Watch the game!

This is why I don’t like NBC and Versus:

1) There’s a skirmish on front of the Tampa net. Jason Arnott is mad and about to hand out a facial, or at least a glove to the mug, and Versus quickly goes to a closeup of Alex Ovechkin, then a closeup of the back of Dwayne Roloson? WTB? Then shows a replay of the scrum, and cuts it off before Arnott delivers (or doesn’t deliver, how the heck should we know) the glove. Why? Why!?

2) Pavel Datsyuk sweeps a puck off the goal line and ices it, bailing out Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard. Great play. Classic. NBC shows us, like, a gazillion replays. What NBC doesn’t bother to show us, or tell us, while glorifying Datsyuk and his Selke Trophy rep, is that Datsyuk’s awful defensive play, a lost battle and then allowing the San Jose player, Big Douglas Murray, to walk out of the corner unchecked, is what caused the puck on the goal line in the first place. What, they didn’t have enough analysts or cameras at the game?

3) Martin St. Louis scores a fluke goal on a pass intended for Vincent Lecavalier on the other side of the net which never got there, instead deflecting into the net off the skate of Washington’s Mike Green. Oh, what bad luck, Versus tells us. Poor Mike Green. What Versus doesn’t bother to tell us is that had the puck not hit Green’s skate, it goes directly to Lecavalier, a lefty shot at the right post, all alone. In other words, a slam dunk. What Versus doesn’t tell us is that, had Green actually been checking his man, Lecavalier, his skate would have been nowhere near the blue. And it wouldn’t have been a goal. Poor Mike Green. I guess Versus didn’t have enough analysts, either.

4) And how god-awful are the interviews before games, on the bench, and immediately after games? Each analyst starts with a long-winded statement … “Joe, your team fought through a hard seven-game series and had very little rest, and still came out hard tonight …” then a dumb question. C’mon. Get somebody in there who knows how to ask a question.

5) How about the promo in which the announcer terribly mispronounces “Sedin?” … I mean, you can’t do that. You just can’t.

Though I must say, I have no problem listening to Doc Emrick (true professional) or Dave Strader or even John Forslund (if he could lose the “cleared in” Thorne-ism; a cleared puck comes out of the defensive zone, not into the offensive zone).

Oh, and Douglas Murray=Monster. Just sayin’.

About Author

  1. Forslund is also extremely keen to say that the goalie “melts it down” when he means “freezes it” which is the complete opposite. Bring back Beninati!

  2. So, other than that Carp, how’d you enjoy the game?

I like Forslund. He’s very knowledgeable. But, the “melts it down” always hit me as being pretty goofy.

  3. Jlone2Bubblehead on

I am really enjying the Tampa series. I think they will represent the East.

  4. MannyFried on

Carp: Re: #1: RIDICULOUS. They were doing that crap all night. They always cut away from Scrums and I see the Zebras headed over and it makes me anxious! Then Doc Emirick says something about “take fighting/hitting out of the game and those red seats will be red but they won’t be filled with people!” Consistency people. You know we want to see it.

Go Lightning. Honestly. This is so cool what they are doing through injuries and with the old dude in net.

  5. I love Doc Emrick too.

OMG! I’ve been jonesing for some ‘Defending the Core!” …NOT! BWHAAHHAHAHAAAA! :)

  6. Doodie Machetto on

All coaches should take a page from Torts’ book and respond to the stupid question with “That’s a stupid question” and then end the interview.

  7. Doodie Machetto on

I don’t love Doc Emrick, the voice and the cliches are tiresome. But I respect him and would take him over 75% of local guys because he is such a professional. Nobody is more prepared than he is.

  8. MannyFried on

I do NOT love Doc Emirick either. With you Doodie. I get annoyed hearing the term “Canceled out” 100 times a period. Also, he is like a free association the entire game. Just going on and on and thinking out loud throughout the play. He, like most announcers, talks too much.

  9. billybleedsblue on

LW3H by “highly serious run down of the NHL awards contenders…” did you really mean “i was high and did a seriously funny run down of the NHL awards contenders…” ? At any rate, it was funny, seriously.

Carp, I imagine that come playoffs, the already lacking producer(s) at versus are replaced on demand by higher-up and even more inept producer(s) who just want to work the playoffs, but really have no clue about the game at all. Is it too much to ask to have somebody with some hockey savvy in the control room?

I heard the PRUST was the key man in getting salami bin laden. Even with arm in a sling, the one armed super hero captured and destroyed the ultimate in evil. Those last few minutes of salami’s life, subjected to the PRUST glare probably caused salami’s heart to explode in fear.

  13. LOL! They are both adismal, Eddie…

    Go America!!! GO USA!!

I would have loved to see MZA in this game…too bad he’s hurt!

  14. Good morning, Sally! Finished?

Great job on the trophy analysis, LW. Should I put your blog in our blogroll —-> ?

  15. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Why isn’t Dave Maloney in a national Tv booth? He is informative, crystal clear, explains things easily and simply, and he is concise.

  16. Eddie the reasons why he should be in the booth you are probably also the reasons he is not in the booth.

  17. Doodie Machetto on

McDonagh just embarrassed as part of defending 1 on 3. He took a hooking penalty and the guy still got the shot off.

  18. Its hard to watch this at work and try to hide the game behind a few spreadsheets at the same time.

  19. I can’t watch because my company blocks streams…

Is Tor Vikingstad playing for Norway? Love that guy’s name!!!

  20. I love these two:

    Martin St. Louis (Tampa Bay)

*Put the team on his shoulders and carried them, the team promising to return the favour during a planned off-season trip to Disneyland.

I just hope that Marty is tall enough to go on rides at Disneyland! lol

    Shea Weber (Nashville)
*First Norris Trophy nomination for a player with an Irish name since Sandis O’Zolinsh in 1997.

you should definitely add LW’s blog to the blogroll!

  21. I am having the same issue Tomb. Stupid cubicles….wish I could get a promotion so I have an office. Maybe I should go get this on one of the tv’s in our office.

  22. Doodie Machetto on

My boss is going to go play golf today, but he’s leaving right after the game ends, so no help there.

  23. oh well. I’m doing it fine so far. Too bad the game is a stinker. Montoya should’ve had the first one easy.

  24. LW, I enjoyed your article on injuries and man-games lost in relation to the salary cap cost…

    Interesting stuff, mate….

  25. You’re right NYR. I am not trying to complain and make it worse for you!

  26. Youse guys are lucky you can watch the game! I want to see too, but we can’t here at work. All streams are blocked!!

  27. I’ll tell you how simple minded these people are who run the NHL broadcasting. Instead of these artificial and cliche ridden mopes for pbp and color analysis, they constently overlook one of the best and probably THE best, broadcasters in the game. Chuck Kaiten.

Those criticisisms of the TV work by Versus has never changed since their onset. They still have cameras wandering around to irrelevant movement while ignoring the key action and items of interest to the public that can be found. They’re all amateurs and they display it in every game, and it is reinforced when the action is hot and heavy. But don’t lets let the REFS off without a good bye see ya later ( I hope not). there were two separate occasions when St Louis got high sticked in the face and it was as plain as er,…”the noses on their faces”….no call…by any ref! What could they have been looking at?

But I gotta tell ya, this has been the most fun series to watch in my memory without the Rangers, that I’ve seen. There are enough Ranger enemy teams here to cover the league, and it’s kinda fun to be able to root against them, even if TEOMEIMF.

Now get a belly full of that “acronym”

  28. CTBlue & Carp. merveilluex…and the ink wasn’t dry before you nailed it.

I’ll admit, rooting for the black and gold is a bit off putting to me, but seeing who the opponents, are…I can swallow my pride.

I thought that the Bolts were notably faster as a team than the Caps, but give the Caps credit where it is due……they didn’t quit, and they looked like they might have kept OV out there a bit too long at times, but I really enjoy watching him go into that Quasimodo crouch when he delivers. It’s unique, and amusing to behold. He does however more than earn his keep…he is the most potent attack force that they have, and his Viking like attack persona really brings out
the latent animalism in his team mates. Those early Scandinavian marauders became berserkers ( their word) when they went a-Viking, and that’s what he brings to the game.

This series will not be won until the Bolts manage to contain him.

  29. CTBlueshirt on

Well from his playoff stats it doesn’t really look like anyone’s been able to fully contain Ovechkin, but if nobody else on his team steps up then the Caps will lose regardless of what Ovechkin does. Arnott has probably been their 2nd best forward. Most of Semin’s goals were pretty much “gimmes” (his OT winner, his goal that started the comeback in game 4, his 2 on 1 in game 5, his goal off an awful turnover in game 1 vs TB), Nicklas Backstrom has done next to nothing (2 assists in 7 games). The big difference for Tampa is that they have the weapons to fire back whereas the Rangers did not.

  30. Doodie Machetto on

Tie would be a bad result. It would leave the US likely needing a result against Sweden to advance.

  31. 1. The numbskull that put someone in that stupid booth between the benches should be sent to hockey hell. I don’t want any coach’s concentration broken with their dumb questions. Doesn’t matter the sport. Unfortunately, all sports do it now.

    2. Dave Maloney continues to grow, and Eddie, I couldn’t have said it better.

  32. As Rangers fans, we can only pray that we one day have a power play like Tampa…

  33. Doodie Machetto on

Stepan with a great set up on the PP. From the left circle he crept in and drilled Craig Smith’s stick with a hard pass that deflected in. Smith didn’t have to do anything but keep his stick on the ice.

Norway coming apart at the seams now. Another penalty with less than 2 minutes.

  34. Doodie Machetto on

USA wins 4-2! Clinched the next round. A Sweden loss today or a tie or better against Sweden on Wednesday and USA wins the group.

  35. Anyone know where and when tickets to the Rangers game in Prague will be available???

  36. Tell me about it NYR. Their PP is so lethal. So many shooters you have to respect and then St. Louis who can make a play. Zuccarello should be watching this!

  37. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

With this talk of Bin Laden, it’s too bad Chris kreider’s first name isn’t Al.

Itsabouthockey – the captain, Dave maloney, is must hear/see TV. I love his insights and analysis. Never one to sugarcoat anything… He is a rare breed.

  39. Maloney = Best color commentator in the business…Versus and NBC are stupid not to use him…

Kenny Albert = Best play-by-play guy in the business…

    ’nuff said…

  40. Stepan may not be a punishing hitter, but the kid is tough. He takes some pretty big hits but always bounces back.

Kreider with a sweet assist on first goal.
McD with the secondary assist on goal #2 – under some pressure at the point, he found the open man along the boards, rather than just dumping the puck
Stepon with the assist on the last goal.

  41. Carp-
I really agree with #1, but I notice the same problem on MSG broadcasts. You’ll see a scrum starting at the end of a play and the camera goes to Torts on the bench, or something like that. I notice that the beginnings of many a fight are missed as well because the camera moves elsewhere. Isn’t there a director that chooses what camera to have on? I would imagine it’s his fault. If I can see a scrum developing on the screen, I don’t see why the director wouldn’t. Very frustrating.

  42. Doodie Machetto on

man, if I had anything to talk about, I’d easily score the blog’s first Ovechtrick.

  45. doodie, if im not mistaken the first ever boneheads ‘Ovechtrick’ was scored by Olga.

  46. Doodie Machetto on

was it overnight or during the day? and did it talk about scoring it?

  47. Doodie….It was late at night as I recall, and yes, he declared it an “Ovechtrick”….

  48. MannyFried on

You know what problem i have with the Phlyers unbeaten season commercial?

A goal is score off someone’s beard. The beard is the last thing to touch the puck. They then say “beard gets an assist.” If that was even possible, the beard would get the GOAL not an assist. The player who shot the puck would get the assist and the beard itself (or the player who wore the beard) would be credited with a goal.

    That really gets to me.

  49. Special thanks to our President and our military. Very proud of America today.

  50. In my infinite boredom, I have a question for our Russian friends.

Have any of you guys ever played the game “Where’s An Egg?”

I just randomly thought of it, since it’s in Russian.

  56. billybleedsblue,

It’s very, very strange. It’s one of those things I resort to when there is nothing else to do.

  60. haha! After reading his latest tweets, I wouldn’t rule that out, Manny…

  61. MannyFried on

I heard on Puck Daddy Radio that he was real. Couldn’t believe it. Wow.

  62. Carp
are you saying we should trade a bunch of our
    young prospects for Murray?
    (just kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  63. billybleedsblue on

If that guy with the caps sweater is a camera man, I would believe it. I’m not sure exactly how it works, but assuming the camera operator is a stagehand, it doesn’t surprise me that a) he’s a hockey fan, and b) he wears whatever the hell he wants on the job.

  64. Carp (part 2)

i wonder if vs. and nbc aer doing broadcasts
    on the cheap
    as in
they brought in directors and producers
    for the broadcasts who normally
work other sports and have NO CLUE
about hockey and what should be shown

maybe, if we’re lucky but i doubt it,
the networks will sign up some folks on
the technical side from cbc or tsn or rogers up
    in canada
or at the very very least rethink and redo the
crew and get someone in the u.s. that actually knows the sport.

these would be types who would have cut to a crowd
reaction and miss Randy Couture getting knocked out
    from his MMA match

  65. MannyFried on

Billy – according to PuckDaddy he was actually at Game #2 when he got paged that there was an emergency press conference and he left the game to go straight to the White House.

  70. hmmmmmmm….okay
we need someone at W77 and someone else
    at Avery’s new restaurant
in order to report if Richards

    could be a sign!!

  71. I have never understood the necessity of a camera panning the crowd during a scuffle. Like we’ve never seen a crowd before? You see one you’ve seen them all. And the idiocy compounds itself by preventing you from seeing on ice action, and has absolutely nothing in common with a stadium full of crazies ( all from the same home) who are jumping up and down hollering. If boneheads are among them, my deepest apologies….but you really should keep better company.

  72. ORR

you think Zach Braff looks like Cindy? lol

I heard that Cindy was seen on the roof top of Mario’s house chasing pigeons.

  73. After the flyers lose, who is the team we root for to lose the most? I say the Canadians

  74. JimboWoodside on

    “No Pronger tonight for Philthy.”

Is that a fact, Orr!? He was acting like an ass in the last game, slashing, crosschecking and chopping at a lot of the B’s players, but not getting penalized for any of it…I guess the rules are different for him.

  75. JimboWoodside on

When the Debbies and the Icelanders aren’t playing (like in these playoffs!), I’d say Pittsburgh and Montreal – but they’re out now, too!

  76. They’re all back ups, Jimbo. Except the Flyers don’t want to admit to it..

  77. Yeah, seriously…it was such an awkward fall…head first into the wall…I cringe thinking about it…

  78. Yesterday, my girls, fellow coaches, and I had a end of the year party at an inline skating rink. I’m the only one who can’t rollerblade, so my girls decided they would pull me around the rink. It was a lot of fun, until they let me go and I did probably a 720 and went head first into the boards.

  79. Olga Folkyerself on

Another bright spot for USA Hockey!

  81. How many games have the Flyers finished with one goaltender this postseason?

  82. I did have much fun, ilb. I kicked all their aasens in air hockey, however. Went 5-0, including a come from behind victory. I was down 6-2, and I won the match 7-6.

  83. Evening gang.

So, how long did it take for the Flyers to change goalies? Three seconds?

  84. JimboWoodside on

How did the Flys get Van Reimsdyk? Was he a high draft pick or what? They haven’t been so bad a team for the last few years that they would be getting high draft picks.

  85. JimboWoodside on

Mickey, this time they didn’t switch goalies because of lousy play – Boo-Shay got hurt from a shot on his left leg, it looked like.

  86. JimboWoodside on

2nd overall? Wow! He sure looks good – How did the Flys get such a high pick, I wonder? They haven’t exactly been bottom-dwellers…..Thanks, NYR!

  87. JimboWoodside on

  90. Boucher back in now. WTB is going on in Philly? Do they play musical chairs in the locker room in between periods to determine who the next goalie is? JEEZ

  91. JimboWoodside on

  93. You don’t remember that season, Jimbo? That was an awesome year. They were horrible, and Forsberg was injured all year, and eventually traded to Nashville.

If not for the lottery, they would have drafted Kane, but Chicago went from 5th overall, to 1st overall.

  94. JimboWoodside on

Yeah, I do remember it now – they really were awful that season, but it sure didn’t last. They built a new (good) team pretty fast. Could it be that Holmgren is a good GM!?

Some of the local dining establishments were also giving out free food… it was pretty amazing to see how people came together.

  105. Mickey,

I think I sent the same condolences to you I did to Linda (you were back a day or two ago I believe), but if you didn’t see, or I didn’t actually say anything to you, I’m glad to hear you’re safe and all the best moving forward.

  106. LINDA!

Cliff Notes: Rangers lost in five. These guys here are nuts. Olga wants Sather fired. Wicky wants a crease-clearer. Sally’s done with school. Beard contest results coming soon.

  111. JimboWoodside on

As they slither out of the (insert new name here) Wells Fargo Center, leaving a slime trail behind them, the Flys fans whine and grumble…..

  112. Linda, we need to move back to NY. Get away from this crazy-assen weather! I’ll take a blizzard and 3 feet of snow over tornados any day of the week.

  113. CARP!

Your summary for Linda just made me snort beer, I was laughing so hard.

    And owwie.

  114. Jimbo, find me a job (preferably upstate a little bit) and I’ll be back in a heartbeat.

  115. billybleedsblue on

Linda! Welcome back! You really didn’t miss too much around here! :D

  116. JimboWoodside on

How in hell does the ref not see that puck go in!? Did he have his eyes closed!?

  117. Nice win for the B’s!

Linda, glad to hear that you’re OK! That firetrucking weather is a clutterbuck…

  118. If it gets me closer to my dream of taking Howie Rose’s job, I’ll do it, Jimbo.

I DO have experience working for a baseball team. Granted it was independent league team, but still…

  119. JimboWoodside on

Ah, so you want to put ol’ Howie out of work, eh!? You’ll leave him the Islanders gig in the wintertime though, I suppose!?

  120. Not really. I adore Howie’s work, could listen to him all day long. I was talking about eventually, lol.

  121. Shattenkirk.

I just had to say it. Such a fun name to say.

(uhh, US/Norway replay is on VS right now)

  122. JimboWoodside on

Oh – OK…Howie will be glad to hear that you’re not gunning for his job – not yet, anyway! ; p

  123. Linda!!! Welcome back Southern Sweetheart!!

Gonna have to cheer the Lightning now – which I have no qualms about. Ovechkin is a bum, always has been, always will be. As his the Boudreau and the bandwagon Cappies fans.

Did “tomb” get a reaming out by Carp for his distasteful, racist, uninformed, unintelligent comments about Obama being a worse enemy than Osama? I’ll bet not. He saves his chastising for much more important matters, like those who dare to insult referees. Break the referees’ legs!!!!

  124. Tough first day back at work. Very nervous, a lot of stress and tmj pain, but it felt nice to get back behind the wheel, so to speak. It’s not nice, though, having to wait for someone to pick you up after an exhausting day. Mickey and Linda are safe, all is right with the world. bruins winning is just a game compared to other issues in the world. USA!

  125. A little bit. But I’m not about to carry a grudge or carry it past that previous comment and this one. I don’t like the hypocrisy. Being a family member of a 9/11 victim and even if I was not one, reading a despicable political comment about “Obama being more of an enemy of Osama” was incredibly offensive.

  126. Good night, Carp.

Could be Gasol and Gasol in the West Finals. That’d be fun!
