Game 4: Canucks morning skate

An interview with:

THE MODERATOR:  Questions for Coach Vigneault.

Q.  Some of the players talked about how bad the ice was this morning.  Do you expect it to be a factor?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  The ice is the same for both teams.  Throughout the season, teams play sometimes on real good ice and sometimes on ice that is not as good.
So I think it will get better, though, as the day goes on here.

Q.  The league said they were going to address all of the extracurricular between-whistle stuff with the teams.  Did you address it with your players or feel the need to?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Well, all year long we’ve played whistle to whistle.  That hasn’t changed in this series.  All the referees have to do is call the ones who initiate the scrums.  That’s going to stop right there.

Q.  You talked earlier about getting clarification on Tim Thomas’ play.  He initiated contact with Henrik Sedin.  That’s against the rules.  No call.  Have you got clarification on that?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  We asked the league.  Part of Thomas’ way of playing is playing out of the blue paint, initiating contact, roaming out there.  He seems to think that once he’s out, set, makes the save, that he can go directly back in his net without having anybody behind him.
Well, that’s wrong.  He’s got the wrong rule on that.  If we’re behind him, that’s our ice and we’re allowed to stay there.
We’ve talked to the NHL about that.  We’ve talked to the NHL about him initiating contact like did on Hank.  They’re aware of it.  Hopefully they’re going to handle it.

Q.  Because it’s so unfamiliar to see a goaltender body check a player.
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Does that go in the stats (smiling)?

Q.  Most of us weren’t even sure if it’s legal because surely you can’t body check him.  What explanation did the league give you on his ability to throw a hit like that?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I’m not going to give you the explanation.
I will tell you, everybody is aware of it, we talked to it prior to this series, about the way he plays.  We got clarification on what is allowable as far as him coming back in his net after he’s out five or ten feet past the blue paint.  Hopefully everything will get sorted out on the ice.

Q.  Your defensemen moved the puck very fluidly at Vancouver.  Boston wanted better puck management to get hits on your D in Game 3.  How do you feel like that part of the game went for you?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I think overall Boston obviously after the first period took advantage of a couple of our mistakes, a couple of situations: Alex Edler’s broken stick, Ryan Kesler putting the puck in the net.  Those are things that are going to happen in games.
For us, we’ve moved on past that game.  We’ve analyzed it.  We know some areas where we definitely need to be better, and I expect our team to be better in those areas tonight.

Q.  You said soft ice is the same for both teams.  Is there anything you would do to adjust to try to take away an edge?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Again, the ice is the same for both teams.  You just got to play with the ice surface.
I think it will get better tonight.  I think teams will be fine.

  1. That’s right, Carp! I can’t believe I forgot! Happy 26th, Carp! Don’t you usually celebrate it with mr. Titleist? Or drive upstate in the rain to cover some basketball game?

  2. That was a repost, btw! Carped twice in a row. Good thing it’s your birthday, not mine….

  3. We should probably do something to celebrate Carp’s 26th Birthday…any ideas ‘cabezas?

  4. ilb, thank you. met with Mr. T yesterday (along with Josh, 26) before work at a state baseball game. So it was a long, long day in the sun. More today. And, yes, celebrating birthday weekend upstate at state baseball/lacrosse/something.

Thanks, all. Orr, Haooy meant more to me than Happy.

Tony, that’s the best present ever: Three refreshes, all upper case!

Hope you guys have a party without me during the finals tonight.

  5. CTBlueshirt on

Happy 26th Carp. For your birthday, take it easy tonight and we’ll handle the blogging…oh wait.

  6. Hi Julie, I was in Albany for three hours the other day. Up and back for a lacrosse game. If I had more time, I was coming over for dinner.

    CTB, you’re the best.

  7. CTBlueshirt on

Where’s the state championship lax game this year? Any chance that Yorktown gets passed whatever powerhouse they’re playing from LI?

  8. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Ah, yes, the ice on a hot day in June. Well, the NHL USED to conclude its business in April. But TV would have us believe that more teams, more games, and of course, most of all, MORE COMMERCIALS, are really what we need. I rather liked six teams and done in April, and a 70-game regular season, and TWO, not four, playoff rounds. When things are simple, somehow they work. When the schedule is crammed, the number of teams is glutonous, and the games, themselves, take much longer to play because of constant interruptions in the flow of the game, well, somehow, something that was once a source of enjoyment is now more a source of frustration. Give me the “good ole days” when the biggest complexity was the horseless carriage horses pooping in the street.

  9. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Happy birthday, Carp! And many more to you and yours in good health and happiness.

  10. Noah-Rangers, 28 on

Happy birthday Carp! It’s a good thing you’re only 26…going to need that youthful energy come 7/1.

  11. Boom Boom Bathgate on

I wish I could go back to being 26, for the good reason that that was the age at which I allowed my all-time favorite female to slip out of my life when she changed jobs and left the NYC office where we were both employed. I located her in Florida, recently, and wrote to her, but no reply. Life, I guess, is about SEIZING opportunity, not casually letting it pass. Opportunity coming our way is a foreordained gift from the universe we should always respect and accept. And which we bypass at our peril.

  12. Boom Boom – I once let a girl slip out of my life. I didn’t pursue her hard enough. I didn’t talk to her for 4 years actually. Then I located her. Tried again. Then again. We got married last week. Good things happen. I promise.

  13. Awww, sorry I missed you Carp! We would have loved to have had you for dinner. I’ve been taking an online course for Information Technology. That’s why I haven’t been posting much these days. The course is keeping me busy.

  14. Hi ilb! I’ve been checking in from time to time. I just want to get this course done with. I have 6 more lessons to get through to get my certificate. Can’t wait!

  15. Thanks NYR! We had a civil ceremony on May 26th which was our 3 year anniversary. We are still having a celebration with our families on New Year’s Eve.

  16. Oh yeah! You mentioned that…now it’s coming back to me… I almost forgot!

Cool story about how you got back together with your wife after a long time apart…

  20. Thanks again, everybody.

CT, Yorktown plays Garden City in the state semifinal tonight at White Plains High (which is where I’m going right now), so we’ll see. None of our area teams has gotten past the Long Island teams in any of the semis of the three classifications since 2007.

  21. My wife is cooking a big carp (The Fish) in your honor. So, very Happy 26 to you and good appetite for me. (to be totally honest it is also our anniversary today). Numbers didn’t coincide, though. Hot dinner and toast for you granted.

  22. The Texas Rangers drafted a paralyzed kid. LOL! Looks like Slats is managing the wrong Rangers :P

By the way, the name of the director of amateur scouting for the Rangers is Kip Fagg. Just thought I’d mention that.

    I love funny names!

  23. Manny,

When are you coming out here?

  27. Greg, LOL and ILY!!!

    Go Nucks!

Anybody here see The Tree of Life? WTB? I had an audience of adults in an “arts film” theater leave laughing and scratching their heads.

  28. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " ALL HAIL CARP !!!"...says Greg L. on

    Ty Wicky .

aww when are the Rangers comming back….. I wanna see what happens next.

Does someone get the “C” off of Drury’s jersey?

Will our top pick in the draft play for us?

Who is Glen gonna get as our next “bruiser”?

Is starting out in europe gonna suck?

Are we gonna freeze to death come the Outdoor game?

    Does Mcgilrath make the team?

Is Stepan gonna be even better??

    Do we scoop up Richards?

    Is AA beefed up more?

Does the hobbit make the team?

Is this the year Hank rules the NHL?

    Is Gaborik done?

All these questions and much more are needed to be answered!!!! Tune in to find out ….I cant wait!!!!!!

  29. Wicky (Going with the 18" tires on this thing) on

Have you tried the hot pockets, they’re breathtaking?

  30. I think CCCP saw The Three of Life once…

    In order, Greg:
September, no, no, Koci, no, no, no, yes, no, no, yes, no, no.

  31. headrd earlier today richards enjoyed time in tampa has house there and tampa may be the only team he would take less to play for. tampa has to be pay stamkos and hedman down the line. wont be able to pay top dollar for ricahrds but he may take less and go back

  32. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Just win ,baby !!!"...says Greg L. on

wow LW , I completely disagree on all yours except Stepan being better …and maybe the draft pick not playing this year. Other then that Drury is stripped of his “C” , that big guy from Edm could be had as our goon. Starting out in Europe will suck and we’ll freeze come outdoor time. We’ll scoop up Richards and Macgilrath will make the team. The hobbit is out.( i love that little guy), AA puts on 15 lbs…Hank has his best year ( wins the vezina) and Gaborik is done(hurt again)

  33. i would like to se the nucks get more physical. it seems they get pushed around all over the ice.

paging sedins please answer the bell

  34. Waffleboarded is when you’re put on a board, and instead of pouring water down your throat through a cloth, they shove iHop waffles down your gullet instead, without syrup….

wtb does that mean in hockey!!!

  35. Laurel, do you think they shove the waffles through the cloth, or they remove the cloth first? Or should we ask Doc?

  36. “…they shove iHop waffles down your gullet instead”

In hockey, it means the Devils have called a timeout to give Brodeur a light snack.

  37. oy vey…’s early! the Nucks will Can-come back!

ilb, good question. How about we waffleboard Doc and see?

  39. you hear so much about the depth of vancouver besides the big 3 sedins and kesler where is there depth. higgins raymond torres i mean the bruins depth is much better.

the nucks were outplayed by sharks most of the series the bruins have carried most of the play except for 2 3rd per in vancouver.

i look at this nucks team and i ask how in hell did they have 117 pts.

chara-neutralizing sedins keith/seabrook weber/suter all shut down sedins they got loose vs sharks because of no shutdown pair

    bergeron-shutting down kesler

all reasons why at start of series i liked boston.

  40. ilb

help me out i cant understand how the nucks were able to win so much. they have no 3rd and 4th lines that do anything

  41. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Blame Sather for no more Cups in NY. He can hardly get a team TO the playoffs, let alone play for the Cup.

  42. Got it, Wicky.

Eric- good question, but I believe we are about to find out. Or at least I hope so. They have an ability to take it up a notch.

  43. The Heterodox Economist on

… and the NHL is once again at it with rampant revisionism, who can keep track of all these rules at this rate?

I’m so glad that this blog from the good ‘ol USA doesn’t practice active censorship. I politely and sincerely expressed my frustration with the inconsistency of NHL rulings on and not one comment was accepted. Is TSN owned by the NHL or something? Otherwise, what’s with the intolerance of criticizing anything related to the NHL? I’m willing to overlook the nebulous way TSN edits game highlights but drowning out the voice of fans seems like a self-inflicted wound that will eventually morph into something bigger.

PS I know it’s early but who do the Rangers replace Boogey with in the new season? I’m really hopeful for a rugged defenseman who isn’t afraid to drop the gloves and can clear the crease.

  44. JimboWoodside on

Happy 26 (again), Carp!! – I’ve got another happy 26 coming up on free-agent day. I hope Uncle Glennie gets me some good “presents”…that can score!

  45. They “knifed down the puck”, according to Doc. What a bunch of gang bangers…

  46. No matter what happens, the most exciting series of the playoffs IMO was the Detroit-San Jose one. Without a doubt.

  50. Doodie Machetto on

Latona, I thought that series was actually kinda boring. Detroit just was trying to piece a lineup together. Datsyuk was amazing, but otherwise, Detroit wasn’t really bringing too much to the table.

I thought the two most exciting series were San Jose-LA and Vancouver-Chicago.

  51. 2011 Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins on

Rangers are no match for 2011 Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins. Henrick Lundquist only good Ranger, though he choke

  52. I doubt it’s censorship. Anyone who can use and spell “nebulous” is probably far too literate to qualify as a user of the TSN message boards.

  53. nobody on this board gives a damn about the “we”…get it? Go to ‘Nucks board and “we” over there you loser. When was the last time “we” want the cup? 40 years ago? i thought so…

  54. Doodie Machetto on

    Lapierre, Hansen, Malhotra.

As I said in my review of game 1, Hansen was far and away the best skater on either team, with Lapierre 2nd by another large margin as well.

  55. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Vancouver-Chicago was exciting, until the very last second… :(

  56. Detroit not bringing much to the table still resulted in seven games, two overtime games, and essentially seven one goal games (Game 6 was 3-1 with an EN). Watching Detroit in the third periods of games four, five, and six, especially, was amazing.

Vancouver-Chicago was exciting, too. But I didn’t care much for the LA series.

  76. eric

I still think they’re one of the better teams in the West and they did beat some very good teams to get here. But their points total is definitely not an accurate translation of their on-ice play. I’d say more like 105? That would be fairer.

However, I picked Vancouver to be in the finals in August. So, I’m not gonna complain.

  77. Slatsko Folkyerself on

I’ve been on the Not Vancouver bandwagon, I don’t want the team that beat my Black Hawks in OT in game 7 to win the Cup.

the reason why i am so voicestrous tonite is the freaking media has this nucks team on pedastal as a huge favorite like they are unbeatable where no one is picking against them and i just dont see it.

The Sharks lost that series in five games. That is solely down to a few bad PPs and a late goal?

  118. Oh..and btw…..for you book readers out there.

I have another one for you history buffs this one a marvelously researched book by James D Hornfischer entitled Neptunes Inferno.

I know that much has always been made of the Marines and their great battle against the Japanese taking the absolutely necessary island of Guadalcanal. It was so epic to the Marines that the 1st Marine Division’s shoulder insignia has the word
Guadalcanal down the center of the number one.

Their ordeal was very well captured in the miniseries called “the Pacific”; They did suffer great losses. But it has also been commonly believed that the Navy pulled out and left the Marines to their fate, with no ammo or food. This book tells the true story of what happened, and the unbelievable losses and sacrifices that the Navy suffered during that hectic battle. Sailors and officers had many more losses and under fantastic conditions than has ever been published before. The five Sullivan brothers who went down aboard the Cruiser Juneau were just a single incident in the situation. It’s a long book, but very very gripping. I tell you once you start reading it you can’t put it down.
