STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY OF DEREK BOOGAARD
New York, May 20, 2011 – The family of Derek Boogaard issued the following statement today through the National Hockey League Players’ Association:
“We would like to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love and support for our family during this difficult period as we grieve the loss of Derek – our son and brother. We are deeply saddened by this unimaginable loss, but we are grateful for the expression of support that has given us strength as we go through this tragic time.
It is very comforting for our family to know that, while Derek’s life was far too short, he had a great impact on many people who he came into contact with. We are proud that Derek was able to live his boyhood dream to play in the National Hockey League. We are even more proud of the fact that Derek was dedicated to making a difference in his adopted communities of Minnesota and New York City, through his countless hours of charitable work.
Earlier today, we received the results of Derek’s toxicology report at the time of his accidental death. After repeated courageous attempts at rehabilitation and with the full support of the New York Rangers, the NHLPA, and the NHL, Derek had been showing tremendous improvement but was ultimately unable to beat this opponent. While he played and lived with pain for many years, his passion for the game, his teammates, and his community work was unstoppable.
Our family would like to like to thank the New York Rangers, the Minnesota Wild, the National Hockey League Players’ Association, and the National Hockey League for supporting Derek’s continued efforts in his battle.
Derek will be greatly missed and will never be forgotten by his fans, friends, and teammates, and especially by us – his family. We respectfully ask for continued privacy as we grieve the loss of Derek.”

Very sad. When I broke my wrist playing hockey 2 years ago, they gave me two different doses of percocet. I barely used them – I hate drugs/painkillers.
Not being facetious, but how many percocets and beers do you need to take together for this to happen? I’m guessing one of each isn’t enough to do someone in.
Sorry to hear that this young man was in a lot of pain physically and emotionally. My condolences.

I’m very sorry to hear what the cause was that killed Derek Boogaard – but judging by his family’s statement, it sounds like Derek had been fighting this problem for quite a long time, not just from his last injury.
Did our GM know about this before he signed Boogaard? Why would he take on a player with an acknowledged substance-abuse problem?
When signing free agents, isn’t there some type of “screening” that should be done to safeguard the investment of the organization in said players?

Slats thinks he’s Dr. Drew, and he’s going to fix all the players problems. Instead of sending them rehab, he gives them a massive contract!

I’m saddened by the news about Boogaard – but if his battle with drug dependence was known about before he was given his last contract, it is borderline insane to sign someone to such a massive contract without being sure that the player’s past problem has been dealt with sufficiently.
It would be grounds for dismissal of the GM if I were the owner of the team, if proper “due diligence” wasn’t done before the signing.
And as we can see from the example of Boogaard’s death – sweeping the problem under the rug doesn’t do much to help the player, either. He is not well-served by everyone looking the other way.
I wonder if Carker is breathing easy now. Some NYR fans labeled him the “murderer” once news broke.

I’m glad the family had the guts to release this sad news about Boogaard’s death.
But if they hadn’t released it, I think it would have been necessary for journalists to try to do so. Lives are in the balance. If the truth of Boogaard’s self destruction through drugs and/or alcohol saves even one life, the publication of the circumstances of his tragic end would be worth it… even if the family initially wished to keep it secret. Thankfully, they didn’t.
I hope those that attacked the reporters who tried to get to the truth of this story reconsider their position. Surely, Derek Boogaard would want (even in death) to help others struggling with the deadly problem he faced. Now, with the help of his brave family and some responsible reporters, he has. RIP.

Agree, RIR. Wholeheartedly. I was going to be quiet all day, didn’t want to say it…But for anyone who is in medical field, after the toxicology results were released, it’s pretty obvious what was the real cause…You don’t just accidentally die from taking Codeine derivative prescribed at regular doses for pain mixed with alcohol…This is serious stuff. And I think his family should be very proud for releasing this statement. Knowing now what kind of person Derek was, I’m sure he wouldn’t want it any other way….I’m sure he’d like his life to be an example and help to anyone who is struggling with this disease. I really hope that whoever brings the whole story up ( please, LB, if you’re the one, choose your words), does it with respect, dignity and care for the kind of person Derek was…RIP.
Yeah, I don’t think Slats shouldn’t be giving athletes a shot because they have substance abuse problems. Players are human and they deserve a chance to get their act together and to work.
And, if such puritanical concerns had existed in the old days, the NHL would have folded.
But does anyone know the contractual implications of a death? I assume it’s removed from the payroll?

My cat is mostly useless when it comes to slaughtering animals. Instead, she makes friends with them. She plays with the baby rabbits; the mother literally stands nearby and has no objection. She even brings them inside, completely unharmed, and the rabbits are in no distress. She also has a gopher friend and duck friends. Since I can remember, these three ducks have come to my backyard every spring and swam around in the pool. My cat hangs out with them too.
