NY Ranger Sean Avery Joins HRC’s “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign”

The NHL Star Supports Equality for All New Yorkers

NEW YORK – New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery has teamed up with the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – in a new video for its “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign.  In the video, Avery explains, “I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated, and that applies to marriage.”  The campaign, which raises the public profile of marriage equality in New York, can be viewed online at www.hrc.org/NY4marriage.

“Sean Avery knows what it means to be a leader – on and off the ice,” said HRC Senior New York Strategist Brian Ellner.  “As the first professional athlete in the state to publically support marriage equality, his voice is sure to resonate. Like a majority of New Yorkers, he believes in the freedom of all loving, committed couples to marry.”

A recent poll released by the Siena Research Institute shows public opinion continues to trend toward marriage equality in New York State with a record high of 58 percent support and a record low of 36 percent opposition.

Sean Avery is currently in his fifth season with the New York Rangers and helped take the team to the 2011 playoffs.

The New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign is centered on video testimonials from New Yorkers who support the right of same-sex couples to marry. To date, HRC has released videos from Sean Avery, Julianna Margulies, Bill T. Jones, Sam Waterston, Christopher Meloni, Mario Batali, David Chang, Tom Colicchio, Lucy Liu, Bill Bratton and Rikki Klieman, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Former New York City Mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins, Russell Simmons, Mark and Sunrise Ruffalo, John Slattery, Joan Rivers, Barbara Bush, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Fran Drescher, Moby, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Julianne Moore and Kenneth Cole – with more to follow in the coming weeks.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

  1. Good for Avery.

“I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated”

I got a little chuckle out of that. I can just see people coming out of nowhere, and smacking his leg with a big stick, and running away. Haha!

    Good evening, Carp! Winning!

Yay Aves! This makes me happy to see. I also LOL’ed at the “I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated” part…

  3. Avery is a good guy despite what those crybabies who can’t handle some creative smack talk say. He’s always visiting hospitals low-key and taking pictures with fans. Sticks up for his teammates!

lol @ reminding people to vote for the beard “competition”.

  4. is this the extra curriculum that is required to work in fashion? :P

    i kid i kid! good for Sean…

can he also speak to Bloomberg on behalf of middle-class families and ask Bloomberg not to cut taxes for the rich? :)

    Avery is gay

Equality for all. Discrimination of any kind is wrong. The only hatred any of us should feel should be focused on the cookes, carcillos, hartnells, and all things flyer, pen, cap, devil, and islander.

  7. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I see photography as a way of recording events and as a beautiful art form.

  8. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Tony – the ny times has that one historical shot of honest Abe… Never knee it was you that took it….impressive.

  9. eddie eddie eddie on

Tony – what are your thoughts regarding the incredible advancements in the camera/lens technology and its effect on the art form?

  10. Good for Sean!

Eddie, Tony took pictures of Chris Chelios’ birth. That’s how long he’s been doing it…

  11. Eddie, I’m old school but I do appreciate as art what’s being done digitally. But I love what photographers can do with their vision & cameras.

  12. eddie eddie eddie on

Chris Chelios grew up in San Diego, CA…the hot bed for NHL super stars….Name me a great player that isnt from SD…

  13. eddie eddie eddie on

tony – i hear you…it seems to me, and I am completely ignorant, that the art form isnt as pure with all of this digitalization…but what do i know….

  14. eddie eddie eddie on

I used to think that photo-ing was aim and shoot and hope for a good turn out….a lot more bloody to it – it turns out…

  15. billybleedsblue on

Years ago, it could take hours to do a good dodge and burn in the lab with chemicals…nowadays, it’s just a few “clicks” away, and just about everyone has access to these techniques. Ahh, the age of digital technology. Let’s go Rangers?

  16. eddie eddie eddie on

goodness gracious…..NHL network just mentioned via its scroll, that the flyers lost their series to the bruins 4-0……Why didnt someone tell me?

  17. eddie eddie eddie on

billy – dodge and burn?…..sounds like iceman talking to woodman…

  18. billybleedsblue on

Eddie, lightening and darkening specific areas of a photograph by manipulating the exposure using chemicals… and, nice job on the write-up… did you really revert to Fatal Attraction? That was pretty funny.

  25. eddie eddie eddie on

when driving near schools, watch for little children darting into the street…as there could be a ball folowing….

  26. And if you want to make it the default media player, try this….

Go to menu Tools > Preferences. In interface settings look for file associations and press the “Association Setup” button. Then check each box.

  27. Kesler is killing them this series.

I just want them to end it tonight. I can’t see the Preds beating them three straight. Just end it now, and start the Conference Final once the Sharks take care of the Wings

  28. eddie eddie eddie on

JR says ryan kesler is a monster…..that’s another $1.50 ricardo…

Dr. Carp: “Help is on the way!”

And then Eddie Eddie Eddie and CCCP show up wearing scrubs. Somehow though, no matter what the injury, the treatment always involves several quick stitches allowing the patient to not miss any shifts, and maniacal laughter.

  38. Doodie Machetto on

    Eddie, great post today.

Avery is a good guy off the ice. Such a juxtaposition of his on-ice behaior.

    Sick goal by Preds there.

Anyone have a link for the Pacquiao fight?

  39. billybleedsblue on

Carp, your link to the video reads properly, but it’s actually linked to your internal Gannet email…you might want to change that.

  40. eddie eddie eddie on

you have to admit, it looks like JR sneaks a belt or two in during commercial breaks…he appears to have trouble standing still and upright, in all assets of his commentary

  41. eddie eddie eddie on

thx doodie…and again thx to ricardo for allowing me and the other 2 eddies the opportunity…

  42. eddie eddie eddie on

i havent looked at that link yet, but I am at my PC…i use my Mac laptop for videos..will look later…

  43. billybleedsblue on

And yes, I watched the Avery video. Anyone wondering how serious he is about being an advocate for gay rights can stop wondering now. Good for him.

  47. Olga Folkyerself on

Maybe I’m shooting craps, but I’ll take a flyer that it won’t happen…

  48. Doodie Machetto on

It looked like the Green Men were trying to “Wisniewski” the penalized player.

  49. Doodie Machetto on

I mean, the Sedins haven’t been scoring either, but at least I notice when they are on the ice.

  50. billybleedsblue on

Yea Doodie, so much for my “Flyers in 5” and my Lightning in 6 wasn’t exactly correct either lol. Not to mention, I picked the Wings to win it all in the poll. Gotta love playoff hockey.

  51. Doodie Machetto on

At what point does Trotz move Weber and Suter to Kesler instead of the Sedins?

Alternatively, can he split them and have Weber face the Sedins with Suter on Kesler?

  52. iDoodie machetto on

Regardless of how the series finishes, the Predators have proved that they are for real as a franchise.

  53. eddie eddie eddie on

carp – yes the link and the video work…its short, but you gotta love #16’s cool glasses…

  54. NOw let’s get real here. The Predators gave every evidence of becoming the next Wild Bunch of old. they truly kept up an awesome display of hurt being applied to all venturing anywhere near their goal tender. And their legs never stopped grinding…no gliders here. It seemed to me that the Nucks were awed by the sheer ferocity of the Preds defenders, and I don;t mean just the D men. Everybody dished it out. This is one mean hard nosed team, who play full bore team attack and team punishing hockey. Phew.

  55. I hope y’all don;t get annoyed by the numerous questions that I ask, but there is little that I can offer in the way of inside technical performance and stats , because I wouldn’t know what I was talking about. I am too far from New York, and don’t have you folks inside data and information.

All that I know is my historical references wherein I can compare what I see on the ice now, with what I used to see years ago, when all of the greats of that era performed.

So now I have another question….
    Paul Mara Beard contest………
how did it get started, and does Mara know that he’s the poster boy for your activity?

  56. billybleedsblue on

fran, I believe Mara was chosen for his own awesome beard, and the title of the contest is an homage to said beard. The “bi-annual” part is a dig at the Rangers inability to make the playoffs every year. Someone else may be able to expound on this in further detail, but that’s the short of it, me thinks.

  57. Reginald Dunlop on

Dang……that guy on versus just keeps proving how little he knows about hockey……..don’t agree with Jer-O-ME too much but this time on the money…….Kessler is NO Messier……not half as tough and actually is a weasel…….watch all the little cheap shots and don’t ever remember Mess showing another player, let alone a whole team, up…………Kessler is the perfect example why the INSTIGATOR penalty should be dropped……..Why isn’t CARP in that famous list of NY’ers???????
