ORR: I’m assuming buttchin is Gaborik and if so, I disagree. He played well and skated strongly. On the very important McDonagh goal it was Gabbie who started a give and go with Prospal and in doing so drew 3 Devils to him. That helped create the wide open space for McDonagh to move in.
I totally concur Gabbie had a horrible year, but when he’s skating hard he worries the opposition to the point where his teammates often have open ice. The McDonagh goal is a prime example of that.

Great feeling today. The Rangers executed some plays, even scoring on a clean 2 on 1.
This has been the hardest working team in years. Can’t fault their effort this season. With a little more talent, they’ll be a serious contender.
With the embarrassing no-show by the Thrashers last night, the hockey world will be closely observing the Lightning effort tonight.
The Canes have to hustle and hit hard tonight to beat a good team. They will force Tampa to skate and hit back. The Bolts, their new coaches and management believe they’re building a winning franchise and have a chance to set a Tampa record for wins. They won’t be giving up ankles (!), but they won’t let the Canes walk all over them. Let’s see what they’re made of. LGL.

It will be disappointing if we don’t make the playoffs because of how it happened but no matter what happens tonight, this season is a success. Even the the most optimistic could not have predicted 93 points and such major contributions from 3 rookies. We are on the right track doing it the right way.

Dave Maloney had the best assessment prior to the game. He said that even if the season ends on a downer today that this team had much more ups than downs this season and it’s a team to be proud of.

After losing to the Wild on 3 March, the Rangers were in 8th place on 70 points and had 16 games left in the season. They went 11-4-1 after that, including wins against Philadelphia (x2), Boston (x2), San Jose, Pittsburgh and Montreal.
On the face of it, that’s a good record. Just frustrating that the losses included those dogs of performances against the Isles and Thrashers and that the Sabres and Canes have more than matched that record.

Don’t know if anyone has noted this but, I’ve been a NYR fan since 1968-69 and this could possibly be the first time there will be no playoff series involving at least one of the three local teams (excluding strike year, of course). How sad not to have the Rangers to root for- or the Isles or Devils to root against. Here’s hoping things go well tonite- but Canes have been breathing fire lately- and would be a most formidable foe in the playoffs. A week ago I would have gladly taken 3 out of 4…
