Game 3: Tortorella post-game

Sorry for the delay. Had a lot of work to do.

First, it was learned that referee Chris Rooney, who left the game early in the second period, suffered a broken ankle.

John Tortorella:

“We scored some goals. I don’t think we did much different. I thought we got to the blue a little better today. Again, it’s a tight-checking game. The chances are hard to come by by both teams. We found a way to score a goal, a couple of goals here. There’s no magic potion. We played the same way we want to play. We just scored three, they scored two.”

More agrressive:

“No, I don’t think so. I thought we were really aggressive out there in Washington. Like I said prior, the series is 2-0, but we’re not far off. Now it’s 2-1 and it could be reversed; it could be us 2-1. It’s just that close of a series, and close-checking. So we certainly haven’t gone about our business in any different manner. We’re just trying to play our game.”

On Boudreau complaining about the extra pushing and shoving, i.e. Boyle in front late in the game:

“That’s OK. That’s OK.”

On worry about the late 4-on-4:

“Yeah, it’s, again, they have — I’m honest — they have a few more weapons than we do  in those type of situations. I think we’ve been better this year 4-on-4 but they can put out two or three groups there where they have more people. But I wanted Dubi and Fedotenko when Ovechkin was out there and Dubi made a helluva play. You know, you ask what the difference. That one bounces in. It bounces in and we’re very fortunate to win a hockey game.”

“Good things happen — they score a tying goal because they’re around our net, and that’s just the way the series is. It’s tough to maneuver and get scoring chances.”

On Christensen’s goal:

“I think he shot it down by the goal line. Again, shots to the net. They didn’t block it and we score a pretty big goal there.”

On the disallowed goal:

“No, we were fine. Once they said it wasn’t (a goal), I just said, ‘Let’s get in the room and let’s get about our business.’ There’s nothing you can do about that. It’s not the refs making the call. It’s Toronto making the call. They make the call, we go about our business and keep on playing. And I thought we were really good even getting scored on on the last minute of the period .We just lose our backcheck and I thought we handled ourselves well there, too. The team has just gone about its business here, when we’re down 1-0, down 2-0 in the series, we’ve just tried to stay steady and gone about our business.”

On Dubinsky:

“Dubi is a very important guy for us, and the first couple of games it hasn’t been the game we need out of him in this type of situation, and jeez, I think I played him 25-26 minutes. Not just scoring a goal, he did a lot of the dirty stuff, too. He came up with a lot of big plays defensively and also forechecking.”

On moving him to center:

“Well, we’re not scoring. Our middle of the ice — I think Artie’s been fighting it a little bit, Step’s been fighting it a little bit, and so … he’s still a left-winger. He’s a left-winger. But I needed to use him in the middle and he did a good job. He’s been taking a lot of faceoffs. He does a lot of work as a center-iceman even when he plays the wing. But I wanted to get him and Gabby together. We had Feds there a bit and then we put Vinny Prospal there and Vinny ends up scoring a goal. He turns the God damn thing over after that that causes the penalty that tied it up. But they scored a big goal for us, so he’ll probably stay there.”

On the resilience:

“Not (surprising) anymore … My gut has had that feeling right from the get-go early in the year. We’ve gone through a lot of injuries during the year, we’ve had situations, ups and downs, where we just end up finding ourselves. No one was down. They just continue to try to go about their business I think we have played at a level, or a type of style we need to play at, as each game has gone by we’ve gotten better there. And we’ll have to be better in Game 4 because Washington’s going to be better. So it doesn’t surprise me anymore. It’s a good group of men and we’re going to keep on fighting along here.”

On the traffic to the net:

“Well, they’re goalie’s playing very well. I told Sully I think after the first period, I watched their goalie, I watched, and you just don’t see anything. So we have to. And they’re doing the same thing, trying to get pucks to the paint and people to the blue and I thought we were more ready to shoot the puck today. But a lot of the good stuff I think we played better at was the grinding underneath the hashmarks. Dubi’s goal, the winning goal, that’s the way we have to do it. We don’t play any other way. We’re just not good enough. We have to grind. So it’s good.”

  1. Thanks for all your hard work today, Carp!

Awesome stat of the day: Ruslan Fedotenko Monster played 22:36 today. Wow.

  2. Jeez Carp, talk about a long day. Thanks for all your hard work.

Neither Vancouver or Chicago are letting up in this game. Wowza

  3. Hey Carp – thanks for typing these up – I have such slow bandwidth that video is a no go – so these are really appreciated! Thanks!

  4. the refs are a g.d joke. that punk Torres does the exact same thing he just got suspended for, and these clowns give him a 2 minute slap on the rist. it should have been a 5 minute major, and a game misconduct and a suspension for the blindside hit targetting the head.

  5. Here’s some Bulletin Board material…Let’s keep the Craps on the wrong side of history…

“…the Capitals have a miserable history when it comes to the postseason. They blew 2-0 series leads in losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992, 1996 and 2009 and to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003. Only in 1998 against the Ottawa Senators did they carry the series after winning the first two games. Last season, Washington lost to the Montreal Canadiens after taking a three-games-to-one lead….”

  6. billybleedsblue on

the NHL is clearly full of it. They are all talk. nhl? you are totally right. If they were serious, they would have handled that differently. It was obviously a blind-side hit. Seabrook is lucky to have skated away from that.

  7. Olga Folkyerself on

Kentucky Derby is a joke- 6 hours of horse’s aasens, talking about Horses, then 2 minutes of racing followed by more talking horses aasens.

  8. Olga, if you’re at least at Churchill Downs you get to bet on 11 races but yes…a bit much in the way of talk!!!!

  9. Torres has been doing that for years. he knocked Michalek of the sharks out of the playoffs about 5 years ago when he was with Edm with a blindside hit. it is the same guys over and over. Cooke, Torres, Gillies, etc

and they get off light so they do it again and again.

  10. good for Keith Jones for telling it like it is in the studio. that pos Torres should get suspended, but he already accomplished his mission, he got the Hawks key dman out of the series possibly. the whole thing stinks

  11. Olga Folkyerself on

I thought about commenting on Torres hit, but the NHL doesn’t do squat about those hits from known offenders. We’ll see, but I’m not holding my breath waiting for the NHL to suspend him…

  12. And the NHL should fine the Hawks for not sticking to protocol. Seabrook fell on the ice with his arms on his side- he lost his protective reflexes, a sign of altered mental status. I doubt he’ll be back. Their trainer should’ve picked up on that.

  13. Olga Folkyerself on

Evan- I don’t do well at the track. Last time, the horse I bet on in the fifth, came in first in the sixth.

  14. how about fining the refs for not sticking to protocol? they did not call the rule that was just passed with all the fanfare, they just showed that they do not deserve to do playoff games. they are incom petent if they can’t even call the most obvious fouls that the league is supposedly cracking down on

  15. Orr -I’m a wee bit late regarding your 9:26 pm post, but…

    *DUH! No Shyte Sherlock!*

  16. hello boneheads. im alive and well thanks to dubiiiiii big goal. just got back from msg. did some post game drinking. the garden erupted on dubi goal it was deafening.

now we got a series. off to hang out with wife. left her all day with baby. have to make up for my day out

  17. Stranger Nation on

Was that dubi or one of the beastie boys from the “sabotage” video? Look it up…

I know this will get some of your panties in a bunch but aves play in the 3rd per in game 2 and 1st per today got some mojo working..

  18. Olga Folkyerself on

Doesn’t seem fair that the player hit in the head has to go for evaluation and the hitter gets to keep playing. They should send them both. If the one doesn’t come back, they are both out.

  19. billybleedsblue on

Olga, I like that idea. If one guy is off the ice from the play (or out with an injury) then why not the other guy too? Makes sense to me!

  20. It be soo awesome to win these next two games, and come back to the Garden with the chance to eliminate them.

The only time I like looking at OvechCANT’s face is when he’s disappointed!! Still ugly, but satisfying!

  21. Olga Folkyerself on

Pittsburgh Penguins traded Alexei Kovalev, Dan LaCouture, Janne Laukkanen and Mike Wilson to the New York Rangers for Mikael Samuelsson, Rico Fata, Joel Bouchard, Richard Lintner and cash.

    Way to go, Glen…

  22. Let’s just concentrate on Wednesday.
It’s going to be a long week for us but hopefully the extra rest is good for the team.

  23. I agree with Torts – not much differences on the Ice between these 3 games. This series could be 3-0 or 0-3 or 2-1 (which it is) or 1-2 or any combination of 3 games with the way these guys have really ground it out.

I feel very comfortable with the way our heroes have played. Right guys playing the right way at the right times.

  24. LOL on Erskine’s discipline

..when Brandon Prust asked him to dance halfway through the first. A younger player may have obliged; Erskine didn’t, knowing full well that even a draw would have been a win for the Rangers and their *blood-thirsty crowd*.

  25. On my way back to cap country after my first home game of the yr. Going to game 5 down here hopefully going for series lead. Good today Aves,Feds,Prust,Hank,Gabby,Vinnie,DanG. Not so much AA WW btw most wicked shot by EC wow! Worst call was the make up call on Gabby total cooke

  26. Stranger Nation on

Eskine is big boy, not sure of his ability to throw.

Love the win, understand they are asking him to play against ovech, but prior to the goal, dubi was not playing at a level we need with callyman out. Maybe he is dealing with gabby on his line.

His goal was a microcosm of what we need to do against this punk arse goalie. Win the board battle, Take it to the blue and jam the puck thru the fogger.

  27. Glad to see the ‘Nucks go up 3-0 because I think the Blackhawks have no chance in this series and I would hate for their series to have the same score as our series.

  28. Yum…..Bloowdweiser….sounds like a joke we can author…

Q: “What is Dracula’s favorite beer?”
    A: “Bloodweiser”

  29. Haha yea NYR! It really was. I was screaming “captain useless” whenever he touched the puck. Plus he got took that penalty. He shut me up with that insane shot

  30. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Hank is world class… I think the rangers have entered the head of the craps young goalie… Wednesday is huge..rangers will prevail.

  31. 4 Quick Things:

    1) wow!!!!!!!!!

    2) if you get a chance, watch nhl network highlights. it shows that hendricks tried to kick
a Rangers player and then during same play did kick out the leg of a Ranger in front of the net.

    3) ref ended up breaking ankle.

    4) didn’t look like ovi’s stick touched the puck when it went in the goal. if it bums him out and messes with his head, fine.

  32. billybleedsblue on

The more I see the replay… that Dubi goal was ridiculous! He willed it into the net!

The BAP line has been pretty good I have to say. BAP…what is that, like the old Batman TV show, when they would have the fist-fights with the henchmen and the screen would be like, “BAP!” when Batman punched Joker? Heh, anyways, they are rockin’. I’d love to see them score a goal. That would be amazing.

  33. loneranger April 17th, 2011 at 11:29 pm
Carp In order for the end of the first period goal to be a goal it must go over the line before the end of the period. To you and Orr Happy Palm Sunday. This could be fate guys. Actually we played well enough to win by a higher score.

  34. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Let’s go rangers….garden was alive… Hopefully, it will be louder cone game 4.

  35. hmmmmm….
maybe we need to amend the Paul Mara memorial beard contest
and change it to the Dubi Mustache Contest

i had a ‘stache many years ago
    and switched to the beard/goatee

  36. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Jpg- while dubi’s stache makes that chick want to puke, her picture is enough to cause anyone to hurl.

  37. what did that bum sather do to get mcdonagh?

what did sather do to get prospal?

what did sather do to get Girardi?

What did sather do to get cally, dubi, AA, stepan ,and others?

Oh Sather makes some bad moves and also some good moves.

why did no team draft Henrik before the 7th round? Sh-t happens…………….

The Rangers are young and tough and will get better, enjoy and stop whining.

Mikael samuelson is like zherdev, lisin, and many man other players they are skilled but soft and are not difference makers,,,,

  38. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

got carped a couple of threads ago, so here is the repost (great game day job carp, THANKS!!).

Have fun tonight heads (watching a subtitled movie with the mrs, so no way can I keep up with you rock stars and read the screen, later assens and LGR!!)

    800+ posts=great work heads

no way am I reading them so my quick summary

you have to shoot the puck (EC goal) to score, we seemingly shot alot more

drive to the net (dubi and Netherlands goal), which we seemingly did alot more

keep moving the feet, which we seemingly did alot more

I didn’t wear any rangers clothes today

I stayed away until after the game once the “go time” thread went up

The 5 keys to victory I guess

Dubi kisses are just stupid, but the stache absolutely rocks!!

So just out of curiosity, how long after the dubi goal did some idiot carcillo head post “where are all the dubi haters now” or something similar???

dubi absolutely doesn’t score there if it isn’t for feds, great work by both on the winning goal!!

Did WW play at all other than the one goal sequence??

Prust, avery, boyle, and feds=monsters (said it all along, we need to resign feds, invaluable)

Everyone do everything the same on wednesday, don’t change anything (boneheads and rangers)

    Way to go boys…LGR!!!

  39. billybleedsblue on

    Eddie x3 “BAP WHAM SMASH”

EXACTLY! :D I really like that line combo.

As for the stash, I give it a thumbs up. Dubinsky is growing up. Don’t hate on his young 20’s facial hair. He’s just getting his “man strength.” Many more good years to come!

  40. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Wicky – go back to “go time” and read my keys to the game…shots on net, finish checks, get to the net, move your feet…

  41. hey wicky
i read your post the first time.
    no prob

i have no problem with samuelsson
thought he was pretty good with red wings
    and now with canucks
    don’t think he’s a 1st line guy
    maybe 2nd
    definitely strong 3rd line contributor
from what i’ve seen of him over the years.

  42. Wow, just watched the game on DVR thankfully without knowing the outcome. We got the bounces in this game. After that goal was waived off going into the second intermission, I only expected bad things, but the Capitals never gained the lead. Well-played all the way through. Tough “break” for the ref, but he knows where the net is. I wonder how that affected the game. To Wednesday!

  43. Stranger Nation on

The stache is cheezy but original.

Caber is done, please play Em. Gilly playing good, penalty in first was a carcillo call

That 3rd goal was about will. Watch replay with girardi coming in crashing net and cross checking ov onto his arse as the puck rolls in – classic.

    Wed night will be rocking!

  44. “ear rape”
i may have to steal…i mean borrow that!

    yes, Mrs. Mike Fisher

at least McCabe was taking shots tonight.

  45. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Let’s go rangers…ToMG was right, this ranger team will never make the playoffs

  46. Noah-allahan-iron, 28 on

Replay of the game on MSG+ right now for those that have it. Not sure how that’s possible considering it was an NBC game but I won’t complain.

  47. Stranger Nation on

Caber pinched on PP on caused 2-1 which saved (of course!). Caber trying to catch up to play when EZ comes striding by and it looks like caber whacked him with his stick to get EZ moving. I mean, the Derby is only 2 weeks away.
