Happy Memorial Day!

62

Enjoy your cookouts or your parade or whatever you decide to do today (hope you’re not working, though I know a lot of people who are).

Have fun, kick back.

But please don’t forget why we celebrate Memorial Day.

Most sources of information say that Memorial Day began in the 1860s after the Civil War and the hundreds of thousands from both sides who died fighting. There are some who believe it began earlier than that.

And when I was a kid we were also taught that it was a day to remember anybody who has passed on, not just those who were lost while serving in wars.

Whatever the complete truth is, there’s nothing wrong with remembering those who were important to our lives, or to our country. Give it some thought. I know I will try to do that before I flip something on the grill.

  1. According to ten Crosby is getting checked out by a doctor this week to see if he can start his off ice work out regimen. Is he done? I mean he will come back and play but what will he look like out there and just how long until he gets concussed again? I mean I loathe the guy as anyone who is a ranger adversary, but I am getting the impression this guy will never be the same. It’s a shame.

i hope crosby is ok in life. hate to see anyone have problems however if he never plays again i wont lose sleep.

  3. Guys, I have it on good authority that Crosby’s been symptom-free for awhile. Long enough that he probably could have played in the playoffs. But there are greater things at work than Crosby’s headaches and willingness to play.

He is huge money in this sport for both the Pens and the NHL. And by huge, I mean he’s worth billions. Not millions, billions. That’s not even taking into consideration the ambassador aspect he plays. You ask young kids getting into the sport who their favorite player is and nine out of ten times it’s Crosby.

The day he started having concussion symptoms, even slight ones, the league had a very vicious flashback to the Lindros days. The league thought it had ‘the Next One’ in Lindros, but he played on a team that didn’t give a toss about his health. We all know how that ended. Now they’re having images of the same thing happening to Crosby.

At the very least, someone from the NHL put a call to the Pens to make sure they were going to pull the plug on Crosby until next season, regardless of his recovery rate. Not playing for a solid eight months gives him the best chance of recovery. I think part of the problem with the NHL is that guys like Savard are allowed to come back from a major injury so quickly.

Still, pulling the plug on Crosby also opens him up for a lot of criticism. How would it sound if Crosby’s working out like normal while his team is going down in the playoffs? Not good, which is why they’re cooking up this BS about him still suffering symptoms.

Mind you, this is a guy who didn’t even lose consciousness either of the times he supposedly suffered a concussion. Crosby’s fine and he’ll be back as good as ever next fall. But until then, the Pens and the NHL are going to do everything in their power to protect their golden child.

If Crosby slipped in the shower and injured his noodle, I wouldn’t lose any sleep….. Tho the best scenario is if Cooke nailed with an elbow in practice.

Has anyone, and I’m looking in Tiki’s direction, mentioned what bull Carcillo it was that Horton wasn’t suspended for the water fight with the fan, them scored the only goal in game 7 to eliminate the Lightnings?

  6. Happy Memorial Day, boys and girls!

LOL! Doodie, Stan Fishler actually made that point on Twitter immediately after Horton scored the game 7 goal.

“I cannot believe that the Bruins are in the Stanley Cup Final with a power play clicking at about eight percent efficiency. They have scored only five power play goals in the entire playoffs thus far. By contrast, the Canucks have 17 power play goals.” -Fatty McKenzie, TSN

I really don’t think Boston can win this series unless the power play starts working…

I don’t think I could root for either team. Although, I would like to see Manny Malholtra and Christopher Higgins raise the Cup…

  7. Happy Memorial Day, folks!

Let’s hope there will be no more wars so we don’t have to keep updating our list.

  8. thanks Carp!!
    for mentioning about Memorial Day
for those in the Armed Forces
as well as anyone you know who has passed
    away

maybe because my dad and uncles downplayed
their service i’ve always known the holiday more
for the all-encompassing honor of all those who passed.

either way, i celebrate them all.

i’m struck by this line in your comment on cindy:

“That?s not even taking into consideration the ambassador aspect he plays. ”

    huh!?!?!?
how is he an “ambassador” other than the fact that the nhl and much of the nhl media
push him to the forefront constantly.
    in fact
a lot of what he’s done — from the snot handshake in Cup finals to skipping the handshake on nye game to whining — makes him a non-ambassador.
    gotta go
    back to work for me.

  10. Well, Higgins is a local kid, so it would be cool for him to bring the Cup to NY.

Plus, if it wasn’t for Higgins, we may not have The Prust!!

  11. That’s true. It’s hard to dislike him and Blowmez, since they really did help us out!

The Crosby snot-shake was classless, but not shaking hands at the Winter Classic, meh, I have no problem with that. It’s a regular season game. Why should they shake hands? Just because they’re outside? Doesn’t make sense.

Ladies and Gentleman including the guy who is responsible for this blog..Here is the official explanation about the Memorial Day in the United States of America…!!!

Memorial Day 2011 is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end.

Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on Memorial Day.

Memorial Day 2011 is on 30th May in 2011.

Please guys give me a big hand for my entry !!!!:)

Shaking hands following the Winter Classic CHEAPENS the meaning of shaking hands at the end of a Stanley Cup playoffs round or finals. Leave it to TV to orchestrate this garbage on behalf of some advertiser. After all, TV wants players on championship teams to wear “one size fits all” garage sale-looking caps with the price tag dangling loose. Hey, if it’s “cool” to the 13-year olds, that is the bottom line, right networks?

What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day besides Memorial Day is for the deceased who served, and Veteran’s Day is for the living who served? Seems to me these two holidays would have more meaning if they were combined as one commemorative holiday for all who served and are currently serving.

  18. Memorial Day is for those who served but died while serving

Veteran’s Day is for those who served and still alive

    no?

I think LeClair was retired long before Skid came into the league, but I could be mistaken….

  20. NHLN just showed best saves and goals of the playoffs so far…

Not a single save by Lundqvist and not a single goal by Rangers was shown.

Instead, they showed exhange between Torts and Brooksie when Torts told Brooksie that Brooksie always trying to corner Torts with words.

    sigh…

  21. I may be wrong, but i think the snot-shake was at the end of the Olympics, and when he won the Cup he didn’t shake Lidstrom’s hand because he was too busy celebrating.

Superfluous holidays ( and no politician would dare touch this):

    1. MLK Day
    2. Either Memorial Day OR Veteran’s Day.
    3. Labor Day (Originated as a kick-back to Atlantic City prolonging summer by one week.)
    4. Columbus Day. (The man who “discovered” the Blue Jackets had more to do with discovering America than did that Italian itinerant mercenary.)
    5. National Book Club Day
    6. Secretaries Day
    7. National Teleflora (We deliver) Day.
    8. President’s Day (A “Lousy President’s Day” would be more appropriate.)
    9. Christmas Day (Should be changed to the non-sectarian “Network TV Football Day”, or “Lionel Trains/ Kids Day.”

Some holidays which should be added”

    1. Gary Bettman Day (Greatness comes in little packages.)
    2. Dave Schultz Day (Could have taken Normandy Beach by himself.)
    3. Eddie Shack Day or “National Railroad Day”
    4. Territorial Draft Day (Can we just get back to the old system so Montreal can win 50 Cups?)
    5. Glen Sather / Fidel Castro “A Smoke Is More Than Just A Smoke – It’s A Cigar” Day.
    6. Cindy Crosby Has Prettier Lips Than Britney Spears Day.

Well, you get the silly idea.

  28. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Of course I forgot: “National One Fifteen-Minute Call Could Save You Money Day.” Now there’s one we already have mulitiple times, every day of the year, ad nauseam. The problem with my life is that I need to hear that at least two million more times ( which I surely will in the next two weeks) to make up my mind and pick up the phone.

  29. Boom Boom, you forgot the most important one of all

National Coming-out Day or “Leave your closet alone day”

  30. I don’t know if Voros can dump the puck as effective as Drury can, but I’d take Voros over Drury any day! At least Voros brings entertainment value

  31. jpg – what I meant by ‘ambassador’ is that Crosby’s name is internationally recognized. Even fair weather fans know it. I didn’t mean anything about his character, since I tend to side with the contingent of fans that think he’s a spoiled brat.
