Sharks-Wings in review, by guest blogger Eddie, Eddie, Eddie

And I just wanted to say that it made me happy that that piece of cooke Carcillo helped cost his team a game and a series with an extremely dumb penalty.

This, from Eddie, Eddie, Eddie:

Hockey Town. Original six. Storied franchise. Long History. Many great players have played for the Red Wings. And for the last 20 years, the Wings have been good, really good. I am happy for their fans. Detroit needs whatever ray of hope peeks thru as the city has fallen on tough times. I remember hearing houses going for $100. Almost like the game Monopoly. Baltic and Mediterranean clearly an upward move. I extend my sincerest apologies to my Motor City brothers and sisters. Although I picked them to win the cup after the Rangers were eliminated, perhaps their tremendous run has waned and is approaching its twilight. For one, this incredibly experienced team is aged. Bertuzzi is 36 years old, Cleary 32, Datsyuk 32, Draper 39, Franzen 31, Modano 40, Salei 36, and Nick Lidstrom is 41. Funny thing about Lidstrom, I can imagine MDZ telling his grandchildren “hey kids – see that guy…I played against him.” His second goal, the teams’ third, was completely  – not adismal.

For another, the San Jose Sharks are byfuglien seriously good. To say the Sharks never give up is akin to saying the sun rises in the east, we don’t get enough Skid updates, and carcillo is a piece of cooke.

Sidebar: I know it’s not right, but when carcillo took that shot in the ankle, I literally (to use an overused word) lol’ed.

Sharks are an easy team for their fans to love.  They will not give up.  They are like Glen Close in that bathtub scene in Fatal Attraction where she holds her breath for about an hour. Except Glen Close ultimately lost. The Sharks are still up 3-1 after losing last night 4-3 in a terrific game.   When they fall behind, they don’t panic and they fight like H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks.  The Rangers might have onions, but the Sharks have a lot of heart.

This is the fifth time in their history these teams have met in the playoffs, each winning twice. Sharks have a 3-1 lead after losing last night 4-3 in a terrific game.

Before I start, let’s silently give thanks to the Lord of Hockey. The Flyers were swept. Interesting fourth line the Flyers used – as their three goalies were on ice at the same time moving in and out of the crease like moths hovering around a flame. With that, here we go:

1) The Flyers were swept. I like the sound of that. I hate that team. Talk about a death spiral. Watching them lose almost makes up for the Rangers losing. That Game 4 still makes me sad.

2) Nick Lidstrom = Monster. How can you not admire thus guy? What a talent! From interviews he comes across as a great guy. Down to earth and mellow.

3) JR did a nice job pointing out that Cleary (or was it Draper) was offside on Bertuzzi’s spin-a-rama backhand .

4) Detroit buzzed like angry hornets in that first period with relentless pressure.  The Sharks looked slow and that is rare sight these playoffs.

5) The way both teams move the puck out of their zone is impressive. The first 2-3 passes are short, crisp, and non-hurried. Good teams do not turn the puck over. Good teams pass vertically. When two good teams are playing, there is a beautiful ebb and flow to the game. The Sharks and Wings are ballet like. There isn’t as much grinding and play down low. Quite the contrast to the Rangers.

6) Dan Boyle should have gone off for goalie interference on the Wings second goal. Blown call. Adismal

7) Speaking of goalies, there is an interesting Hollywood name connection between Antie Em, of Wizard of Oz fame and Moe Howard, who centered The Three Stooges Line, with Larry and Curly on the wings. Wooob wooob wooob wooob.

8) Joe Pavelski = mini monster. I like his spirit.

9) Ryan Clowe = tough dude. I would love to have this guy on the Rangers. Total character guy, good skill, and menacing right hand.

10) The Sharks play such a simple game. Team oriented hockey. They play it the right way. No real superstars. Great work ethic. Living out here, I see them enough and their play is so consistent and steady. Good coaching.

11) Good coaching on the other bench too. Coach Babcock never seems flustered and you can tell that he is passionate.

12) Have you ever seen so many comebacks collectively? No lead is safe. Bizarre. Never say Die isn’t just the name of a Bond movie

13) Did I mention that the Filthy Flyers were swept by the Bruins.  Carcillo hobbled off from getting hit in the ankle.  Does that make me a bad person for feeling good about that?  Ah Byfugal it.  Who cares?  Not me.

14) Sharks vs. Vancouver will be very interesting.  Detroit/Vancouver could be interesting too.  I’m not sure which I’m hoping for at this point in time.  This series is not over.  The Wings are too experienced, and too talented to be counted out.  They know it’s just one shift, one period, one game at a time.

15) My wife loves the Sharks (as much as she is capable of loving a sports team).

16) Carp, this is a great site.  I thank you for allowing me to spew.  I mean Blog.

17) Let’s go Rangers.

18) Lastly and most importantly, the Flyers were swept.

  1. I have seen most of the Detroit-San Jose series and I’ve always admired the way the Red Wings play. However, it appears that their time has come. Even in losing last night the Sharks looked like the much better team for the last two periods.

I don’t think I’ve seen a Sharks game this season before now and the thing that impresses me the most is the play of Danny Heatley. He’s more physical than I ever figured he would be and he kills penalties. Oh, the guy can score too. I’ve always known him as a scorer and he looks to be a well rounded player now.

  2. I agree, CCC, but the only issue the Sharks have are those amazing Detroit surges. I mean, think about it, the two surges they had in the game (one of which lasted almost an entire period), they scored four goals. San Jose was the better team for the other 35 minutes but they still lost. It’s hard to stop Detroit when they’re on such a roll, but San Jose just has to weather the storm better than they did last night.

I’ll be the first to admit that I am a huge denis leary fan and as much as I love denis leary I hate michael moore even more. that is why this is hilarious to me from twitter..

    denisleary Denis Leary
Michael Moore thinks we should have captured Bin Laden. Yeah – like he was a fuggin (I changed the previous word for the blog’s sake) butterfly.

    Morning ILB and all!!

hope you landed an big one, and yes, I’m much larger in person (lol)!

Yes, I can’t remember why I wasn’t smiling. It was one of three reasons…….So many laurels from the bag lady, something LW had posted (I kid, I kid), or the serious lack of a crease clearing D man!!

Agree on #8 – Pavelski is good stuff.

But I will never forget the Olympics last year when whoever the commentators were said something along the lines of “Pavelski! Have you ever heard of anyone being drafted 205th and being this good?!” To which I replied (at my TV), “Why yes, I have. His name starts with Hen and ends with qvist, and I think he plays for the Rangers.”

haven’t said this in a while, but go nucks!!

    Great review, Eddie!

Hey…did youse guys hear that the Flyers were swept?

On my way to Churchill Downs…wish me luck!

  9. Great review, Eddie. You forgot to mention- the Flyers were swept.

I, too, believe the Sharks will win the next game. And I think Vancouver will come out if the West. Here is hoping for Vancouver- TB finals.

I hope the wings can pull off another win on Sunday. The enfolding drama resulting from a team down 3-0 clawing it’s way back into the series is better than anything Hollywood produces. The sharks are tough tho. This has been an unusal playoff season for me. Normally, once the rangers are out, I am too depressed to watch many games. This year, however, I haven’t missed many games at all.

Carp – don’t you think Peter lavatory’s use and misuse of his goalies has the potential to ruin all 3 from a confidence perspective. I almost – ALMOST – feel bad that trio of sieves.

  12. Yeah, Carp. I’m sending you some Kleenex. I’m sure you ran out of your own supply.

  13. TonyAZ

are you an amateur or professional photographer??

either way, i could use your opinion on a thing or two.

i take photos as well……mainly concerts.

    email me at

(or if anyone has his email, send it along with his blessings, of course,
or let him know about this)

  14. Jpg- he is a professional photographer. His name on the blog is linked to his studio. You can email him using his site.

  15. Man, there is way more Sharks love than I thought here. Logan Couture, Ryan Clowe, and Joe Pavelski are guys that I like but Joe Thorton is on the team, right? (17 goals and 74 points in 101 playoff games, -24 , that joe thorton)And I’m pretty sure he’s Captain. It’s impossibel to root for star players who don’t show up in big games. And I’ve disliked Danny Heatly after his Ottawa problem. And when you add too many important pieces via trades or free agency (they got Dan Boyle too) and those pieces are those kind of players (whiny, and no shows in important games=Bad Karma. I can only root against that team

. The coach of the Sharks when speaking of Lidstrom the other night (game 4, 2 goals) said something like “He is the Captain, that’s what Captains do.” No body else mentioned it but I read it as “Joe Thorton you better do the same thing”. That was a direct call to his Captain.

  16. Nice interview Stepan.

Im so glad he is in this tournament, awesome experience builder.

  17. Thorts has done pretty good in the playoffs. He won the series against LA, set up the OT game winner the other night. He has 2 goals, 7 assists I think.

A lot of people seem to think he’s a goal scorer, but has never really been his game. He only surpassed the 30 goal mark twice in his career, I think. He’s a playmaker, and that’s always been his game. His job is to make the people around him better.

Come to think of it, I don’t think he’s ever scored more than three goals in his playoffs career.

So, I don’t think McLellan was calling him out.

  18. I thought Thorton has been very good in the playoffs this year. He’s been physical, he is taking the most important face-offs and has been setting up and scoring some big goals too…

Congratulations to the 2011 Eastern Conference Champions Boston Bruins. The 37 years of age Timothy James Thomas, Jr. continues to outshine Henrik Lundquist.

NYR fan – you like the ponies eh?….Great statistical analysis packed into the Racing form. The best correlation I ever saw was when Charlie Wittengham was the trainer and the Shoe was the jock – I made a lot of money in the 80’s on that duo….

As Ranger fans, we must root for TB. We owe an enormous debt to TB for beating the Canes in game 82…That and Milbury was a Bruin. Milbury will always be adismal.

  22. eddie eddie eddie on

sally got my vote…..she must be on some serious juice to get a head of hair like that on her face…..she will need a weed wacker to lose it…..she looks a lil older with it too…..I would suggest she stay clean shaven…much cuter..

  23. eddie eddie eddie on

i sure hope that the way the flyers imploded carries over into next season….wouldnt it be a hoot if they actually missed the playoffs….one can dream…

  27. Anybody see that new video of Bin Laden watching TV?? If you look closely, you can see he’s watching a compilation of Prust fights. Apparently he was trying to learn how to defend himself against much tougher people, but he didn’t pay enough attention. Oh well!

i am ok with salami bin laden taking a couple of bullits to the eye socket…the ultimate piece of byfuglien carcillo…

  31. I wouldn’t even want to insult Carcillo by using his name in reference to that pile of garbage with which we polluted the sea last week.

  32. Good afternoon, poll-leader Sally! We discussed you the other day, and yesterday we all congratulated you, and today apparently a lot of people are voting for you. Must be having some week, huh, kid?
