Contest question for youse; conference final schedules

You never know when it’s the right time to go back to normal stuff in a situation like we’ve had today and last night.

But there is a hockey game tonight as the conference finals begin, and so I’m sure a lot of you are ready to get back to hockey here, at least for a while. So here’s a post that was going to go up this morning.

Calling all Boneheads. I need your advice on the last predictions contest … or I can just give first prize to Sally. But since she won the beard contest, I’d prefer to pick a winner for the last round of predictions.

Here’s the dilemma. One entrant picked all four series correctly. He failed to pick any tiebreakers, though.

Seven others had three out of four. Of those seven, nobody had the first tiebreaker (score of Boston-Philly clincher) correct, none had the GWG correct. So it would go to the final tiebreaker, closest to Boston saves.

So, in your opinion, do I declare the 4-0 guy the winner because he was alone at 4-0? Or do I disqualify him for not giving tiebreakers and go with the winner of the last tiebreaker among those who picked three series correctly?

I will await your opinions throughout this thread. Once a new thread goes up the decision will be made. I will add this: Both the guy who was 4-0 with no tiebreakers, and the guy who was 3-1 with the best tiebreaker are loyal regular Boneheads, for what that’s worth.

FYI, I had three of four correct also.

  1. The tiebreakers are only there to break a tie. Since there was no tie, he should be the winner at 4-0. It’s only fair

  2. Uh oh, by taking the side of whoever won at 4-0, I may have just cost him. My bad! Ive changed; Im now staunchly against the 4-0 guy! :)

  3. Tiebreaker is not part of the rule. Tiebreaker is only designed to break a tie. No tie, he won outright. But I’m against him anyhow! :)

  4. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I agree with Ted….no tie breaker was needed the 4-0 guy/girl should win.

    TB – 6 games

    Van – 7 games

  5. So you think it should be decided by a skills competition, Carp?

4-0 is OK with me, since there was no tie. But the prize should only be half as impressive as that for going 8-0 in Round 1…

  6. The tiebreaker is supposed to break the tie. If there is no tie, you don’t look at the tiebreaker.

  7. NO tiebreaker needed…the 4-0 person should win…if there were a tiebreaker, that person would be then have been last.

  8. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

The 4-0 guy deserves it. He potentially screwed himself in the situation that he tied, but since he was the only 4-0 why does he even need a “tie-breaker” prediction?

  9. Larry Brooks had an article put up on the NY Post website that to not draw any conclusions from this but Boogaard had entered the NHLPA drug program with one left to go in the season. This is all so tragic.

  10. Larry Brooks: Let me point this out, blah blah blah, but dont draw any inferences from it.
Well, why did you even mention it? Was it that newsworthy, or did you just want to cause speculation. How about giving the deceased and his family some privacy. No matter how he died, he was a great guy with an enormous heart and he was lost too soon.

  11. JimboWoodside on

I did not make any picks, so I have no opinion on how the prize winner is selected. I have to say, though – someone going 4 – 0 is pretty good!

Boogaard entered the NHLPA’s drug program? Geez, I sure hope this doesn’t end up being a sordid story. His death is tragic enough without any further sullying of his memory.

  12. If Torts *has* to get fired, I hope he’s fired for breaking a couple of bones in Brooks’ face!

He’s a moron. So desperate to break that news. I bet others knew aboot that, but decided not to mention it, out of respect.

Brooks once again proving why he’s a piece of shyte that deserves no respect from anyone.

  13. jpg's sister on

I think 4-0 guy should win. Tiebreaker picks are for tiebreakers. if someone else was 4-0 and he had no tiebreaker pick than the other guy should have won. You didn’t need a tiebreaker to pick a winner, since someone picked more

  14. i know this is a hockey blog and you guys dont want to hear about this, but it sounds like Jorge Posada is going to announce his retirement tonight. for me very sad past 2 days in sports.

  15. LOL! Morg, Wiz Khalifa? Did you hear Stepan’s version? He substitutes blackandyellow with Zuccarello…haha!

    Give 1st prize to Sally!

  16. Joelsherman1Joel Sherman
I hear Posada is not retiring and also that #Yankees were not on board with him pulling self from lineup, clear clash here

  17. Teddy, just wish he got one final farewell, though im sure the fans will chant his name tomorrow. just want him to play one last game, dont care if he goes 0-10.

  18. Rest in Peace, Boogeyman. We barely got to know you and frankly it doesn’t matter. Someone this young, it’s a terrible, terrible tragedy.

As for the cause, my money says it wasn’t drugs, and it had nothing to do with concussions. Given his tremendous size, I would not be at all surprised if he had an undiagnosed cardiomyopathy (similar to Cherepanov), had an arryhtmia and died. The reason people jump on the drugs and concussions bandwagon is because they need a reason why this couldn’t happen to them. But it could.

  19. Dont you just hate the way Doc “true professional” Emrick yells for no reason every time the puck is touched?

  20. Peter i agree, first thing i thought was that he had similar condition to Cherry. also think it was very unprofessional of Brooks to publish what he did. and i dont dislike nearly as much as some of you here. but i didnt care for that at all.

  21. I do, CCCP. He yells over nothing. He sounds bitter and immature quite often, and when he yells for no reason, he sounds like an amateur.

  22. Did anyone hear how sickeningly Emrick just yelled? as if that was a Cup winning goal or Kesler’s Olympic goal. I really dislike that unprofessional.

  23. WOW! Well, the Phil Kessel trade is working out!! Great move by Seguin…very impressive…

  24. throwing this out now if lightning blowa 3-0 lead tonite they lose series for sure

  25. Wicky (trying to go as fast as ILB on this thing) on

I agree with cccp on the contest.

    Nucks in 6
    Bruins in 7

  26. JimboWoodside on

“beauty, but doc just pooped himself”

He does get excited, doesn’t he!?

  27. Wicky (trying to go as fast as ILB on this thing) on

Thanks, my dog appreciated the sentiment!

  28. JimboWoodside on

Final Cut Pro, NYR – but it’s expensive and there’s a steep learning curve…..

  29. ORR

Not sure if you were serious but Sean Bergenheim is not an elite talent lol

14 goals won’t get you to elite level

Every playoff year has its hero

  30. JimboWoodside on

If you have a Mac, iMovie isn’t a bad program either…not as slick as Final Cut Pro, but it does a lot of things.

  31. Dude! The 4-0 guy didn’t need a tiebreaker so he wins. If there was a tie then he would have automatically lost. Give him his prize!

    Lightning in 5.
    Canucks in 7.

  32. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Why do GM’s in all sports tender players such idiotic long-term contracts, for what figure to be non-productive years? I see Posada is “insulted” that the club wants him to bat ninth, while he is hitting a not too robust .165. He is 39, he can no longer catch nor run, and now he can’t hit. What the hell were the Yankees thinking, besides short-term gain four years ago, in giving in to the demands of Posada’s agent?

This goes double for hockey where careers are even more injury-prone and shorter. Why would you give a player in his early 30’s a four to five year deal? But they do, like there is no end to the money and no end to these athletes having productive career years. Can we learn a lesson here, Rangers management?

  33. Orr

The genius Snow called Grabner *elite* after signing him to his deal this week too. If he ends up calling Village People Gillies *elite* we should all go home.

  34. Good night, Carp! As much as I like winning, I say the 4-0 guy deserves to get this one. But I’ll support your decision either way. Carp knows best!

Latona, Carp definitely deserves a lunch point for yesterday.

    Who won lunch contest today?

  35. JimboWoodside on

You’re welcome, NYR – I know someone who uses them both, very often – I have not used them myself yet.

  36. I think the 4 – 0 guy/gal deserves to win. No tie breaker needed.

Larry Brooks should show some respect. He’ll write anything for a story.

RIP Derek Boogaard. You’re The Man!

  37. Cross Check, MSG Network showed all those videos during the season. Just sayin.

    Good evening, Sally!

Part of me hopes the C.O.D. with Boogaard remains private. Not sure we want to know, pretty sure it’s none of our business, nor does it matter that we know. But I think that report you guys are discussing is going to be part of the story.

  38. Carp so youre saying theres a chance it was drugs? overdose perhaps? did the NYR not know anything about this? seems strange.

  39. im sure we are all curious as to how he passes but in end it doesnt matter a man lost his life at 28.

its crazy the rangerd had 3 deaths in past few years.

  40. I am not going to speculate on this. The Brooks story is fact. Whether it has anything to do with his demise is to be determined by science, not by discussion.

  41. It’s definitely safe to assume it’s a part of the story, but still, for that cooke-sucker to post that so soon after Booger’s death. What a loser!

I’ve never liked Brooks. But, I think that’s just been upgraded to “hate”! Fugger!

  42. JimboWoodside on

Bruins PP looks terribly ineffective – have they been watching films of the NYR PP?

  43. I don’t think there is anything wrong with Brooks disclosing that. He is a journalist. Is it uncomfortable info? Of course. I did not read the article, so can’t comment on presentation of info. You guys wouldn’t make good muckrakers. Jus’ Sayin.

NYR_fan, bro, don’t even go near Final Cut Pro if you are new to video editing…the new iMovie is a super program that allows many FCP features in automated fashion. If you need tad better, go with Final Cut Express….if you not on mac, then buy a mac first..;)

  44. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Bergenheim in 3 rounds will outscore the ranger team’s first round total.

  45. eddie x 3, if the ref blows that whistle earlier on LQ, we are watching the NYR rt now…;)

  46. im not asking for you to speculate cause of death, i just asked if the NYR were aware and if they did anything to intervene. as of Brooks publishing that story less than 24 hours after the news broke, before anyone else printed it, i dont like it. and im sure the Boogaard family feels the same way. you dont go from articles like in the Star Tribune or whatever it was to Brooksie’s article so quickly, fact or not.

  47. It’s classless. Doesn’t matter if it’s his job. Show some respect, and let the autopsy play out before you start planting the idea in everyone’s mind, that Booger could have potentially been a junkie, which is what everyone is now thinking.

    Brooks = Monster bouchebag

  48. “The news of Derek’s untimely passing was so sudden and unexpected. Out of respect to Derek and the Boogaard family, the only comment I feel comfortable making today is that my thoughts and prayers are with them in their time need.”

    – Torts

  49. I understand the horrific implications, but this is apparently NOT a Star Tribune article replete with rumored info. This is a fact that prolly no one was aware of, and he has a duty to report. You can’t filter information based on what feels good or is proper decorum for those suffering. Now Brooks being a receptacle of sorts is another issue.

  50. Why is MDZ not following any of the other Rangers on Twitter? He welcomes his buddy Prust, then doesn’t follow him? That kid has issues still, and I stand by call that he will not be the Brian Leetch type people were hoping for. He is smallish and skates like he is stuck in a WWI trench.

  51. MichaelDelZotto Michael Del Zotto
Still in shock over the boogey man. Miss him so much! Such a down to earth, laid back, amazing friend. Thoughts going to the Boogaard family

  52. JimboWoodside on

NYR, most of the “serious” video editing programs are really designed to be used with the Mac platform. And they are resource hogs, too – so you need a fast processor and lots of memory.

  53. Despite it being a fact, does it really make a difference whether he reports that “fact” after the results of the autopsy instead of the day after the guy died?? Is it really *that* important to be the first to report that?? No respect! Hate him!

By the way, Kaberle sucks, and all of a sudden Thomas = Monster

  54. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I would think Boogy’s issues were probably alcohol related (just my worthless hunch) and that his heart just gave out. In the end, it doesn’t matter what happened. Hello mao

  55. So now the bruins are intentionally trying to hurt people. Sounds about right. a boston team loses, they turn violent.

  56. Lev, to answer your question in general terms … if a player enters the NHL/NHLPA substance abuse/behavioral program, his team certainly is aware of it.

  57. That’s under a minute to play, can Lucic or Horton be suspended for that? Id think Avery would be suspended for similar actions.

Also, will Carcillo be suspended and have mandatory anger management classes for his classless comments about women via twitter.

  58. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Doc and old chick make a cute couple. The bald headed one could be their live child

  59. Just asking about suspensions. I thought misconducts under a minute were subject to penalization.

  60. 4-0 should get it, and should get bonus points for his confidence that he didn’t need tiebreakers.

  61. JimboWoodside on

Yeah, Eddie – a large, pulsating hard drive – with FireWire if it is an external one. ;-D

  62. JimboWoodside on

Well, the Bruins sure got outplayed tonight. A 3-goal burst by the Bolts, and it was over, for all intents and purposes.

  63. looks like the Boogaard family has donated Derek’s brain to BU’s medical researchers.

  64. Are the Rangers planning to wear a special #94 patch next season in memoriam of Boogaard?

    It’d be criminal not to….

  65. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " sad day "...says Greg L. on

The big man from Saskatoon , some say he was over paid ..I say he wasn’t . His slap shot blew the doors off the place and his presence struck fear into other players (sob) He was my favorite Ranger in his short time with us. I even named my hockey draft team after him and lost money because of him…He can’t be replaced , he was my hero.

  66. aww Greg. We’re all here for you buddy. As a fellow Saskatoonian, you make Boogy proud. RIP Booguardian

  67. True Blue Mike on

The 4-0 guy! I mean even Sally thinks he should win! Plus i am sure he didn’t mean to not put the tiebreaker and just assumed there wasn’t one since the Rangers were knocked out and he didn’t know what the tiebreaking team would be. And he was probably just very lazy and copied and pasted your 4 picks and then just changed a few things around. Im sure he has already learned his lesson although. =D

  68. Canucks in 7 over Sharks & although after the fact TB in 6 over the Bruins. It looks like another Cup for Tampa Bay in 7 over Vancouver. Too fast and very talented. Only dent in their armor could be defense.
