And personally, I really don’t care much about the awards. The only one I am really rooting for is Jeff Skinner, he had a phenomenal rookie season. I’m disappointed by the fact that Torts wasn’t on the list for coach of the year, I bet he would have been had the Rangers finished in the 5-6 area.
I don’t see Avery listed in any category. I thought he was up for all the awards.

CCCP I did not say trade Callahan. I said his production and talent best suits a team on the 2nd or 3rd line. On the Rangers, he is the most consistent offensive player. That is a problem for the Rangers.

I went to this breakfast joint in town today; I got like twelve silver dollar pancakes, four strips of bacon, and a large orange juice for like seven bucks. And it was way more delicious than anything I’d get at House of Pancakes or Denny’s. But SEVEN BUCKS!
See, I’m not with the “safe pick” mentality. We have a lot of 2nd and 3rd liners, both on the roster and in the system. I’d rather potentially land a 1st liner, or trade down to where there will still be plenty of potential 2nd and 3rd liners, plus pick up an additional pick in the process.
bull dog, Landeskog is probably the most NHL-ready player in the draft, but I think his ceiling is a lot lower than RNH, Larsson, and Huberdeau. Those three guys are all potential superstars.
I also really don’t like Puempel. I’ve seen a lot of things criticizing his work ethic and also his skating ability.
McNeil is a big guy that doesn’t use his size, plus he has effort issues. Pass on him too.
Like I said, I’d rather go boom or bust for an offensive player like Grimaldi, Jensen, or Armia than take a guy who will probably be just another 2nd/3rd liner at best. If you want that, trade down and get more picks. Those guys are going to be a dime a dozen in the 20-40 range.
If Datsyuk wins the Selke, it’s on reputation alone. He didn’t play enough games.
It should be Toews, but it will be Kesler.
The Selke is awarded to the forward who demonstrates the most proficiency in the defensive component of the game. 56 games is plenty of time to demonstrate you are the most defensively adept forward.

He possesses the perfect mix of skill, desire and grit and is the Blueshirts’ best all around player. There are not enough good things you can say about Ryan, but I think there is one thing that sums up his value: every team in the league would love to have Callahan on their team, but only one team has him and that’s the Rangers

Not sure why Vegas isn’t a good pick for NHL..given the state of the Vegas economy I would think this would be good for the city and the local economy.
I’ve seen effort questions with Puempel. I just really don’t want a guy with effort issues. You can’t teach heart.
I make an exception for Jensen and Armia just because their upside is so damn high. Puempel projects to more of a 2nd line wing, while Jensen and Armia have first line potential.

I love Cally… but if we had 18 of him… we’d lead the league in hits, blocked shots, chipped teeth, broken legs… and not much else. You still need legit scorers in the mix… unless somehow you can get 18 guys on the roster to give you 20 goals each… then i’m pretty sure we’d be in great shape!
On a serious note… i wouldn’t mind having a Lucic or Blake Wheeler type player to park his rear in the crease and bang in garbage goals.

Most driven player… i’ll agree with that. Most talented however I disagree. Most talented in what regard? Heart doesn’t equate to talent, it does equate to work ethic.
Gaborik is our most talented player. If he played with Callahan’s passion and heart, he’d win the scoring title every year. Also if he could stay healthy all season for multiple seasons.

That’s a hard statement to take in context “most consistent talented player”.
He fits the Captain’s mold as far as leadership, setting examples, and work ethic are concerned. In spades.
However I cannot say he’s the most talented, or even most consistent talented player.
20 goal scorers are not consistently scoring… they occasionally score. What he DOES do EVERY SINGLE SHIFT is work his butt off, hit, grind, hustle… and all the other intangibles that make him great in his role.

Here is the problem, as regards resurrecting the Winnipeg Jets name. The Phoenix franchise, which owns all marketing rights to the name, is going to want big bucks for selling it. Too many big bucks, I surmise. Some will recall that when the Cleveland Browns relocated to Baltimore, everyone in Baltimore wanted to resurrect the Baltimore Colts name. But the Indianapolis Colts franchise wanted the sun, the moon, the stars, and all banks owned by the Rothschild family, in exchange for relinquishing the rights to the name “Colts.” Thus the Ravens were born.
Seems to me that the top brass of the Phoenix Coyotes (pardon for not referring to them as ‘Yotes,) would know by now if a deal has been struck to release the rights to the Jets name. Anyone with Don Maloney’s phone number could make a call and get the inside scoop. I understand the formal announcement of the new Winnipeg team name is forthcoming on Saturday. Can’t wait for the “let down” bad news.

Hey Gabby – You know how many people with “talent” have flopped in this world? Must be millions, and that’s a conservative figure. Success in any endeavor begins with having an abundance of heart and the closely-realated quality of spirit.
A good baseball comparison example. While I am not a Yankee fan, in fact, anything but, I admire Bret Gardner tremendously. When he came up to the majors, he was one of the most pathetic looking excuses for a major league ballplayer I have ever seen, going back to that Mets imposter, Rod Kanehl, who was the first ballplayer I ever saw who was deficient in basic athletic coordination.
I think Bret Gardner has worked as hard to establish himself as Pete Rose used to work, quite a compliment, to get to where he is now, an asset to the team, wherever they put him, however they use him. I never thought he would make it, and you may recall his batting average and his on-base percentage, in the first two years, were an embarrassment. He was just a speed specialist, as was Herb Washington with the A’s, years ago. With his work ethic, if Bret Gardner had real athletic ability and talent, he would be a legitimate Hall of Fame candidate. Few people I know of in this world I respect and admire more than Bret Gardner, regardless of the uniform he is wearing.
Rod Kanehl? He was a no-talent, expansion-era fraud as a major league ballplayer, with a 90-pound weakling work ethic to go with it, and though he was popular as an original Met, he didn’t last long. So don’t be too tough on the real heroes in our society who have more heart and soaring spirit to offer than anything else. You sell them short at you own peril.

Let’s see… Stahl was an all-star last year and so was Hank (that’s two of the best in the league). Even though Gaborik had a crappy season, he is one of the best snipers in the league (as we saw in his first season as a Ranger) so that’s three already. Erik Christensen along with Wolski and MZA are some of the best if not the best shoot-out players in the ENTIRE league! Too bad there’s No award for that, otherwise i bet you all three of them would have been at the NHL awards tonight! So, that makes it how many? SIX! Now, Bryan Boyle was probably the most improved player last year! The best in the league! Dany G led the league in blocked shots! The best in the ENTIRE league! BOOM! THAT EIGHT OF THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE!

Improved player, blocked shots, Wolski, Christensen, MZA = No. I Gaborik is very talented, yes, but inconsistent at best. Staal is okay and could grow into a superstar, but Staal is not there yet. I have already agreed that Lundqvist is among the best in the league. To think otherwise about Lundqvist would be foolish.

How much of a difference is there between Ryan Kesler and Ryan Callahan? How much better would/could Caly’s numbers be if 1. Anisimov takes the next step and becomes closer to an elite center and 2. He actually plays the whole season?
Not even remotely a stretch to consider that Henk will win a Vezina one of these years. Should have been a finalist this year, honestly only Thomas was better.
Not at all hard to see Gabby amongst the league leaders in scoring again, not a bit, if he stays healthy and Torts lets him run. And if, as opposed to a sophomore slump, Stepan takes the next step and becomes a 30-goal 60+ point guy centering Gabby.
The defense corps, if McDonagh and Sauer progress next year, and not even a ton, but simply progress, and if Staal stays healthy and Erixon pans out, could easily be amongst the league’s best.
Not this year, but the following year, Kreider has the size, speed and skills to be a Calder candidate.
If Boyle and Prust continue to improve, again pot 25 or so goals between them and play like gorillas on D and on the PK?
Lots of ifs, I know. But there isn’t nearly as vast a chasm as some would have you believe between where the Rangers are and how easily they could be where they need to be. And when teams do go far, it’s because all of the “ifs” fall into place. This could easily be a year in which they do.
