John Tortorella:

About not being disappointed in this team, this season, regardless of the outcome:

“We’re still in a process. So we just keep on going. We try to get better. I think there’s areas on our team where we need to get better. So we continue to build.”

On the start:

“They had the puck. We had problems getting the puck away from them. You’ve got to give them some credit. I thought as the game went on we got better, still struggled to create scoring chances when we had opportunities. But, no, the first period, they took it to us a little bit there. But we only come out 1-0. We’re not hurt that badly. But, again, throughout the game, I thought we got better as a team, but we still didn’t create enough offense.”

On the games that got away:

“I thought the most important thing of the series was in the first four games, we have a lead (in three of them) in the third period, and we come out with one win. And there’s not many opportunities, against a team we’re playing against, when you have them there, just to get it done one time. So I thought that was a very key situation within the series.”

On Dan Girardi (who was hurt by a blocked shot, and later missed time with a finger that was disclocated and required stitches and a freezing injection):

“Oh. Girardi, his finger was all over the place. I think it was dislocated up over the knuckle. He’s getting his ankle x-rayed now. He’s a guy no one talked about in this series. He’s our best defenseman this whole series. He came back … I’ll tell you, high marks for him.”

Do they need guys who can turn one opportunity into a goal, as the Caps can:

“Well, I don’t think our team’s fully built yet. You’ve got to remember where the Washington team was for a number of years. You look at how their team’s built with their draft picks. So we’re not there yet, I’ll be honest with you. We’re not, as far as talent. We have to play a certain way. But again, we’re in the process and we’ll continue to build and continue to find our way.”
