Another day to celebrate; a last day to vote

Happy Victory Day!

The end of World War II was marked by Nazi Germany’s capitulation to the Soviet Union on this day in 1945.

So that was a pretty good day, eh?

Today is also your last chance to vote in the second bi-annual Paul Mara Playoff Beard Contest Extravaganza (picnic postponed for lack of interest).

So please do so by clicking here.

Team USA is taking on Switzerland over in Slovakia this morning, but I don’t think there’s much at stake — I haven’t really paid attention to this J.V. tournament or its technicalities, especially since it insists on having games and perhaps a championship decided by a silly, gimmicky skills competition.

Vancouver-Nashville Game 6 tonight at 8 p.m. on Versus (sorry for the error earlier).

I love the first two rounds of the playoffs because not only is it the best hockey of the year, but because there are games every night, usually multiple games each night. Now it starts to dwindle down to one most nights, and soon one every other night or so, and then none for months. Bryzgalov.

  1. Last day to vote? How will I make up the votes? I think there is no way to catch Sally!

  2. Happy 26th, C3P! A little celebration in a coat-check room?

    Good morning, Sally!

You know who was a soft European? Peter Forsberg. And Ulf Samuelsson. And Slava Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov.

  3. Doodie Machetto on

CCCP was not born today, but rather spawned by Germany’s surrender to Mother Russia!

  4. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, it is said that Italy’s pathetic attempt to invade Greece is what cost Hitler the war.

  5. I thought lack of fuel (gas for Panzer tanks specifically) cost Hitler the war?

  6. Detroit is lucky that all these injured Europeans wussed out last night and didn’t show up….

  7. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, Italy was being crushed in Greece, causing Hitler to have to delay his invasion of Russia to help them. This has later been shown to be untrue, but it had been said.

  8. He should not be allowed to be a janitor working for a national TV station. Marleau isn’t having a great series, and Datsyuk stripped him off the puck twice on GWG, but calling your former teammate that is classless.

  9. billybleedsblue on

There was really no single reason that the nazis were defeated. I’m no expert, but there was lots of mistakes made (by hitler), not just a single event held responsible for their downfall.

  10. Cool Doodie. Thanks. I love learning history whenever it’s available! I also love making fun of the Italian army circa 1940’s.

  11. Billy – Those two lookers on the grassy Knoll. Models. (reference – Zoolander).

  12. Wicky (trying to go as fast as ILB on this thing) on

    Morning ILB and all!!

So let me get this straight gutless=classless?

Where did the soft euros convo start?

Happy actual birthday to one of my favorite Ukrainians!!

Should have stopped hitler in Czechoslovakia in ’36

  13. CTBlueshirt on

The second shooter? Roger McDowell? Although from the sound of it, spitting is the least offensive thing that McDowell could do to you these days.

  14. Doodie Machetto on

I don’t think it’s classless of Roenick to criticize his former teammate. Not one bit. Where I think he went wrong is by not adding to it. Like, you can call the guy gutless, but then explain that you know how good he is and how he has to be a leader and impose himself on a game. But calling him gutless and leaving it like that, I can understand how that would leave a bad taste since they were teammates (and I think Marleau was also captain at the time).

But in fairness, if he had never played with the guy, nobody would be thinking twice about what he said.

  15. Wicky, previous post..

My father was a 19 yr old, 2 yr war veteran already, when the war finished in Germany. He was stationed in Dresden on May 9th. Still very proud and emotional when he talks about it.

  16. Thanks everyone!

I like what Doodie said… about spawning! i like it!

i think i tell this story every year on my birthday but… when i was born (Victory Day..obviously) they gave my mom a replica of Order of Victory at the hospital! When my full name, date and place of birth on the back! It is very special!

Real Order of Victory is covered in diamonds and rubies and is pretty much priceless.

  17. If we’re gonna get into WWII here, I have to say that the Battle of Britain was perhaps the most crucial moment in the European theatre. I don’t feel like the US could have handled the Western front in Europe on our own, combined with the Pacific, North Africa, Italy, etc.

  18. A couple of weeks ago I was at a meeting in the Gramercy Park Hotel and the guy that played Joe Toy in Band Of Brothers was having an espresso at the table next to me. That was cool and WWII related.

  19. “I don’t think it’s classless of Roenick to criticize his former teammate. Not one bit.”

From his little podium on VS yes it was. This isn’t the WWF. But it’s VS decision to keep him on and he has the right to say anything aside from swear words and “sloppy seconds” (or thirds that would be the worst).

Call him soft or something but “gutless” is pretty much the worst thing you can say about a hockey player. Other than “HEY HAMMERHAN! YOUR WIFE’S A @#%^”!

I don’t see JR being a mainstay on VS. Get Matthew Barnaby in there if you want a recent ex-player. As much as I hated him through his career he’s a decent analyst. Him and Melrose were like a circus on ESPN but at least it was entertaining (and Melrose was the clown).

  20. Latona don’t forget the French who were waving white flags and deserting before Hitler even attacked. Very crucial part in the war.

  21. Doodie

3750 GBP in 1945 was the price to make it…not to sell it :)

i do not think you can buy / find it for sale today or back then.

  22. Doodie Machetto on

noonan, they were trying to freeze the German soldiers with the breeze from the flags.

  23. I think JR actually is good when he’s doing his little analysis thing with the TV that he draws on. Other than that he says really ridiculous things. But hey, that’s fun! He cried at the Olympics. He’s an emotional, crazy guy. I actually enjoy watching him. He and Jones are just a tough pair because they are both so snarky.

  24. and something you won’t see in the history books:

the French were pretty much made into little brownshirts and started their own concentration camps there. and they have the nerve to bash the US. LOL.

If North Korea rolled in there today they’d all be praising Dear Leader for allowing them to live.

  25. Doodie Machetto on

noonan, if he had said it about, say… Nicklas Backstrom, nobody would have blinked. The only reason it raises eyebrows is because he and Marleau played together. Which is why I think he should have added something to it to clarify because without it, it seems like he has an ax to grind.

Read the Puck Daddy story on it, he basically says what I’m saying, except he did a much better job of it since he has specific examples he can point to.

  26. Doodie Machetto on

Oh, something else that I keep forgetting to mention. I think Todd McClellan looks a lot like Dave Foley, so I always picture him with that nasally whiny voice. Instead, I think McClellan has the deepest voice of any coach in the NHL.

  27. billybleedsblue on

That’s really interesting for the Finnish to have a Russian player…as far as I know, the Finns don’t particularly care for the Russians…

  28. Izzy Mandlebaum on

Hitler lost the minute he stepped off against Mother Russia. His next mistake was declaring war on US after Pearl Harbor. Too many enemies.

    He couldn’t handle the weight….

  29. “But in fairness, if he had never played with the guy, nobody would be thinking twice about what he said.”

I don’t even care to be honest. I thought to myself “classless” when I heard him say it then it was mentioned in this thread so I shared my thoughts.

I’m pretty sure Marleu didn’t call Roenick anything like “gutless” or a “has-been trying to collect his last paycheck” or “trying to win a Cup from the bench” during his final two years with the Sharks.

Where Roenick put up a whopping 18 goals and 28 assists over 2 seasons.

He’s a HOFer. Act like you’ve been there before.

  30. “Hitler lost the minute he stepped off against Mother Russia. His next mistake was declaring war on US after Pearl Harbor. Too many enemies.”

Germany did get manhandled by Russia’s scorched earth policy. They either had to go in kamikaze style and make everyone their slaves and take all their belongings (as they did the French) or not even attack in the first place.

Japan attacking Pearl Harbor was pretty dumb in hindsight. Germany was very angry at them saying “you’ve awoken a sleeping giant”. Then they got what they deserved.

  31. “Roenick isn’t going to whiff the HOF.”

561 goals 1374 points much of which before they changed the game into a scorers league. If he doesn’t get a “whiff” it’s because he’s been a jerk.

  32. Doodie Machetto on

noonan, why he doesn’t get a whiff is because he never won anything. The Hall calls winners.

  33. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

The World Ice Hockey Championships are really well run and are really exciting. Your comments suggest you think not. It may not be the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it may include a skills competition here and there, but the point system takes that into account. (unlike the NHL)

I have been there, and the atmosphere is amazing, and the patriotism and fanfare for each country is what makes it (in some minority amount of aspects) even more exciting then the league playoffs. (NHL, KHL, Swedish elite, etc…I said minority amount of aspects).

The NHL playoffs are the best and most exciting hockey to watch. I’m just sayin the World Championships are also exciting, and more fun in terms of rooting for your country and enjoying the cultural aspects and differences of some of the other teams and countries.

BTW, I think Boston-TB is a great match up and for sure the two best teams in the East have reached the finals. (best teams as of the playoffs time frame, probably they were also two of the healthiest at the time as well)

And just when you think that SJ looks like a finalist, last night happens and you remember how great Detroit is and for how long they have been great.

  34. Suffice it to say, JR’s TV gig isn’t enhancing his image as a person, and his on ice achievements will fade very fast from people’s memories if he continues to make dumb and classless remarks…

  35. CTBlueshirt on

Hawerchuk and Goulet are within the same group of goal scorers as Roenick and both are in the HOF.

  36. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

So you JR bashers are saying he is not a hall of famer ? So he will join the top 10 list of best players just not quite good enough for the hall of fame.

Pavel Bure, Dino Ciccarelli, Doug Gilmour (spelling check on all these names)

He will be in good company.

All the hall of fames for all the major sports have been cheapened over the years with undeserving players that should have been considered great players, but just not great enough

  37. Would anyone do this trade: Girardi and Grachev to the Flyers for Jeff Carter?

  38. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

Well there you go then. 20 years in the league, no cups, two arrests and he is in the HOF (Dino)

  39. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    let me think about this…..yes!

of course i’d send dubi, girardi, and gilroy to the flames for iggy..ah well, good thing I’m not in charge right!

I think the Finns stand in 39-40 was pretty incredible as well.

    Is hrasko draft eligible?

  40. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

So the Hall of Fame does NOT just call winners, it also calls losers.

There are great players in all the hall of fames that never won any championships.

The Cubs and Red Sox went 100 years without winning and must have some HOFers

The Rangers went 54 years between winning (more than half of those years only had 6 teams) and most of had some HOFers in there

  41. Jim, I do that trade in a sec…

I think it would take more than that…probably a McDonagh or a Stepan…

  42. Probably not enough for Carter, but I suspect Carter will be shopped because the Flyers, who are up against the Cap, finally realize they need a goalie.

And no to Iggy – he’s too old.

  43. Yeah, but how much would they be taking back with Girardi, and Grachev?

Also, their defense isn’t the problem, it’s their goaltending.

If they’re going to give up a 40-50 goal scorer, then I’d imagine they’re going to want a forward like Artie, or Step-On, instead of an unproven prospect.

Good trade for us, bad trade for them.

  44. Here’s the Flyer defense: Pronger, Timonen, Coburn, Carle, Meszaros, O’Donnell, Boynton and Bartulis. Good top 4, although the first 2 are getting on in age and this year, especially Timonen, suffered under increased minutes. Girardi would be an excellent fit there, playing alongside one of those 1st 2.

IMO, this could be the perfect time to move Girardi – he’s being revered across the hockey world for his courage and effectiveness. Rightfully so, of course, but IMO, injuries are right around the corner and if they start, he won’t be worth as much.

Don’t get me wrong – I like Girardi, but you gotta give to get.

Also, if Flyers want McDonagh and Stepan then no deal and pursue Brad Richards (it’s quite possible that if I’m correct in the Flyers looking to shop Carter to make room for a goalie, it could very well happen at the June draft).

  45. Mannyfried on

Jim – Good point. You really would be selling high on Girardi and I could feel confident and proud if we move him.

  46. “I wish the Rangers would only sign and draft Americans and Canadian kids. The work ethic of most europeans sucks and they are usually Pansies on the ice.I’ll take north Americans any day…”

I’m a bit late on the reaction to VinceA’s latest masterpiece, but allow me to throw my weight behind his stunningly modern and progressive thinking. I’m only disappointed he didn’t call us Euros the Communist homosexuals that at least 97% of us are.

Can we get a guest post from VinceA please, Carp? Between this and his founder membership of the Fire Torts bandwagon, his stuff is gold. Pure gold.

  47. Doodie Machetto on

CTB, Hawerchuck has 200 more points than Roenick in 200 less games played. I don’t think they are in the same class, at all.

Goulet had only 70 points less than Roenick while playing in almost 300 less games. Still not that good of a comparison.

  48. i think if Flyers trade anyone then it’ll be Briere… no way they trade Carter away

    VinceA = SOFT

  49. Doodie Machetto on

Cicarelli is a 600 goal scorer. That’s a different category than 500 goal scorers.

  50. CCCP: 2 years ago the Flyers were prepared to move Jeff Carter (and a first) to Toronto for Tomas Karable, but the deal fell through because the latter refused to waive his NTC.

Besides, Biere has one of those, too (as does Richards, Hartnell and Timonen – who does Holmgren think he is? Sather???!).

  51. CTBlueshirt on

You made the statement that the HOF only calls winners, not about their overall points and points per game.

That said, the 500 goal club is still a pretty exclusive club. Only 41 players, most of which are in the HOF. He’s only the 3rd American to hit that benchmark. His outspoken attitude probably has cost him some votes, but there are some compelling reasons as to why he would stand a chance.

  52. Doodie Machetto on

CTB, perhaps I should alter what I said. The Hall PREFERS winners. The modern-day Hall still takes a few non-winners (of either personal or team trophies), but they all have much better numbers than Roenick.

  53. Doodie Machetto on

Or Maybe not. Either way, I don’t think Roenick gets in. Too many good names in front of him.

  54. CTBlueshirt on

I don’t think he’s a lock by any stretch, but 500 goals and being one of a handful of Americans to get that amount might be enough of a reason for some people to vote for him.

  55. CTBlueshirt on

Among active (but nearing retirement) or the recently retired players I’d say Lidstrom and Brodeur are locks, Shanahan and Selanne too. Jagr should get in, so should Sakic.

I do wonder if all 3 of Fedorov, Mogilny and Bure get in.

  56. Doodie Machetto on

In addition to those you mentioned. Recchi probably gets in too.

  57. Doodie Machetto on

You know what, I think Roenick might get in just because there is going to be a lack of quality guys for a couple of years. He might get in on a “soft” class.

  58. Mannyfried on

Even if Crosby never plays another day he will get in on reputation alone.

  59. Slatsko Folkyerself on

“Would anyone do this trade: Girardi and Grachev to the Flyers for Jeff Carter?”

Trouble is Slats would end up with Jimmy Carter, Hurricane Carter or Nell Carter or a years supply of Carter’s Little Liver Pills.

  60. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

Doodie, I agree. JR was a great player, among the best not great enough for the HOF
the HOF is for the great players not the teams. ( Dionne, all Sabres (Perrault), Ratelle, Park, laFontaine, Gartner, Salming, Stastny, Sittler, Hawerchuk…all never won anything, I am sure there are tons more)

  61. Slatsko Folkyerself on

I wish Sather was in the Hall of Fame.

Stuffed and placed in the Lobby…

  62. CTBlueshirt on

I think Mogilny has a shot, more games played and points than Bure, one of only 3 Russians with a 1000 points (and I think somewhere in the top 10 of European born scorers). A member of the first generation of Russian players to play essentially all of their professional careers in the NHL.

  63. CTBlueshirt on

Recchi might get hit with the “compiler” label, some might say his stats looked better because of how long he played. Same with Dave Andreychuk.

  64. Doodie Machetto on

If Mogilny gets in, it’s for historical value. While he has more games and points than Bure, Bure was the most prolific goal scorer in the league for about 5 years. That his knees gave out on him shouldn’t count against him. I dare say that he remains the most prolific Russian NHL goal scorer in history (although Ovechkin and Kovalchuk make good arguments for themselves).

  65. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

Actually Sather is in the Hall of Fame..inducted in 1997

He won 5 cups, and was one of the best coaches of all time

I once saw him win a fight when he was a Ranger (live)

  66. Doodie Machetto on

I think Andreychuk and Recchi get in. Interesting fact about Andreychuk. He is the all-time NHL leader of PP goals with 274.

  67. CTBlueshirt on

If they let Cam Neely and Mike Bossy in despite shortened careers due to injuries, that should help with Bure’s case.

  68. sorry Doodieheadmachetto if you are part of the 500 goal club you deserve consideration.

and no you don’t have to be a winner to be in the HOF.

  69. Mannyfried on

Latona: Lunch today was a beautiful blend of whole grain pasta (a rottini) some feta cheese, cherry tomatoes and cumin flavored chick peas. It was actually rather delightful.

  70. agree with ORR.

trading for jeff carter he would be a disaster in new york plus he has 11 years left on his deal. thanks but no thanks

  71. Carter for 11 years at just over $5 mill is better than what Richards is going to want for 7 years, IMHO…Prust sayin’

  72. I wonder if Anaheim would be interested in dealing Getzlaf. Getzlaf has 2 years left on his deal, and i assume they wouldn’t want to move Bobby Ryan, and I would never pay whatever they are asking for Corey Perry coming off the season he had.

  73. “Among active (but nearing retirement) or the recently retired players I’d say Lidstrom and Brodeur are locks, Shanahan and Selanne too. Jagr should get in, so should Sakic.
I do wonder if all 3 of Fedorov, Mogilny and Bure get in.”

    French pansy
Someone said he’s a Canadian kid, but looks like a Euro name to me. Pansy.
    Three Communist pansies

Next in the Hall should be Darcy Tucker, Wade Belak and that Douglas Murray kid that somebody mentioned. Good, honest Canadian boys.

  74. an interesting history discussion but
    back to Werek:

there’s this which basically says that Werek wasn’t doing what the organization wanted him to do
believe i read somewhere last night
they would have had to sign Werek this year
but they don’t have to sign Lindberg til next year

don’t know if holding on to that chunk of change is something needed
for all the RFA signings and UFA signings this summer or what….
    in regards to that
i think sather will be acquiring — ufa signing or trade — 2 or 3 players

  75. I doubt they’d even consider trading him. Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan. BOOM! I’m sure they can afford all three. They have a lot of Vets on that team, Koivu, Blake, Lydman, Marchant, Visnovski, Beauchemin. Get rid of some of them, and spread the cash around, and play some kids.

Although, I know nothing of their prospects, but I’m sure some of them could fill in nicely on the 3rd-4th lines, and 3rd pair D spot.

Also, there’s Selanne who could retire. But, I hope Selanne re-signs. The guy still has it.

  76. Sounds delicious, manny.

I had English Muffin Pizzas, a family recipe. Basically, Thomas English Muffins, Don Pepinos Pizza Sauce, and American Cheese. Impeccable.

  77. Mannyfried on

That sounds GREAT Latona. I used to love making pizza on English Muffins when I was a kid. Haven’t done it in years. You have inspired my dinner choice!

  81. pinkos need to go. seriously. if you don’t like this country please move to France. where all those government workers and jobless morons are attacking banks, airports, gas stations, etc.

…because those lazy jerks have to work 1 more day a year.

isn’t this concept funny however. “anarchists” creating anarchy for more government. LOL

Orr , you go through chicks like nobody else …Shara is “old news” but nobody screams like her!! I still like her.

Terry Crisp , Nashville is NOT a hockey market. Half those fans only know ICE from buying cubes of it for thier drinks.

I wish gabby dominated as well. I like the draft a lot as well. Who do you think we take in the first round?

  111. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Just win ,baby !!!"...says Greg L. on

Haha Piggins misses an open net….figures.

Upton’s hot, but she’s no Sally.

  113. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " FOURR !!!"...says Greg L. on

Wicky , Im not following the draftees so its hard to tell whom I want. I look at it this way , We get called up to the podium and annouce our new pick…I embrace that player as one of my own kids . Kids like Lundmark and Brendel has really soured my out look on believing in real players. Pavel Brendel was a No miss prospect ..then wham , hes a dud. Mike York was an interesting pick , he was one whale of a player then we traded him to Edm… Its funny , what makes a player a Hugh Jessewoman to some unknown who makes it relly big. Usually young kids couldnt make the Rangers cuz over price vets had to make up most of the roster and now it the opposite. It seems everytime we buy a player he turn out to be a Kovalchoke. We have the money ,Tradition, sold out tickets , and tons of history..losing history but yet we overall have a winning record. We need to make a splash in this draft and keep plugging away …the hard way . Maybe just maybe one day we will draft our star untill then we have to cheer on our Dubinskys and callahans.

Don’t let Sather Draft, Don’t let Sather sign UFA’s. Don’t let Sather trade flubs for scrubs. Don’t let Sather keep ruining the Rangers.

  115. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " FOURR !!!"...says Greg L. on

Olga , you have no choice what Sather does. You are fighting a losing battle. Did you see the joke that “fire Sather” rally was. That guy with the big mouth who had a camera walked around and showed us how stuiped it was. Thats when we first saw CCCP. You see Sather is one of those love him hate him guys and im sorry to see you hate him. You ranting on day after day about how we should get rid of this guy is really a waist of time. You are fully allowed to display you hatred , fine…but realize this , your fighting a fight you will never win. Only way Sather steps down is when Messier takes over . You even hate that happening. You have this hate on for management as you told us of your dipleasures with Chicago’s old ownership. You need to channel that hatered into a positive because I know you can actually make a difference once you realize us fans are the only ones you are hurting , sather could give a ratzz azz.

  116. Olga Folkyerself on

So you support someone who “gives a ratzz azz” about the Rangers? I’m not fighting a losing battle, someday Sather will be gone. Until then, Rangers will never, I repeat, never, be a contender. Messier will not change a thing, if Sather remains as President.

    Sather has GOT to go….

  117. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " FOURR !!!"...says Greg L. on

I do not support Sather , I myself realize he is in the hall of fame as a builder. You are making a mockery of all he has done. All im saying is Sather is a Sith lord and even the powers of a Jedi can not take him down. He is a powerfull man and the mere Olga will never even scratch his legacy nor tarnish his image . Like I said Sather could give a ratzz azz.

  118. Just did some research on Brad Richards. Not about his on-the-ice activity, but rather, about his off-the-ice happenings. And man, does he seem like an exceptional human being. Just reading about some of the things he willingly and gladly does made me think. I would look into his philanthropic activities sometime; hockey players continue to be the shining stars “goodness” in the wide world of sports.

Now, that doesn’t mean we should sign Richards. But, it also doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. We have plenty of time to debate this over the coming weeks.

  119. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Just win ,baby !!!"...says Greg L. on

    Apparently, I struck a chord there…

If you want to see some great charity from a pro athlete, look into the work done by Albert Pujols. He truly is a Prince amongst men.

  121. This is gonna seem outta the blue, considering my lack in invovlement recently, but I just wanted to let you guys and gals here know how much I love you and love this place. It’s the one place I go to for Rangers talk and everyday never fails to amuse, amaze or befuddle me. You are all truly exceptional people and I’m honored to be able to interact with you and talk about anything and everything under the sun.

  122. Actually it was more than one reason why they lost the war, but it was in fact Hitler himself who took over the strategic conduct of the war. Yes
Russia invasion was idiotic, but remember the Nazis came out with that superb 1st jet fighter the ME 263 that savaged the American bomber formations but arrived too late in the war. But it was Hitler’s decision to use it as a bomber to punish the Brits that was the problem. Too few too late and too stupid.( But also remember, they were only about 6 months from acquiring the A bomb). God was with us.)

It wasn’t Hitler who called the Americans the sleeping giant, it was admiral Yamamoto the Pearl Harbor attack mastermind, who said it.

He never wanted to attack America but had no choice…in fact the war hawks in Japan tried to assassinate him for his “cowardice”, but naval buddies sent him to sea to save his life. He was the architect of the PH attack, but he did it with grave misgivings. He had been all thru America as a student and hitchhiked all over the country. Was also a sharp poker player. He saw our industrial capacity and got to know Americans
as a people and he warned his colleagues in Japan to not do this, for they were greatly underestimating Americans. He warned them, that he would run wild for 6 months, but after that when American industrial might kicked in, he guaranteed nothing, And was he right…6 months later, the Doolittle raid bombing Tokyo and Midway, where he lost all four of his great carriers in one afternoon. It was all downhill after that.

  123. btw

With all due respect for my Italian buddies the Italian rank and file soldiers had no stomach for this battle, and not because they were cowards. They hated the Germans. But one humorous event occurred during the desert campaign against Rommel. The Italians were flamboyant and they had one unit that wore large sombreros with great big plumes in the hats. Rommel had detached them to one area against the Brits, to guard his flank, and he was a bit concerned when he’d hear no reports from them for some while, so he sent a scout out to see how they were doing, and when he got there, the field was littered with piles of those fancy sombreros, but no Italian troops – they had all surrendered to the Aussies.

  124. In don’t know how many of you folks are into reading, but there is one book that is dynamite, and reads like a novel but it is all true. It is a depiction of an event that happened just prior to the Normandy invasion when the allies wanted to assist the french guerillas, who sabotaged much of German activity behind the lines. No Hollywood producer could have come up with the cast of real life characters that were behind this. Great book. It’s available in Amazon

Title: “And the Walls came Tumbling Down.”

(many books carry this title, but this one had Jack Fisher as the author. It’s hard to put down.)
