Rangers trade Horak, two 2nds to Calgary for Erixon and a 5th

From the Rangers:

New York sends forward Roman Horak & two second round draft picks to Calgary

New York, June 1, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Tim Erixon and a fifth round draft pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft from Calgary in exchange for forward Roman Horak and two second round draft picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.  The Rangers also announced today that the club has signed Erixon to an entry level deal.

“Tim is an outstanding young defenseman with good size and mobility,” stated Sather.  “He plays a complete, all-around game, and we feel he is an excellent addition to our developing, young defense corps.”

Erixon, 20, skated in 48 games with Skelleftea of the Swedish Elite League (SEL) this season, registering five goals and 19 assists for 24 points, along with 40 penalty minutes.  He established career-highs in games played, assists and points while skating in his third full season in Sweden’s top league.  Erixon tied for fifth on the team in assists and eighth in points, and ranked fifth on the club in penalty minutes.  He also tallied three goals and five assists in 18 playoff contests with Skelleftea.  Erixon tied for fifth on the team in playoff goals and assists, and sixth in points while establishing playoff career-highs in games played, goals, assists, points, and penalty minutes (12).

The 6-3, 205-pounder has skated in 140 career SEL contests with Skelleftea, registering 14 goals and 30 assists for 44 points, along with 96 penalty minutes.  Erixon established a career-high with seven goals while appearing in 45 games during the 2009-10 season.  He made his SEL debut as a 17 year old, skating in two games with Skelleftea in 2007-08.  In addition, Erixon has appeared in 39 career playoff games, registering four goals and five assists for nine points, along with 24 penalty minutes.

Internationally, Erixon captured a silver medal with Team Sweden at the 2011 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia, registering one assist and a plus-two rating in nine games.  He also represented Sweden at the 2009 and 2010 World Junior Championships, winning the silver medal in 2009 and the bronze medal in 2010.

Erixon was originally selected by Calgary as their first round choice, 23rd overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.  Born in Port Chester, New York, he is the son of former Blueshirts forward, Jan Erixon, who played his entire 10-year NHL career with the Rangers from 1983-84 to 1992-93.  Jan Erixon, who was selected by the Rangers in the second round (30th overall) in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft, registered 57 goals and 159 assists for 216 points, along with 167 penalty minutes in 556 career games.  He is a two-time winner of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, including as the inaugural winner in 1987-88 and again in 1990-91.

Horak, 19, skated in 64 games with the Chilliwack Bruins of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this season, registering 26 goals and 52 assists for 78 points, along with 60 penalty minutes.  He was originally the Rangers fifth round choice, 127th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

  1. great move for the Rangers. a mid level prospect and two 2nd rounders (in a supposed weak draft) for a top defensive prospect is excellent.

I wonder if this makes Del Zotto expendable in a deal for a top line center??

  2. The only Canuck to have a cup is Samuelsson(another former Ranger BTW).

The Bruins have Recchi(Pittsburgh ’91, Carolina ’06) and Shawn Thornton(Anaheim ’07) as their cup winners. They also have finalists with Ferrence(’04 Flames) and Kelly(Ottawa ’07).

  3. “So how many current Canucks and current Bruins have ever won a Stanley Cup?”

    Recchi – Carolina 2006, Pittsburgh 1991
    Samuelsson – Detroit 2008

I think that’s it. Might have missed somebody.

  4. i think Erixon will get a fair chance to make the team but probably plays the first few months in HFD just like McDonagh did.

Although who knows maybe they trade Del Zotto in an attempt to bring in a top line center…

  5. paul g in sunrise on

don’t forget about Pashnin who they loved last year was bound to KHL – that contract over, and he might play here (AHL/NHL) – lots of talent and options – go get some goals now…

  6. Yay! I love the idea of having son of Janny on the team!!!! I sat next to Dad once at a Rangers fan club dinner my brother took me to. Awesome night!

  7. leetchhalloffame on

Another d-man? Who’s going to put the puck in the net? Come on Slats.

  8. Mrs. Eminger on

Jan Erixon : an unsung Ranger great. Hopefully the kid has got the same work ethic.

Curious…is it a complete coincidence that he ends up here? I always wish I knew “who-knows-who” and how these discussions come about and how this all goes down. The kid’s gotta be pretty damn happy to be coming home with a chance to play here.

  9. CapeBretonRangerFan on

Tornadoes up near Boston…sounds like disaster is on the horizon for Boston (Bruins).

  10. Czechthemout!!! on

Great trade by Sather! We are now most likely assured(assuming no trade) of two first round picks. This kid is a heck of a player. Watched him in the WJC two years ago and he was real good! One of the best on the Sweeds. And he does have an offensive game and a good shot.

He is also the Flames best prospect who basically forced this trade to NYC because he is from here and wanted badly to play here just like his father.

I think he will get a good chance to make the team out of camp and I would not at all be surprised if Torts goes with him and MDZ as the third pair. Torts likes to roll the dice and he rolled a big time seven with MCD and Sauer.

  11. bull dog line on

Erixon is a stay at home Dman, who can chip in some O. there should be no hype about what he may become. solid and steady is what he projects to be.

  12. from what I read, Erixon is not a stay at home d-man at all, in fact he is a defensively responsible PP QB…

  13. Slats deserves credit for this move…Low risk, high reward…

Erixon should be able to step in and compete for a spot right away…I think he is probably more offensive than any of our d-men, aside from Del Zotto, but he is a 2-way d-man, not just a stay-at-home type….

Gilroy and/or Girardi can now be moved for an offensive upgrade…if the Rangers choose to go that route….

  14. bull dog line on

    first from his draft year.
“He has some solid skill, one scout said,” he doesn’t look like a high end guy offensively. He is not a dynamic player, but he’s a really safe defenseman and just a steady guy.
    now from future watch.
already in his third season of Sweden’s top league and posting his best offensive season. however, the son of Jan isn’t going to make his mark on that side of the scoresheet. anyone who watched him at the world juniors can see what he provides, a steady game at both ends of the ice.
both of these from the Hockey News.

  15. im here puckheads.

lets go nucks however i think bruins win in 6. pressure will get to nucks.

there is a better chance of a 1st rounder panning out then 2nd rounders. time will tell on the erixon deal

  16. Bruins have no chance at winning the series since they don’t have a dynamic offensive player but good for them for making it this far.

  17. Craig Button, the former nhl GM, who works for NHL Network, just said that the trade was “a heist by Glen Sather” and that he expects that Erixon will be in the Rangers opening day lineup.

  18. Calgary’s GM Jay Feaster thinks Erixon is NHL ready.

“Horak’s not necessarily ready to play today and we thought Tim was. That’s just the reality of the situation. But again, we’re able to get a guy who believe will play for us in Calgary at some point.”

  19. I don’t know if it was mentioned, but it was nice to see Brooks call out Luongo in the Post today…

“When Canada won Olympic gold last year, Luongo seemed merely along for the ride after supplanting Martin Brodeur; the beneficiary of playing behind a powerhouse squad. If Canada didn’t win in spite of Luongo, well, it sure didn’t win because of the goaltender. He was to Canada as Chris Osgood was to the 1998 Cup champion Red Wings.”

    I totally agree!!

  20. “lets go nucks however i think bruins win in 6.”

LOL! if this isn’t a bipolar comment i don’t know what is, then! :)

  21. cccp

what u want me to say i am rooting for canucks but think bruins will shock the nhl. no one thinks they have a chance.

  22. i don’t think Boston can win this particular series w/o clicking PP or /and Tim Thomas standing on his head… ‘Nucks will bring their best every night…

  23. From what I read, the Flames had until the end of June to sign Erixon or he would go back into the draft this year. With the Rangers in the driver’s seat leverage wise, why did they have to give up both 2nd round picks? I don’t know anything about Horak except from what I have read, but I hate giving up draft picks for a team that needs offense so bad.
They’ve said it’s a weak draft, but it will probably surprise. When are the experts right anyway:)

  24. NYR_FAN

I’m not the biggest Luongo fan either, but a touch selective with Brooks’ quotes there, given he also said “…elite goaltending in Vancouver provided by Roberto Luongo following his opening-round benching against the Blackhawks…” and “Vancouver may have won the Western finals over San Jose because of Luongo…”

  25. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Slats keeps unloading young scorers – the team’s primary need to move forward – first Werek, now Horak. Why do we need 10 potential all-stars on D, to go with an empty cupboard up front? How about some damn BALANCE on our roster, not just more one-dimensional myopia?

  26. CTBlueshirt on

I don’t agree with Chara in front of the net, you’re taking away his shot.

  27. Slatsko Folkyerself on

I used to dream that the Rangers would put a big guy (or anybody for that matter) in front of the goalie during the PP.

  28. There’s so little room between the benches, that Pang is nestled snugly between Glenn Healy’s butt cheeks.

  29. Doodie Machetto on

So, ‘m doing the game 1 recap, and I don’t want to spend any of my time talking about NBC, but what the Buff does the Green Lantern have to do with hockey? It’s gonna be a long 10 years.

  30. LW, you are correct. The article wasn’t a total rip of Luongo but his performance at the Olympics was less than stellar and it was a noteworthy point….

Wait, we got Palazzo too!? Another Italian? Jeez…. ;)

  31. Thankfully, the network here switched to CBC after showing the first 10 minutes of the NBC coverage. Only long enough to see Keith Jones had a yellow face and for Milbury to say something I completely ignored.

  32. JimboWoodside on

“Another Europansy, Jimbo! Can’t get away from ‘em!!”

Shocking, CP3! Uncle Glennie has gone “Euro” on us!

  33. Slatsko Folkyerself on

So if Erixon is NHL ready now, why did Stogypuss draft Krieder 4 picks earlier instead?

  34. Doodie Machetto on

It was their first PP which had a lot of shots, but no real chances.

  35. Doodie Machetto on

I have my first definite topic of discussion: how much I dislike the Boston PP. Although, if it starts scoring goals, I will mention that I had written how much I hated it and they proved me wrong.

  36. Olga Folkyerself on

They are calling the high sticks by Vancouver they missed in the San Jose series.

  37. Not the smartest move by Burrows there.

    Boston looks overmatched.

    Uh, hey gang!

  38. haha.

    a. I heard it didn’t work
    b. I think we are all friends now, no? I just have to wait to get in on this Boneheads group I heard about.

  39. thanks CT

i’m listening to the broadcasters going on
about it being a good hip check
and i was thinking the same thing — that it was late.

if bruins lose this series they could look at their horrible
power play. wow!!! i thought we had problems!

  40. Manny, a) it did, eventually……so go back. Your page just wasn’t kosher for a while :)

    b) get in touch with Sally

  41. a. I friended Sally and included a message
    b. I heard she has a busy life; and
    c. glad we are friends now!

  42. a and b. cool, and yes she does, so you’re good just be patient
    c. me too piano!

  43. I was at the game when Burrows gave Stahl a shot to the groin…he’s definitely a dirty player!!!

  44. Boneheads?

Pretty underwhelming for a Game One..

Carp, if you need me to, I should be able to do a recap.

  45. Ha! Manny has his link up again! Mickey, I sent you msg with info…..oy, I am exhausted….

  46. Latona, I think Carp is set for recaps for Game 1 and 2….e-mail him at rcarpini@lohud.com for info on other games. Or for tonight…..who am I to say :) I would love to hear your thoughts, plus lunch menu

  47. Blogmama
are you talking about the fb
page new New York Rangers fan club
    or something else?

thought i saw you on there in past
not sure which won everyone is talking about today.

  48. I think it’s my fault. I rejoined facebook the other day and decided to join some Rangers bonanzas on there and force you people to be my FB friends. MY bad.

  49. I’ve not been around as much lately… I miss you guys!

Oddly enough, the abject insanity brings me inner peace.. freaky..

  50. Manny,

If you want to do your own recap, that’s perfectly cool. I don’t necessarily want to do one, but I just want to make sure one gets up for every game. However, if you want, I would be glad to aid you with your recap. We do make an excellent team.

  51. This is what I was thinking. We make a great team….so maybe Game 3 could be a combination of 5 points each or something…..we could work on that via e-mail. Surprise everybody with an unreal review.

  52. jpg, yes, I am part of New York Rangers fan club on FB, as I know you are, but there is another FB Rangers group that Sally and Linda started, I thought you were part of too? It’s kind of faded though, sadly….Girls!

  53. Nice Mickey!

Although I am not a girl I will help bring that FB group back. I have never ending energy as long as the activities don’t involve running.

  54. Well after the development and patent of the ever-so-popular lunch contest….people tend to Fear Me and Latona when we are combined. We are just TOO powerful!

  55. Mama,

Right back atcha. Although you should fear myself and Manny together.. the last time we combined our efforts, we came up with a lunch contest. Horrifying!

  56. Yea we are pretty harmless. We are kind of like the fun police….but the type of police that force you to have fun.

  57. That’s virtually impossible with Sally in the running. Unattainable goals, boo-yah!

Speaking of unattainable goals, that phrase holds true for both the finalists so far.

  58. My cat was hanging out with a gopher today.. they were just chilling in my garden.

  59. My genderless username does not do me justice. I am of the male variety, mama. But it’s all good.

    Someone score, please!

  60. We know you’re a MAN Latona. The only gender confusion around here for me occurred with Tiki. He got pretty mad about it too.

  61. Gotta say I’m surprised its still scoreless.

No boys allowed in the all girls Rangers FB group ;)

  62. I always tried to be nice to him too. Although, I am mostly honest, and I would tell him if I thought he needed to calm down.

  63. But but but but….CCCP told me about it! I was a Women’s Studies major? Does that count? Can my Wife join? She’s a woman….then I can use her profile to infiltrate!

  64. Latona: Totally. Tiki always needs to calm down. That’s a fact. But I did try to be nice and I notice that you were pretty nice also…..it never worked. Then he was in a terrible accident and came back and then left again. I hope he’s OK.

  65. Manny, in order to gain entrance, you have to dress in drag and do the hula. Then, while still in drag, sing “Feel like a Natural Woman’. And then we have to critique your perfomances and maybe, just maybe you will be allowed in.

  66. this may be the lowest scoring finals ever.

5 on 5 the bruins can play with the canucks. very rarely if ever u see nucks pp go 0 for 6

  67. Yea tough break Doodie. You could talk about so many things. Penalties, Doc Emrick’s inability to shut up, the fans being silent, hockey returning to Manitoba? Creamcicles? Heat Wave?

  68. Doodie’s comments will include at least reference to how hard it was to stay awake, lol.

  69. Before I go……I just checked the weather and “deadly tornado in Mass???” What is going on!? Is this the rapture?

    Bye Mama!

  70. Later, Manny.

And I agree Mickey. Maybe even two, in case he forgot the first time due to drowsiness.

  71. Damn tornadoes! Go away!

At the rate this game is going, Carp might be able to catch some of it after all.

  72. I’m gonna boudreau, but this may be one one of the best SC finals ever…boudreau!!

  73. LMAO!!!

I was typing to Doodie just now that he should worry Nucks will score before this period is over!!

  74. Wow. Now you have something to write about Doodie!

Raffi Torres is from Canada. Father emigrated from Mexico. Mother came from Peru but is of Serbian, italian and greek ancestry. Yet he is a red-head.

  75. One of my fav sing-along songs ever, Mama. And I wasn’t even close to being born when it came out.

  76. that would be kind of humorous
    led by twin Euro pansies
    and a possible conn smythe
winner who is from the U.S.

  77. Micky, a classic is a classic :)

manny, ilb knows all about leashes, and bands :)

  78. Doodie Machetto on

Kesler was invisible for 59 minutes, 30 seconds. Yes, he deserves the Conn Smythe!

  79. C3, sent you FB message. I’ll check your answer tomorrow :)

All, oh my, this is going to be a series…..til tomorrow, TA!

  80. Nite Laton! Niters all! C3, mama love….please send me info at my e-mail that you have, I assume…TA!

  81. With Erixon, I’m all for getting rid of Girardi. Who cares that he blocks shots, he sucks and greatly reaps the rewards of having Staal as his D partner.

  82. Manny

Serbs come in all colors, and you’d be surprised at the number of blonds and redheads in Italy. Greece…dunno. Never saw one not a brunette.

Someone mentioned that we “need” Richards. And then what?
the same type of timid skating and playing style as we’ve been subject to since Renneyhockey? Now and then a shot on goal
( usually wide of the net), and eternal passing til intercepted?

Nah. I’d rather be in Disneyworld, ( And if you knew how much I despise D World, ……………………….)

  83. Now we’re in the middle of the lost months, when no hockey but guess ork is going on among the faithful. All kinds of arcane info is bandied about and here’s the first:

How many of you folks know that Mary Matalin ( who’s she?)
is of Croatian descent? And if you guess that one…who’s her husband?
