From break-up day

43

Won’t have time to start transcribing for a while … so just a few things.

Marian Gaborik will play in the World Championships, and promised to take his game up to the next level next season … and when it was mentioned that he had scored 42 playing in this system last year, he kind of said that the system was different last year. In other words, and maybe I’m reading into it, he had trouble with the way the team played this year. He said he would love to have a set line, and mentioned that we all know who the free-agent centers are (read: Brad Richards) and that the team usually does what’s needed to get the free agent help it requires.

Henrik Lundqvist is undecided on the Worlds. He said this is the first year that, even though he’s just 29, he started thinking how many more cracks he might get at the playoffs.

Brandon Dubinsky said that he wants to be  back, the Rangers want him back, so let’s not waste each other’s time in contract negotations. It does occur to me, though, that with Wade Redden’s cap hit coming back onto the books in the summer, the Rangers might have to wait until camp to re-sign some of their own, especially if they spend any significant cash on July 1. Dubinsky also said that the stress fracture in his leg began to show up in the other leg, too, and that they discovered it was the type of soft skates he’d been wearing his whole career that caused the stress … and that when he switched to a different style (same brand) of skate he felt much better. He will not play in the Worlds, because of the injuries and the contract.

Brandon Prust talked and joked about “It’s Just Pain” and how he couldn’t believe how that took off within the team. Martin Biron said he expects to start working out in a few weeks. I didn’t have a chance to catch Callahan, still on crutches, and Staal, who said his knee was still sore during the playoffs.

Sean Avery had some interesting things to say about not being able to commit turnovers and penalties and how that effected his game, and how he decided to just go back to the way he always played in the playoffs, and that “risk/reward” style is the way he has to play from now on. Which should be inetresting.

Dan Girardi, for obvious reasons, is looking forward to some healing time. He said he won’t need any procedures, just rest. Vinny Prospal doesn’t know what to expect, but wants to come back, and won’t play in the Worlds because of his knee. “I’m not 26 anymore,” he said.

More later.

    wow, i can’t type……deux

  2. I call BS on Avery. He knows the depth of this team, and that he’s becoming irrelevant.

He said last summer, “I’ll be the old Avery”, but he was more useless than ever.

Just get rid of him, and EC. Wolski, I could live with.

  3. Did Prospal really say “I’m not 26 anymore”? Come to the blog Vinny, you’ll always be 26.

carped (thanks buddy, was it something I said??)

    CT
    good call on penner!

I wouldn’t mind seeing laich on a line with gabby and richards (if that happens). I hope feds comes back.

How long before teams can resign players and such?

I agree with orr on avery (sorry mama)!

I also think wolski could have potential (COULD) with richards and gabby.

  5. They should re-sign Boyle immediately and then make him stand in concrete in front of the opposing team’s crease for the entire offseason. Use the size big man.

  6. wicky, I don’t know if there’s a moratorium placed on contract negotiations during the playoffs.

Laich, I don’t know about him. He’s basically to the Caps what Dubinsky and Cally are to the Rangers. I don’t know if they need another good but not great player. They need more great players. Plus, take Laich off a team with as much talent as the Caps and I can’t see his numbers getting any better.

that link for olga I posted is now in the whatsamatta U thing on the right

The Rangers don’t have the luxury of waiting until later in the summer to re-sign their own guys. Dubinsky,Callahan,Sauer and Boyle are arbitration eligible. They can file on July 5. Hearings begin in mid to late July. They will determine the timetable.

Besides, the Rangers have the money to re-sign their group II.

I agree with you on his numbers probably not getting any better, I’m just not sure dollars wise if we don’t shed a contract or two, who we will be able to afford. As long as we don’t overpay, at least with guys like Laich (that’s hard to type) you know how they will play all the time.

samuelsson from the nucks might not be a bad guy to investigate. Kind of like laich though, stats may not increase at all on a less skilled team.

Love to get hornqvist from the preds somehow.

was it me or did gabby wound a bit whiny in his interview?

    Poor little Vancouver girl.

    See, THAT’s why first cousins shouldn’t marry….

I know a lot of you don’t like this guy, but I thought the way he described hockey was a riot..

This week’s vlogumn on ESPN.Com is my Hallmark card to hockey and why it is a giant, big sack of awesomeness.. Out tomorrow.

  13. I want as many players whose last names end in “qvist” as possible. Amen Wicky.

  14. Oh so Dubi had two stress fractures. That explains a little. I expect big things from him next year.

Avery. Good bye, you are worthless.

Gaborik promises to be better if we can get him some help. I can kind of see that, but whatever line he was on this year, suffered defensively. Gaborik is not an all-around hockey player. His defense sucks.

  15. Well, at least Dubi is saying the right things.

Still don’t know how much he is really worth (in terms of cap-hit) to this team… Figured that stress fracture was still bothering him….

  16. Defense for most high scoring wingers is usually questionable. The issue is whether they produce enough offensively to make it worth it. Most years Gaborik has been worth the trade off, which is much better than you can say for a guy like Kovalchuk. Although it shouldn’t be a surprise that many defensive indicators for Gaborik went down after he left a Lemaire coached Minny team while many of Kovalchuk’s went up after he was part of a Lemaire coached Devils team.

I agree about the D of high scoring wingers, guys like ryan and iginla are the exception more than the norm!

  18. If the Hobbit could turn into something remotely close to Patrick Kane it would be awesome. The way he seems float in the open ice but still make tape to tape passes in traffic is incredible.

  19. wicky, we’re agreeing too much these days. Once again, SPEND ALL YOUR MONEY FOLKS!

  20. Kane almost reminds me of a point guard – he can float into the zone and then make incredible no look passes while being a scoring threat and thus forcing defenders to cut down his room – leaving other people open. It’s pretty cool.

Also , he skates with such suave posture. Kind of cool.

how did newbury not get in the pic and dos nueve did?

  22. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

I agree with CT agreeing with me…buy many tickets folks!

  23. resign fedentenko and try and make some moves on the wing to upgrade. to me the richards contract in year 3 would be a disaster.

  24. CT – Oh.my.god. What is going on there? Del Zotto’s issue is simple – it’s his wardrobe! Those pictures are really incredible. They should call those pictures “can you guess which person at this party is a professional athlete?” Answer: No.

    AGrossRecord
Torts said Drury’s future with team is something that needs to be discussed.

  26. TULRangerFan on

Why don’t the Rangers offer Redden a desk job for a ridiculous amount of money if he will retire. He don’t even need to show up.

  27. CT, LMAO, I was thinking the same thing!!! How can he not be 26? Everybody’s 26!!

Re: Gross: Torts, from your mouth to Dolan’s ears.

All, not to get into it (but I guess I kind of am) if we lose Avery next year, my reaction will make what happened to the blog yesterday look like a cat nap. Just saying.

  28. Good for you Mama – we all have our passions and I am glad you defend yours. NYR and I threw a fit when Hobbit Wizard was demoted. It’s good for the team and good for us to learn to at least try and respect the boys in the Rangers sweaters!

I am practically dry humping Waseka today with all the breakup day stuff. I should ask it/her to dinner first at least.
