Rangers recall Kris Newbury

102

I’m wondering if Ruslan Fedotenko might be hurt, or somebody else. Or if they just want a fresh body with some jam against the Bruins.

Though I am guessing the Rangers had to have an injury to make this move.

—————–

Just had an interesting thought about Zuccarello’s demotion. If he was here and the Rangers had an injury, they couldn’t recall somebody. They would be forced to use him.

So with the minimum number of forwards on the team, if somebody goes down, they can handpick the type of player they recall. And with the Rangers’ final three games (the final 12, actually) all within an hour of Hartford, they have given themselves some flexibility by sending Zuccarello down.

——————-

Here’s the announcement from the Rangers:

NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION UPDATE

New York, April 4, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Kris Newbury has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Newbury, 29, recorded an assist on the game-winning goal in a 4-2 victory for the Whale vs. Portland yesterday.  He has registered 16 goals and 42 assists for 58 points, along with 128 penalty minutes in 67 AHL games with Connecticut this season.  Newbury has established career-highs assists and shots on goal (192), and leads the team in points and assists, is tied for first on the Whale in game-winning goals, fourth in goals, and ranks fifth in penalty minutes.  He led Connecticut with 14 points (six goals, eight assists) and a plus-seven rating in 13 games during the month of March, including a seven-game scoring streak from March 5 at Springfield to March 18 at Manchester (six goals, five assists over the span).  Newbury has registered a team-high, 14 multi-point performances this season, including two separate streaks of three games with multiple points – November 13 vs. Springfield to November 19 at Springfield (six assists), and December 3 at Providence to December 11 vs. Manchester (one goal, six assists).  The 5-11, 213-pounder established a career-high with an eight-game assist streak from November 28 vs. Adirondack to December 17 vs. Worcester, recording three goals and 12 assists over the span.

Newbury returns to the Rangers where has registered one assist and 35 penalty minutes in 11 games this season.  He made his Blueshirts debut at Montreal on January 15, and recorded his first point as a Ranger with the primary assist on the game-tying goal in a 3-2 shootout win at Atlanta on January 22.

The Brampton, Ontario native was originally San Jose’s fifth round pick, 139th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.  He was acquired by the Rangers from Detroit in exchange for forward Jordan Owens on March 3, 2010.

    Carp’d!

    RE-POST:

As for trading yesterday’s shootout for a year ago, I agree with the popular opinion. Last year’s team would not have gone on the run the Flyers went on to make it to the Finals. The Flyers got their team healthy at the right time and were actually better than their seed.

This year, the Rangers can be the 2009-2010 Flyers.

(Just have to get in first!)

  2. I think this year’s Flyers are a better reflection of how good their team can be. The Rangers are more like a legitimate 7th or 8th place team which isn’t bad considering the youth, underachieving sniper and proneness to major scoring slumps.

  3. Just had an interesting thought about Zuccarello’s demotion. If he was here and the Rangers had an injury, they couldn’t recall somebody. They would be forced to use him.

  4. You know something….It feels good to be right sometimes. Thank god the Rangers finally listened to me and got someone up here who can take a flippin’ faceoff.

I learned that from Waseka (our widget). Nice name Latona.

I believe Newbury up means that………hmm….who sits? I bet Wolski and then you move Stepan to a winger and play Newbury in Center.

  5. Carp, do you think EC might see be prucha’d during postseason – IF we get there – because of no shootout and in favor of someone with more toughness?

  6. “So with the minimum number of forwards on the team, if somebody goes down, they can handpick the type of player they recall. And who says Sather is incompetent!?!? haha

  7. That’s a great point Carp. Thanks. I never thought about it. What do you think happens now that Newbury is up? I agree with the possible injury to Fedotenko. Another thought is that Dubinsky might be suffering…Maybe that Flu came back. Prust Sayin’

I hope this doesn’t mean horrible news later in the day.

  8. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, while they have been bad for most of the season, they have actually dominated in faceoffs over the last 3 games. Still, the last time they lost the faceoff battle was against Boston, so I’m sure having a little insurance doesn’t hurt.

  9. It could also mean that somebody is just questionable for tonight, for example, Fedotenko might be a game-time decision, or he might skate in warmups. So they have the emergency recall here just in case … and then if that injured player plays, Newbury can’t play.

  10. I believe you Doodie – I guess from the naked eye it just looks like every important faceoff they get they lose. I would love to have Newbury take a faceoff on the PP and then hit the bench immediately.

Again – this is all my naked eye and not stats.

  11. Boom Boom Bathgate on

That explains the MZA demotion. I was starting to think the skilled shootout guys are poison to Sather, guys like MZA and Parenteau, whom I wish we had kept. Not an all-star, but better than a journeyman and dynamite, one on one, and quietly having a good year on the island.

  12. Doodie Machetto on

“So they have the emergency recall here just in case … and then if that injured player plays, Newbury can’t play”

Nor would he play anyway in that situation.

  13. Doodie Machetto on

If we win tonight, I’d feel really good about the playoff chances.

Too bad I’ll be at the game tonight. Hello SO loss!

  14. Doodie, what I mean is, if they recall Newbury because Fedotenko is potentially hurt, and they decide Fedotenko can play, Newbury can’t go in for Wolski, for example.

  15. Stranger Nation on

If Feds is out…this is notta so a good, no?

EZ almost has to play because of SO possibility. Only logging 4th line mins, but he is making up for the low quantity with low quality.

  16. Do we have any guess of who is in goal tonight for the Bruins?

Stranger – that is what I meant in the last post when I said that the Skillz Comp. really changes our lineup each night for the worse. I wish there was a rule where you could just carry 3 guys for Skillz Comp only.

  17. I like the Newberry call up. The NYR have had trouble establishing a forecheck game and winning faceoffs. Newbery can do this. I think Newberry is better than EC on the whole, but the NYR need ANY kind of offense they can get…so EC got the nod.

  18. Stranger Nation on

    true that

NHL should do like lacrosse and have a one on one battle with goalies starting in center ice – now that would be fun to watch.

  19. You know what? Who cares about the Devil’s payroll. Go talk about it on their site!

  20. Doodie Machetto on

Steve C, who cares about it? A Rangers fan that isn’t short-sighted and cares about what his division rival will look like since it affects the Rangers directly 6 times a year, indirectly but still importantly another 18 times a year, and indirectly, but somewhat less importantly another 40 times a year.

  21. Doodie Machetto on

Orr, I thought that too when Drury was coming back for the second time from his broken finger. Then after 20 games, I changed my mind. The only two guys I’ve seen play more than 5 games for the big club this year that I’d take Drury over are Grachev, Weise, White, and Boogaard.

  22. I think Dreary came back too soon, and it screwed him up.

*If* he’s at least 90% healthy, I’d take him on the 4th line, and PK. I’m not thinking offense, I’m only thinking defense, and he’s a solid defensive forward.

    No sarcasm :P

  23. That’s true. He can win some faceoffs too. I just want to see him play before he comes back. I can’t deal with Drury back in the Playoffs and playing like he was.

    Did he get new pants?

  24. Drury will get new pants when Tony finally puts a pair on…we’re gonna be waiting for a while.

  25. I agree about Dreary, Orr!!! *If* he’s healthy, he should play over EC!!

Very interesting observation, Carp. The Rangers just gave themselves flexibility (in addition to MZA quality ice time)…it makes more sense now. This may mean that Zuccarello comes back….depending on health/fit of the team before playoff time…

  26. NYR – he *will* be back because he is the magic Hobbit Wizard. He plays the piccolo on all their plane rides.

  27. Yea that’s him. He beat boxes and plays the Piccolo at the same time while dancing with his Hobbit Feet exposed and casting amazing Wizard spells on the crowd.

    morning ILB and all!

I’m still trying to to catch up on everything, but finished the dvr’d game and…….

there are still more than a couple flyers on would love to have on this team, but I hate the flyers!! They sure have a couple of character players on their roster though!!

Mcdonut made a HUGE mistake on the zherdev goal, but you deal with those mistakes because he is a rookie (just like you deal with avery’ mistakes/penalties at time because he is an emotional player).

I though it was mccabe that lost his man on the first flyer goal not eminger. That being said, they are both playing better D than OPG by a long shot!

That flyer team is lost without Donger on D, but coburn is a hell of a d man! (always loved this commercial….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNNk6vl41dM&feature=fvsr)

I have to disagree with many of you on his Prustness losing a lot of fights. He is certainly overmatched in a lot of them because we do not have a heavyweight and he takes on all comers. He is also a walking ice bag and I still don’t think he has full ROM in his shoulder since the komisarek takedown (which I still believe should be a penalty), he just doesn’t seem to have the “pop” in his punches. I think most of his fights have not been clear cut and indeed a few losses involved, but he has never been really dominated in any of them that I can remember. Either way he always seems to be fighting above his weight class, but never above his heart class!!

Love they way boyle has tried to go with guys lately, he needs struds to give him a few pointers though.

I hope feds isnt hurt (i would have rather seen newbury in than EC all along, but feds is a no brainer resigning and invaluable to this team IMHO!

    What is the sarcasm symbol??

  29. He must shave them to get them into those skates – otherwise he would have fur hanging out the sides.

  30. i would like drury to come back for teh p,layoffs too. i’d like him to come back and serve the team some papa clutchio’s patented clutch garlic knots between periods.

Good afternoon ‘heads. Seems like the severe weather is on the way. Please pray for me that we do not lose power for the game!!

Tony, when did you stop wearing pants?

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!

  34. no, in all seriousnes, i’d take dru over any of teh shootout guys liek ec,wolski or uhh, ec, and wolski. yea. and we sure as hell dont need aves taking stupid penalties in the PO like doodie said

  35. i’ll pray linda! we had tornadic activity here in iowa last night., and its been gettin crazy over here lately too

  36. ilb- you would look dazzling in skinny pants! i could see ilb back in the 70’s doin the disco duck with dugay in studio 54. ha j/k ilbzo!

  37. Hey Carp, love the new title graphics….well, maybe it’s not that new, haven’t been here lately, but in any event, its tackiness goes quite well with your writing and the asinine comments it attracts. Have a great playoff season everyone.

  38. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    shaves his feet=eeeewwwwwww!!

  39. I don’t think McDonut made a mistake. It was a risk he had to take. He could barely stand, so either way you look at it, Zherdev would have blown right by him.

Can’t blame Boyle either, which I know some will do, since he’s now becoming the latest target for confused NYR fans.

I hope they’re all good to go tonight though.

    lin
sadly, the mrs and I have actually watched a ranger game during a blizzard up in the mountains a few years ago with a generator powering the fridge, satellite, and tv……power was out for about 20hrs, but we watched the game!!

  41. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

btw, I was actually impressed/shocked that the satellite received signal through the whole blizzard!!

  42. My *ONLY* criticism of Boyle is that he does not play to his size. The kid is enormous (huge human) and he doesn’t play like it all the time. Too much finesse. Park that Humanoid in front of the net and let him body people out of the way and slam the puck home. I don’t need to see Boyle putting fancy moves on people and taking a soft, flipped backhand shot at the net.

  43. I’ll still blame Eminger on that 1st goal though…He has to be a stronger presence in front of the net and protect Hank…that is where we need him to be physical…

  44. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    orr
I think boyle has been very good all season, is someone bagging on him here?

I though mcdonut should have stayed on, malik was a cone for a few season for us back there and he could have at least given Zherdev something else to think about for a couple of seconds. Either way if he had it to do over, my guess is he would have stayed on, but we won and it is a learning process so no big deal!!

I hate the stupid skills competition with a passion, a great game ruined at the end by a gimmick!!

  45. It’s true NYR – Eminger loves to get physical (cue song please) in the neutral zone. He is a big presence there. It seems to me like almost no Rangers D-Men actually succeed (or even try) to clear people from the crease enough.

  46. Noah-rury, 28 on

I have a completely serious question that may turn out to be a very dumb one:

Is that actually Eminger’s wife that posts on here from time to time?

  47. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    manny
I agree on that. Hopefully, the confidence on his skates will come with him playing to his size more in the future!

WOW!! Haven’t seen a shine box distributed in a while, what a bouche!

    NYR
you don’t like eminger do you…LOL!!

I just looked at the upcoming UFA list, a few interesting guys out there for sure

  48. Yeah, a few people here were turning on him after he passed up a shot, that led to Connolly’s goal in the Sabs game, which was the game winner.

I agree, staying on probably would have given Z something to think aboot, but he came in fast. I think McDonut was already near the blue line, so he wasn’t in good position to begin with.

Doesn’t matter now though. He still = Monster!

EXTREMELY WELL SAID!!!!! Welcome to the good side of the force!!!

  50. So, we are blaming Boyle now? Sheesh, he’s been playing well above our expectations all year…

  51. Thanks Wicky. I just want to see these guys play good *hard* hockey. You’re right – game is never over until someone cries.

I wanted to see the Phlyers “tinted” visors stained with their tears!

  52. wick, yeah, I’ll have to admit, I’m not biggest Steve Eminger fan!! How could you tell? LOL!

    Manny, where is your sidekick?

  53. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    Boyle has been awesome IMHO!!

  54. I miss eddie. It’s pretty quiet without him. Although when he isn’t here I tend to act more like the grownup that I am. So that is probably better for everybody else. My guess is that eddie went to pick up one of the little eddie’s from school and stopped off for a wine tasting or two. He is currently drinking out of the swill/spit container a la Paul Giamatti in Sideways.

  55. It’s true Wicky – Boyle has been awesome. That is why a few days ago we were all cheering for him to be “Most Improved.”

  56. orr, did you check out that Emily Atack? I never watch any tv or cable, but a friend of mine from London rec’d the show ‘theinbetweeners’ and its hilarious…like Benny Hill meets Seinfeld.

    LGR!!!

McDonagh has such sweet footwork. Skates effortlessly. Reminds me of Subban in the way they both are incredibly agile and smooth with their smaller strides, and maneuvers in tighter areas.

Even though Flyers obviously pressure us more offensively, this Rangers team has a bend but don’t break defensive mindset. Yesterday’s game was very enjoyable. I think the disappointment in not making the playoffs isn’t that we miss out on a chance for the Stanley Cup, but we would lose getting the youngsters experience and seeing this team, which is a very tough team, in the heightened excitement/intensity of the playoffs.

  57. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

Did you guys realize that we are 28 and 0 when leading after two periods….WOW!!!

  58. Yea that stat is literally unbelievable. This team RULES at 3rd periods. Absolutely Rules. We also rule at Skills Competition (no matter how horrendous, comical and pathetic it is).

Now if we could only play great 2nd periods too…

  59. Mao – McMonster and P.K. Slewfoot is an interesting comparison. I can see the similarities. That makes me really even more excited to have McMonster on our team. He also handled the elbow to the head really really well. Classy guy unlike Slewfoot. But they are similar D-Men in their ability to flat out skate.

  60. I was looking at the previous games against the B’s and noticed this the last time either team scored more than 3 goals in one of their games (not counting the team goal for a S/O win) was March 2009. You have to go back to 2006-07 to find a game where either team won by more than 2 goals.

  61. ORR!! You really know your women. I am impressed. Between your link, which you taught me about, and all these girls to google (safe mode turned OFF thank you very much) my work day has become so much more enjoyable.

  62. CapeBretonRangerFan on

Let’s hope the Bruins roll over and play dead like they did the last game.

  63. Are we really getting down on Boyle? And now I have an image of ilb in skinny pants doing the disco duck? WTB has happened here in a lousy 9 days!

  64. Phew! Hey Manny, just doing best I can to catch up. No way I’m reading 9 days of comments :)

  65. Thanks NYR, and to Julie and Tiki for the welcome back! To the rest of you all, where’s the love?? Geez…..mama would be very hurt if she weren’t so tan and fabulous right now :)

  66. LMAO “mama would be very hurt if she weren’t so tan and fabulous right now :)”

  67. well, that’s much better! ddeb, that would be both :)
