Your heroes have zero nominees for NHL awards this evening in Las Vegas—a choice of cities that I find revoltingly disgusting as the NHL joins every other filthy league in going for the almighty dollar and every last nickel at any cost.
But enough of that.
In case you’ve forgotten, here are the finalists for all the major awards that will be handed out:
Hart Trophy (MVP): Corey Perry, Daniel Sedin, Martin St. Louis.
Vezina Trophy (best goalie): Roberto Luongo, Pekka Rinne (Romano), Tim Thomas.
Norris Trophy (best defenseman): Zdeno Chara, Nick Lidstrom, Shea Weber.
Calder Trophy (rookie of the year): Logan Couture, Michael Grabner, Jeff Skinner.
Lady Byng Trophy (gentlemanly conduct … who cares?): Loui Eriksson, Nick Lidstrom, Martin St. Louis.
Selke Trophy (best defensive forward): Pavel Datsyuk, Ryan Kesler, Jonathan Toews.
Adams Award (coach of the year): Barry Trotz, Dan Bylsma, Alain Vigneault.
Masterton Trophy (perseverence and dedication): Ray Emery, Ian Laperriere, Daymond Langkow.
Ted Lindsay Award … formerly the Lester Pearson Award (NHLPA’s most outstanding player): Daniel Sedin, Corey Perry, Steven Stamkos.
Messier Leadership Award: Zdeno Chara, Shane Doan, Nick Lidstrom.
I’d like to know what you guys think. Remember, all voting was done at the end of the regular season, so playoff performances, or lack thereof, don’t count.

Defending the Core: A Rangers blog
”...Sticking on the subject of defensemen, I asked Clark about former first-rounder Michael Del Zotto, what happened to him last season and what might happen to him this upcoming season. Clark said that Del Zotto’s struggles last season certainly affected Marian Gaborik. In Del Zotto’s rookie season, Clark said, he was able to connect with Gaborik on long breakout passes. That was part of his game that faltered last season as teams adjusted to Del Zotto…
This never occurred to me.
And as far as the NYR having no plan coming into the draft, I think the NYR already had their pick: Erixon.
Is the “Messier Leadership Award” really in the same ceremony alongside those others. I mean I love Mess as well, but really? I thought that award was kind of like something out of Ken Danyko’s “Danny’s Den” – where the guys all drank a case of beer and gave out an award.
The nhl IS really hitting depths if they created this award to give away alongside the Hart. I mean isn’t “Leadership” kind of redundant to “Most Valuable Player” ?
And yes – -I just voted for the Bruins in 7 !!!
Hart Trophy (MVP): Daniel Sedin
Vezina Trophy (best goalie): Tim Thomas.
Norris Trophy (best defenseman): Shea Weber.
Calder Trophy (rookie of the year): Jeff Skinner.
Lady Byng Trophy (gentlemanly conduct … who cares?): Who cares?
Selke Trophy (best defensive forward): Pavel Datsyuk
Adams Award (coach of the year): Dan Bylsma
Masterton Trophy (perseverence and dedication): Ian Laperriere
Ted Lindsay Award … formerly the Lester Pearson Award (NHLPA’s most outstanding player): Steven Stamkos.
Messier Leadership Award: Nick Lidstrom.
Of course, I could be wrong…
I think Carp should get the Messier Leadership Award for holding this great place together.
Some knee-jerk observations:
2 of the 3 Vezina and Norris candidates are from same team…best goaliebest defenseman…I can see a strong relationship there-what is the difference between the Hart and the Ted Lindsay ? Isn’t the most outstanding player probably also the Hart winner ?
-they should give the Selke to Datsyuk and then rename it for him. He is the best defensive forward I have seen since….well…ever ! (better than Gainey, better than Federov)
-I vote for Carp for the Messier award
BTW..Carp, what’s your problem with Vegas ? I have been there twice…fun times !
why is there a line thru one of my sentences ?
Good morning, Carp! Best Blogfather Award!
Ah, The Annual Nebulous Awards…No wonder it’s in Vegas. “What Happens In Vegas Stays In Vegas”.
Good morning, boneheads!

I got bones in my head! Finkle and Einhorn! Einhorn and Finkle! Laces out!
Good morning all! Wouldn’t it be a riot (no pun intended) if Luongo beat out Thomas….
Give all the awards to Carp!
Thank you very much. I have so many people to thank for this honor as I humbly accept the Messier Leadership Award. ...
Actually, maybe we should give Mess the Carp Award.
Good morning, Sally!
My problem with Vegas, oh, I don’t know … maybe that it’s not an NHL city. Or a city where anybody outside the hall even knows that the NHL exists—besides the oddsmakers. Maybe because the other leagues have gotten into so much trouble there, because it invites its guests to misbehave and put themselves in positions to get into trouble. Maybe because, if it wasn’t for the dollars, the NHL would run screaming from a town like that.
Get Stamkos. Please? Sather? Please. Get Stamkos!
Good Morning Carp, Laurel, Ilb, Sally, and Manny! And of course all other important ‘heads as you make your way to the blog this fine ‘morn.
Sadly, i couldn’t care less about the NHL awards. Won’t be watching, don’t really care who wins. I probably would be interested if Rangers were up for anything.
mama… LOL at your riot pun!
Speaking of Odds…. NHL being in Sin City… shall we take guesses which player might get himself in trouble? As we saw from the all-star game, we know Skinner loves himself some vodka… wonder which players might um… take in the local entertainment??
Gab – I like guessing who will get into the most trouble. Maybe this bar tab will rival the Bruins $156K and change bar tab…..I really don’t care who wins. It’s nice that they get awards and they definitely all mean something but I still don’t really care. Just like I don’t want the ESPYs.
I hope all Americans win the awards and no europansies!
Who will take in the local entertainment? ALL of the players and coaches and attendees. These are professional athletes and sports world people man. They ALL want to enjoy the legalities that are unique to Las Vegas. It’s like having the World Cup in South Africa….The fringe industries will boom and in a few years the world will have a bit more STD’s to go around.
Yea the ESPY’s are a total joke.
The Rookie of the year, and Vezina are the only significant award in my eyes… and well yea i guess it’s nice to win the scoring title too.
Awards are stupid. Usually. I just think of baseball. Gold Gloves? Come on. It’s an award made up by a company to sell more gloves. It’s never given to the most deserving person. It’s always given to the most visible person so they can sell more gloves. The NHL needs to think of brands more!
Too bad the rangers don’t even get a sniff at these awards.. it tell’s us something about their talent level .

Tell us Carp , have you been placed on waivers ?
Bryzgalov looking for 7 years, 50 million. Enjoy Philly!
You think the Phlyers need a goalie? I thought they had 3!
geez 7 years for bryzgalov. ed snider will do anything for a goalie.
what time schedule come out today? anyone know
I have not yet been placed on waivers … as far as I know.
schedule tomorrow, eric.
People that will win (should win):
Hart: Sedin (St. Louis)
Vezina: Thomas (Thomas)
Norris: Chara (Weber)
Calder: Skinner (Skinner)
Lady Byng: Lidstrom (St. Louis)
Selke: Kesler (Toews)
Adams: Bylsma (Bylsma)
Masterton: LaPerriere (LaPerriere)
Lindsay: Perry (Perry)
Messier: Chara (Doan)
I have to say that I like that there is an award named after Ted Lindsay, but I don’t like that another award was renamed. Are they going to rename the Norris the “Orr” and eventually the “Lidstrom?” Or any bevy of scoring trophies “Gretzky?” Will the Adams become the “Bowman?” It all just seems silly to me.
first i heard tues for schedule then today now thursday. i cant wait to see our 10 game road trip to start the year
i will sign for 5-5 right now.
eric, anything except for invest in one in the last ~25 years.
The leadership award? I thought that award was done?...How does anyone not in the locker room know who’s providing the “best” leadership? It’s a dumb award.
New Hart Trophy poll over there———>
Brandon Prust will win the H(e)art trophy.
Prust spelled backwards is still Prust. Weird.
Michael Del Zotto spelled backwards is : Put me on the powerplay.
I think Torts may blow a gasket with the 24/7 crew in the lockerroom. Can you imagine if a camera guy steps on the logo??? NOW THAT’S GOOD TELEVISION!
Prust spelled backwards is still Prust. Weird.
__
Genius!
Gab – I was saying something similar last night. Torts is such a private guy. What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room. I can’t wait to see how he handles having an HBO crew hanging around looking for juicy footage.
NOXON is spelled exactly the same forward, backward, upside-down and backward/upside-down.
I think Torts would be great on 24/7 (even though I never saw a single episode of it) ... but he’d have a big problem giving anybody access to pre-game lockerroom, etc.
Doodie Machetto’s ranking of the Top 15 players the Rangers should draft:
Normally I suggest best available player, but since we are really deep on defense, they are going to be discounted a little bit.
1) Ryan-Nugent Hopkins
2) Jonathan Huberdeau
3) Adam Larsson
4) Gabriel Landeskog
5) Sean Coutourier
6) Mika Zibanejad
7) Dougie Hamilton
8) Ryan Strome
9) Mark Sheifele
10) Ryan Murphy
11) Rocco Grimaldi
12) Joel Armia
13) Nicklas Jensen
14) Jonas Brodin
15) Nathan Beaulieu
Honorable mentions to Thomas Jurco, Joe Morrow, Oskar Klefbom, and Jamie Oleksiak.
Players to avoid (and I think Rangers may actually pick): Tyler Biggs, J.T. Miller, Mark McNeil.
Carp, you should change that poll to who SHOULD win the Hart.
ok.
I have an affinity for Palindromes (which isn’t a palindrome – but does have the name PALIN in it)..
My favorite is: So Many Dynamos
ah crap, I already voted for Sedin under the old listing!
I want St. Louis!
A man a plan a canal Panama.
Dammit, I’m mad
Sorry if this was mentioned here already, but I just read it. Rule 48.

Mama, I think this one actually qualifies for WTF?....
Those are all Palindromes!
I’m aware, but still…:)
Step on no pets.
Carp – You are right re the Las Vegas venue for the awards being crassly commericial. These choices are not random. The broader implication here is that Bettman wants an NHL franchise in Las Vegas. Just as he wants a franchise in Kansas City, not because KC has a nice palatial arena, but because he knows a KC franchise would be another flop along the lines of HIS Atlanta expansion idea, and along the lines of the absurdly idiotic NHL presence in Columbus and Nashville. Hell, everyone knows if the Columbus and Nashville franchises moved to Moose Jaw and White Horse they would do better than they are doing now.
Have a nice day.
Thunder Bay deserves a team. The name alone would be awesome.
Nice Palindrome Mama!
Manny – My favorite palindrome is: SEXES. (Dirty old man, syndrome.)
My nominee for the Lady Byng Mink Shawl Trophy is: Christopher Drury.
good call on NOXON Carp. I’m poaching that through an offer sheet and will be using that on facebook!
During a field sobriety test, an officer once asked Prust to count backwards from 10. Prust told him the cop the officer didn’t have that long.
Gab you’re on Facebook? How are we not “friends.”
Morning ILB and all!!
LW welcome to my timezone!!!
Manny
LMFAO!!!
Orr
what russian tennis hottie is #1 on your list now?
Is the guy from fish called wanda still around?
Moving sucks!!!
My fave comments from the new rule 48 stuff…
“It’s a very slippery slope, and I know people say, ‘Why don’t they just give 50 games every time there’s one of these?’ ”Burke said. “Well, we don’t want to get to a game where there’s no hitting. If people want to watch that, they can go to Europe.”...did some one from here actually make that last part of the quote??? LOL!!
Rule 41 governing boarding was also broadened, Shanahan announced. It will now penalize any player who “checks or pushes” a defenseless opponent in a way that causes the opponent to strike the boards “violently or dangerously.”...thank you mr boychuk (should have been a suspension and how it will be)
NYR
your post of jagr’s comments were great…Jagr=putz

wicky?
I voted perry, just an FYI (usually not good at the awards, draft picks yes, awards no)
Defending the Visor Wearers: A Francophone Blog
I agree, I think the new rule is a good step forward. It still isn’t crystal clear, but it’s a step.
Wicky, are the dogs helping with your moving?
It is a step….as Richard Dreyfus says in “What about Bob?”......baby steps….
ILB
umm, no! Try the opposite!!
Thought so…..Afraid to ask, but are they all staying?
absolutely, nothing else is even an option!!
Wicky – you have to box up the dogs first. Then box up everything else.
Had no doubts! :-))

LOL! Nice palindrome, Izzy.
Wick, thanks! I hope he goes to the Wings! Good luck with the rest of the move!
Did you guys see MDZ RT’ing a fan that wants Stamkos? LOL! He needs to focus more on his passing and less on Tweeter…
Del Zotto LOVES twitter. I don’t personally understand Twitter so I can’t even understand what is happening on it. I just know that he loves it. He’s young. It shows.
I am indeed on FB manny… i’m ‘friends’ with Linda, Laurel and others.
You can probably find me through the Boneheads page on there.
I put a link to my FB on my name here so you could find it!
Youse are byfuglien nuts.
Who CARP? Who!? Say it to my face!
(too much coffee this morning)
I do not think that Del Zotto will be anything more than offense, if that.
Defending the Core: A Rangers blog
Then you are very shortsighted.
refresh, refresh, refresh
Manny, add sent.
Gab! To infinity and beyond!
TONY! Smoke-Free? Pants Free?
How am I shortsighted? I have studied Del Zotto’s career dating back to his early days in the OHL.
Defending the Core: A Rangers blog
Del Zotto’s early days were like 3 years ago…. the young pup that he is.
I saw grit and physicality his rookie season. As his body matures and he gets stronger, he’ll be more stable defensively… but he’s on Offensive D-man… let’s not assume he’s going to be a shut down guy or anything.
If he gives us offense, and helps on the PP, i’m good with that. We have Staal, Girardi, Sauer, Erixon, McD, and later McIllwraith to be a bruiser.
We’ll be ok defensively… we need goals!
Did we offer sheet Stamkos yet?
Ignore the troll!
I don’t think you can make an offer sheet until July 1st.
I am still LOL’ing over the comments I’m reading on Puck Daddy’s post about Bryzgo’s purported contract with the Flyers. At best he stops maybe 20 goals more than what their goaltending was already doing. But in order to fit him in under the cap they probably have to trade someone that creates at least that many goals scored, if not more.
I fully support them giving him the 7 year/$50M deal.
Amen, CT. Please let the Phlyers give him that contract! Please!
They might just be desperate enough to do it. I don’t understand why they don’t just get a guy like Vokoun to make a run. Maybe Bobrovsky will be ready once Vokoun’s 1 year contract is up.
Atta boy, Tony!
101!!
Doodie
Why do you think we should avoid drafting Biggs?
CCCP?
Manny?
Mike?
Carp?
Manny?
Gab?
I think his upside is limited. I think we could get two picks with similar upside by trading down. I’ve also read that he can be undisciplined with penalties.
He’s more NHL ready than most, but I just don’t see him with a real ceiling. I think he would fit in on our team as a 3rd line wing, maybe a 2nd line wing in a pinch.
I’d rather take a boom or bust offensive player like Rocco Grimaldi.
doodie?
Tony?
Hey Carp – do you know what the record for posts in a day is around here?
It’s gotta be either trade deadline, July 1, or after a playoff loss.
I was actually wondering if trade deadline would rival a playoff loss. Funny that you’re right on it, doodie.
I like Grimaldi and Jurco. I think they will be available to the Rangers at 15….they both have world class skill but can also be boom/bust picks…
Obviously, you take Coutourier if he’s available…but, I think he goes top 5…
Rocco Grimaldi? sounds like a porn star name!
Rocco Grimaldi stars in: Armagonnagetin!
I really enjoy making pornographic style names for LOTR. None are appropriate for this forum unfortunately.
NYR_Fan, yes, obviously Cutourier will be long gone by 15 (I actually think he goes in the 6-9 range since he isn’t top 4 and the Islanders are going to go defense if they have any brains). I ranked everyone just so I could see how far someone could slip to us.
I think Grimaldi is a possibility, but I really think they take JT Miller or Tyler Biggs.
LOL! CCCP, that’s hilariously inappropriate…
Yea, CCCP…come on. Grow up! (jk)
NEVER!
Why I oughtta….......
Grimaldi ? Another Italian ? How many Europansies can we afford on this team?
Yet another GREAT point ilb. Is there a max contract limit for europansies? We might be over it already.
Grimaldi’s is a GREAT pizza place in my neighborhood!
Ugh, It’s ok. They’ve fallen in love with their own hype so now there is a crazy line and insane price. Good pizza, don’t get me wrong, but I still don’t even think it’s the best.
Rangers don’t need any more players affiliated with the pizza business.
Actually, I can see it from my office (or close to it, rather)
When the most consistent offensive player on a team is Callahan, the team is in trouble. Brad Marchand was one of the best Boston Bruins throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year. Brad Marchand was a rookie this year and is not one of the Bruins most talented players, and Marchand helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup. An offense that is in good shape is an offense in which Ryan Callahan is a 2nd or 3rd liner and not one of your top three scorers.
Defending the Core: A Rangers blog
Ryan Calllahan is better than you!
Doodie,
I don’t have a top 15, but I do have a wish list. some more realistic than others.
1 hope the Rangers trade up and take Landaskog. I think he is the best player in the draft.
2 hope Zibanejad falls. like him a lot.
3 Armia, natural goal scorer.
4 Matt Puempel, gifted goal scorer, will probably be there when Rangers pick.
I think they end up taking Matt Mcneill. ha has been dropping in most mocks to the Rangers. safe, solid pick.
Anyone planning on going to the winter classic?
Trade Callahan?
Callahan had a career year with 23 goals and 48 points in just 60 games! If not for the injuries, i bet he would hit 60+ points easily. Not too shabby for a third liner, eh? So David…take your whining somewhere else.
They need to draft one of
McNeil, Peumpel, Scheifele, Arima,
Biggs, or Ryan Murphy if for some reason he should slide.
Would not go anywhere near Grimaldi. He is just simply too small.
We can’t afford anymore first round busts like bobby sags give bust and the soon to be bust named Mcilrath.
new post.
I would also use Girardi in a trade along with next years number two for this years first(#9) and this years third.
I would use that pick on Zibinjad or Murphy. If they come pit of this draft with Zibinjad, or Murphy, and McNeil, and Erixon, Sather would have had the best off-season he ever had here.
