Tortorella post-practice

Hey, John Tortorella quotes to follow shortly. Not much news today, other than next season beginning in Stockholm, and the Rangers signing Carl Hagelin and sending him to Connecticut (AHL), which still hasn’t been officially announced.

Here’s some news, though:

I think the Bi-annual Paul Mara/Boneheads Playoff Beard Contest Extravaganza, Picnic and Parade is going to make a comeback this year. We’re still in the process of ironing out the hows and whens. I hope to have more info late tonight or tomorrow. Sally is already established as a 7-2 favorite to win.

Also, for a variety of reasons, I’m not going to go to Games 1 and 2, but I hope to/plan on being at every other game the rest of the way, right through the Canyon of Heroes parade, or however far it goes.

  1. Ok guys – I need some SERIOUS advice and help:

I am a big time believer in superstitions, especially those that surround the beard. I did not trim my beard before the end of the season because it would be “preparing” for growing a playoff beard and that was looking ahead…so I am already a ragged mess. I have a REALLY important job interview coming up. I have to clean up. While I always have facial hair to some degree – I need to clean this up for the interview.

WHAT DO I DO!? I can’t make this decision alone because I will feel like I am jinxing everybody.

  2. Doodie- Thanks for the carryover. As long as it’s ok with someone other than me I will be cleaning it up. Thanks!

  3. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, sometimes, you have to look out for numero uno. When is the interview, and for what kind of job?

  4. I would be leaving the legal profession for the financial sector which would hopefully segway into working in Sports. Mo Money = Mo Problems.

It’s a “final callback” type interview and it isn’t scheduled yet. I am anxiously awaiting the call.

I will just have to get a glue on beard for the Picnic and Parade.

  5. Fried Man, no head starts! Everyone needs a clean slate for the playoffs. Also, jobs are kind of important.

  6. I like where you are going Sally….So I could shave it off on Wednesday and go clean start for the playoffs. Then I will be in good shape for the interview and I won’t jinx our team.

  7. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, as someone still in the legal profession, I salute you.

    Good luck, keep us posted.

Orr, I’ve been saying it ever since the Beanpot. I think Kreider stays in school. That interview Torts gave made it sound like Kreider is already heavily leaning in that direction.

  8. Will do Doodie.

Background is such: I am 30 and although I have been a paralegal for years and an intern, clerk etc….I am finally working as an associate (pending admission scheduled for May 2011). I wanted to litigate. Man-oh-man is the job market sad out there. I am $215K in debt from all this schooling and the jobs that I have (and those i was offered) are horrendous. No upward mobility and barely any pay. It’s a scary world. I guess our profession is shrinking and I think an early exit might be beneficial if I apply for these jobs that say “JD preferred” and therefore pay me more. The pay scale and promotion ladder is tremendous outside the legal profession.

  9. Carp, its just pity that the Rangers dont play in Germany but anyway I try to get some tickets for the Globen but that will be very difficult as those games in Sweden selling out in hours as I have heard in the past when the Red Wings played there….

  10. Tickets will be much easier to get in Germany and way more cheaper with 20 Euros….

  11. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, the profession isn’t shrinking, it’s been just so watered down. You took the bar exam with almost 12k people, 70% of which passed. That means 8400 new lawyers. You think 8,400 new lawyer jobs were created? Supply is just so much larger than demand that employers know that they can basically get away paying minimum wage or in some cases less when you factor in how many hours you are actually working.

That blog was actually written by a friend of mine from middle school. Make sure to read some of the interview stories.

For me, the trick has been parlaying one job into another job into another. You go in saying you make X and that you’ll need Y to switch, with X always being more than you actually make.

  12. billybleedsblue on

lol, the miami wimp actually predicted Caps in 3. LOLOLOLOL! gotta love that guy!

  13. is it true that games 6 and 7 vs Wash will only be shown by TSN, and picked up by nhl network??

that is pathetic if true. who wants to see those key games with friggin Gord Miller and Pierre Baldy doing the call ????

No Sam, no MSG coverage of those last 2 games???

  14. Doodie Machetto on

ilb, I’m with you, also unable to do the beard contest this year. While I have improved my work situation twice since the last beard contest, this job is a lot stricter in terms of grooming and appearance than either of the previous two.

  15. That’s great advice. Thanks Doodie. I think you’re right about turning one job into another job and so on and so forth. I need to always be looking. I got comfortable here and it was a huge mistake. Huge.

You’re right – the entering class of Lawyers is really huge. I guess watered down is a better description. It’s pretty intense looking for a job. I know kids that graduated top 5, law review, magna cum laude, etc.. from Brooklyn Law School and are just unable to find employment.

I myself went to Quinnipiac and although I graduated with Honors, I think it was my experience in the legal profession that helped me get a job, which I feel very fortunate to have. But I am getting married in a few months and I cannot survive on this salary (my fiance is also an attorney – surprise). It’s really tough. Obviously not nearly as hard as it is for many of the worlds peoples but from my own perspective it’s tough out there…..anyways…I will shut up now and go back to Hockey.

  16. Sally

thanks for posting those old RR threads in previous post! I went over some of the posts from ’08 and ’09 when Sam was running the blog and most of those post BARELY got 100 comments per thread! Even on game days! So whoever says or thinks that this blog was better when Sam ran it…think again!

  17. Doodie Machetto on

MT. No, that is not true. MSG will broadcast every non-NBC game with it’s own coverage, and will do pre and post game coverage for every game, NBC broadcasts included.

  18. lots of coaching changes. Lemaire quit, and Clouston, DeBoer and Richards are already fired. Sacco should be axed too. and there may be more after the playoffs. Renney should be fired, but they probably keep him cuz he works cheap

  19. Doodie Machetto on

Right, you had mentioned your fiancee was a BLS grad. I lived around there for a while so I know a lot of them, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I knew her too, depending on the class year.

  20. CCCP, I liked Sam, but Carp is the man. Are you gonna grow a playoff beard?? I consider you my biggest competition, you know.

  21. Doodie Machetto on

Scotty, I think they give Sacco another go. Sure, it was one of the worst half-seasons in NHL history, but he did lead them to a really good finish the year before, and a pretty good start this year. I think he gets another shot, but will be on a short leash.

  22. She graduated in 2006 I think. We live above Clark Street Diner right now. LOVE that neighborhood. I never wanted to leave the Connecticut Shoreline but that neighborhood won me over. (Also she is pretty great).

  23. Doodie Machetto on

Sam never participated in the discussion. Sure, he was able to dedicate more time to the team, but honestly, what is Carp going to tell me that I can’t find out from Gross, Zip, Cerny, or Brooks?

I come here for the editorial, not the news.

  24. czechthemout!!!! on

Great news n Hagelin! I no that many here won’t agree with this statement but I think they should bring Hagelin into the lineup. We can certainly use his speed, checking ability, penalty killing and offensive creativity in the lineup. I ‘ve watched him play and think he is ready to play now. Before I am attacked by some of our armchair player development gurus, bear in mind that there have been plenty of college kids that have gone right to the playoffs and done really well. Kelly Miller and a relative unknown defensemen by the name of Rob Blake come to mind. As well as Matt Care with the Sharks more recently.

    Ok fire away!

  25. Sam was good… but this place definitely took off when Carp got here!

Yes… i am growing my beard already! I hope you haven’t shaved, Sally! :P

  26. Doodie Machetto on

At 2006, I probably don’t. I was there mostly for 2007 and 2008. Of course, that means I also got to know some of the 09 grads also.

The 2009 grads got it the worst. The 2008 grads all got hired, and then the recession really hit the legal community and they all got the ax. So the 2009 grads were competing with experienced 2008 grads for the same jobs. Brutal.

  27. Doodie Machetto on

BANJ, she is with ESPN New York now. I don’t know if she would be allowed to.

  28. Doodie Machetto on

CTO, how about we just see how he does with the Whale for a little bit first before we throw him into the fire of the NHL playoffs? I’m not saying he can’t do well, just saying that we aren’t that desperate to make that kind of a gamble.

  29. Doodie, yeah I saw her covering the Jets this season alot during the post came interviews, you could see her walk by. And I saw her in a newspaper picture in the background in Florham Park.

  30. I never posted on this blog before this season but as a “newbie” (hoping for Rookie of the Year award) I really think this place rules. I don’t know about Sam running the blog but it’s really the amazing group of people that are around here that are REALLY knowledgeable and able to enhance my love of the game and my love for this team. Really a great place

Carp rules. I think he posts the perfect amount and lets us go off on our own. When people that run blogs get too involved I think it pushes the posters out. Carp is the perfect balance.

  31. Sacco staying would be a mistake. I know they had a depleted team and losses were expected, but what was not excusable was the lack of effort by Col in their last month. they were unwatchable mainly because they did not give an honest effort, and that is inexcusable.

there is serious trouble in the room there after the trade to St Louis, the players seemed to go into a funk.

  32. Doodie

It’s not what Carp can or cannot tell you that you can’t get anywhere else, especially with the addition of widget on RR… it’s about the peanut gallery! The people who come on here connect with each other a lot more than back then! And i think it is largely because of Carp.

  33. gregm_section403 on

“…but I hope to/plan on being at every other game the rest of the way, right through the Canyon of Heroes parade, or however far it goes.”

From your mouth to God’s ears!!!

  34. czechthemout!!!! on

I don’t think it’s much of a gamble. I think it is more of a gamble at this stage to have Zucc and EC in the lineup.
Zucc’s play has really tailed off the last dozen or so games and EC sucks for anything other than the shootout. So he is basically useless.

  35. LinCalPrustBoylahan24 on

Great news about Tiki!!! Hopefully he progresses at lightning speed!

Carpy, you should have put “the law firm of” before your byfuglien carcillo Cooke post! That’s the first thing I thought of!!
All these freakin days off between games is bullcookeing carcillo!
All my money is on Sally in the PMPBC!

  36. Noah-allahan-iron, 28 on

As a “proud” member of the New York and New Jersey bar, I can echo everything that has been said about the legal market ad nauseum. I count my lucky stars every night that I am employed (and that I’m able to sit on here every day while working). Manny, I wish you best of luck with the interview…hope it goes well.

As for the playoff beard, everyone’s should commence Wednesday. And I am going to give it my all to avenge 2009!

  37. Lol, Miami! I guess you forgot to add that the rest of the clowns don’t show up at all….

  38. Noah-allahan-iron, 28 on

Holy crap…I just learned of another example of my powers to completely mush my teams after looking back at the Paul Mara Contest results:

    Noah May 8th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I am laying it out on the line right now…I will win the beard contest next year.

    “We will win tonight.”

I just assumed we’d make the playoffs in 2009-2010. And we didn’t. The mush power lives!

  39. I have been annoyed with folks putting MZA and EC in the same sentence.

EC doesn’t have a tenth of the heart of the Hobbit Wizard! Yeah, they both are sick at shootouts but that’s where the similarity stops…

MZA has shown more consistency in his overall game than Christensen, and he’s only a rookie…

EC should be press-boxed for the playoffs unless someone goes down with an injury….

4th line should be Drury centering Avery and Zuke…

  40. Noah – you too? Man – we should start a “Rangers Fans Networking” event in the city.

I work around Bryant Park – you guys?

  41. Noah-allahan-iron, 28 on

I work in Jersey but appear in New York from time to time.

I’ll never forget the summer studying for the bar because that was also the summer of the Gomez trade and Gaborik/Brashear signings. I had to literally put aside by bar books for hours to wrap my head around everything that was going on.

I seem to remember Doodie giving me some words of encouragement as well…which was nice!

  42. Well I pass by Fulton on my way from the Heights to Times Square – we should totally have “Lawyer / Rangers” morning coffee and whine sessions.

  43. CapeBretonRangerFan on

Mama, thanks for the wonderful news regarding Tiki. All is good in Carpville.

  44. Noah – I took the bar last summer (found out I passed in November – first try – don’t know if I had a 3nd try in me). I really locked down. I was really surprised – I am horrible at focusing. I would just study my buns off and then go skateboarding (like I was 16 again) for an hour until I was tired and then go study more. Luckily nothing crazy happened to distract me.

  45. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

Ok, so where was hank at when he a drury were watching the game? Was it an interview?

I will be participating in the beard contest this time, (shaving tonight)…with my freaking baby face, I don’t have a shot in hell unless I cheat like sally (oops, scratch that)!!!

    I picked rangers in 6.

I dont think we match up as well with the caps as we did before the trade deadline, but them or the bruins were my two best match up picks for us.

that nucks hawks first round match up is going to be good (go nucks!!!! sorry olga)

  46. Noah-allahan-iron, 28 on

I slept for about 37 minutes before the first day of the New York exam. I’m still not quite sure how I passed.

As for the Rangers, I wish there was more written about who watched the TB/CAR game and what the groups were. I’m always interested in that stuff.

One thing I know for sure: Dubi and Cally were watching together and watching DVR’ed episodes of “Gossip Girl” during the intermissions.

  47. Manny – I am chiming in late, but maybe this will help you make your decision. It is from Zip’s Twitter –> Marty Biron hasn’t started skating yet, but is closer. Will shave beard. “I’ve done the playoff beard. I’m going to shave everyday.”

Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Here is a possible compromise, if you decide to shave or go for a “neat and trim” just do it on a non-game day. That is what I have done in the past when I have tried to change the luck by not growing the playoff beard. Given that the amount of grey has grown over the past few years, I might have to pass on the beard and go for the non-game day thing.

Then again, all of that goes out the window once the Rangers lose! My wife, who is fast becoming a huge Ranger/hockey fan, still doesn’t get what the deal is with all of my little “superstitions”. I have a feeling by the end of this season she might! :-)

  48. Stranger Nation on

IMO, Hagelin is not ready – could not get through checks in N2A games I saw – has speed but did not see many ‘gifted’ hockey plays that say – ‘this could be a top 6 NHL forward’.

That being said, I would play him over EZ, heck, I would play Gilly over EZ, hell – maybe even Boogie over EZ. Gawd, I have that fugger.

    PO Predictions:

NYR over Caps in 6 (best match up for us, Caps back-line and Goalie are weakness.

BBBs over Filthy in 7 (C’mon Miller, knock these paper champions out of the tourney early)

Boston over Habs in 5 (this could be over in 4, Habs are a scared of the Big Bad Bs)

Pens over Bolts in 6 (though Bolts are my sentimental fav after HUGE win on Sat night!)
