Now it’s official: Zuccarello demoted

Here’s the announcement from the NYR:

New York, April 1, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Mats Zuccarello has been assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Zuccarello, 23, has registered six goals and 16 assists for 22 points, along with four penalty minutes in 41 games this season.  He leads the Rangers with nine power play assists, and is tied for sixth with nine power play points.  Zuccarello also leads the team and is tied for fifth and second in the NHL, respectively, with five shootout goals and three shootout game-deciding goals, and ranks second on the Rangers with a 55.6% shootout percentage.  He has posted four multi-point performances this season, including a career-high, three-assist effort on January 25 vs. Florida and his first career multi-goal game with two goals on March 6 vs. Philadelphia.  Zuccarello made his NHL debut on December 23 vs. Tampa Bay, tallying a shootout goal in the contest.  He recorded his first NHL point with a power play assist on December 27 vs. the New York Islanders, and notched his first career goal with the overtime game-winner on January 5 vs. Carolina.

Zuccarello returns to Connecticut where he has registered 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points, along with 16 penalty minutes in 33 games this season.  He recorded 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in his last 21 AHL games with four goals and five assists in his last seven contests prior to his recall on December 27.  He was tied for second among AHL rookies and ranked third on the team in goals, and ranked fourth among league rookies and fourth on Connecticut in points at the time of his recall.  He also ranked third on the team with 98 shots on goal, and was tied for fourth in assists and power play goals (three).  Zuccarello posted an AHL career-high, four points, including his first career hat trick in a 7-1 win vs. Bridgeport on November 7.  He made his AHL debut on October 9 vs. Charlotte, and tallied his first career point with a goal on October 15 at Albany.

The Oslo, Norway native signed with the Rangers as a free agent on May 26, 2010.

  1. Well, and congratulations to RR, folks! Have you noticed who is advertising on our page? MSG and NYR. Great job everyone! And special thanks to Tony from AZ!

  2. The legend of the Hobbit Wizard. NYR will tell you – this does not represent the end. Adversity only makes the Hobbit Wizard stronger. His feet harrier and his mulletish hair more mullety and thick. He will come back casting better spells and scoring from better angles. Count on it.

  3. I’ll miss you, little wizard guy!!!

Thanks everyone! It’s a counseling job at a women’s clinic. It’s part time, which means I’ll be keeping my food wench job for a while…

  4. MZA will bounce back next season. This is a good learning experience for him.

He isn’t entitled to a spot in the lineup.

I know, I know, why is Avery playing, why is EC playing? They’re not in the long term plans of this team. MZA *needs* playing time. Time which he wont get *here*. So, we can afford to play the two useless dopes in his spot.

    I’m not worried aboot him.

  5. been very quiet on the Zuc front. he did get assists but i think
Torts was expecting some more scoring power from him.

i said awhile ago that his feistiness was impressive but we needed him
shooting the puck and/or being creative and getting assists.
for some time that was happening but
he wasn’t doing it in the shootouts (lift the puck!!)
after the pp debacles on the isle
i guess it looked as if he needed to hit the refresh button
    as well as
he is able to be moved there without going through waivers.

hope this isn’t the end of the Zuc with the Rangers.
just re-focus for later this season or a more primed Zuc
    next season.

  6. I agree with bull dog, Wolski needs to play with other skilled players like gaborik otherwise his impact will be drastically decreased

  7. You got it NYR – Hobbit Wizard cannot be held down. Maybe we should rent a car and go watch him play in Connecticut. Probably more exciting than Rangers / Phlyers.

the hobbbbiiiiitttt wizzaarrrrrdd…..stick of destinyyyyyyyyyyyy….he play haaaaaaard….he play magic……. (this is a song i am working on)

  8. Carp
looked over your thoughts from last posting
and i think that the horrible pp with Zuc at the point
    was the last straw.

he just looked either angry or disinterested over the past
10-20 games and during that time he hasn’t been the
scoring threat or creative sort he was at the beginning.
he was even having problems on shoot outs
because he’d go with the move that got him success
and then didn’t add something, i.e. lifting the puck to complete the task
(more frustrating because it meant that opposition figured him out and
he didn’t change to improve his own good fortune)

i had been hoping that a beat writer would comment on Zuc
whether something personal is happening or if the grind of more than
55 games has gotten to him or…
because he did not seem as happy and involved.

  9. congrats to Sally?!?!

    (i’m just jumping on here)
why are we congratulating someone today?

  10. jpg- I don’t think it’s anything personal. Remember, he came from Europe and it took him some time to adjust. He had to change the length of his stick. He finally started to play well, and put up some decent numbers. And was a king in SO. But it’s a long season with ups and downs. Last month or so it’s all pure grinding and forechecking. He isn’t used to it. His ice time was cut, and he was benched eventually. His confidence is totally gone. He is questioning his abilities, and every small mistake is magnified by the importance of every game. He needs some playing time to get his confidence back. He’ll adjust. He’s got talent, and he will be back.

  11. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    bull dog
    no worries

  12. JimboWoodside on

I’m sorry to see that Zook got sent down. I hope that he takes it well and turns this into a positive thing – maybe he works on his game a bit down there and gets his confidence back.

    Congrats, Sally!

  13. jpg's sister on

CT, I LOVE foosball. My brother, JPG and I used to get challenged to play foosball games.

  14. I guess you want me to say congrats again, Sally? And remind you who is buying a round at W77 next time?

  15. The Fiance ALWAYS minds NYR. Always. We have to support the Hobbit Wizard. Maybe we can make a “Lord of the Ice” movie and he can star in it?

  16. my take on MZA o Whale

rangers play philly sunday. MZA is obviously healthy scratch for that one. wolski goes in. monday, rangers play boston, MZA scratched last game vs Bs. so scratched again.

he comes back for atlanta game thursday. they didnt want him to sit and not play for a week.

he goes to whale. plays alot and comes back.

what if the season comes down to another shootout and the hobbitt is in hartford? not gonna happen

  17. JimboWoodside on

I thought that he couldn’t be recalled unless there is an injury emergency? Carp?

  18. ilb, haha! No jpg didn’t know what he was congratulating for. Better plan… I’ll buy a round when you come to Buffalo!

  19. Jimbo, from what I’ve read, there’s some question as to whether Ocho Cinco’s recall was an emergency, since he replaced Talbot, and not Biron. If so, apparently, they might have one more move. If not, they will have to invent an injury (Wolski hamstring?) to get him back up here.

Imagine if this season comes down to a shootout and they don’t have him. Or Olli Jokinen.

  20. Congratulations on the job Sally!!! If they’re smart, they’ll make you full time and promote you within a month!! :)

By the way, I met Dubinsky in NY last night, and…….. well, a gentleman never kisses and tells!

  21. JimboWoodside on

Thanks, Carp! Strange–you would think that the front office wouldn’t take a chance on sending him down unless they *knew* for a fact that they could bring him back up. But then again, who’s to say whether someone is really injured? Does the league send in their own physician for a “second opinion”?

Yeah, I’d still rather see Zook than Cally or some of our other guys (Gabby?) in the shootout if we need a goal in these last few games.

  22. billybleedsblue on

the demotion is just a cover for what’s really going on… Zucs is heading to mount doom to destroy the ring…

if being this silly is what it takes to keep my mind off of last night,,,

  23. Well’ about all that Torts has left to rouse his charges, has been said.. Possibly the speech given by Henry V to his troops at Agincourt?

“and here we few, we blessed few, we band of brothers,”……”who sheds his blood with me this day, will e’er be my brother” “and will hold his
manhood high, …”that he served here on….”
…………………the playoff games to reach the cup… 2011.

A bit of Hollywood schlock…we can try it………..

  24. Dunno about you, but I’m planning to watch the Devils being officially eliminated from the playoffs.

  25. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Watching this oil spill disaster on NHL channel. Pretty cool show, but why the focus on the worst team in the league?

  26. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Is the pimp is around?….. My wife is visiting her parents this weekend…I am sans children and wife…just hung up my disco ball strobe light, got the polyester plaid pants and checkered shirt… Looking good and looking for action… And I am very very hungry… If ya know what I mean

  27. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Pronger has a set back … Will miss the rest of regular season YES… There is a shine some light on our heroes.

  28. Carp, any update on the Rangers gettin those points from the Islanders byfuglien up their lineup?? Or did I actually fall for an April Fools Day joke???

  29. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

It’s clear now that the organization is going for the Calder Cup (not the Stanley)! It finally makes sense why Zuke and Noberries are playing for the Whale instead of the Rangers! Duh!!

  30. JimboWoodside on

    Sounds hopeful, Eddie3….but Enroth hasn’t done too badly – 5 games, 5 wins….incredible!

  31. billybleedsblue on

Vibz, the NHL actually not only awarded the Rangers 2 points for what the Isles did to them last night, but they guarenteed NYR a playoff berth. between last night, and what happened in game 82 last year, the NHL felt so bad they awarded NYR no lower than 7th in the East.

  32. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Nyr fan – I am with on keeping the faith… Beat filthy on Sunday and rangerland will be brimming with cheer.

  33. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Actually want filthy to win… Have the players go on a 2 day serious binge and we kick their assens…

  34. The ring will never effect the Hobbit Wizard. He will stay immune to it’s power. He is strong. The Eye is strong but the Hobbit Wizard is stronger. He owns the +7 Stick of Destiny. None will stand in his way. Mount doom beware!

  35. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Jimbo – enron is playing’s to the craps crushing them tomorrow..

  36. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I haven’t heard an update on Crosby in the last 10 minutes… Anyone with real time immediate knowledge?

  37. JimboWoodside on

I hope so, Eddie – he’s got to lose a game eventually…law of averages, after all….

  38. JimboWoodside on

I want filthy to win, too – don’t want them going back home with a 2 game losing streak, waiting to pounce on our guys to end the streak…

  39. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Sweet Jesus… An episode on al arbour has morphed into an episode on mcCreary…looks like a byfugelin walrus….Arf arf arf arf arf…someone toss him a fish

  40. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

Got to stay positive, Eddie…I still want Stepan, Sauer Power, McMonster, and Anisimov to get some solid playoff experience…and, maybe, just maybe, Gaborik finally breaks out of his scoring funk and can carry the offense…

If anyone should have been demoted to the AHL today, its Fat Capuano, not Mats Zuccarello-Aasen

  41. JimboWoodside on

I wonder if the league is going to look at the game tapes for the end of the game last night, with the Isles bench instigating all the goonery?

  42. billybleedsblue on

Crosby update: Mary-O just trimmed the crust off the PB&J sandwich and is about to cut it diagonally before bringing it with a glass of milk to the basement for Cindy.

Up later, Mary-O tucks Cindy in and takes the plate and glass back upstairs to the kitchen after story time.

  43. I want Flyers to win two. You don’t want them go back home after two straight losses. But most importantly, if they win- the Devils are officially eliminated. By the way, Chico and Doc said nothing about that.

  44. Lol, guys. About an hour ago there was a headline on TSN mentioning that Crosby practiced with his team second day in a row. Do you believe this? Second day in a row!

  45. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Billy – you aren’t off by much.. I bet Mary o shakes it for him too

  46. Jimbo – We dont want the league doing that; the Islanders face the Hurricanes again.

  47. JimboWoodside on

Wowie Zowie! Two whole games in a row! This being the Pascual season, I wonder if the league is planning “The Resurrection of Cindy” special for the NHL Network!?

  48. JimboWoodside on

Tiki, I’m pretty sure that the Isles are going to return to form against the Canes…..

  49. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

All we can do is hope Crosby bumps his head in his crib while sleeping… Or his baby rattle knocking him on the noodle as he nurses from his pacifier.

  50. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Ricardo – if you are around, I am searing some ahi… Drinking some buttery chard… and enjoying the night with my fellow ranger freaks

  51. billybleedsblue on

lol, a shakeweight? ahhhhhh…those two were meant for each other…2 penguins in an igloo…

  52. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Pacioretti skated today for the first time… Wish him the best… Obviously, ditto for Manny

  53. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Tike – hopefully the mama brings lady luck.. That should read Harry reams-dyke in last post

  54. billybleedsblue on

ddebened lol i was almost afraid to click the link, but wow, thanks for the laugh! :D

  55. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Billy – that sounds so naughty… But so real – don’t ya think…any word on crosby’s 2nd practice…will he practice a third day? Still no word on how his poops are coming… Is Mary O helping him flush? Wipe?

  56. Orr, not to nitpick, but that damn dog is not flying first class. That seat is coach. Trust me. I know.

  57. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Kane just got 4 for an accidental, but vicious, stick to the eye of a blue jacket Dman

  58. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

As my sister went to Kentucky ( she was a track jock and knew Sam Bowie and Kyle Macy)… I am rooting for the cats

  59. I was wondering if it actually was first class. The article said first class, but it sure as hell didn’t look like it.

Or maybe that’s first class for dogs. I think they usually stick them in some box until they land.

  60. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

It Would be nice if filthy and devils each lose half their team to suspensions during this game…

  61. JimboWoodside on

Dammit! I go away from the TV for a few minutes, and Elias scores 2 goals…..Bah!!

  62. Nah, Eddie….Surprisingly quiet on that front. Very sloppy defensively by both teams, though…

  63. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Gorgeous day out in california’s central coast..80’s no wind, and the air is fragrant with the sweet smell of flowers blooming..

  64. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Ilb – NHL channel is showing the feed on NHL on the fly.. Devils with a pair of 2-1’s

  65. I’ll tell you, the Flyers all of sudden are not very deep defensively without Pronger.

  66. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I think that I will watch caps-buff game as opposed to hoops tomorrow tho… We will see

  67. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    nice quote from Henry!!!

you are buying us drinks at W77??

  68. Going to Caps/buff tomorrow with a Red Wing fan, about time I can root for the Caps down here

  69. Wicky going to W77, heck no, but has a very long straw, he’ll drink you’re milkshake.

  70. JimboWoodside on

So, if the Debbies don’t win outright, in regulation, are they eliminated?

  71. JimboWoodside on

Forget about the regulation part of the question – I guess that doesn’t matter?

  72. Jimbo, they have to get two points, in regulation or otherwise. Or they’re out

  73. Boucher- bush league. The Flyers defense looks amateur hour. In fact, defensively both teams look Mickey mouse tonight. And O’Donell’s skating makes Brashear look like Christy Yamaguchi.

  74. lol @ billybleedsblue…thanks….guess i got “Carp’ed” in a new way and i fell for the April Fools Day joke……

  75. Clarkson tried to engage Carcillo a few times. No go. I guess his skin is still itchy after he had his MZA kicked by Haley.

  76. eddie eddie eddie on

craig button on nhl on the fly talking about pronger “chris is not afraid to grab it and hold onto it”……say what

  77. eddie eddie eddie on

when deb placey smiles on tv, i have to turn my face sideways…tho, i think she is hot in a wierd way…

  78. billybleedsblue on

vibz, it’s cool, i was almost caught off guard myself earlier today when I read that. Not for nothing, I wanted to believe it, but, I guess someone else’s failed prank attempt earlier in the day had me on my toes. lol, funny stuff.

  79. billybleedsblue on

eddie x3, be nice to side of the face girl, just think about the gems she has to deal with around the studio. i used to kid that the surround sound was only working on one side of the room when she talks though. guess i’m not so innocent…

  80. JimboWoodside on

I saw Deb Placey on NHL on the Fly last night, just as they were doing a “live look-in” on the Ranger-Isles game. And at that time, the Isles got those 2 goals in rapid succession (3rd & 4th goals) and man, she was happy……

  81. great. now the flyers are going to be in an
extra “great” mood when we play ’em.

  82. Anyone see the behind the bench where the had stepan mic’d up? If so, I don’t know if u caught it but step was giving zuccarello the business and in one clip he’s singing the black and yellow song by wiz khadafi but in place of the course of black and yellow, he was singing zuccarello.. priceless. I wouldn’t worry about him, Hell be just fine. Torts knows best, I have faith in that.

  83. AyVeerE – that’s too funny, not that I had a clue before researching it but I think it’s Wiz Khalifa

(who is this Khadafi you speak of?)

    zuccarello, black and yellow, zuccarello,

  84. Ddebened.. ur absolutely correct. I get my political figures mixed up with rappers all the time

  85. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

I like Iggy too. In fact, I love wicky’s idea of trading Marian “Butt-Chin Gabby” Gaborik to Calgary for Iggy…Iggy would be a solid guy to have on this team as he closes his career…He is still one of the best snipers in the world…(so is Selanne)….Hall of Famers…

It’s too bad that incarceratedbob guy was wrong about Iggy!!

  86. VH1 pop up video:

Khalifa’s family settled in Pittsburgh thus explaining “Black and Yellow”.

  87. billybleedsblue on

ha, ty AyV for da link! I hope these guys get to play together for many years to come.

  88. That what we all hope, keep them together a build that team mentality and were going somewhere. These guys r so tight and its awesome to just even get a glimpse. I wouldn’t hate an hbo special on our boys..and for more teams and sports for that matter.

  89. JimboWoodside on

Fischler has never gotten over his feud with the Ranger organization, even though they’ve hired him back.

  90. billybleedsblue on

Carp I never liked Daneyko so much as tonight when he was butting heads with Fischler over the Gabby hit.

As for the Rangers team, I gotta say that if they keep this roster, or as close to it as possible, it wouldn’t completely kill me to see them miss the playoffs. I’m also of the opinion that the Rangers will make it! I’m just saying!

  91. billybleedsblue on

ouch, Pelfrey 10.38 ERA to start the season…it’s gonna be a long one. Stephen Colbert last night said, “It’s baseball’s opening day, better luck next year Mets.” Ouch.

  92. I like Fischler- his best stuff is as a historian though, if he’s going to offer the opinion stuff -keep it real – abandon the schtick, we see enough of that with the like of Milbury and Roenick

AyVeerE – LudaChristie, you gotta get his latest CD

  93. I fully agree with whomever suggested there be a committee of ex pros to determine suspensions questionable hits.

  94. JimboWoodside on

As a hockey historian, I respect Fischler – but when he starts talking about the Rangers, I always keep in mind his very long “feud” with Garden management, and his *insufferable* partisanship for the Icelanders when he got a job with Sportschannel.

  95. Oshawa Generals win series, 4 games to 1 vs Kingston

    Chrisitian Thomas with 5 goals, 8 assists , +12 in 5 games

Bobby Orr, Eric Lindros, John MacLean, Rick Middleton, MDZ notable OG alumni

  96. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

How old is Stan? He has to be in his 90’s… Pretty impressive that he doesn’t just sit there drooling.

  97. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

LOL! The guy is senile! Look at this tweet from December!

    22 Dec
    StanFischler Stan Fischler

Time now for the shocker. Last year the “sleeper” team that went to the Finals was Philly. This year it will be the Rangers. Write it down.

  98. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

LOL! I am curious and want to see the kid play!

Also, should be interesting to see Zach Parise’s return this weekend…

  99. I bet he scores his first goal against us.

Why are the Devs even bringing him back? Let him rest for the remainder of the Spring and Summer.

I just don’t see the point in playing two-three games. It’s not like it will do him much.

  100. NYR_FAN – Just have a good gut feeling about CT.

Fischler live forever. The only way he dies is of unnatural causes. Like doing some silly segue into the possibility of a series between the Rangers and Tampa Bay; he overestimates his ability to take a lightning strike and gets turned into toast.

  101. JimboWoodside on

Maybe he wants to get in a couple more games in a Devils uniform – I hope the Devs won’t be able to sign him.

  102. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

I think he’ll get a long look during camp in August, ddeb…he’s apparently has the skills that this club needs…a knack for the net, supposedly better than his dad…

  103. If I’m Zach Parise I’m saying put me in 3 weeks ago. As an organization I’d be saying absolutely not, makes no sense. Except… he’s a RFA. A potentially big investment to make, I’m sure they want to see him at full speed.

  104. Just as pointless as it is for zp to play, its just as pointless to not..even if hr gets hurt he has the summer to recover. I think the devils r just hoping he’s puts the proverbial mail in our coffin…

  105. heya gang…

wtb happened last night? and now zucca demoted? srsly?!?!

apparently the sky is falling and the world is ending.

full disclosure, i saw not one second of the game, just saw the score and heard bits and peices of some of the carcillo that went on.

in better news, vodka is awesome and i love you all. :)

    back to partying…

  106. JimboWoodside on

    Whoa, Mickey – slow down!

You are very lucky to have NOT seen a minute of the travesty on Thursday night. It was gruesome.

  107. in better news, this team will scare the carcillo out of us, bring all of the Negative Nancys and Debbie Downers out of the woodwork, and drive us crazy(it’s not a drive it’s just a short putt as my father used to say) – but THEY WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!

  108. JimboWoodside on

She will probably see it on YouTube… wasn’t pretty – but neither was the whole miserable game.

  109. lol of course,I kid – but I’m sure we could tell her details of a tsunami that decimates a country etc, but not about a stupid hockey fight

  110. JimboWoodside on

Not one in which her guy Aves gets bloodied and beaten like he did on Thursday. He was going after Hamonic, but that Haley guy jumped right in.

  111. JimboWoodside on

If you send her the link to the video, she will swat your nose with her newspaper.

  112. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

I don’t girls that are too skinny, it is a turnoff. Curvy=sexy

  113. NYR_FAN says "Keep the Faith" on

Whoa…mega babe…yeah, she’s really thin! I could see why they would say she is too skinny…but not so much compared to the other girls in that picture…don’t all models look that thin?

  114. I could live with it, depending on how much rib we’re talking. I don’t like it when the ribs look like an animal trying to escape a bag, where it looks like it’s going to rip right through the skin if she moves too much.

I had an anorexic cat once. Every time I pet him, I’d hour a sour puss on my face. Fugger just wouldn’t eat when he got old.

  115. JimboWoodside on

Beautiful face! – actually, the tall gal next to her has a beautiful face, too, but she’s too thin, IMHO.

  116. As I watch that Gabby hit and think that there is even the slightest controversy about it I become less of a hockey fan. The fact that he got a double minor -eh I’m not sure. I DEFINITELY DO NOT WANT to see players getting hurt. But I sure as hell don’t want to see a game where players are THINKING when they are about to make a hit. I CAN SEE IT. I’ve noticed it already.
When I say “thinking” OF COURSE there is JUDGEMENT involved. But at this level it should be absolutely INSTINCTIVE. Nothing should have changed from what these players have known for all their hockey lives. Obviously, something has. So what has changed?

  117. MZA is no Marty St. Louis. Not by a longshot. I thought he was average/below average anyway. Nice find by Sather, but in a tight checking game he vanishes. Sorry to say it, but if he were traded or released tomorrow he wouldn’t leave any hole on this team. No more than Jarko Immonen’s departure had any impact on the Rangers future.

    Who Cares?

The NYR are right where we all expected them to be. Kudos to these guys for battling thru injuries and such.
