through the New York Rangers:

STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY OF DEREK BOOGAARD

New York, May 20, 2011 – The family of Derek Boogaard issued the following statement today through the National Hockey League Players’ Association:

“We would like to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love and support for our family during this difficult period as we grieve the loss of Derek – our son and brother.   We are deeply saddened by this unimaginable loss, but we are grateful for the expression of support that has given us strength as we go through this tragic time.

It is very comforting for our family to know that, while Derek’s life was far too short, he had a great impact on many people who he came into contact with.  We are proud that Derek was able to live his boyhood dream to play in the National Hockey League. We are even more proud of the fact that Derek was dedicated to making a difference in his adopted communities of Minnesota and New York City, through his countless hours of charitable work.

Earlier today, we received the results of Derek’s toxicology report at the time of his accidental death.  After repeated courageous attempts at rehabilitation and with the full support of the New York Rangers, the NHLPA, and the NHL, Derek had been showing tremendous improvement but was ultimately unable to beat this opponent.  While he played and lived with pain for many years, his passion for the game, his teammates, and his community work was unstoppable.

Our family would like to like to thank the New York Rangers, the Minnesota Wild, the National Hockey League Players’ Association, and the National Hockey League for supporting Derek’s continued efforts in his battle.

Derek will be greatly missed and will never be forgotten by his fans, friends, and teammates, and especially by us – his family. We respectfully ask for continued privacy as we grieve the loss of Derek.”

Ok, who wants to watch Net Worth next? Don’t miss out on this interesting DVD while it’s on it’s 2011 North American Bonehead Summer Tour!!

After you watch it you should ask on the blog who wants to watch it next.

  2. Very sad. When I broke my wrist playing hockey 2 years ago, they gave me two different doses of percocet. I barely used them – I hate drugs/painkillers.

Not being facetious, but how many percocets and beers do you need to take together for this to happen? I’m guessing one of each isn’t enough to do someone in.

Sorry to hear that this young man was in a lot of pain physically and emotionally. My condolences.

Maybe the rapture is coming – freaking Macho Man Randy Savage has a heart attack and dies. There goes another childhood legend :(

  3. JimboWoodside on

I’ll say something here that is probably not very nice – but I’ll say it anyway.

I’m very sorry to hear what the cause was that killed Derek Boogaard – but judging by his family’s statement, it sounds like Derek had been fighting this problem for quite a long time, not just from his last injury.

Did our GM know about this before he signed Boogaard? Why would he take on a player with an acknowledged substance-abuse problem?

When signing free agents, isn’t there some type of “screening” that should be done to safeguard the investment of the organization in said players?

  4. see, its the legal drugs that will kill you…this country is really aasen-backwards sometimes

  5. JimboWoodside on

I suppose that he was, Orr – to be honest, I’m not 100% sure.

I’m saddened by the news about Boogaard – but if his battle with drug dependence was known about before he was given his last contract, it is borderline insane to sign someone to such a massive contract without being *sure* that the player’s past problem has been dealt with sufficiently.

It would be grounds for dismissal of the GM if I were the owner of the team, if proper “due diligence” wasn’t done before the signing.

  6. JimboWoodside on

And as we can see from the example of Boogaard’s death – sweeping the problem under the rug doesn’t do much to help the player, either. He is not well-served by everyone looking the other way.

  7. JimboWoodside on

Whatever fans said that are aasen-holes! When two heavyweights decide to throw down, they both know what the consequences could be.

  8. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

ran some errands with the fam and just got done. seems I’m grating someone…

  9. Rhode Island Ranger on

I’m glad the family had the guts to release this sad news about Boogaard’s death.

But if they hadn’t released it, I think it would have been necessary for journalists to try to do so. Lives are in the balance. If the truth of Boogaard’s self destruction through drugs and/or alcohol saves even one life, the publication of the circumstances of his tragic end would be worth it… even if the family initially wished to keep it secret. Thankfully, they didn’t.

I hope those that attacked the reporters who tried to get to the truth of this story reconsider their position. Surely, Derek Boogaard would want (even in death) to help others struggling with the deadly problem he faced. Now, with the help of his brave family and some responsible reporters, he has. RIP.

  10. Agree, RIR. Wholeheartedly. I was going to be quiet all day, didn’t want to say it…But for anyone who is in medical field, after the toxicology results were released, it’s pretty obvious what was the real cause…You don’t just accidentally die from taking Codeine derivative prescribed at regular doses for pain mixed with alcohol…This is serious stuff. And I think his family should be very proud for releasing this statement. Knowing now what kind of person Derek was, I’m sure he wouldn’t want it any other way….I’m sure he’d like his life to be an example and help to anyone who is struggling with this disease. I really hope that whoever brings the whole story up ( please, LB, if you’re the one, choose your words), does it with respect, dignity and care for the kind of person Derek was…RIP.

  11. Yeah, I don’t think Slats shouldn’t be giving athletes a shot because they have substance abuse problems. Players are human and they deserve a chance to get their act together and to work.

And, if such puritanical concerns had existed in the old days, the NHL would have folded.

But does anyone know the contractual implications of a death? I assume it’s removed from the payroll?

  12. On a lighter side I feel like share some funny dialog I just had with my wife…who BTW, is as far from hockey, as Don Cherry from common fashion sense. Don’t know about others, but I sometimes unconsciously use our RR lingo at home and around, here and there (it’s really contagious to regular readers) so, not a biggie… But just now, I hit my knee in the kitchen, sudden sharp pain and I went shouting: “byfuglien carsillo!!! “. My wife calmly responds: “Wow, I didn’t know that deep down you’re Italian. Can you sing in Italian too?” I couldn’t help, but laugh and, now deliberately, mattered: “Cookeing cabinet!” She (seriously) back: “you mean gas range, what you hit?”. “No, the hartnelling cabinet, for abdelkader sake.” “Are you sure you hit your knee, not head?” End of dialog.

  13. TB against Boston at 1:30 pm tomorrow? Unless there is an overtime, it should be over before Rapture :-)

  14. JimboWoodside on

Well, Canucks – Sharks is coming up – I guess if the Sharks have any chance at all to get back into this series, they’d better win tonight…

  15. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

    4ever, lmfao!!

    go nucks!!

Guess the sharks aren’t very “eager”!!

  16. JimboWoodside on

I’m just hoping that no Canadian team wins the cup…nothing personal against Vancouver.

  17. JimboWoodside on

I’m more annoyed at the Canadian fans and media than I am at anyone on the Canucks.

  18. Jimbo- quite opposite: I believe it’s time for Canadian team to win the Cup. Last time that happened, the Rangers won the Cup one year after. I have Canadian friends who live in Montana now. Ryan Kessler is my favorite US player outside of the Rangers players.

  19. JimboWoodside on

Why can’t Brian Boyle stand in front of the net like Clowe!? He’s got the size….

  20. JimboWoodside on

I hear you, ilb…..I have nothing against Canadian folks – I like them! But their hockey fans & media are so chauvinistic about their game that they annoy me.

That said, I like Don Cherry – so I guess I’m conflicted! Or nuts?

  21. JimboWoodside on

If a Canadian team has to win a cup, I think I’d like to see the Maple Leafs win it – their fans are long-suffering, like Ranger fans are….

But their management is almost as bad as ours is!

  25. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

wait, should I be answering one word at a time??

  26. Vancouver – just very exciting team to watch, too bad referees decided today to give it to Sharks home crowd (this game, I mean). BTW, isn’t Kessler looks very much like WW? As for Canadian’s fans, IMO their biggest downside is that they too often confuse national pride with dull homegrown xenophobia. It never angers me, just because it always looks, sounds and feels pathetic. They do have real things in country and hockey to be proud of.

  27. JimboWoodside on

Great points, 4ever – and I agree, they have a lot to be proud of – they don’t need to overdo it, but they usually do!

  38. billy?

I tried that but my fiance is allergic! I thought it would be easier to get a cat at this hour than to get a mouse trap.

  39. Olga Folkyerself on

Trap? Put peanut butter on a mousetrap.

    SNAP!

Mouse gets a front seat for the Rapture!

  40. My cat usually takes care of mice. He likes to whack them with his paw, and let it get away, then chase it down, smack it around until it scares itself to death. Then he plays soccer with the dead body.

    Good exercise for him.

  41. Jimbo? How do mice scare themselves to death? They actually die easily from stress, right?

  42. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

love the kesler slash at the end of the game

  43. JimboWoodside on

They do scare (and die) easily – I think they have heart attacks or something. But only if something really scares them, like a cat!

  44. Manny, yeah, they’re very fragile. If they get caught on one of those sticky traps, they literally kill themselves trying to get out. It’s like the fat high school girl swimming in a pool thinking she’s going to lose all the weight in two hours. They just drop dead!

  45. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

so if the rapture doesn’t happen, do I have to change my handle back?

  46. Olga Folkyerself on

    Go Sharks!

Ranger fans don’t root for Philly, Black Hawk fans don’t root for Vancouver…

  47. JimboWoodside on

Was that hit really deserving of a 5 minute major? What do you guys think?

  48. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

    manny
after the rapture there will be a lot of cats available for adoption through a certain website I think

  49. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

so do I keep the handle?

  50. JimboWoodside on

Hahahaha!! The cast of Cats will go running from your apartment shrieking if they see the mouse – *they* might have the heart attacks, so don’t do it!

  51. JimboWoodside on

I didn’t think so either, Manny – it might have been a charging penalty, but not a match!

  52. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody raptures!!) on

are you going to award lunch points on the other side? Wait, you posted, never mind

  71. My cat is mostly useless when it comes to slaughtering animals. Instead, she makes friends with them. She plays with the baby rabbits; the mother literally stands nearby and has no objection. She even brings them inside, completely unharmed, and the rabbits are in no distress. She also has a gopher friend and duck friends. Since I can remember, these three ducks have come to my backyard every spring and swam around in the pool. My cat hangs out with them too.

  72. JimboWoodside on

  79. I live in ye olde Bergen County, Jimbo. It’s weird for my neighborhood; I have an unowned clearing behind my house with trees and shrubs, so there are a bunch of animals that live back there.

    Wicky,

Your post also made me laugh. Manny just sucks, and only wins if there is no other option.

  86. Olga,

    Jimbo,

No, although there used to be a chicken farm back there. That was before my time, however. My cat also climbs trees with squirrels. Fair Lawn is literally a five minute drive from my humble abode.

  87. JimboWoodside on

  104. That’s actually where my mother had her surgery, if anyone was aware. She’s home recovering now.

  105. The Land & Sea Diner is right across the street from Radburn Station. I take Radburn Station to Secaucus Junction to Penn Station to see.. none other than.. the Rangers! Oh how I miss them.

  106. JimboWoodside on

I hope she’s doing well! That’s a good hospital……..gets very good ratings for its care.

Boyle can of course stand in the goal mouth, but you have to
understand..that’s not the Ranger style. They just stand around and slap pucks at the goal sort of, (missing about 80% time),but that business of being a threat in the goal mouth is simply not what they are taught or their coaches ( apparently) approve of. That’s strictly for ruffians.
