Senators at Rangers tonight

A lot of you were discussing this story from “Hockey’s Future” on the Rangers prospects yesterday.

I forgot to tell youse, I spoke with a guy who does a lot of scouting, and who has seen a lot of Chris Kreider this season.

This is what he had to say, his eyes popping out of his head, by the way:

“Kreider is the real deal. He’s an NHL skater with an NHL shot. I’m telling you, this kid’s the real deal.”

The scout also said that he thinks Ryan Bourque is going to be a legit NHL player, mainly as a penalty-killer type, and that he could be a captain/alternate captain kind of guy — though the Rangers have a bunch of guys who are going to be wearing letters for a long, long time.

Scoreboard watching tonight:

It is the fifth time in the last six years the Rangers posted 40 or more wins in a season, marking only the second time in franchise history the team accomplished the feat (1968-69 – 1973-74). The Blueshirts are one of five Eastern Conference teams to have registered at least five seasons of 40+ wins since 2005-06 (Montreal, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh).

The Blueshirts tallied six or more goals in three consecutive home games from Mar. 6 vs. Philadelphia to Mar. 18 vs. Montreal, recording 19 goals over the span. The last time the Rangers tallied 19 or more combined goals in three consecutive home games was Dec. 26, 1995 to Jan. 10, 1996 (20 goals). Friday’s contest vs. Montreal was the 10th time this season New York recorded six or more goals in a game, marking the 26th time in franchise history they accomplished the feat and first time since they tallied six or more goals in 11 games during the 1996-97 season. The Rangers enter tonight’s contest with a four-game home winning streak.

Henrik Lundqvist posted his 30th win of the season on Friday vs. Montreal to extend his NHL record by recording 30 or more wins in six consecutive seasons to begin his career. He also extended his franchise record by posting his sixth straight 30-win season. On Tuesday, Lundqvist turned aside 22 shots in a 1-0 victory vs. Florida to post his league leading, 10th shutout of the season.  It is the second time Lundqvist registered 10 shutouts in a season (2007-08).

Henrik Lundqvist faced 40 shots in a 5-2 win at Pittsburgh on Sunday, marking the fourth time this season he faced 40 or more shots in a game. He is 3-1-0 with a 1.51 goals against average, a .964 save percentage and one shutout in those contests.

Rangers’ forwards Ryan Callahan and Vinny Prospal rank first and second on the team in scoring, respectively, since returning from injury in early February. Callahan leads the team with 13 goals and 23 points in 21 games since returning from injury on Feb. 1 vs. Pittsburgh, following a 19-game hiatus due to a broken hand suffered on Dec. 15 at Pittsburgh. Prospal leads the team with 11 assists and ranks second with 16 points in 20 games since he made his season debut on Feb. 3 vs. New Jersey after missing the first 53 games of the season with a knee injury.

Since acquiring defenseman Bryan McCabe on Feb. 26, the Rangers power play has tallied 10 goals in 38 attempts (26.3%) in 11 games. McCabe has registered five power play points (one goal, four assists) over the span.

The Rangers have posted seven more wins and nine more points compared to last season through 74 games (33-32-9, 75 points in 2009-10), having tallied 21 more goals (216 this season, 195 last season) while allowing 21 fewer goals against (179 this season, 200 last season).  New York has also shown a six-goal improvement while shorthanded compared to 2009-10 (11 this season, five last season).

The Rangers lead the league in hits (2,116) and players with at least one game-winning goal (18), are tied for first in shootout wins (eight), seventh in goals for (216), fourth in road wins (22), rank fourth in blocked shots (1,172) and shorthanded goals (11), fifth in goals against (179), and are tied for third with a plus-37 goal differential.

About Author

  1. Good morning heads! Here’s to another Ranger win tonight!
Carp, where you going to be in Albany this weekend?

  2. Morning all, i read the article Carp its such a refreshing change to be thinking about where these youngsters are gonig to fit and when they will make the team. Instead of looking at the trade deadline and July 1st with fingers crossed Slats doesnt screw up i’m now more focussed on the draft and training camp to see what these kids can do.

What we want now is some long-term deals for Cally, Dubi, Arty, Sauer and Boyle which should be feasible given that most of Frolov, Prospal, Feds, Eminger, Christy and Gilroy wont be here next year (or in Gilroys case, will need to take a paycut to stay) – not to mention Captain conundrum and his 7m greenbacks.

In reality when Drury’s contract is finished (and Redden’s possibly bought out or voided if he goes to play in Russia/Europe) Slats legacy will be a young, hard-working, tough, talented bunch of players acquired in some astute trades (Prust, Boyle etc) or from the draft or young free agents (Girardi, Zucc, Gilly?). Who’d have thought that 4-5 years ago huh?

  3. p.s. sorry for the long post but dont get much time to read the blog at the moment, so trying to squeeze several thoughts into one post!

  4. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

Looks like the Rangers are all over the NY POST today, with Heartbreaker Prust in Page Six, and the Drury article in the sports section. HMMMM I guess it’s PAGE SIX PRUST now lol.

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. ukranger

    A matter of idle curiousity….
Are you presently living in England? Or are you from Engand and living here ( like an illegal alien)…… ( just kidding; my nephews wife was here 11 years til she was given her green card……..the reason for the delay was that she came from a country where terrorism existed….yep Ireland.) My next door neighbor has a daughter who has lived and resided in England for years now and she’s forever flying over there for extended visits/ Her daughter loves it there. I know I know, I’m probing..none of my business and all that, but it’s my natural curiosity…never know where a good idea may come from.

  6. fran – i live in England. My sis is married to a guy from California and her and my wife used to ba cabin crew for United so i used to get stateside fairly often until my kids came along. My first trip to MSG was during the Gretzky era, been back a couple of times since, but not for 5 years now. Hopefully the grandparents will help so we can come to NYC again and i can watch a game and the wife can shop!

  7. UKRanger – you go to games about as often as I do. Nothing beats the comfort of the couch and a fridge full of cold ones!

  8. I was just looking around at some pictures of Elizabeth Taylor when she was younger. I was born too late in life.

  9. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, I think it’s safe to drop Atlanta from the “games to watch” list, especially as far as the Rangers’ playoff chances are concerned.

  10. I have to say – I would REALLY like the Hurricanes to make the playoffs. I think they have a good chance to stop the Phlyers with Cam Ward in goal. I know it’s thinking way too far ahead but it’s just my random thought.

  11. Doodie Machetto on

I think Cam Ward is the most overrated young goaltender in the NHL. He is still riding his Conn Smythe from almost 5 years ago, and to me, hasn’t consistently done anything since.

  12. Carp, very cool tidbit about the scout you spoke with re: Kreider and Bourque! USA!

LOL! Lin, it used to be ‘Page Six Sean’…

    F5! F5! F5!

  13. I think he’s looked pretty good this year. I may be completely wrong. I think he can carry a team better than Ryan Miller (who I love for the Olympics – so it hurts me to say it).

  14. Doodie Machetto on

Dallas and Vancouver should switch divisions. Vancouver, a city located on the Pacific Ocean, is in the “Northwest Division,” the same as Colorado and Minnesota, while Dallas, a city in the exact east-west center of the United States, is in the Pacific. I know Detroit’s clamor for the Eastern conference since it is in the Eastern Time zone, but c’mon, Vancouver-Dallas is an easy swap.

  15. Kreider is going to be a stud but he is not NHL ready right now. I have a hard time believing that a kid who is 7th on the team with only 22 points in 31 NCAA games this season is ready to make the jump to the NHL.

While his broken jaw pretty much assures he’s going to come out, he probably should go back to BC where he has a chance to be in a leadership role and be their go-to goal scorer.

  16. Doodie Machetto on

Also, from comments made by Torts about a month ago, it sounds like Kreider and his family think staying in school is his best option.

  17. I strongly disagree, Doodie. I think Cam Ward is a top-3 goaltender in NHL, if not the best goalie in the entire league…even though he doesn’ have the flashiest numbers…

  18. Anybody else get a chill up their spine at the prospect of Drury returning to this team?

In all honesty, and I’ve made my distaste for Drury obvious in the past, what can he bring to this team?

Do his positives (faceoffs, blank stares) outweigh his negatives (can’t pass, can’t shoot, can’t skate, can’t hit, can’t block a shot without crippling himself)?

My brother treated me to the Panthers game Tuesday to cheer me up (wrecked my car Sunday night) and he noticed something: “See how few Drury jerseys are around MSG these days? How long before they’re in the 75% off bin?”

BTW, the Panthers game was an incredible bore to watch. Just painful. But I’ve been to two games in person this year and they’ve both been Ranger shutouts (other was against the Isles)…so I’m not complaining.

  19. I can absolutely see Cam Ward standing on his head through the first round and knocking out the Phlyers. I think that is a really tough matchup for the Phlyers all around and with his goaltending….watch out.

  20. CJP – as soon as they hit the 75% off bin you can buy one and get the number changed to +1 (24) and the name on the back changed to Callahan – Leave that “C” right where it is!

  21. NYR – you’re making me want to drop the “fried” and go with Manny only….decisions…

  22. Doodie Machetto

the reason Vancouver is in the Northwest is so all 3 Canadian teams are in the same division not to mention putting Dallas in the Northwest is a huge travel disadvantage as they have to sit on a long flight for all their division games

  23. LOL! I saw wicky call you that a couple of weeks back….and I stuck with it! Thought it sounded better than just “Man”…

PS: Is it really wicky’s birthday? If so, happy happy wickster!

  24. I think when it comes to Goalies we’ve got a pretty good one ourselves – he’s been a huge reason why our low scoring team have got this far – plus look at his stats:

Shutouts #1 (2 more than his nearest rival)
GAA #6 (highest of anyone who’s played 60 games or more)
SV% #6 (if you include Reimer who’s played only 29 games)
Wins #6 (although Kiprusoff and Price have played 6 and 5 more for 1 and 2 more wins respectively).

If i were shortlisting for Vezina now i’d go Hank, Luongo, Bryzgalov as my 3 but Ward, Price and Thomas could easily change that with a strong finish or a couple of shutouts.

  25. NYR – also – MAN is pretty generic. It could be anyone. I like my uniqueness. The benefits of Manny are twofold –

    1. With Manny Malhotra being injured it would be a nice to honor him….and
    2. Manny on Modern Family is an amazing character with a beautiful mother.

  26. I’ve had the discussion about Ward on other sites. His Conn Smythe playoffs is a big outlier compared to the rest of his career. He does seem to step it up vs the Rangers though.

  27. Doodie Machetto on

oleo, as opposed to the huge travel disadvantage they have of every game they play against a division rival being one or even two time zones away?

NYRfan, your assessment of Ward is exactly what I was saying about him being overrated. Top 3, possibly #1? That’s ludicrous. He’s very streaky. And unfortunately for Ward, he is usually just a slightly above-average goaltender. I’d rank him somewhere around 15 right now, and if I was building a franchise from scratch with an eye on prolonged success, I’d probably rank him around there as well.

  28. Doodie Machetto on

CTB, I’m with you. He’s just OK, but has this one Conn Smythe that make people think he’s some kind of wonder.

    He’s the next JS Giguere.

  29. He might be streaky but boy oh boy when he is on, he is on.

I can’t believe a contender didn’t pick up Vokoun. Could you imagine that guy on a hot streak in the playoffs?

  30. UKRanger

I don’t see how you can make a Vezina shortlist and include Bryzgalov and Luongo (and Hank for that matter) over Tim Thomas or Pekka Rinne. Both those guys MUST be finalists and the 3rd guy is a really close race between Lundqvist and Price.

Personally, I would give the Vezina to Rinne and should Nashville advance deep into the playoffs he should be in the discussion for the Hart…

  31. CTB – I am upset to hear that you split your time between this and other blogs. Why The Face? We aren’t enough for you?!?

  32. NYR FAN

I agree with you….Cam Ward is far from being over rated.
He has a taut style, and he has excellent reach, and conserves
his action…He has stoned too many top flight teams who thought they were going places, and I see no let down in his overall
behavior other than that brought about by some lesser team mates and defensive people. Canes have let some good people get away from them ( like Ladd for example).

  33. Thanks, fran. That is exactly my point. His goaltending skills are elite. I don’t think he is over rated at all. I’ve seen him steal so many games for Carolina over the years…(and not just against the Rangers)

  34. Doodie Machetto on

“Personally, I would give the Vezina to Rinne and should Nashville advance deep into the playoffs he should be in the discussion for the Hart…”

Trophies are for regular season only. The only playoff trophies are the conference trophies, the Conn Smythe, and the Stanley Cup.

  35. I am with NYR and Fran(ny). Ward is a great goaltender. He might be streaky but his low-points aren’t that low. He has great movement and great ability.

  36. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Whoa just read the article about Prust on Page Six.

And since it’s Page Six, it has to be true.

  37. As good as Ward is (and that’s very debatable) the Canes have only made the playoffs once since they won the Cup.

  38. Doodie Machetto

I know its regular season only but it still factors into the decision subconsiously even if its not supposed to. Personally, I would give it Crosby but since he only played in half the games, Rinne should get the award since he is certainly the most valuable…

  39. Manny,

Yeah I hang out with other groups too. I like them for their very quant-y, spreadsheet/chart-y stuff.

  40. Ok I read Page Six. I can’t believe it. A professional athlete cheating? No way. I can’t believe it! This must be the only time.

After a simple search, I would suggest he stick with his current girl and ditch that childish Gossip Girl.

  41. “It was all that Dan Marino’s fault, everyone knows that. If he had held the ball, laces out, like he was supposed to, Ray would never have missed that kick. Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie, son?”

  42. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Seriously…leave that Gossip Girl “actress” for someone like Dubi. Dubi probably loves the show anyway.

  43. Doodie Machetto on

Let’s see where Cam Ward is in a few years. I’m guessing in a platoon with a mediocre goaltender.

  44. I can just picture Dubi with his hair all filled with Brylcreme or Royal Crown or whatever he uses, eating his popped corn and watching Gossip Girl. “Oh no she didn’t!”

  45. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Dubi and Cally have Gossip Girl viewing parties I’m sure. Then they take out all their bottled up angst from the show to the ice.

  46. “This is double-paned sound-proof glass. There is no way that neighbor could’ve heard Roger Podacter scream on the way down with that door shut. The scream she heard came from inside the apartment before he was thrown over the balcony and the murderer closed the door before he left. Yes. Yes. Oh, yeah. Can ya feel that, buddy? Huh? Huh? Huh? “

  47. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Soon it will be front page prust. SI is contemplating a name change…..Prust Illustrated. #8 has his own sports channel as ESPN = entertainment, sports, Prust network.

  48. Channel 8? ESPN 8 The Ocho? Dodgeball? Is Cotton McKnight going to be featured on it?

  49. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Note: They are referring to the actual dodgeballs…

    Cotton: “He’s ball-less now.”
Pepper: “He doesn’t have any balls, Cotton!”

  50. Zipay and Gross tweet that Staal is skating with Girardi this morning. Gilroy and Avery appear to be Prucha’d.

  51. Good morning all! Michelle Trachtenberg? Oy. Talent challenged….If you’re gonna cheat, aim higher dude.

  52. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Very true…just didn’t want Carp to get itchy with the ban button.

“Dodgeball” is actually not a great movie, but Jason Bateman is hilarious.

I love when Vaughn puts on the blindfold…

Pepper: “He will not be able to see very well, Cotton.”

  53. Noah – I was just having that debate in my head – “Did I undervalue Dodgeball?”

I don’t think I did. Bateman is classic. There are some really great moments in there but all-in-all not the best movie.

Mama – Aim Higher!? How about “Don’t Cheat!” I guess Prust is young though and he can make mistakes. I do agree he should aim higher though…that girl is childish – at least aim higher in the age bracket.

  54. Btw Laurel

i’ve heard that Avery and Snooki hooked up last week! They kind of look good together

    “Snooki wants to smoosh smoosh!”

  55. Mannyfried

    i like that! Shiksappeal!!

ok ok…lets get back to hockey…

i like this line from the hockey future article “Of all the Rangers’ prospects, Thomas has been the most surprisingly positive. Currently leading the OHL in goals and in the top 10 in total scoring, Thomas has opened eyes as a possible future elite NHL player.”

if this kid can turn into Zach Parise…oh boy, how sweet will that be?!

  56. Sorry i disagree about Rinne – i dont think Nashville ride him like the other teams ride their star goalies. He has a good save % and good GAA but too many losses and he only has a .500 record, 28-20-8. (To be fair Ward is 31-24-9 which is worse), if it wasnt for his current win streak he’d be stuck with about 25 wins which is not Vezina worthy for me, not when they play such a safe game. I’d have Rinne in the top 10, but not in my final 3.

  57. i just looked up his birthday… he (Thomas) was born a month before i came to United States!

  58. 4generations 4 cups on

I’ve been thinking lately, ‘heads, do you think if Drury came back for the playoffs the Rangers would benefit?

  59. Wait – Holy hell. Avery and Snooki? That is a fair fight in the sack. Thanks for the visual 3CP.

  60. I’ll give Rinne a break on his W-L-OTL record when Nashville is 25th in GF. .930 SV% and a near 2.00 GAA is really impressive.

  61. 4Gen – To answer your hockey question: Drury coming back for the playoffs would (in my humble opinion) KILL this team. He would have to be fit in somewhere of that silly “C” on his shirt and his salary and it would completely mess up the chemistry.

  62. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Honestly, is the slight uptick in faceoff wins worth it?

Drury simply does not fit into the style of play anymore.

  63. 4generations 4 cups on

I mean I totally agree with you Manny. I think that if Drury had stayed healthy for about 50 games and scored 10g/10a around there he’d be extremely valuable. I just have absolutely no idea where his scoring confidence has went. It really kind of bothers me to really think about knowing that the guy had such a friggin sweet snipe in Buffalo then comes here and TANKS it hard.

We got the raw end of the Briere/Drury choice. But who knows? Maybe a playoff run is JUST what Drury needs, as it rejuvenated Briere into a great scoring character once again. I just really wish we knew why he couldnt hit the broad side of a frigging barn.

  64. Doodie Machetto on

UKRanger, I don’t give wins too much power in terms of rating a goaltender. If your team only scores one goal a game, you won’t have many wins. I think Thomas’ slump since the all-star break cost him the trophy. He also just hasn’t played in enough games for my liking. I think a goaltender needs at least 60 games to be eligible because that’s really the line at which you are a clear starter and not a platoon guy. Thomas isn’t going to get there, making him a platoon guy. Platoon guys shouldn’t be considered the best goaltender, or else they wouldn’t be a platoon guy.

    My vote is with Rinne.

  65. I would love to know the answer also. Drury looks like he just broke this season. Maybe he comes back, wins some faceoffs and plays good PK and PP minutes. I doubt it thought. I think you’re right that he has no confidence and NYR is right that he does not fit the style of play anymore. He is the odd duck out.

  66. If we need a faceoff guy I might actually prefer Kris Newbury to Chris Drury in the lineup.

  67. 4generations 4 cups on

Its really kind of depressing isn’t it? He was just a great player, great hands and coordination with speed and a knack for the net. He’s just a shell now. I have a feeling he’d do FANTASTIC in a place like Carolina, where they have a great fan base, a good team (usually) and he can get out of the spotlight.

I dont care for Drury anymore honestly, im just curious as to where the eff he went.

  68. re: bourque…UGH! the dreaded penalty-killer type??? No, thanks…we like our penalty killers Dubi and Callie-like tyvm! I’d take three lines of dubi and callie every day of the week. Love ’em both. But as a fan the top line on the Ducks is sure a ton of fun to watch.

  69. It is depressing. Especially when we are paying him, taking the cap hit, calling him Captain and stuck with him because of a No Movement Clause. I am sure he isn’t happy about it either. He must have some idea that he just isn’t effective anymore.

  70. Although – Drury had leg and hand injuries and maybe they are more serious than we know.

  71. 4generations 4 cups on

I just wonder what the hell got into his head? Maybe it was Torts screaming in his face– he doesnt seem like the character that would respond to that. The comment earlier in the season when he was asked about the p-kill was straight up something that pissed me off. ‘Ask the 10 guys that play the Powerplay’ like, what? Is that jealousy or spite? Is that a general malaise or is that just the way he is? Thats a really confusing comment honestly, and started a lot of thick questioning about Drury’s presence. Im almost certain he’ll be bought out this summer/retire, it’s just not going to happen another year in NY.

I’d love to call Callahan my Captain because he is somebody who i idealize the model of Ranger to be. Heart. Soul. Grit. Hands. Power. Will. All these things fit guys like Prust, Boyle, Prospal, Dubinsky, Staal, Sometimes Girardi when he isn’t staring at the puck, MZA (absolutely) so on and so forth. Fedotenko! That is the epitome of the perfect Ranger. A survivor that made his way no matter what, 9g, 12a, great player and great heart. Never bad positionally and always a great guy to have. We actually have a team character. As you said— Drury does not fit the description.

  72. Doodie Machetto on

Callahan is really just a smaller Graves. I bet he sticks with the organization after his career as an ambassador also.

  73. Love Fedotenko. Love Callahan. Love this team. LOVE IT.

Drury is out. You’re right. His comments seem very odd for someone who is supposed to be the Captain of the team. Very spiteful. He thought he wasn’t being utilized properly and when someone takes that route it’s hard to turn them back. Now he is a hollow shell with no confidence who played with bitterness and anger and when things didn’t go well he blamed the coach. Those are all assumptions.

  74. The comments of the crowd around me Tuesday night at MSG summed up what the fan base thinks of Chris Drury: Useless, hopeless, clueless and the worst captain in recent memory.

Bringing him back in the lineup would bring the same reaction as “Roger Dorn Night”

    A big “WHY????”

Retire and make your pizza, Chris.

Injuries aside, he looked like a very old, very slow, very small player at the best of times here.

  75. He may be one of the lucky few to afford the lower bowl seats next year. Probably only a partial subscriber plan.

  76. Maybe he can open up a pizza stand at the garden. Cheer the team from the wings where he makes his pizza. Grow a mustache. Dress like Luigi from Mario brothers. The whole deal.

  77. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Does anyone know how long the MSG renovation is supposed to take? 2-3 summers?

  78. 4generations 4 cups on

LOL MANNY! I just wish we had something to do with his cap space, we’re gonna be needing it this summer for sure. A lot of out guys are in for a good raise, Dubinsky deserves around 3.5 million at this point in time but who knows how he plays come the playoffs? Hopefully the Rangers can make it in and do well, they’re finally a team with a personality that i can relate to, not this patchwork crowd of ‘guys’ that call themselves at team.

  79. Drury should donate his salary, pro-rata, to the players who filled in for him while he was being useless and making pizza. I think you’re right, Dubi would get a nice chunk. Stepan would get some. Callahan would get some. Newbury even. Why not?

  80. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Honestly…why rush Staal back? I would’ve let him rest tonight and Saturday and bring him back next week.

But, if he says he’s fine, I guess he’s fine.

  81. Beware if MSG starts putting that ProFiles:Chris Drury back into heavy rotation…that’ll be one of the signs of the apocalypse. lol

Think of how bad the propaganda would be from Sam & Joe if Drury did come back.

Big game tonight…gotta take these two points. Keep the pedal down.

  82. Quote from that piece of Carcillo/Cooke Matt Cooke – Cooke told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review late Monday in Detroit that he ?made a mistake?? when he landed an elbow to the head of New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh. ?I?m sorry to my teammates, my management, my coaching staff and my organization,?? ….erm, what about the guy who’s head you tried to take off ?

  83. 4generations 4 cups on

UKRanger– Cooke doesnt give a Byfuglien. Sorry, no apologies from that piece of Carcillo…

  84. lost in the winning streak has been the play of Stepan. He’s been playing rather poorly the last 5-6 games and despite scoring against Pittsburgh, he’s slowed down a lot.

I wonder if Tortorella would consider scratching him just to give a break since Stepan is on pace to almost double the amount of games he played last season…

  85. It looks like they’ve been giving Stepan about 12-14 mins a game except during the Pitt game where he sat the Gaborik line in the 3rd because they were beyond awful defensively. That is down from his ATOI before the streak. Because they’ve had a few big wins it’s hard to say that anyone has been playing that poorly, but I wouldn’t say Stepan has been playing poor just unproductive.

  86. It looked to me like Stepan has been a little weak defensively lately. Maybe it’s just one play sticking in my head. I did notice that he had diminished ice time. I think at this point let’s just make the playoffs. Whatever we need to do let’s do it. Sit Stepan, Play him 60 minutes a game. I don’t care. WIN.

  87. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

It was predictable Stepan would hit the rookie wall. I don’t think he’s been dreadful though.

I’m sure Torts has a handle on Stepan’s playing time and the rigors of a full NHL season.

  88. Drury could make a great MSG mascot! He could dress as stuffed dough (no pun intended) pizza slice and walk around the Garden offering “buy two slices get third free” deals! Could be fun!

And in free time he could be that ultimate Rangers fans he always wanted to be! He could even enter the “Million dollar center ice shot” and who knows, maybe he’ll become the first ever to win it!

  89. He would never make that shot. I like all those ideas though 3CP. I just think that Drury has enough trouble hitting the freaking net let alone a tiny puck sized hole.

  90. stal is playing tonight.

drury would help in the playoffs since the rangers suck on faceoffs. 3rd worse team in the nhl on faceoffs with AA and stepan being especially bad.

drury would replace 1 of the 2 softies with skill but soft(ec or Wolski) and he would be a net help…………

i wonder how bad his knee was drury always looked behind the play…….

  91. cam ward is a very good player who see’s more rubber then any goalie in the nhl………

  92. Apparently, Bobonobski or whatever his name is has been stinking up the place lately. LOLOLOLOLOLOL. Gawd, what a bunch of stubborn fools in Flyer management! Not that I’m complaining, though.

We might see the Flyers go the cup finals only to have their talent challenged goalie (be that who it may be) let in 2 soft goals like Leighton did last year.

Incredible given the talent the team has beyond the net.

  93. Jim – I cannot believe the Phlyers did not pick up a goaltender that doesn’t have the potential to stink.

  94. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, he’s better than a few goaltenders, sure (although I think at least one of Varlamov/Neuvirth/Holtby will eventually be better than Ward, possibly all 3), but that doesn’t make him a top guy. Just a middle of the pack guy. I’d take Fleury, Thomas, Price, Lundqvist, Miller, and Vokoun over him right now in terms of goaltending in the East.

In the West, I’d take the starter from any playoff team other than Howard, Quick, and Hiller’s replacements (but I would take a healthy Hiller, easily), Kipper, and Backstrom.

That’s 14 goaltenders I would take over Ward, 13 of whom are currently active.

    He’s just OK.

  95. Happy 26th, wick. I was going to get you a crease-clearer for your birthday. couldn’t find one.

    Mannyfred being Mannyfred.

  96. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, the Flyers couldn’t fit Vokoun under the cap without trading some salary away.

  97. Ward’s issue, I believe, is a ridiculous lack of consistency. It’s normal to a certain extent, especially with young players, but this guy now is really a veteran and his down streaks can last several games.

That said, I don’t think he’s horrible when he’s off – he just isn’t brilliant like he is when he’s on.

  98. Doodie Machetto on

Jim, bingo. Most of the time, he’s just an average goaltender. I’d rather have a consistently excellent guy than a guy who is OK half the time, and lights out the other (not that I think Ward has shown any consistent lights-out ability this year, but he has in the past).

  99. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    Morning ILB and all!!

Wickster 1 thanks you very much (as you will see later)!!

    NYR (and everyone else)
Not my birthday, but the oldest wickster turns 3 today, but thank you for the Happy 26th anyhow!!!

Here’s hoping eminger stays in the line up and I would really like to see him paired with staal again!

  100. That is pretty good Carp. Manny being Manny yesterday involved Manny Ramirez hitting a line drive into my fantasy team’s star pitcher’s head.

Thanks Doodie. I couldn’t understand why they didn’t just get him. He was probably close to free with being a Free Agent soon.

  101. Doodie Machetto on

Look at JS Giguere: Two great playoff runs, and a whole career of nothing else to show for it.

  102. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, Vokoun also has a NTC, and he and Florida are still talking. They like him there, so his price was probably a bit higher than a guy like McCabe, who they did not have any intentions on bringing back.

  103. Ward has consistently been outside the top 15-20 goalies in GAA and save % throughout his career. Take away his Conn Smythe and I think people would have a very different perception of him.

  104. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

Carp, you going to MSG today for the whole pre and postgame shebang?

  105. I thought he would waive his NTC to go to a contender. He isn’t that young and the Panthers are not really “close.” Am I wrong Doodie?

  106. IMO, Phillie didn’t chase Vokum because they couldn’t fit him under their very tight cap. We say it almost every year it seems, but gotta figure if the Flyers bow out again due to shoddy goaltending, they’ll look to address it over the summer.

Then again, Booby Clarke is still involved, so maybe not.

You guys realize that since Ron Hackstall’s good days, other than the short-lived Pelle Lindburgh, the Flyers have not had a true number 1 goalie. It’s beyond amusing when look at the list of alledged number 1’s they’ve deployed:

    There are others I’m forgetting, I’m sure…

  107. Maybe Florida was asking for too much. I know if I was them I’d ask for the sun/moon/stars.

  108. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

I still think the bruins are the best matchup for us in the first round…hypothetically speaking!

  109. Doodie Machetto on

I don’t think the Flyers add a goaltender. I think they like Bobrovsky and view him as the goaltender of the future.

  110. Doodie Machetto on

wicky, my vote is still with Washington. I think Boston can match our physicality.

  111. Bobrovsky is insanely young right? He had a heck of a start this year. Doodie is probably right that they ride him. Hard.

  112. wicky, disagree. They’re not as deep as the Flyers, but have better goaltending and still have a shutdown D in Chara. The Caps are their best matchup.

  113. Funny that Tampa is a bottom 10 team in D with a negative goal differential and most of the games with them have been low scoring.

  114. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

I honestly hope it isn’t the flyers!

  115. I want Washington. Tampa Bay would be BRUTAL. Phlyers scare me because we beat them once in an odd freakish victory. Bruins, Thomas scares me. I will be honest. He is really good. They are usually good in the playoffs.(hypothetical obviously). Obviously no chance of playing the Habs but I don’t really want to face them either.

  116. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

This is all IFFFFF the Rangers make the playoffs. Cannot stress that enough.

  117. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

Of the top eight as it sits right now in the leastern conf, I think buff and tb are the 2 weakest teams! I thank tampa is a great one game team, but over a series I think they are not so good!

  118. Yes — all my opinions are if, and only if, the Rangers make the playoffs. Totally hypothetical.

  119. wicky(grating PIBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

agreed, but I think they will. I said 6th seed for quite a while, sticking to it although 7th seems more likely!!

  120. Noah-rury-aal-(if Devils make the playoffs)-Noah, 28 on

I just want to make the playoffs and don’t care who we play. Gotta beat the best to be the best. Or…as Ric Flair says…”TO BE THE MAN, YOU GOTTA BEAT THE MAN! WOOOOOOOO!”

  121. Wicky (father of the birthday lad) – I said 6th also but I don’t know if I want it because it means the Bruins. That would be a hard, hard series.

  122. I think Buff is the weakest, kind of short on top end talent outside of Miller and occasionally Vanek. They’re also small up front and do not play a physical game.

TB still has the guns to give a lot of teams a run for their money, but I think their D is their weak link.

If Price plays well then Montreal is a tough out, but they’re so depleted right now and they sort of struggle to score goals (20th in the league).

  123. Hey, if Dublowsky, and Callaman are having Gossip Girl viewing parties, then invite me! It’s a good way for Dublowsky and I to bond! I happen to like that show :–P

LOL! Is that article true though? This is good news. Not that I condone cheating, but that Michelle Tratchtenberg is somewhat famous, so she could introduce other famous babes to the players, and they wont have to depend on Aves who will be gone after next season, or possibly this season.

Anyway, Go Rangers! Make it six in a row!

  124. Everybody (Canadian media) has been giving Stevie Y and Guy Bouche so much credit for Tampa’s season this year. I don’t think they’ve done anything special…there are 2 other guys that have done a hell of a lot more for the franchise…

What about St Louis and Stamkos? Does anybody really think Tampa would be anywhere close to the record they have now without those 2? St. Louis for the Hart?

  125. I read Larry Brooks’ column today about Drury. Here is the email I just sent him:

Love your straight forward, no BS reporting on the Rangers.

I disagree with your Chris Drury view. The guy is done. He is useless out there. A step slow almost everywhere. The reason he is OK on faceoffs is because he doesn’t have to be moving.

You cite the faceoff percentages over the past 8 games as 46.9%. What is their record over the last 8? I see it as 7-1. I take the wins over faceoff percentages every day. Stepan and Christensen score more than Drury ever thinks about. Boyle is going nowhere. Neither is Arty. Bringing Drury back does worse for this team. Does he bang people? No. Does he block shots? Yes sure but so do about 7 other forwards. Is he a playmaker? Not any more? Is he effective in the corners? Nope.

Drury should pull a Markus Naslund and skate quietly into the sunset and help the salary cap. He is done.

Also I hear from my sources that Drury is not even that excited to play hockey anymore.

  126. Great comments over at the B. Prust Sux Forum:

Then again I don’t know her, I only know him and all the girls he sneaks around with.”

Who are these morons? Own up to it guys.

  127. Good point New Newman – Drury does NOT bang people. That is apparently, Prust’s Job.

  128. Who is the “she” that person is referring to? I’m sure Prust being an NHL player has nothing to do with why she’s dating him.

  129. Hat Trick + Billy Madison Quote = Priceless

Frank: Who would you rather bone, Meg Ryan or Jack Nicholson?

Billy Madison: Jack Nicholson now, or 1974?

    Frank: ’74.

    Billy Madison: Meg Ryan.

  130. Good point CT – who is the SHE. Who could be “too pretty” to date a professional athlete. Last time I checked they all get hot girls. Even the hideous ones.

    oh…Except Lamar Odom.

  131. doodie

cam ward is 4-0 life time in game 7s. in my mind hes a top 5 goaltender in the game and i would make this statement right now if i could pick one goalie to win me one game do or die in the nhl right now it would be cam ward. i am huge cam ward advocate however obviously i hope he plays bad so my our rangers get in.

  132. Doodie Machetto on

If I were Prust, I’d seek out Brooks tonight and tell him to print a quote of him denying everything.

  133. Amen ORR!! He really got the raw end of the deal. My friend declared that Kardashian “ugliest celebrity alive.” I still think Kelly Osbourne gets the title…to each his own.

  134. Mannyfried

Have you seen Kardashian’s “raw end”?? lol

If you put all those three “ends” together, you can make one kings size couch!

My vote for “ugliest celebrity alive” – Amy Winehouse

  135. eric, I would take Ward too!

I am still shocked he didn’t start for Canada in the Olympics last year…

If you want to talk about an overrated goaltender, how aboot Luongo? What has that guy done in his career? And, don’t tell me a Gold medal for Canada…

  136. Ooohhh 3CP – That is a great pick. Winehouse is a monster. Not like Prust = Monster. More like Sasquatch = Monster.

  137. Amy is definitely on that list. She’s like a drugged donkey that can sing.

Luongo is a really good goalie, but he definitely is a bit overrated. Yeah, he won Gold, but that’s because he had some of the greatest players in the world in front of him.

He hasn’t gotten past the second round, isn’t that right?

  138. Yeah I think Luongo is probably the most overrated goalie out there. I bet the Nucks fans are hoping they don’t get Chicago in the 1st round.

  139. If we can’t talk about Luongo’s Gold medal then there’s nothing else to talk about.

Luongo is like Nabokov – world class choker.

  140. ORR!! Who is Kesha? I googled her and found some girl that looks like Sammy Hagar. Also, there was Kesha Cole.

  141. Pretty sure Patrick Roy’s record in Game Sevens (Games Seven?) was pretty horrid towards the end of his career. No goalie will ever play in enough to demonstrate they are any better or more “clutch” (a mythical concept at the best of times, as our esteemed Captain has shown) than anyone else.

  142. Kesha is some man-ish looking girl that sings stupid pop songs, or something like that.

She spells her name like Ke$ha. She does look like Sammy Hagar. She’s probably as much of a drunk to believe that she was abducted by aliens, like he is. Bwaha!

  143. That’s great. I love Sammy Hagar. He makes Tequila and ruined one of the greatest bands of the late 80’s.

  146. Yea – you’re right ORR!!

“Hey, psycho – we’re not gonna discuss this, OK, it’s over. Please get out of my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up.”

  147. I saw pics of this chick that Prust is dating. Not bad.

I’d prefer all these guys to date celebs. They’re all semi-rich. Can’t trust non-famous women! They might be Devs, Isles, Pens, or Flyers fans.

They’ll take all their money, get pregnant, and leave them with a kid, while they’re off in Hawaii having fun, and the player wont ever play the same!

I wish this would happen to Crosby!

  148. Yeah I’d prefer a goalie that’s good enough to allow series to never get to a 7th game.

  149. CT – Just take any of these guys – They never play in Game 7’s:

    Richard Brodeur

Ha! I can picture the conversation on the phone between the girl and Crosby. It would go something like this…

Crosby: Hey honey, where have you been? I haven’t seen you since “that night”
Gold Digger: Yeah, you gots me pregnant, I just gave birth to *your* baby
Crosby: Huh? You’ve been with a lot of guys, how do you know it’s mine?
Gold Digger: I know it’s yours because the umbilical cord were wrapped around his big lips to prevent him from whining when he came out
Crosby: Oh……..I’m going to have to talk to the Lemieux’s aboot this. I don’t know if I’m allowed to have kids. I’ll get back to you….

  162. Yea there should be some tense moments to say the least. I think I want the Bruins to win. It’s hard to avoid the desire to climb the standings.

  163. @Jbones72: @AdamRotter They showed her on the big screen during the game Tuesday night…great job MSG..breaking the “guy code”! ;)

    Hmm. Just friends, Prust?

I think that chick was the one who was banging the Italian guy on the Knicks. The guy they gave up to bring in that dork who hasn’t really changed their team for the better :–P

    Bwaha! Dummy Dolan.

  164. I’m NHL’s .500 at games at MSG this year 5-5-1.

Add in an extra win for a game at the Pebble.

They need to get me another game above .500 tonight!

  165. Sather’s “legacy” should be just what it already was here. Negative.

the only difference is that the salary cap, and then a coach named Torts, and the total failures of several big money free agent signings forced him and nudged him into changing his approach, against his usual ways, against his own willful judgment.

No, he deserves nothing but scorn for driving this franchise into a ditch for a decade, for treating the star dman like garbage, hiring hack coaches who were his buddies, and for being a pompous ass about it all too.

Just because a cap, and Torts, and Gordie Clark were able to overcome his incompetence long enough to right the ship does not mean he should get credit for circumstances he fought and success mainly authored by others.

  166. EEWWW the thought of A-Roid and Madonna makes me wanna vomit!

Thanks Mannyfried for making my “what to have for dinner” decision easy! I’ll have nothing!

  167. Think about it harder….I bet they did some WILD stuff. Oh man….Truth or Dare style!

Sorry. I made myself vomit. It’s those purple lips and her man body.

  168. I agree completely with the scouts assessment on Kreider and Bourque. I thought the exact same thing when I saw Kreider, Bourque, (& Stepan) win gold two years ago in the WJC for Team USA and then again at this years WJC, with Kreider and Bourque helping USA win bronze.

I’m very much looking forward to next season (probably even more so than this years playoffs) with Kreider – especially Kreider!, Bourque, & McIlrath, hopefully making the big club. McIlrath is already my favorate player in the league, even though he has yet to play an NHL game. I’d love to see him paired on the 3rd D-line with Valentenko next year! In NY – not CT!
