I believe the idea is that if the teams are working out a deal they can contact the league to ask for a small extension to smooth out the details. We aren’t completely done with the deals yet, folks.
You know what? Even with the quiet deadline day, I’d take this trade season filled with franchise-altering trades every few days than one day filled with deals for rental players.

Well think back to 1996 with Gretzky- the Rangers knew they could get him for nothing but money as a UFA, so he was traded to STL. The Rangers must know now that Richards will sign with them and only them on July 1 and if that’s the case then no reason to yield young assets for him. Yeah sure sounds like a good move. When is this team going to get off of the big guys adding toughness to the team and realize they need skilled players who can actually score? There are plenty of tough guys on this team right now: Cally, Prust, Boyle, Dubi, Avery Sauer to name a few are all willing to go take a few punches for their teammates.

This trade deadline day was so boring. I felt like I was watching a Devils game.
Weak deadline overall but remember McCabe filled the biggest need we had (Defenseman with a rocket from the point) that could realistically be filled this season without surrendering the motherlode. Could have pursued another scorer but it seems none were available and I wouldn’t have given what the Kings gave for Penner considering his cap hit next season.
I think Richards signs with us on 7/1/11 regardless. Next season will be better with him and possibly Kreider and Thomas up from a talent perspective.
