Rory McIlroy: Europansy

I’m back. Tough week for me. Tough week or so for Americans and North Americans, too. Great week for Europe.

Dirk Nowitzki walks away with the NBA championship trophy. Zdeno Chara carts off the Stanley Cup. Rory McIlroy obliterates the field at our national golf championship (and U.S. golfers have their first-ever drought of five straight majors). Wimbledon begins and though I know jack about tennis, I know there aren’t any American men very highly regarded in that one.

Didn’t mind being off during the hours I spent in the chair in front of the TV this week. My favorite moment — and there’s a definite relation to this blog — was the face time our friend and founder Sam Weinman got after McIlroy’s victory as he stood with McIlroy’s dad off the 18th green.

Atta boy, Sammy!

For those who are new, or for people Googling McIlroy and ending up here, please let me explain that the term “Europansy” is indeed derogatory, but that we here use it mocking those who use, and who have used it recently, it in a derogatory fashion. We here — many of us Euros, in fact — admire the Euros and their accomplishments with a wink and a nod when we mention the Europansies. It is a term of endearment. These are great Euro champions.

But, hey, we don’t take anything too seriously around this place. Do we?

So I can talk hockey this week as it happens. I guess, and I’m not sure, but it sounds as if the Captain is gone one way or another, right? That’s worth discussing. This week is time for buyouts and 2011-12 schedules (your heroes will see lots of Europansies when that starts), Wednesday is awards night. The weekend is the NHL draft. And soon July 1’s Spend-A-Thon.

Here we go.

About Author

  1. According to TSN, salary cap will be $64M next season, with a floor set at $48M. I guess the hockey business has been good. Well, those numbers will surely make a lot of owners unhappy. Which means we could expect serious difficulties with next year’s CBA.

  2. Oh, yeah, forgot….The above two posts were created by Europansy, in case you didn’t know.

Welcome Back Carpy! Nice to see the Sheriff return!

  4. Welcome back, Carp!!

That was some kind of performance by McIlroy! It was awesome to watch him dominate the field like that and break so many US Open records. What a special player!!

  5. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

all hail the return of the Godfather of the boneheads…did your USGA index go up or down?

goodbye Drury, Avery, Wolski….hello Richards…welcome back Good Gabby…

  6. Carp – don’t be so down on American tennis! We have Mardy Fish, The Brian Brothers, Melanie Uodin and Taylor Dent! (The will all valiantly go out in the first 2 rounds)

I’ve got bones in my head!

  7. It was really nice to see Mcllroy do so well. I really feared a final day collapse like at the masters. Also nice to have such a young guy dominating golf again. (Or at least poised to). Even if he is a flippin’ europansy.

  8. Yeah! Wasn’t it, Manny? Looks like he really learned alot from the Masters experience. I expect him to win the British too…

McIlroy = Youngest player to win the US Open since Bobby Jones in 1923…

Defending the Dreary: A Pizza blog

  9. Since Bobby Jones! That is a name of legend. What a great golfer he was. I grew up with a father who was a scratch (or better) golfer. He worshiped Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead and others of similar ilk. Must be weird to be 22 or whatever Rory is and be compared to them already!

And after next season, the salary cap will be at least 10% higher than this year if the league’s other revenue stays flat. The new tv contract is the reason.

  11. Rhode Island Ranger on

Great win by McIlroy. But, does he get stuck with the Europansy label solely because of his birth in the North of Ireland? Or is that more properly a cultural/behavioral category?

Very tough customers Owen Nolan and Sean Thornton both have humble Belfast roots and hardly seem to qualify as Europansies!

  12. Welcome back Carpedo….my dad is a big golf fanatic and he was shocked at how the mcelroy kid performed….i maybe shouda watched it lol

  13. Golf? Heck yes! I used to play a LOT of golf but living in the city I am sure my skills have diminished. I don’t play 36 a day anymore.

  14. Nice! I try to play once a week during the season, if I can. ~15 handicap…

I know what you mean about the city! Since I moved out of Manhattan last year, I have played a lot more golf…

  15. North of Ireland. Nice work RIR. I for one am ready for some tinkering with the roster. We have a core that goes through the wall or at least puts their ankles in front of slapshots. Thats the fire we need on this team and the kind of mentality necessary to build champions or a team that puts their ankles in front of slap shots.

  16. 15 is a great handicap. My father always told me to aim for “Bogey Golf” which would put you at an 18. Therefore, anything south of there is good.

  17. I don’t even know if I could break 100 anymore. I was at one point shooting in the low 80’s or high 70’s but those days are over (you don’t have to sell your body to the night….Roxeanne). I still teach golf to people, because I still have the Ben Hogan book memorized but I can no longer replicate it.

  18. also not to mention that the relocation from Atlanta to Winnipeg can only increase revenue going forward especially if that lovely 60 mil dollar relocation fee gets counted as well.

  19. Yeah, it’s okay. Although, my game can be inconsistent…kind of like Brandon Dubinsky’s….

Filatov can be had for a 4th round pick. I say make the deal, even though we won’t have a pick from 2-4.

  21. You can bet the owners and Bettman will try to negotiate a lower cap next year, that would probably still be the main point of new CBA. It won’t be easy.

  22. Doodie Machetto on

Can’t wait for the draft. On Friday, I think we should all post our ranking of the top 15 prospects in terms of value to the Rangers. That way, we can see if the Rangers picked well according to our own draft boards.

For instance, being deep at defense, I would rank defensemen a bit lower than usual, but if a great player fell to me at 15 (someone like Dougie Hamilton who has been sliding down draft boards lately), I’d grab him.

I’m assuming this was agreed to by all parties because MSG is not hosting any preseason games next season…

I think the RFA on our team that is going to be the most overpaid in terms of % of dollars is going to be Boyle. He’s going to cash in those 21 goals for 2 million, while everyone ignores the facts that 21 goals is way more than he has ever scored, that he didn’t do carcillo in the 2nd half of the season, and that he is just going to be our 4th line center next season. 1 million, tops, or let him walk.

  54. You’re right about pro-rated two-way guys, Doodie. Both Erixon and McIlrath are on EL, two-way contracts. They need to make the team before their contracts count against the cap.

  55. Boyle has to learn to play his size! Don’t pay him until he learns to play big, screen goalies and bang home rebounds. I don’t want a 6’7″ europansy type fancy footed player.

  56. wicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 5 LLPs!!) on

I think boyle, in terms of attitude and work ethic, is exactly what you want out of a player. At this point, 2 million is acceptable IMHO (4 million is not). He fought shelley for crying out loud (yes he lost, but was willing)…enuff said!

So was Aaron Voros, who willingly fought (and lost to) anyone that stood in his way. Sorry, but we need to start moving beyond guys that just give effort and start getting players that give effort and have talent as well.

Boyle was #1 in hits actually, but I’d rather him have half as many hits that are effective than his little hits that do nothing. He is one of the smallest big men I’ve ever seen.

I think he is very easily replaceable. I’d much rather have a guy like Raffi Torres at that price.

  68. Boyle is an interesting problem. Assuming the Rangers get Richards or somebody else to be first line center that would make Boyle the 4th line center. As a 4th liner he probably won’t have the opportunity to score 21 goals again. Do you think that since he’s still young and improving and could possibly become a 30 goal scorer? If that’s the case, then what do you do with him? If he’s a potential 30 goal scorer you don’t put him on the 4th line. So, do you lowball him or do you trade him now that he has some value?

  69. It’s true. His hits are like dry humps. He needs to hit harder but most importantly get into that crease and have some brutality to his game! Score some hard nosed goals.

  81. So since we need to spend up to the cap limit in order to get the most out of Drury’s LTIR number, anyone else want to see us bring Jagr back for the 1 year deal he wants? I’m assuming he won’t have 7.5 million like before, but for a 3-3.5 million, I’d take the guy back just for the hell of it. Can’t hurt the team, fans love him, Dubi loved playing with him, and guys like Anisimov could learn a ton from him.

Now if Jagr things he’s getting 7 mil again, then f that, but if we’re going to spend the money, I’d rather it be on Jagr than some chump like Connelly, Arnott, Ryder, or Handzus.

  82. Gift of GAB-orik on

Hey there ‘heads! Ahh summer time… draft soon, crazy spending spree also soon…. it’s quite the summer thus far….

cap ceilings, cap floors, injured captains, buy-outs, rfa negotiations, summer workout updates, return of mdz?, who do we draft?, who do we trade for?, richards or no richards? return of jagr (?) where does avery fit, does avery fit, 86 number 86? line depth, team identity, beer-on healthy, krieder getting his education, opening in sweden, hank’s homecoming….. ok that’s enough for now.

  83. Also, Boyle WAS our 4th line center last year. Just so happened that him, Prust, and Feds had great chemistry so they got more ice time than most of our previous 4th lines (except the Betts/Orr/Hollweg love fest that Renney would put against top lines).

  84. I love Jagr! He’s my favorite player of all time. I would love to see him on the team, but I just don’t think he fits in anymore. There’s just no room. The direction this team’s going in, I can’t imagine any interest.

Maybe Sather is interested, but Torts probably is not.

Besides, we’re not winning the Cup next year, or the year after, and probably the year after that, so I’d rather see him on a contending team, like the Wings, Pens, etc, because he’s getting old, and if he returns to the NHL, it’s not going to be for long.

  85. As an unashamed Jagr fanboy, I would love him back on a one year deal. But, I have a feeling he’s going to want too much money and I’m sure there will be a team out there that’s willing to give him it.

Thanks for the U.S. Open and golf primer, Carp. Some tidbits and trivia I uncovered:

Besides the winner, Rory McIlroy, one other top-20 finisher from N. Irleland is Graeme McDowell, who finished in a five-way tie for 13th.

Nine USA players finished in the top-20, so the foreign contingent has a strong presence. Top USA finishers were Kevin Chappell and Robert Garrigus who tied with two others for 3rd.

Jason Day, yet to win a major this year, is quietly making a statement of possible future success by finishing tied for 2nd in this year’s Masters, and alone in 2nd place in this year’s U.S. Open.

Charles Schwartzel, who won the Masters, showed up again in the U.S. Open, finishing in a two-way tie for 9th place.

Other countries, besides N. Ireland, hitting the board with top-20 representation include: Australia, England, South Korea, Spain, South Africa, and Sweden. Wondering, by contrast, how the American contingent will do, competing in the European’s back yard at the British Open (hate that made for TV “The Open Championship” crap), next month.

Glad so many here enjoyed it, and nice going Sam, for being in the middle of it all.

Orr – you may be right about the Rangers not winning the Cup over the next three years, but I wouldn’t bet the ranch on that, because they/we will be a SERIOUS contender. With some astute off-season moves, trades and training camp promotions this club is going to be right in the thick of it. Then anything, including the luck factor, can happen. Had it not been for the Rome-Horton incident, does anyone think the Bruins would have found the force to come back and win it all? No one can say, for sure, but I think without that incident happening, Vancouver would have gone all the way. Momentum anyone? lol
