Happy 17th anniversary, Rangers fans

159

Yup, Flag Day, 17 long years ago today. Best day in Rangers history. Right?

Game 7. The Cup in the house (for the second time). Well, you know the rest.

——————————-

Wish I could talk about Game 6 of the 2011 series, but since I’m writing this on Sunday, I can’t talk about Game 6, or if there will be a Game 7, or if it is now baseball/golf season (ed. note: from Thursday through Sunday or Monday, it is golf season … as far as I’m concerned, this is the finals, the U.S. Open).

So if there is a Game 7 coming, well, talk about it yourselves. Hope there is.

If there isn’t, well, then I’m really happy for Manny Malhotra. But I have a feeling his Cup celebration will have to wait until Wednesday night.

See youse.

  1. Greatest date, I agree. Rangers win the cup in 1994 and my daughter is born 5 years later, 1999

  2. Good morning all! Well, I guess I’ll try to remember the good times from 17 years ago instead of last night. And it seems I left here just in time…Yes, indeed, I do so love people. Sigh.

  3. I will always remember 17 years ago but looking forward to this upcoming season.

  4. It’s an odd emotion for me because I actually feel nostalgic and happy about 1994 but at the time I was a Whalers fan. Even though they were horrible. I still pulled for the Rangers in the playoffs but they weren’t my #1 (and only) yet. Still an awesome day!

    Let’s Go Rangers!

  5. “This One Will Last a Lifetime!” – who knew we would have to take it so literally. Hopefully, history will repeat itself again and the Canucks will falter in yet another Game 7 for the Cup. Perhaps Roberto Luongo should just shut up and worry about stopping the puck instead of whining about not getting enough props. If he did, he might actually finish a Stanley Cup game in Boston for a change .

  6. I would HATE to be the Canucks head coach. Think about it. Luongo has been awful, at Boston. He was horrendous last night. But he has been lights out on home ice. So you’re in a loss-loss situation if you don’t win tomorrow night. Luongo plays and you lose – you obviously should have started C. Schneider and if you start Schneider and you lose then you should have gone with Luongo. He will start Luongo and they will win because no one has lost on home ice so far. But I am just saying…….

  7. Boston lands five goals against Vancouver last night, bringing their total to 19 goals in six games(blanked twice, two goals in Vancouver, then eight, four and now five in Boston). Over that time, the Canucks have managed a paltry eight goals(two one-nothing games, three in the overtime game, one in the blowout and two last night). That makes the series differential 19-8 in favor of the Bruins! Vancouver would need to score 11 unanswered goals tomorrow to even up with what the Bruins have scored.

Now here’s a question to you stat buffs: When was the last time a team won the cup with such an overwhelmingly negative differential? When was the last time their was such a disparity in the series scoring?

  8. Wow!! Mason Raymond broke his back last night on that Boychuk hit…out 6 months according to Kyper…crazy! Hope he’s ok…

    ——

    Luongo is elite. Bwahahaha!

  9. LOL @ the Rangers fan invading game 6! It looks like he has two jerseys on! Looks like he lifts the Bruins jersey to expose the Rangers jersey underneath! OK!

  10. That was not a punishable hit by Boychuk, but it was utterly dirty. He rode a defenseless player hard against the boards and Raymond hit it with his back…There was no way he could protect himself.

  11. Ya know I said to Nora and Linda last night I said “ya know what? I think he broke his ass!” I said. I was close.

  12. To answer Phil’s question, I haven’t been able to find any best of 7 series where the winner had that big of a negative goal differential.

For Vancouver to win the Cup, the goal differential will be at worst -10.

Even winning the Cup with a +10 goal differential is difficult, Colorado had a +10 against the Panthers in 1996.

  13. I really like Brad Marchand’s game…was talking to a buddy last week and we agreed that he reminds us of Callahan…

Kid has a lot of potential…

  14. Yea …he’s really awesome to watch. And a possible Conn Smythe if that Timmy Thomas guy didn’t exist.

  16. I’ll never forget that feeling 17 years ago! Can’t believe it’s been that long already. Seems like yesterday.
They just said on our local news that Sean Avery is up here in Albany at the Capital. I guess he’s here to support that gay marriage thing.

  17. He did look quite handsome, didn’t he Mama!
Good thing I don’t work down there anymore because you know where I would be!

  18. Had I known, Julie, I would dusted off an old press pass :) I love the quote in the video, “I can take care of myself.” Classic Aves.

  19. Great videos! Thank youse! ;)

    I love the first video!

So…did Messier score the GWG or was it Graves? ;)

  20. Oh carcillo, I’ll have to go back and look. Fug. Now I’ve quoted him wrong in 3 places!

  21. of course you did, Laurel! It’s ok…you were probably too busy making out with him in your mind and couldn’t really hear what he was saying LOL

  22. C3, I give you that LOL!!!

Man, that first video posted by Rotter made the hair on arms stand up and brought tears to my eyes. Love the bit where Mess grabs the water bottle from player next to him, while he’s drinking, and tosses it to Richter.

    Those were the days!

  23. BANJ, at first I thought the reporter made an error, than realized it was supposed to be “funny.” eh. As I used to say in my day, “I see what you’re trying to do, but it just doesn’t work.”

  24. hey faker, go ahead, have your fun. If you think anyone thinks you are me, you’re stupider than I thought. Idjit. Now we’ll just have to ban another ip address.

  25. Mama, if you had dusted off an old press pass, I would have been right there with you as your ‘intern’. ( :

  26. Julie, love ya, but you think I was going to bring anyone with me? I am not that generous!!! I bet it’s the best the female Albany press corp looked in a long time though :)

  27. OK, I gotta call the police now. Love Bobby, but hate the assen. Do you really not have anything else to do and realize I can find out where you’re posting from?

  28. who’s stopping posting?! You regulars can tell the diff between who’s real and who’s an asshat…..RR lives! So will the Nucks!

  33. Carp is getting RICH! Ca$hflow baby. Ca$hflow.

  34. CTBlueshirt – Wow…that long ago?

Manny – yeah man…hockey! Base-what? Who are the Pirates?

Sean Avery is in Albany “To support that Gay Marriage Thing.” Well, he is welcome to “Sloppy Seconds” on one of those “wedding nights,” as far as I’m concerned.

  36. I still think the answer is the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates. Bill Mazeraski. Yogi Berra watches the ball go over his head. Yogi is in Left Field. How’s that for Fantasy Baseball position eligibility? Yogi had Catcher AND Outfield eligibility.

  37. Boom Boom Bathgate on

One distinct memory I have re this date in 1994, is the waiting throughout the day for the game to be played. It seemed like five years from 9 a.m. until the first puck was dropped. Winning was great, but NOT LOSING was even greater.

  38. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Yankees outscored the Pirates by a 2-1 ratio (something like 54-27) in the 1960, World Series, but, of course Pittsburgh won it all in seven games. This raises the excellent question as to which system is better, match play (in golf that would be winning or losing each hole), or medal play, that is, one cumulative score for the entire competition. If Vancouver wins game seven by one goal, we could hear a lot of discussion about this. Boston has already “won” the medal play aspect of this finals series.

I don’t have a bias here, but just wondering if perhaps some combination of the two systems could be devised, and would work?

  39. This blog needs to come with a glossary. I can’t imagine newcomers having any luck understanding what is happening.

  40. Manny, that is so true !!!! When I have time tomorrow, I may do one. Anyone else? Could be grand! Meanwhile, no more wickys…..gotta run….mama love to all my (real) mates. TA!

    Afternoon ILB and all!!

Agree 100 percent ILB, absolute dirty hit. Far worse than rome’s (IMHO)! Nice erratic justice by the league right there.

    Manny?

  42. wick, lots of wickys by mama :)

I really gotta go…TA. Take care of good business my friends :)

  43. Wicky (Going with the 18" tires on this thing) on

Marchand and cally are indeed similar, but I think Marchand has more edge to his game!

  45. Is there any doubt that Thomas will win both the Vezina and Conn Smythe?

Will Roberto Luongo finally be regarded as an unreliable goalie, i.e. his true nature?

Is Henrik Sedin joking? ….0 pts in 6 SCF games….unacceptable

David Krejci = Best Czech player in the playoffs since Jaromir Jagr as a Ranger….

  46. In the 2011 edition of The Hockey News’ highly-respected Future Watch issue, Erixon was ranked as the 15th-best prospect playing outside of the NHL, and was No. 4 among defensemen. That makes him the highest-rated Rangers prospect since Marc Staal in 2007, and with fellow Blueshirts prospect Chris Kreider coming in at No. 18 on the list, the Blueshirts have two prospects in the Future Watch top-20 for the first time in a decade.

  47. Thanks, C3. From what I’ve read and heard, Erixon not making the team next year would be a surprise…can’t wait for camp!! Only a summer away!

You won’t believe this, but I swear it’s true. At tsn.ca they make reference to Derek Jeter’s hit streak being on hold, as he goes to the D.L. Derek Jeter currently has a TWO-GAME hitting streak!

  49. Boom Boom, they are referring to the fact that Jeter is 6 hits away from 3000 hits….

    orr
LOL, that’s it, keep it going!!

  51. I looked again at this Boychuk hit on Raymond. I have no idea what Boychuk was thinking. He had enough time to let go, and he knew Raymond had no way to protect himself. Very dirty play, regardless of the outcome.

  52. Last game of the season tomorrow. Thursday we will, most likely, say goodbye to our captain. That’s when the buyout period starts.

  53. I don’t know, ilb. Raymond was completely off balance, trying to avoid a check, and Boychuk rode him into the boards. I guess Boychuk could have held up but, he was finishing his check and it didn’t look intentional or dirty to me…Boychuk isn’t a dirty player…but he can be smarter, I guess…

Is that a boarding major? Not sure it is. I really think it’s a subjective call…

  54. carpwicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 4 LLPs!!) on

    ILB
this is what kills me about the whole thing, Rome, in the heat of the game delivers a clean hit a second late (literally a second) and gets 5 minute major game misconduct and a 4 GAME SUSPENSION…4 GAMES!!! And boychuk clearly does a dirty play after the play is moved on, at a clearly slower and deliberate pace…and nothing, NOTHING??

Everyone talks about cleaning up the game and yada yada, but seems to be ok with the way this has played out?? Seriously?

Seems like a joke when people gripe about the Rome hit and applaud his suspension, but have no problem with the boychuk hit and don’t think it is suspension worthy?

Very wrong message being sent by the league IMHO!

  55. carpwicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 4 LLPs!!) on

    ilb
    cally is getting bought out?

  56. I think he was finishing his check for too long…Surely had enough time to realize Raymond could not protect his back. No, it wasn’t boarding. Wasn’t a penalty either. That type of play is difficult to classify, except there should be some sense of respect for your opposing player in that situation, imo

  57. Rome’s hit is a complex situation, wicky. Except for it being late, it was within the rules. But what league is trying to avoid is those hits leading to a severe brain injury. And what they basically are saying is if Horton saw this hit, even for a split second, his injury wouldn’t be that severe. I’m sure they consulted with medical experts. It is a right conclusion. How do you suggest the league deals with that? It is pretty clear that it can not continue the way it’s been, or else the league will have too many head injuries that linger sometimes for a lifetime. Most of them to the skillful players.

  58. I agree that Boychuk needs to be smarter there…but on a play like that you have to be able to say, with certainty, that Boychuk was intentionally trying to hurt Raymond…otherwise it really isn’t a penalty…I think Raymond could have been a little more careful in that area of the ice….

Now, Rome’s hit was intentional. And, it was late. And, it was a brain injury. And, it was a borderline headshot…

  59. carpwicky(grating PIBG)© (Non visor wearing male, 26, holder of 4 LLPs!!) on

I guess my real problem with the situation is Rome absolutely got suspended IMHO for the praying mantis and the subsequent injury…if we are now suspending due to results then what is a dislocated shoulder worth? 2 periods? a broken ankle? 1 game? how much does the caps player get for cindy not returning for a season?

I just think it is BS that Rome got suspended for a LEGAL late hit (again by a second).

I understand that it is a brain injury (believe me I UNDERSTAND) and I get they are wanting to take some of the “defenceless player Injuries” out of the game. So how is Raymond in less defenceless? I would argue he is even more defenceless with less opportunity to protect himself than horton (horton could and should have had his head up). Raymond could do absolutely nothing with the position he was in and boychuk took absolute advantage of it and BROKE HIS BACK…

So brain injuries have way more precedent over broken backs or broken necks (pachioretty)? How does that work?

If Raymond has a brain injury instead of a broken back is boychuk suspended? Same hit. If Horton has a broken leg instead of a concussion with the same late hit is Rome suspended 4 games? Same hit. Total BS!!

You punish for hitting a defenceless player not depending on the injury or what grotesque position the hit player ends up in !

If there is any justice at all in the hockey world, the nucks win game 7!!

should have read “in less of a defenceless position”

  62. 17 years ago… I was in 8th grade.

Damn, that was a long time ago.

Well, those of us that wanted a game 7 got it. Going to be REAL interesting game to see which Luongo shows up.

  63. Wick, I see your points. I get it.

My point is that Rome’s intent was lay a fierce hit, and it looked like he targeted Horton’s head…at least, that’s the way I saw it…I don’t like that…

    http://tinyurl.com/4436gxd

I would have no problem with Boychuk getting suspended…

I just think if you suspend Rome, you have to suspend Boychuk. But, I am clearly mistaken or at least the NHL feels no need, so Go Nucks Go!!
