NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION UPDATE
New York, April 1, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Mats Zuccarello has been assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Zuccarello, 23, has registered six goals and 16 assists for 22 points, along with four penalty minutes in 41 games this season. He leads the Rangers with nine power play assists, and is tied for sixth with nine power play points. Zuccarello also leads the team and is tied for fifth and second in the NHL, respectively, with five shootout goals and three shootout game-deciding goals, and ranks second on the Rangers with a 55.6% shootout percentage. He has posted four multi-point performances this season, including a career-high, three-assist effort on January 25 vs. Florida and his first career multi-goal game with two goals on March 6 vs. Philadelphia. Zuccarello made his NHL debut on December 23 vs. Tampa Bay, tallying a shootout goal in the contest. He recorded his first NHL point with a power play assist on December 27 vs. the New York Islanders, and notched his first career goal with the overtime game-winner on January 5 vs. Carolina.
Zuccarello returns to Connecticut where he has registered 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points, along with 16 penalty minutes in 33 games this season. He recorded 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in his last 21 AHL games with four goals and five assists in his last seven contests prior to his recall on December 27. He was tied for second among AHL rookies and ranked third on the team in goals, and ranked fourth among league rookies and fourth on Connecticut in points at the time of his recall. He also ranked third on the team with 98 shots on goal, and was tied for fourth in assists and power play goals (three). Zuccarello posted an AHL career-high, four points, including his first career hat trick in a 7-1 win vs. Bridgeport on November 7. He made his AHL debut on October 9 vs. Charlotte, and tallied his first career point with a goal on October 15 at Albany.
The Oslo, Norway native signed with the Rangers as a free agent on May 26, 2010.

Torts was expecting some more scoring power from him.
i said awhile ago that his feistiness was impressive but we needed him
shooting the puck and/or being creative and getting assists.
for some time that was happening but
he wasn’t doing it in the shootouts (lift the puck!!)
and
after the pp debacles on the isle
i guess it looked as if he needed to hit the refresh button
as well as
he is able to be moved there without going through waivers.
hope this isn’t the end of the Zuc with the Rangers.
just re-focus for later this season or a more primed Zuc
next season.

and i think that the horrible pp with Zuc at the point
was the last straw.
he just looked either angry or disinterested over the past
10-20 games and during that time he hasn’t been the
scoring threat or creative sort he was at the beginning.
he was even having problems on shoot outs
because he’d go with the move that got him success
and then didn’t add something, i.e. lifting the puck to complete the task
(more frustrating because it meant that opposition figured him out and
he didn’t change to improve his own good fortune)
i had been hoping that a beat writer would comment on Zuc
whether something personal is happening or if the grind of more than
55 games has gotten to him or…
because he did not seem as happy and involved.

jpg- I don’t think it’s anything personal. Remember, he came from Europe and it took him some time to adjust. He had to change the length of his stick. He finally started to play well, and put up some decent numbers. And was a king in SO. But it’s a long season with ups and downs. Last month or so it’s all pure grinding and forechecking. He isn’t used to it. His ice time was cut, and he was benched eventually. His confidence is totally gone. He is questioning his abilities, and every small mistake is magnified by the importance of every game. He needs some playing time to get his confidence back. He’ll adjust. He’s got talent, and he will be back.

rangers play philly sunday. MZA is obviously healthy scratch for that one. wolski goes in. monday, rangers play boston, MZA scratched last game vs Bs. so scratched again.

Jimbo, from what I’ve read, there’s some question as to whether Ocho Cinco’s recall was an emergency, since he replaced Talbot, and not Biron. If so, apparently, they might have one more move. If not, they will have to invent an injury (Wolski hamstring?) to get him back up here.

As I watch that Gabby hit and think that there is even the slightest controversy about it I become less of a hockey fan. The fact that he got a double minor -eh I’m not sure. I DEFINITELY DO NOT WANT to see players getting hurt. But I sure as hell don’t want to see a game where players are THINKING when they are about to make a hit. I CAN SEE IT. I’ve noticed it already.
When I say “thinking” OF COURSE there is JUDGEMENT involved. But at this level it should be absolutely INSTINCTIVE. Nothing should have changed from what these players have known for all their hockey lives. Obviously, something has. So what has changed?

MZA is no Marty St. Louis. Not by a longshot. I thought he was average/below average anyway. Nice find by Sather, but in a tight checking game he vanishes. Sorry to say it, but if he were traded or released tomorrow he wouldn’t leave any hole on this team. No more than Jarko Immonen’s departure had any impact on the Rangers future.
