization is the prime example in all of professional sports as to how not to run a business.
