Pre-draft stuff (updated)

Just a few things as we get ready for the first round of the NHL draft tonight.

First, Kevin DeLury of the New York Rangers Blog dropped me this note:

“Just wanted to let you know that sales of the Derek Boogaard memorial logo t-shirt has raised $5,500 for Defending the Blue Line (Boogaard’s charity).

Sales end tonight at midnight and I would love if you could maybe make a mention on your blog or thru Twitter to help get to $6,000.

Shirts can be purchased here:

The Rangers & Wild have publicized the sales through Facebook and Twitter plus Steve Somers of WFAN gave it a mention during his opening monologue the other night which you can listen to here:

Second, MSG Network notifies us that it will present two Hockey Night Live specials. Here’s the announcement:

Mitch Beck at the Howlings blog just posted that the Rangers have re-signed Dale Weise. He’s working on the details.

No to Grimaldi or any other defensemen not named Ryan Murphy!!!

McNeil, Scheifele, Armia, Bartschi he may fall, Tyler Biggs if they trade down and Bradon Saad or Jurco should they trade down as well.

  2. Let’s help them get the number up to $6000, ‘heads! Easy to check out, and they accept paypal.

  3. Ria (the silent bonehead) on

Repost Happy Birthday Mama or as I like to say “Happy New Year”

  4. man philly blew up that team.

holmgren always makes moves. bryzgalov for 9 years, ouch……

  5. Just occurred to me: now three of our favorite curse words on the same team, bryzgalov, carcillo and hartnell.

  6. The Rangers have done pretty well in the draft the last few years so I’m very confident in whatever they do.

That said unless they plan on trading one of our defenseman in a deal for a much needed young #1 center then please don’t draft a defenseman…

  7. Snider (the owner) was stirring the carcillo about getting an *elite* goalie…Holmgren’s job was probably on the line…not to mention, there had to be discontent with the leadership in that lockeroom

  8. Mister Delaware on

What are we thinking the odds are that Gilroy is dealt w/in the next 36 hours?

  9. “former Rangers forward Dave Maloney”

I’m only 24 years old, but I know that Dave was a defenseman, not a forward. Bad typo there by MSG, surprised they did not catch that before releasing it.

  10. philly has been looking for a goalie for 20 years.

what happened to the great BOB???

there D is old.. They still have much more offense then the Rangers

  11. It would be really funny if Voracek and Simmonds were offered contracts Philly couldn’t match.

  12. “philly has been looking for a goalie for 20 years”

    Duh! No Shyte Sherlock!

“They still have much more offense then the Rangers”

    Duh! No Shyte Sherlock!

“man philly blew up that team”

    Duh! No Shyte Sherlock!

    “holmgren always makes moves”

    Duh! No Shyte Sherlock!

  13. Mister Delaware on

“zero chance Gilroy gets dealt since noone is going to give him 2.1 mil a year…”

But they could give him a couple years at lesser money, just like we could.

  14. You’re the one with the blog, maybe you can do some research about the draft.

  15. It is!? I thought the Coyotes owned the rights to that name……..or maybe the NHL owns them now?

  16. CT — VERY impressive. I did not expect that from you. I like this new side of you.

  17. Ria (the silent bonehead) on

Just read an e-mail that says Steven McDonald is in icu with internal bleeding has anyone else heard about this?

  18. Mister Delaware on

You might want to take a marketing class if you’re trying to drive up traffic to your blog.

  19. Okay, well, if you know the end result is a failure, then why are you bothering asking the question?

  20. Why do research when Rangers fans including myself know the end result is failure?

    Then why ask the question?

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

  21. And if you know the end result is failure and the question will lead to failure why are you having the thought?

Why promote your blog if you aren’t going to make posts? Is it because you know the blog is a failure so you don’t bother making posts? You just post the advertisement of the blog to show the crazy world in which we live in? Is this some anthroposophical argument? Are you a fan of Goethe?

  22. haha we all rule….

Today is Michael Del Zotto’s 21st birthday!? Watch out bar scene.

  23. Thanks for all the birthday wishes all! It feels great to be 26! Love to stay around and enjoy all this wit, but I am outta here for the day. TA!

  24. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

I have some insider/personal source that tells me Gilroy will be a Bruin
(they will not resign Kaberle…Gilroy will slide right into their D group)

I think the Rangers should sign Pitkanen and trade MDZ

  25. We’re back on the trade MDZ bandwagon?

There’s no one in the system to replace him.

  26. FWIW, the current Cleveland Browns were allowed to have that name even though the Baltimore Ravens are really the old Cleveland Browns. So there is precedent.

I’m happy they kept the Jets name…but then again, I’m more of a traditionalist.

  27. I love this (from ESPN Insider). These “rumblings” are not attributed to anyone.

“Rumblings of a possible trade bringing forward Jason Spezza of the Ottawa Senators to the New York Rangers have become a little louder of late.

But, from where we sit, this deal isn’t going to happen.

Newsday’s Arthur Staple says there’s “no chance” the Rangers are trading for Spezza. And RDS reporter Renaud Lavoie claims Sens GM Bryan Murray has no intention of moving Spezza.”

  28. Pitkanen on average misses 10 games a season. He’s coming off a deal that had a $4M cap hit, so you’d assume he gets more than that as a UFA. He’s generally a 35-40 points per year guy. I’d rather stick with MDZ at about 30% the cost even if you’re losing 10 points in production. He’s not worth the $2.5-3M or so in extra cap hit.

  29. I definitely like the name “The Jets.” They already have merchandise printed and for sale. Why not?

  30. Doodie Machetto on

I imagine that the Jets will have to pay a licensing fee or outright purchase the name from Phoenix.

  31. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

CTB…I am not on any trade MDZ bandwagon…I prefaced the comment with investing in Pitkanen…if we sign Pitkanen then we can move MDZ

  32. Rather than Razzing CT I will have to agree with him here. He’s right about keeping Michael Del Zotto over Pitkanen.

  33. Ok, well I misinterpreted the initial proposal. Overall though the blueline is not where the Rangers need to invest any more $ than they already have.

  34. I will also not razz CT. I agree with his pro-Del Zotto sentiments. It’s his birthday, btw.

  35. For those that are ready to give up on MDZ, just look at the career progression of guys like Letang, Yandle, Enstrom, Dan Boyle, etc. Half off those guys weren’t in the NHL at 21, let alone 19 when MDZ was. Most of them didn’t start to hit stride until 24-25.

  36. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

CTB…we can agree to disagree…I was just sayin…(I like Pitkanen and he is still quite young, and he QBs the PP, and he can log 25 min/game..and his career +/- is even…)

ilb…so in other words Pikanen would only last the same amount of time as MDZ under the Torts’ patience quota ?

I like B.Richards, but it his last contract and he is gonna take the highest bidder..periods

We need to invest the extra cap space everywhere, not just offense.

  37. He QBs a PP that has been below league average and trended worse every season for the last 3 seasons. In those years where it was just a tick below league average efficiency Corvo was their main point man.

He does log a ton of minutes but then who are you going to take minutes away from in the Rangers top 4 D? If they managed to trade Girardi then I’d consider bringing him in.

He’s not a bad defenseman, in fact if they had a glaring hole on the blueline it may be worth pursuing him but the Rangers have better uses for the $4.5M-$5M cap hit it will probably take to sign him.

  38. Wow, rumors are that Smyth is getting traded from LA to CGY for just a draft pick? What are the Flames thinking? That would mean $6.25M in cap space just opened up for the Kings. They have the ability to be serious players for Brad Richards if they want.

  39. Anybody see the Bruins bar tab after they won the Cup? $156,679.74!

    – 136 Bud Lights
    – 3 Bottles of Captain Morgan ($300 each)
    – 35 Jager Bombs ($525 total)
    – 9 bottles of Goose MG ($600 each)
    – Bottle of Johnny Walker Black for $350

  40. Doodie Machetto on

Orr, they bought a $100k bottle of champagne. So, without that, the bar tab was actually 56k. Still an enormous bar tab, but cmon, they’re clearly buying drinks for everyone that was at Foxwoods.

  41. Oh!! ORR!! I get it…that must have been her yearly tuition to the college of her choice.

  42. orr with his usual stupidty.

big man on a blog, showing his beligirence and immaturity whenever possible.

what grade are you in Orr 9th? how is the gas station treating you or you get a promotion to 7-11?

  43. Doodie Machetto on

Gordie Clark better ask Sather who Sather likes tonight… then avoid that guy like the plague

  44. czechthemout!!!! on

According to SNY, The team brought in Ryan Murphy in for a visit last week.

This a kid that I have liked since I read about him last year.
The consensus on him is that he can step in right away and run any powerplay.
He is the best skater in the draft and put up 79 points in 78 games.
He may fall because his defense needs some work and their is some concern about his size.

He is five feet ten inches tall and about 180lbs. About the same as Leech when he came out.
I think if he is there, we should be all over him! I watched some of his highlights and he looks like Leech when he is skating with the puck and deking around opponents. He also has a big time shot
If we can land him, it may allow us to trade MDZ for a good forward prospect.

  45. ORR – you work at 7/11? Cool. Do they still make Frozen Cokes!?

Man Stuart!! THANKS FOR THE INFO!

  46. Mister Delaware on

“Rumors popping up of the Kings talking with the Avs about Stastny?”

I think we should talk to the Avs about Stastny instead. We could be really nice about it.

  47. Here is my 7/11 story….

My friends worked at a Chuckies (7/11 in CT) and I went to visit them. When I was leaving I held the door for some guy. That guy proceeded to hold them up. He put a knife to my friend’s throat while my other friends started emptying the register. Their boss locked them both out with the armed robber and hid in the “safe room” and refused to either call the cops or let them in. (I guess there was no phone in there).

Best part of the story – I held the door for the guy so they didn’t get his prints on the door AND I never looked at his face so I had no idea what he looked like for a description. I was the last one to have the chance to see him without a stocking on his face.

    Who’s the Friggin Jerk now?

  48. czech,

Del Zotto was a point per game player in the OHL, there was concern about his defense too.

Being 5’10” when Leetch was drafted 20+ years ago wasn’t as big a concern.

Trading him still gives the Rangers only true puck moving defenseman in the organization. So what happens if this new guy struggles or goes through a sophomore slump?

  49. When I was three years old, I was at a local toy store with my aunt. She had forgotten to grab something, so she put me down on the counter and went to grab it. I sat on the counter while the store was held up!

  50. Hey ORR – why are you so immature? I missed what you did to prompt another random hatred rant upon yourself.

  51. Is that true Latona? It’s starting to sound a lot like how Bobby Bakala got snuffed out at the end of Sopranos (spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen it).

  52. Stuart’s a dope. He got mad that I pointed out his ridiculous obvious posts.

If I remember correctly, Doodie said something, and Stewie’s response was “no sh*t sherlock”, because apparently what Doodie said was so obvious, he shouldn’t have even shared his opinion.

So, now every time Stewie says something obvious, I do the same thing. No shyte sherlock!

Bwaha! I like my “haters”, duuuuude!

  53. Hey ….. Tomorrow they have to wake up and go back to their regular lives with all their problems….(whatever Lebron said)

  54. 136 Bud Lights for a few Bruins? They’d still be urinating from it by their season opener in October

  55. I’ll have to amend my previous statement- except Chara. Apparently he is prone to dehydration.

  56. Doodie Machetto on

Andre the Giant once drank 156 pints (pints, not bottles) of beer in one sitting.

  57. Andre the Giant was awesome. I saw a biography on him where they talked about his ability to consume insane amounts of alcohol. Like …CASES of wine and then BOTTLES of vodka. Thus, I believe it.

“My Dinner with Andre” was not the film…..

  58. czechthemout!!!! on

Bull! Leech dropped to #9 precisely because he was considered to be small and lacking a good defensive game .intact, when Leech was drafted, Craig Patrick took heat for drafting him too early.

As for MDZ, his numbers were not anywhere near Murphy’s in terms of goals and points . I am not advocating a trade of MDZ. Just suggesting that it can be an option.
Also, Mdz does not skate anywhere near Murphy. Nor does he have his shot. Murphy has what scouts are calling.g franchise offensive defensemen ability. Mdz never was considered to have those skills.

  59. Doodie Machetto on

Murphy is a more highly touted prospect than MDZ was. However, Murphy will not fall to us at 15.

  60. Bobby, deh ever catch dat gorilla that busted outa da zoo and punched you in da eye?

  61. David,
I just gave you a hit on your blog…
but then I saw Mets and wrestling…and realized its not a Rangers blog.
Its a blog with wrestling and the Mets…
    BTW wrestling is lame.

  62. Manny,

Yeah, that may have screwed me up for a long time. At least I got a few more years of sanity of the ordeal.

The film. Was it “The English Patient?” Or “Sack Lunch?”

  63. It also isn’t a blog. It’s a semi-annual online publication published at the sole discretion of the author.

  64. In fact, anything outside of 10 is questionable. No need to lose another prospect and trade up. Stay put, get the best available. Or trade down and get one 2nd rounder. Call it a day.

  65. Boom Boom Bathgate on

They should call the team Winnipeg Wolfs, because it goes with and is as stupid and grammtically incorrect as Toronto Leafs.

By the way, this growing movement to correct the Toronto name misspelling could be resolved by dropping the Leaf, Leafs, Leaves part and just calling the team the TORONTO MAPLES. Name the team for the tree the leaves come from. Give the name some roots instead of some dead leaves/leafs on the ground every fall. Just sayin.’ lol

  66. Thomas Edison is the devil! Seriously, I hate that guy. But we won’t get into it.

I kind of like Maple Leafs. Gives it some character.

  67. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Peter Falk ranks with Joey Bishop as one of the most under-talented, over-rated, over-exposed drab personalities the film and tv industries have ever produced. And why that mortician- personality Bishop got to run around with Sin-Bad for years, I will never know. Maybe the ultimate swinger needed to contrast himself with human imitations of a stone monument, or something. Rest in peace, Peter, just like you’ve been doing for the last 50 years, anyway. So what else is new?

  68. Boom Boom Bathgate on

oohhh Toronto Maple Syrups, I REALLY like that one. Nice going and thank you. Vivid imagination!

  69. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Of course they would spoil it by calling the team the Ontario Maple Syrup, but hey 51 per cent is better than nothing.

  70. Foos-ball? Buncha overgrown monsters man-handlin’ each other… ‘Member when dat man wanted you to play foos-ball, Bobby?

  71. Stupid Canada Post is on strike! My Canadian customers are ripping me apart! As if this si my fault they don’t get their orders on time! I NEED A VACATION!

  72. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Rangers should trade up for Dougie Hamilton, then trade down for Britney Spears. Just sayin’.

  73. Wow, how is Colorado going to meet the salary floor? They must be in real financial trouble.

  74. Doodie Machetto on

to be clear, its a 2012 2nd rounder, the one that Toronto got from Boston.

  75. Might not have been you, Doodie, probably confusing you with someone else.

What’s with Burke. I used to be just like him. When I was a kid, if I went to the store to buy a toy, and they didn’t have it, I’d have to buy anything, even if I don’t want it that much.

He tried Carter, didn’t get him. He tried Richards, couldn’t get him. He tried Richards’ rights, couldn’t get it. Now he finally gets something.

  76. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " I feel a draft !!!"...says Greg L. on

WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO new Ranger TODAY!!!!!!! Yeah baby!!!!! I cant wait , cant wait cant freakin wait till it OUR turn!!!!!

  77. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " I feel a draft!!!"...says Greg L. on

Toronto Maple Laughs is the best saying with Tie Dummy as their hero.

Today we draft a new Ranger.

    Sign Jarda could be sweeet!!!

  78. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " More draft "hiccup" please !!!"...says Greg L. on

Trade Hank for Luongo straight across.

Happy BIRTHDAY MOMMA!!!! You young Thang you.

  79. C’mon Slats trade down and pick up Jurco. I like that he lists Gabby as his favorite player. If they stand pat i like Armia.

I think we should go high risk-high reward this draft. Im even fine if they go with tiny Rocco G.

  80. Crunching the numbers on Capgeek. If we essentially give BR, Drurys 7 mill and guve are kids decent raises we still have about 6 million dollars.

I think we should throw like 3-4 mill towards Jussi Jokinen to play first line LW

  81. Laurel,
Happy Birthday! Many, many more 26th and please, please, BE HAPPY! You deserve it more than Boston Stanley Cup, that’s for sure…

  82. A Laurel Adorer on

Happy 26th to one of the kindest and best friends anyone could ever want! Remember those squirrel monkeys :)

So who are we getting 2nite?

  83. wicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 5 LLPs!!) on

Just popping in and wanting to say good luck to US and have fun (love to see COUTURIER drop to us, but highly doubt it happens)

wonder if booth or weiss gets traded from florida??

    have fun guys!!

  84. I was once on a plane with Andre The Giant. They had to put the armrests up and gave him a while row.

Bobby Boucher? My sister once dated a Bobby Boucher, who was one of the best high school wrestlers ever in this area.

Unlike our friend, I still think Del Zotto has tremendous potential upside, and more important, I think Torts feels the same way.

I’ll have a new post at draft time.

  85. wicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 5 LLPs!!) on

grimaldi, biggs, saad, phillips, or jurco (if we trade down) are my best picks at this point for us.

    Again, happy birthday mama!

  86. what about the goalie, gibson?, ya know because were gonna have to trade hank soon fit jagr, sundin and richards in to help set up gabby and carry him cross the ice too

  87. A Laurel Adorer on

We dont need anymore D. We need scoring. No Richards please; if ur gonna spend a boatload, spend it on the best.

  88. We’re either starved for Rangers news or really sad pandas to be spending our Friday nights watching a draft and commenting about it.
