COACH VIGNEAULT
THE MODERATOR: Questions for Coach Vigneault.
Q. Some of the players talked about how bad the ice was this morning. Do you expect it to be a factor?
COACH VIGNEAULT: The ice is the same for both teams. Throughout the season, teams play sometimes on real good ice and sometimes on ice that is not as good.
So I think it will get better, though, as the day goes on here.
Q. The league said they were going to address all of the extracurricular between-whistle stuff with the teams. Did you address it with your players or feel the need to?
COACH VIGNEAULT: Well, all year long we’ve played whistle to whistle. That hasn’t changed in this series. All the referees have to do is call the ones who initiate the scrums. That’s going to stop right there.
Q. You talked earlier about getting clarification on Tim Thomas’ play. He initiated contact with Henrik Sedin. That’s against the rules. No call. Have you got clarification on that?
COACH VIGNEAULT: We asked the league. Part of Thomas’ way of playing is playing out of the blue paint, initiating contact, roaming out there. He seems to think that once he’s out, set, makes the save, that he can go directly back in his net without having anybody behind him.
Well, that’s wrong. He’s got the wrong rule on that. If we’re behind him, that’s our ice and we’re allowed to stay there.
We’ve talked to the NHL about that. We’ve talked to the NHL about him initiating contact like did on Hank. They’re aware of it. Hopefully they’re going to handle it.
Q. Because it’s so unfamiliar to see a goaltender body check a player.
COACH VIGNEAULT: Does that go in the stats (smiling)?
Q. Most of us weren’t even sure if it’s legal because surely you can’t body check him. What explanation did the league give you on his ability to throw a hit like that?
COACH VIGNEAULT: I’m not going to give you the explanation.
I will tell you, everybody is aware of it, we talked to it prior to this series, about the way he plays. We got clarification on what is allowable as far as him coming back in his net after he’s out five or ten feet past the blue paint. Hopefully everything will get sorted out on the ice.
Q. Your defensemen moved the puck very fluidly at Vancouver. Boston wanted better puck management to get hits on your D in Game 3. How do you feel like that part of the game went for you?
COACH VIGNEAULT: I think overall Boston obviously after the first period took advantage of a couple of our mistakes, a couple of situations: Alex Edler’s broken stick, Ryan Kesler putting the puck in the net. Those are things that are going to happen in games.
For us, we’ve moved on past that game. We’ve analyzed it. We know some areas where we definitely need to be better, and I expect our team to be better in those areas tonight.
Q. You said soft ice is the same for both teams. Is there anything you would do to adjust to try to take away an edge?
COACH VIGNEAULT: Again, the ice is the same for both teams. You just got to play with the ice surface.
I think it will get better tonight. I think teams will be fine.

Where’s the state championship lax game this year? Any chance that Yorktown gets passed whatever powerhouse they’re playing from LI?
Ah, yes, the ice on a hot day in June. Well, the NHL USED to conclude its business in April. But TV would have us believe that more teams, more games, and of course, most of all, MORE COMMERCIALS, are really what we need. I rather liked six teams and done in April, and a 70-game regular season, and TWO, not four, playoff rounds. When things are simple, somehow they work. When the schedule is crammed, the number of teams is glutonous, and the games, themselves, take much longer to play because of constant interruptions in the flow of the game, well, somehow, something that was once a source of enjoyment is now more a source of frustration. Give me the “good ole days” when the biggest complexity was the horseless carriage horses pooping in the street.

I wish I could go back to being 26, for the good reason that that was the age at which I allowed my all-time favorite female to slip out of my life when she changed jobs and left the NYC office where we were both employed. I located her in Florida, recently, and wrote to her, but no reply. Life, I guess, is about SEIZING opportunity, not casually letting it pass. Opportunity coming our way is a foreordained gift from the universe we should always respect and accept. And which we bypass at our peril.

I’m so glad that this blog from the good ‘ol USA doesn’t practice active censorship. I politely and sincerely expressed my frustration with the inconsistency of NHL rulings on TSN.ca and not one comment was accepted. Is TSN owned by the NHL or something? Otherwise, what’s with the intolerance of criticizing anything related to the NHL? I’m willing to overlook the nebulous way TSN edits game highlights but drowning out the voice of fans seems like a self-inflicted wound that will eventually morph into something bigger.
PS I know it’s early but who do the Rangers replace Boogey with in the new season? I’m really hopeful for a rugged defenseman who isn’t afraid to drop the gloves and can clear the crease.

As I said in my review of game 1, Hansen was far and away the best skater on either team, with Lapierre 2nd by another large margin as well.
Vancouver-Chicago was exciting, until the very last second… :(

Detroit not bringing much to the table still resulted in seven games, two overtime games, and essentially seven one goal games (Game 6 was 3-1 with an EN). Watching Detroit in the third periods of games four, five, and six, especially, was amazing.
Vancouver-Chicago was exciting, too. But I didn’t care much for the LA series.

I still think they’re one of the better teams in the West and they did beat some very good teams to get here. But their points total is definitely not an accurate translation of their on-ice play. I’d say more like 105? That would be fairer.

I have another one for you history buffs this one a marvelously researched book by James D Hornfischer entitled Neptunes Inferno.
I know that much has always been made of the Marines and their great battle against the Japanese taking the absolutely necessary island of Guadalcanal. It was so epic to the Marines that the 1st Marine Division’s shoulder insignia has the word
Guadalcanal down the center of the number one.
Their ordeal was very well captured in the miniseries called “the Pacific”; They did suffer great losses. But it has also been commonly believed that the Navy pulled out and left the Marines to their fate, with no ammo or food. This book tells the true story of what happened, and the unbelievable losses and sacrifices that the Navy suffered during that hectic battle. Sailors and officers had many more losses and under fantastic conditions than has ever been published before. The five Sullivan brothers who went down aboard the Cruiser Juneau were just a single incident in the situation. It’s a long book, but very very gripping. I tell you once you start reading it you can’t put it down.
