This is why I don’t like NBC and Versus:
1) There’s a skirmish on front of the Tampa net. Jason Arnott is mad and about to hand out a facial, or at least a glove to the mug, and Versus quickly goes to a closeup of Alex Ovechkin, then a closeup of the back of Dwayne Roloson? WTB? Then shows a replay of the scrum, and cuts it off before Arnott delivers (or doesn’t deliver, how the heck should we know) the glove. Why? Why!?
2) Pavel Datsyuk sweeps a puck off the goal line and ices it, bailing out Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard. Great play. Classic. NBC shows us, like, a gazillion replays. What NBC doesn’t bother to show us, or tell us, while glorifying Datsyuk and his Selke Trophy rep, is that Datsyuk’s awful defensive play, a lost battle and then allowing the San Jose player, Big Douglas Murray, to walk out of the corner unchecked, is what caused the puck on the goal line in the first place. What, they didn’t have enough analysts or cameras at the game?
3) Martin St. Louis scores a fluke goal on a pass intended for Vincent Lecavalier on the other side of the net which never got there, instead deflecting into the net off the skate of Washington’s Mike Green. Oh, what bad luck, Versus tells us. Poor Mike Green. What Versus doesn’t bother to tell us is that had the puck not hit Green’s skate, it goes directly to Lecavalier, a lefty shot at the right post, all alone. In other words, a slam dunk. What Versus doesn’t tell us is that, had Green actually been checking his man, Lecavalier, his skate would have been nowhere near the blue. And it wouldn’t have been a goal. Poor Mike Green. I guess Versus didn’t have enough analysts, either.
4) And how god-awful are the interviews before games, on the bench, and immediately after games? Each analyst starts with a long-winded statement … “Joe, your team fought through a hard seven-game series and had very little rest, and still came out hard tonight …” then a dumb question. C’mon. Get somebody in there who knows how to ask a question.
5) How about the promo in which the announcer terribly mispronounces “Sedin?” … I mean, you can’t do that. You just can’t.
Though I must say, I have no problem listening to Doc Emrick (true professional) or Dave Strader or even John Forslund (if he could lose the “cleared in” Thorne-ism; a cleared puck comes out of the defensive zone, not into the offensive zone).
Oh, and Douglas Murray=Monster. Just sayin’.

Forslund is also extremely keen to say that the goalie “melts it down” when he means “freezes it” which is the complete opposite. Bring back Beninati!

I like Forslund. He’s very knowledgeable. But, the “melts it down” always hit me as being pretty goofy.

I don’t love Doc Emrick, the voice and the cliches are tiresome. But I respect him and would take him over 75% of local guys because he is such a professional. Nobody is more prepared than he is.
I do NOT love Doc Emirick either. With you Doodie. I get annoyed hearing the term “Canceled out” 100 times a period. Also, he is like a free association the entire game. Just going on and on and thinking out loud throughout the play. He, like most announcers, talks too much.

I’ll tell you how simple minded these people are who run the NHL broadcasting. Instead of these artificial and cliche ridden mopes for pbp and color analysis, they constently overlook one of the best and probably THE best, broadcasters in the game. Chuck Kaiten.
Those criticisisms of the TV work by Versus has never changed since their onset. They still have cameras wandering around to irrelevant movement while ignoring the key action and items of interest to the public that can be found. They’re all amateurs and they display it in every game, and it is reinforced when the action is hot and heavy. But don’t lets let the REFS off without a good bye see ya later ( I hope not). there were two separate occasions when St Louis got high sticked in the face and it was as plain as er,...”the noses on their faces”....no call…by any ref! What could they have been looking at?
But I gotta tell ya, this has been the most fun series to watch in my memory without the Rangers, that I’ve seen. There are enough Ranger enemy teams here to cover the league, and it’s kinda fun to be able to root against them, even if TEOMEIMF.

I thought that the Bolts were notably faster as a team than the Caps, but give the Caps credit where it is due…...they didn’t quit, and they looked like they might have kept OV out there a bit too long at times, but I really enjoy watching him go into that Quasimodo crouch when he delivers. It’s unique, and amusing to behold. He does however more than earn his keep…he is the most potent attack force that they have, and his Viking like attack persona really brings out
the latent animalism in his team mates. Those early Scandinavian marauders became berserkers ( their word) when they went a-Viking, and that’s what he brings to the game.
This series will not be won until the Bolts manage to contain him.

Well from his playoff stats it doesn’t really look like anyone’s been able to fully contain Ovechkin, but if nobody else on his team steps up then the Caps will lose regardless of what Ovechkin does. Arnott has probably been their 2nd best forward. Most of Semin’s goals were pretty much “gimmes” (his OT winner, his goal that started the comeback in game 4, his 2 on 1 in game 5, his goal off an awful turnover in game 1 vs TB), Nicklas Backstrom has done next to nothing (2 assists in 7 games). The big difference for Tampa is that they have the weapons to fire back whereas the Rangers did not.
Tie would be a bad result. It would leave the US likely needing a result against Sweden to advance.

I really agree with #1, but I notice the same problem on MSG broadcasts. You’ll see a scrum starting at the end of a play and the camera goes to Torts on the bench, or something like that. I notice that the beginnings of many a fight are missed as well because the camera moves elsewhere. Isn’t there a director that chooses what camera to have on? I would imagine it’s his fault. If I can see a scrum developing on the screen, I don’t see why the director wouldn’t. Very frustrating.

You know what problem i have with the Phlyers unbeaten season commercial?
A goal is score off someone’s beard. The beard is the last thing to touch the puck. They then say “beard gets an assist.” If that was even possible, the beard would get the GOAL not an assist. The player who shot the puck would get the assist and the beard itself (or the player who wore the beard) would be credited with a goal.
That really gets to me.

It has been an enlightening 5 days for sure. We had a great time with our neighbors though, and every shared their food and grills and ice. It was also introspective too, we were very very lucky!
It’s good to be back with you guys, I missed yas so much, and i missed hockey too!! Can’t wait to watch the Preds tomorrow!

Some of the local dining establishments were also giving out free food… it was pretty amazing to see how people came together.

Tough first day back at work. Very nervous, a lot of stress and tmj pain, but it felt nice to get back behind the wheel, so to speak. It’s not nice, though, having to wait for someone to pick you up after an exhausting day. Mickey and Linda are safe, all is right with the world. bruins winning is just a game compared to other issues in the world. USA!
