Yesterday we touched on how it’s been a good time for the Euros and a bad time for the Americans. Well, maybe we exaggerated (except for the PGA Tour) just a bit. (By the way, for the second timd, an American won the Conn Smythe Trophy, though I can’t really remember who was the first).
Anyway, this weekend is the NHL entry draft.

Not to mention our boys on the pitch played reasonably well against a Jamaica side that hadn’t conceded a goal in the group stage of the gold cup. Now a rematch against panama tomorrow night and a victory over smugly overconfident mexico in front of 75,000 fans of el tri at the rose bowl on saturday night will be even sweeter. (there will probably be about 30,000 fans of the red white in blue in audience as well—that is an improvement because as late as 1990 when mexico played the us in california you could count american fans in attendance on dos manos.)
By the way as much as some argued chara should have been jailed for what he did to pacioretty last march, how about boom boom on murphy last night in 1953. That was sick, cringeworthy stuff right there and they replayed it like 16 times. And the spear on sullivan. Hockey really has europansied, and i do mean that in the best way possible.

Brooks says the NHL schedule will confirm Winter Classic on January 2 for Rangers/Flyers. Glad to see NYR in it, but couldn’t they spread the love around and play in New York? It would be great if they played at Beaver Stadium, but it sounds like it’s gonna be Citizens Bank. I guess they’ll leave the big game for whenever the Penguins play the Flyers.

I was reading Newsday yesterday and found this amusing… I read one article that was discussing players the Rangers might draft, where they said there wasn’t alot of high end talent, and most scouts agreed very few ‘difference makers’.
Then i read another article about who the Islanders might draft, and they talked about teams not worrying about trading down, because the draft was really deep, and you can get good picks late first round and into the second round.
I mean… get your stuff straight… either it’s a deep draft, or it’s not!

LW, 100 percent correct. It is the Open Championship. We say British because it can be confusing since we call our Open “the Open.”
I think the toughest are wrestlers (real wrestlers, like in high school and college, not the roiders on TV). Out there all alone, no place to run, no ducking, no jab-and-hide, no rope-a-dope; using 100 percent of your strength and effort without stopping for three minutes at a time.
There are no prohibitive rules in NHL code against this motion. Is it?

Carp, I think it depends on the definition of toughness. If you define toughness as mental fortitude, then amateur wrestlers would definitely be up there (although I would still give the edge to boxers).
However, if we are talking about toughness in terms of ability to absorb pain, then I would actually put professional wrestlers up near the top. The stories and punching and kicking are all fake, but being having your body thrown about and slam on floors and mats, etc. still legitimately hurts.
But guys like Keith show how tough Hockey players are. He got what, 3 root canals in between periods and came back to play int the game? These guys take punishment and get right back out there. Stuff that would put the rest of us out of work from our day jobs for a week.

i only pay $150 a month for triple play gold package! I called cablevision some time ago and got them to sign me up for promotional year with fixed monthly payment of $150 bucks! Once that promotion runs out (and i know my bill will sky-rocket to about $250 a month) i’m cancelling the gold package and my home phone! I am not too thrilled with Lundqvist. It does not seem like Lundqvist will ever make the big save when the team needs him to. Dating back to the blown three goal lead in East playoffs v. the Penguins and the Game 7 game tying goal v. the Capitals in the East playoffs and the shootout loss v. the Flyers in final game of regular season 2010.

It is not just the amount of saves that a goalie makes that defines him. It is the quality of the save, the situation surrounding the save. How many of the 46 shots prior to the most important shootout attempt were quality shots?

David: You are one of the many people that pointlessly tarnish Lundqvists reputation. He plays with children in front of him. Anisimov deflects pucks into his own goal off his back, legs and whatever else he can get in the way. Gaborik battles Lundqvist for the puck and often wins that battle…scoring on his own net.
Lundqvist is an elite goalie. I would love for the rangers to get to a situation where we could even SEE if Lundqvist could make the big save. The problem is that the team doesn’t get him there. Get him into the Stanley Cup finals, Game 7 and see how he does.
Remember people LOVE Luongo. Particularly the people that gave him a 150 year contract. How does that look right now?

Lundqvist, like many hockey players has two reputations: one on the ice and one off. You are tarnishing his on ice reputation by pointing out the saves he didn’t make. Even the mighty Timmy Thomas doesn’t make ALL the saves. No one does (excect maybe Doodie’s dog, Bear). This is why when someone levels a dirty hit we debate whether or not they are a good person or not, because the on ice stuff is separate (most of the time) from the on ice stuff.
As to your veiled criticism of ORR (different than the one in your tag). Come on.

David, you’re welcome to your opinion. I just think that the observations of the games themselves disagree with your assessment. As I said before, Lundqvist made several amazing saves in that Philly game.
Furthermore, the goaltender’s job is not to have a shutout in every game. Allowing only 1 goal in a do or die game is fantastic, especially when it involves not only a high number of saves, but a high number of high quality saves. It is instead the failure of his team to not capitalize on his effort and keep the game from going to a shootout.
Finally, you point to the OT goal in Washington, but again, that was more of a failure of his teammate’s to adequately ensure that there would not be a bad turnover in the defensive zone during overtime. You ignore the fact that he had played nearly flawlessly for most of the contest, making several incredible stops.
Would you have said that Tim Thomas was just unable to get the one save he needed after the losses in games 1,2, and 5? You simply cannot blame the goaltender when he played sufficiently well to give the team a chance to win.

it doesn’t matter how many were quality, or great scoring chances… yada yada yada.
Fact is: if he had let ONE of the previous 46 shots get by him, there wouldn’t have been a shootout to talk about.
And on the subject of the shootout… I’m pretty sure Hank’s stats are probably at or very near the top of the league in overall Shootout stats.
You choose not to mention all the games he won, just one big one he lost.

I’m still putting the failure of that season and the playoffs in 2009 and 2011 on the offense (where over their last 12 playoff games the Rangers have averaged like 1.85 goals per game). I remember reviewing that season and finding at least 8-10 games where Lundqvist allowed 2 or less goals and they still lost.
Citing one off examples to discredit an entire body of work is a very hollow argument.
It’s starting to look, sound, and, most importantly, smell very familiar….

David can readily discuss Henrik’s inconsistency because that is the goalie most of us are most familiar with. We watch all or most of the games and what not, so we remember.
Tim Thomas was also criticized this season for his style of play, which led to soft goals, and bad losses and so forth…. heck he was even insulted by another goalie in the Finals!
So no goalie or player is above criticism… it just has to be taken with a grain of salt. It’s easier to point out the bad then to remember all the good.
At least we’re not dealing with Jose Three-or-more, or have the goalie carousel that is the Flyers team…. so we should consider ourselves fortunate in that regard.
If you want to harp on a shootout loss to end the season, or letting in the occassional soft goal…. i’ll learn to live with it when i think about all the good he can and will do for the team in the future.

I would say, just from a review of the highlights of that game, that Lundqvist stopped about 10 shots that if they went in, I wouldn’t have blamed him. And that’s just the highlights chosen by NHL.com. There could be plenty more that were omitted.

Blueshirt If you want to attribute failure to the season and playoffs of particular years, I attribute blame to the offense, defense, and goaltending. My original post was that I do not see Lundqvist making the big save when the team needs him to.

Then you’re either not watching entire games or watching particularly for instances where he fails to make a save.
But the fact that you’re using a fairly short list to illustrate a point that’s flimsy at best doesn’t make your argument any more valid. Why don’t you try to make a list of games where he’s made big saves that have kept his team in the game or saves that kept the Rangers in the lead. I bet that list is a lot longer.
David – if you don’t think. Lundqvist is among the top ten goaltenders in the world, you simply don’t know hockey. In fact, I’d say he’s top five in the world, if you factor in the team in front of him. He’s a hundred times better than Luongo and either on par or better than Miller. Talk about inconsistency and you’re talking about Fleury and Price, both of whom can either show up or miss the game altogether. Cam Ward, Halak, Howard and Bryzgolov are both in a tier down from Hank. Kiprisoff might have held a candle to his play five years ago, but not now. That basically leaves Thomas and Rinne as the only two I could honestly say are better than Hank. Thomas has Chara. Rinne has Webber and Suter. Both are better than what is in front of Hank, which is not to detract from Staal or Girardi. But let’s be honest. Am I missing someone here? Who do you think is better? If any team in the league would do a one-for-one deal for Hank, what goalie would you take? I bet you 90 percent of the teams in th NHL would do that deal without a thought.

What is relevant is the number of times Lundqvist has failed his team when compared with other goalies. phil Never did I state Lundqvist was not among the best in the world.

Tim Thomas has 2 years where he’s been the better goalie than Lundqvist, this year and 08/09. Let’s not forget he lost his job to Rask last season. Also, most years he’s played at least 12 games less.

Look at how many times the Devils have made the playoffs with colossal collapses. Are you going to say Brodeur can’t get his team over the hump? What about some of those stacked Avalanche teams. Going to say Roy wasn’t good enough? Hasek couldn’t ever get the Sabres a Cup. Going to say it was his allowance of the Brett Hull OT winner that cost them?
CTB, if we were talking one season, I would make the Thomas for Lundqvist swap easily. There is simply no debating that he is the best goaltender in the world right now. But if we’re talking about building a franchise, Lundqvist has to be in the top 3 of goaltenders any team would choose.
The Brett Hull goal was an illegal goal. Brodeur has won 3 Stanley Cups, so he has done something right. Roy and Hasek were multiple Stanley Cup winners. How many playoff series has Lundqvist won? His age and the fact that Thomas lost his job to Rask in the 2009-2010 season makes his story more remarkable and for me, casts a larger shadow on Lundqvist.

David, then list the other times great goalies have “made the saves that counted” and compare it side by side with Lundqvist.
The focal point of your rather amorphous argument is using a handful of examples as proof. In order for anyone to take you serious you need to provide valid comparisons with Lundqvist’s peer group.
What would you say of Tim Thomas in the finals? He didn’t win the close games, Luongo did. He totally blew in on the OT goal in game 2 and didn’t make the save that mattered in game 5. Maybe he won because the Bruins scored like 20 goals in the final 4 games.

Hey remember when Lundqvist was in the discussion for Conn Smythe and when he didn’t make the final three a lot of hockey people thought it was a snub?
Dah! Vezina…not conn smythe….yet!
Hasek finally won a stacked Wings team in 02 that had 7 future HOF players on it, Lundqvist wins the Cup on that team. He barely played in 08 and was replaced during the first round.
Roy in 86 and 93 was probably the only goalie in the last 30 years to be the primary reason their team won. He had stacked Avs teams in 96 and 01.

Just answer honestly on one question: if Rangers would score one more goal against Philty and Caps in mentioned games, would we even have this so called discussion? Earlier you were saying that failures are attributed to the whole team. Offense, defense and goaltending. Now you’re saying they won’t win because of Lundqvist’s inability to make the saves that count? Which one is it?

Mike Richter won in 94 on a stacked Rangers team.

As with any athlete, we are free to nit-pick. We make excuses for winning, losing, coming close, being way off… and on and on it goes.
Opinions are impossible to argue, because they change all the time, and most times are not based on perfect facts. Opinions are also emotionally charged, which clouds logic and often leads to irrational defense.

The Chicago Blackhawks (completely stacked by the way) thought so much of their Stanley Cup winning goalie Anti Niemmi that they didn’t bring him back after the Cup run.
My point is… sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, and the best goalies don’t always win the cup, sometimes it’s just the best ‘team’.
When Hank is on a team like that, he will win the cup.
Or to rephrase… when the Rangers have that talent level, they, and hank, will win the cup.
2012 is going to feature no fewer than 4 defensemen who are superior to Pitkanen. Plus, it gives us an opportunity to further evaluate our very young defensive corps.
What does “this stage” even mean? At the NHL level? In the playoffs? Contrary to popular belief and as much as MSG propaganda would lead you to believe, NY is not the biggest stage in the NHL. I’d list Montreal and Toronto (when they finally have a contending team will have enormous expectations on them) as having more pressure, and pretty much any Canadian city right now with the chance to win the Cup due to Canada’s Cup drought. I’d even put Detroit ahead of NY because of the higher expectations to win given their team.

Blueshirt This stage meant New York. Hockey is Canada’s game and there likely is more pressure to win there on contending teams, but it is arguable. Using one example, Vancouver cheered their team after their team was embarrassed in Game 7. Their goalie cheered after being embarrassed in four losses in the series.

Maybe this is old news others are long aware of, but I just saw that the Rangers cannot buy-out Drury because of his chronic injury situation, so that his cap hit of 7+million for this coming season stays on the books.
Rather than blast Drury before the issue is resolved, I will stand back and say, let’s see if he is reasonable, if he at least meets the club half-way? If he does, then he will be exhibiting class and dignity I have not seen in him before. But if he just takes the full 7+million, contributes nothing on the ice, and laughs all the way to the bank, I will have to say that, for the first time in my lifetime as a New York Rangers fan, I actually dislike a Ranger player with a passion and intensity.
In fact, years ago, when I was professional athlete playing age and used to attend about 20 home games per year, I felt a brotherly kinship with the players, and wished that God had given me the talent to don the uniform and contribute to the Ranger cause.
So let’s just wait and see what unfolds here, but I am not optimistic that this man will do the right thing and take some responsibility for his condition, in the best interests of the organization.

The whole concept of “making the big save” is nebulous at best. As is that of a goalie being garbage if he hasn’t won a certain number of series or Cups regardless of the teams he was on (last time I looked this was a team sport.)
And when your argument is that these things completely outweigh measurable concepts such as career statistics, then the argument loses all credibility in my eyes. Not even relating this to Lundqvist specifically – it’s tiresome when these views are put across in the wider media about any number of players.

Drury contract calls for five years, total 35.25 million = 7.05 million per year. Column I read said that the Rangers are stuck for the final 7.05 million, and it stays on the salary cap books.

Boom Boom, if they can’t buy him out, his total hit of $7.05M counts against the cap, but it could be used to go over the cap up to that amount. A few days back we had a long discussion about it, and most of us felt that as long as they can stay under the summer cap number, it could actually be beneficial to the team. And with a new summer cap number at $70.4M, it seems even more doable.
True, ilb, but there have been plenty of regulars on here over the last couple of years making the same tired argument about Lundqvist and goalies in general, not just Orr’s new friend.
But hey, I’m now 1-0 lifetime in making the big post when it counts, so that makes me officially the greatest poster in Rangers Report history, regardless of the other mediocre Carcillo I might have pumped out.

All this talk about Jagr is making me think about where he will ultimately end up. Interesting thought…I am inclined to think that Pittsburgh is perhaps his best bet (although I would personally hate it) because he would probably receive preferential treatment from the refs playing with Crosby there. It’s just the way it is…remember back in the 2008 playoffs how lopsided the officiating was in the Pitt series?
