Dallas GM Joe Nieuwendyk on Brad Richards

153

Mike Heika’s Dallas Stars blog for the Dallas Morning News has quotes from GM Joe Nieuwendyk’s press conference after the trade deadline.

“In my mind, I wasn’t going to move him unless somebody knocked our socks off with something we couldn’t refuse,” Nieuwendyk said. “We’ve said all along that we want to sign Brad, and we still feel that way. We want to sign Brad Richards to be a Dallas Star for a long period of time.”

Nieuwendyk said Richards could play as early as Friday in Anaheim as he recovers from a concussion.

    excellent carp!

rent(al) is too damn high. Byfuglien hysterical!

Prust didn’t want to be responsible for killing a man on live TV. So he let Rolosson live.

I saw he had a tattoo on his right hand. It says “in case of emergency break something”

  2. I know.mza isn’t in CT. But the forehead that said he might is crazy. Have u watched a game lately. Ww step and Mza have been a magical concoction. Give them a yr to build it and we have an excellent 2nd or 3rd line.

  3. Blue Seat Horror on

Talbot must be pretty confused how to feel right now. Started in AHL, which was to be expected, got demoted to ECHL and then called up to NHL 2 games later.

  4. Yea why haven’t we called up someone with more than 2-3 games this yr.. kinda sounds dumb tonne but hey, I don’t get paid for.it so I have no say. But I agree why not a g from the whale?

  5. re-post:
we should have traded for anton khudobin i’ve seen him here in houston with aeros and he can play. Bruins traded for him today from the Wild. Last year he went 2-1-1 in NHL and this year he went 2-0-1 with a shutout of Canucks. dude can play

  6. In all reality, Conklin likely killed any market for a deal with his play this season but especially his play of late. For the year, Conks is 7-6-3 with a 3.11 GAA and a .884 save percentage. His recent appearances have mostly been struggles and likely scared off any potential interest for him on the trade market – 10 goals allowed in his last four appearances.

  7. they called up Talbot because he is not going to play. if they feel the need to rest Hank they will call up Johnson to play, and then send him back down again.

  8. Bull dog is right. Y bring up Johnson now, let him play his games in the Ahl and gain xp, then when its tome to sit hank, call up Johnson. Sounds right to me.

  9. Guys…can any of you honestly see Torts starting some unknown from jr’s over the final 19/20 games of this stretch? He’ll ride Lundqvist.

  10. Talbot’s coming off an injury and I’m assuming that was the only reason why he’s currently playing in the ECHL. Injuries aside, Talbot’s been playing the best of all the CT Whales goalies this season.

  11. Wow, you guys were a little busy on here today!
So, the team is still in tact? Good! I was a bit nervous about what I might see when I finally got on here tonight!

  12. and what if henrik has to leave a game and they blow a lead and it costs them the playoffs again. don’t forget, they missed the playoffs last season by one pt, and if they had a decent backup goalie then, they would have had a couple more pts in games that Henrik did not play.

    blame Sather

  13. It ain’t over til its over.. I hope hank can do it. We need these you.guys to get xp in the po.

  14. it is not sathers fault when the backup goalie gets hurt 2 hours before the trade deadline.

really the guy got hurt today during practice, how do you have a contingency for that????????

  15. Ya not sather fault he’s injured. But maybe we should have gone after a goalie.. then again. We don’t want to lose picks.. he had his hands tied. Let’s rid it out!

  16. Ya bit he had.no shot here. Ot.was better for montoya and.before.practice today we had two goalie better then him.. u are crazy for passing any blame in this situation. Something unexpected happened. We’ve done well with adversity. No need to point fingers on a injury. U lose any validity or respect when u act/write like this.

Anyone else in the mood for some Chinese? or perhaps some Thai? :P

  18. Here were his two options, 1) bring up a minor leaguer and salvage what u can or 2) pay a team future assets and or current assets for a rental goalie that will get 3 4 starts at the most. Sry, glen made the right cision.

  19. Decision*, yea ill defend sather cuz he did the right hung all yr long and even in times of.crisis. he’s got a backbone!

  20. AyVeerE… Just from looking at the CT Whales stats (off the Rangers website) periodically throughout the year. Johnson’s had an under .500 winning % for most of the season, while Talbot’s played very well when he’s been healthy.

Nice, Orr and somerset! What a coincidence!!

  22. Orr, Ur right typos will be the death of me..thanks for clearing it up I thought I was taking crazy pulls with someone saying Mza to CT. And Jonathan thanks for letting me know.

  25. Of course, in the midst of his lousy season, Conklin found the time to get a shutout at MSG, in typical style. (I’m aware that was a particularly awful offensive effort from the Rangers that game.)

The guy saying that Montoya is an NHL goalie is joking right?

    ***

    Mind your manners, NYR_FAN!!!

  27. Ya I would weigh Conklins success in that one game too high. We are not potent offensivly and st. Louis is a strong defensive team, which is also why Conklin isn’t that good, a decent goalie with a team with that good of d should have struggled.

  28. Reading Sathers presser…
What does “Drury’s the biggest question mark of all. I don’t think he will be back.”
    Mean??
Does his injury keep him out the rest of the season?
Are the Rangers going to buy him out and he’s done as a Ranger!?
Sather is like a politician sometimes

  29. Biron injury hurts, for sure. But how many games he would’ve played down the stretch anyway? I doubt he’d play until the Rangers are comfortably in the playoffs, or out. In this case, Talbot can play anyway. And if Hank gets hurt, haven forbid, it really doesn’t matter who is on goal- the team isn’t going anywhere.

  30. NYR_FAN is...not a fan of Blog Trolls who constantly change their name!!! on

Carp, “Pee Wee” is also one of Erik Christensen’s nicknames given by the Boneheads. I believe Orr gets credit for that one :)

    I prefer Fredo.

  31. Montoya the incompetent

For a guy who is a lousy goal tender, he has played 5 or 6 very good games for the Isles, and although he got stuffed his last game, his team didn’t give him that much support. I’ve seen quite a few worse this season.

  32. When we cannot win a single game – a single game! Vs. TB, PHI, and MTL this year it means we don’t have the offensive talent to contend- end of story. Making the playoffs is gravy for the young kids to get some exposure in the postseason.

Next year will be different and it begins with Dreary coming off the books, and continues with signing Richards and/or trading for another center, or best yet, stealing Zach Parise from the Devils via an offer sheet (which Sather wisely retained the ability to do). Then you take a look at Kreider, Hagelin, Thomas, and McIlrath. Then you see if you can sign a “good player coming off a down year” UFA or two to low $ 1-year deals. Does this make sense to you?

  33. Sorry, Sather was talking about he expected a lot of guys back from injury, and when he was asked specifically about the long-term guys, he said Boogaard could be back, but that probably not Drury … or whatever the quote was. But that was the context of the remark.

I think Pee and Wee for two little twin players is funnier than PeeWee (as in he looks like PeeWee Herman; even though he does). Pei Wei Chinese Food is not as funny as either.

  34. Goalies that could be backups that are/were on waivers this year:

    Ty Conklin
    Michael Leighton
    Pascal LeClaire
    Curtis McElhinney
    Mike Smith
    Martin Gerber
    Manny Legace

  35. NYR_FAN is...not a fan of Blog Trolls who constantly change their name!!! on

Makes sense to me. Good post, DJK. I hope Dreary retires…

  36. That’s the idea, DJK. Stay the course. So far what most of us predicted, happened- the team refused to give up the young talent. I don’t how much of that is Sather’s decision, its been known that Torts has a lot to do with it. I’m happy that mr. Dolan didn’t interfere. I doubt that Parise will be available, though

  37. The way Sather made it sound, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a “C” stitched on Callahan’s jersey tomorrow night.

Drury should give up the captaincy now if he is done for the year.

  38. One down...Thousands more to go on

    NHL Debut

    February 28, 2011

PRINCETON, N.J. – Former Charlotte Checkers right wing Hugh Jessiman became the 464th player to play in the National Hockey League after the ECHL when he made his debut with the Florida Panthers in a 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

The 26 year old registered two shots on goal in 9:31 of ice time for the Panthers whose lineup also included former ECHL players Kenndal McArdle and Tomas Vokoun.

  39. Boom Boom Bathgate on

If Sather could have exercised some patience and horsesense, we could have a lineup now of Montoya and Weekes in goal; Kalinin and Redden, and Ozolinsh and Backman as blue line tandems; and Jessiman, Hollweg and Todd White, as our top sniper “Killer Line.” Works for me.

  40. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Drury is more interested in “C” notes buying pizza, that the “C” on his jersey. Don’t give up the “C” Pizza Face, you are the most beloved, admired and cherished Ranger captain in history. Mess told me so.

  41. Drury is not going to retire, ‘heads. But they will most likely buy him out.
And if Richards isn’t coming here July 1st, it’s perfectly OK. He would be a tremendous help, but not for the money and years he will demand. Don’t fool yourself, he will not get a pay cut and he will be looking for long term deal too, perhaps his last contract. Even if Cam Hope creates a Pronger-like deal, it would still be too big of a cap hit. Just remember, this isn’t 1997 when our only plan B was Pat LaFontaine. We have enough our own kids maturing and getting better.

  42. We are enjoying it, Tiki, thanks. I was skiing all day while you all where biting your nails, sorry I couldn’t join you. But I was very nervous when I was checking my iPhone every time on the lift, I was really afraid at one moment that Sather would give in. Thanks again Linda for all you help. Texting FTW!

  43. Gotta love Deadline Day talk on this board…Montoya? Conklin? Personally I would have liked to see Marty get the start on Sunday seeing how Hank had problems with Tampa all year but going foreward the back up should/will get the two remaining games against Ottawa and maybe 1 or both Isles games. So pointless to blow assets on a backup since Marty will be back next year. On today though I really think Artie, DZ, or Gilroy should have been moved. Callahan, Dubinsky, Boyle, and Sauer all need deals this summer. Not to mention McCabe and Feds(assuming ties are cut with Vinny, Eminger and Frolov). I like Anisimov and think he has come a long way in a short time BUT he is a center and this team lacks a bonafide first line center. Kreider is coming in a year or 2, the StepChild is great, and E.C. is getting paid for another year and as Carp you point out the team is better with him on the Fourth line then a goon. The choice for next year comes down to Boyle or Artie, and I might be wrong in 5 years but im with B.B. over A.A. This is not to say that I think Richards would have been the savior and still don’t even if he comes to NY this summer. But with the RFAs it would be nice to get something for them if they are just going to walk away anyway. Or as I was hoping I would come home today to find we swapped RFAs( like a Anisimov for Zach Bogosian, who I still think the Rangers should look at this summer since it appears Craig Ramsay doesnt have time for him and he fits in perfectly with the stable of Young D in Ranger blue.) But back to the starting center conundrum. Looking around at the leauge, I think they need to make Chicago an offer they cant refuse for Sharp or roll the dice and try for next years deadline if the hawks dont offer him a new contract. But lets save all that for this summer. Put a good run together Rangers, get into 6th, and take Boston to 7 or hopefully 6.

  44. One down...Thousands more to go on

    The Maestro

I guess you were too busy composing but Biron is injured and is out indefinitely.

  45. Ilb, like I said, Richards will not be flexible esp cuz he’s finally hitting UFA status, plus we need to sign our leaders and more. It won’t work. It would be.nice. but it.also won’t work monetarily.

  46. I think maestro knows that. He was discussing what I was saying, y lose future and current assets to get a goalie that will play at most 3 games.

  47. Yeah, lets not get a Veteran backup, just in case Hank gets injured, and rapes our chances of making the playoffs.

If a goalie is put on waivers, Slats might have to take a crack at him. Anything can happen.

It’s not like Hank is one of the “untouchable” goalies in the NHL. One of these days, someone might actually injure him.

  48. Maestro: going foreward the back up should/will get the two remaining games against Ottawa and maybe 1 or both Isles games

  49. Very true Orr, but still the asking price would be high for any good goalie and a waiver goalie could be a good option but, y did they get waived?

  50. Hi gang. Glad to see the blog survived another trading deadline day. More glad that Darth didn’t do anyting momumentally stupid. Really sucks about Biron; hope Hank’s had enough rest. Thanks to Linda for keeping me in the loop via text.

I’ve had an utterly hartnelltastic day, so going to curl up with House and H50 tonight and think of nothing else.

  51. Maestro- the players mentioned could’ve been moved, but not for Richards. In terms of AA, just pay attention carefully how Torts has been using him this year. He already trusts him to play against the best opposing lines, and his offensive game hasn’t been fully developed yet. I believe he is projected to be one of the better two- way centers in the league very in a few years.

  52. AHH! i’m so glad joe signed richards, he’s such a big player in dallas and i don’t know how bright the playoffs would’ve looked if they traded him away…still wishin they would’ve done something maybe gotten a blackhawk?

  53. AA will be our #3 guy down the middle. Stepan. Has shown he has more of a scoring touch and he’s a very special player. I wouldnt deal AA for anything but I think we have some winners.coming so he could be.moved.in 2 yrs time. Gotta sell high ppl.

  54. Joe signed Richards.. more.like Joe was afraid to give Richards to boot and would rather make the playoffs this Ur and risk losingbhim then dealing for future. Franchise players.

  55. leetchhalloffame on

Carp – any chance Kreider signs after the collegiate season and gets a shot in the NHL a la Kenny Morrow-type situation. At his age he’s not a savior but I bet he would give the Rangers an offensive shot in the arm at the end of the season and playoffs.

  56. AyV, yeah, maybe they weren’t good enough, and were waived. But, look at Beer-On. He was putrid with the Isles, and wasn’t good enough for the Flyers, but he’s been good this year with us.

It could go either way, good or bad.

But, I wouldn’t put the season on a bunch of kid goalies.

And yeah, the asking price would be a problem, especially when your backs against the wall. So, it’s either a waiver-wire goalie with some playoff experience, or a nobody. The latter is not a great option, in my opinion.

  57. Leetch, Kreider made it.clear he wants.to stay in college. He wasn’t to make an immediate impact when he turnaround pro. You can’t fore these players along, if he wants to finish school, more power to him. I.believe he’s going to discuss this further.with his parents and agent. But for now it.looks like.Kreider will not.show for at last another yr,.maybe 2. He’s currently a sophomore, so he.has 2 td left.

  58. That’s when you move them, AV. When they’re worth much more and not for a rental. Nobody is untouchable, but you have to have patience and vision with your assets. And the timing should be right.

  59. Ok I can agree with that. In many ways glen has done a good job this yr. Maybe he was afraid to slip up on such an UP yr.

  60. Only time will tell of AA will be the player we all hope he is, but it is.clear that stepan and our rookie defense r all winners. Our future is bright and were still intact.. good trade deadline for us.

  61. When I mean sell high, I.mean high, of sather believe he’s got more to order, keep him til u think that’s the best he can be and if the timing is right,.fill a hole, get some picks, do what you gotta.do.

  62. NYR_FAN is...not a fan of Blog Trolls who constantly change their name!!! on

I agree, Orr. That’s why I thought Conklin was a good fit! He’s a decent backup and I feel more confident with him than Cam Talbot, to help us win a few games if Hank can’t go…

After this season, I would like to see the Rangers try to trade for Sharp, Stastny, or even Bogosian. Those are smart guys to go after, considering each of their respective team’s situations and how they currently fit in…I think each of those guys have a good chance of being dealt in the off-season.

I would rather Sather stay out of the free agent pool this summer, including signing Richards to a long term albatross contract. The pool of free agents, aside from Richards, is weak anyway…

Like I said earlier, I was proud of Sather for not pulling the trigger on Richards. The asking price was way too high for a rental…Torts has a good thing going here and I’m sure he has Sather’s ear on personnel decisions…

We are building a young core of very good NHL talent. We should NOT be adding big names via free agency. We should be picky and patient with all acquisitions, including trades. We should trade for missing parts when the opportunity is presented…and there is no rush to do it at a trade deadline…I am thinking long term…

  63. Time to go out to have dinner. Was going to ask if someone knew any good places in Telluride, but apparently mrs has everything planned out already, lol. I guess she was busy looking at Zagat’s while I was blogging. Before I leave, let me say that Carp did an outstanding job with his coverage today. I also credit him with our team not giving up any young players :-).
    And you, boneheads, are monsters!

  64. IF IF IF Hank gets injured, he gets injured and the Rangers/Sather will suffer the consequences of not picking up the tab on some bum goalie who could possibly ride pine for 6 weeks and they end up taking a cap hit for no reason. Heres the IF that matters. IF the Rangers can’t beat the Sens with Ocho Cinco, me, Carp or the other Ocho Cinco in net they have no reason to be in the playoffs anyway…Youse are still missing my point…Ok you wanna sign AA, fine. Let Boyle walk? Next year is Richards 1, A.A. 2, Stepan 3, E.C. 4 down the middle? As I said I like Artie but if you think there are enough Dolan Dollars to ink Richards, Cally, Dubi, Sauer, and Artie that leaves Boyle, Gilroy, Feds, and McCabe out in the cold.

  68. LMAO today, – what a virtual reality we all live in! It is so much for pseudo intellectual and unnerving discussions on virtual blog, between virtual personalities about virtual (never happened) “trades”, with virtual trials, judgments and accusations, and REAL insults to each other. Deep…
BTW, Richards will never try on Rangers jersey and AA, if coached right, will mature, add 15-20lb. of muscles and nastiness and become a 1st or 2nd line center, bottled in Rangersland.

  69. With Biron IMO, situation is more than serious. Call me paranoid, but I’m worried that a bunch of players in some teams will try in early stage of game run over Hank, knowing the situation, in deliberate attempt to take him out, paying a relatively small price (minor penalty for goalie interference) for potential big prize – winning decisive game. In any case, either Hank is injured (God forbid), or just overused (not being mentally too tough, IMO), it is real problem. With this entire ridiculous injures this year, which seems like a curse, team has non-stop heroically to overcome. But for how long and by what price? All this in the most intense period of this season. Yeah, if not for the bad luck, we wouldn’t have any…

  71. For the hattrick – after today’s inactivity, I have a feeling there are not big expectations for this season in organization.

  72. Stranger Nation on

Most teams would be very weakened if their starting goalie was injured. Ours just happens to be our best position player. He is the only top 5 player we have at any position with gabby being a top ten when not experiencing migrains or mentrual cramps or whatever is bothering him now. Staal is top 15 D-man and Cally is on the cusp of Top 20. After that we have lots of potential and future wishes.

Shows how watered down this league is now, especially the East. If EC is on this team next year we do not take the next step.

Big friggun week in front of us. Need to win the next two and start chasing the Habs.

  73. Stranger Nation on

AA needs to work with boyle’s skating coach. He has slowed down as season has progrssed. Like his play around the cage and ability to handle the puck in close. He needs to build up leg strength as well as upper body. Rarely see him lead rush through neutral zone, building speed across red line.

McGuire is a Dbag. The Rangers are “Losers on the Day” for not acquiring Richards. And if we would have put together a Penner or Kaberle type package to get him we still would have been losers since it would be called “Sather is at his old mortgaging the future” tricks again

    I repeat, what a Dbag

  84. NYR_FAN is...not a fan of blog trolls who constantly change their name(s)!!! on

He’s right that Biron was a huge loss today. But, how is NYR not trading for Richards considered “losing”. What a dope!

  86. I’m liking the lack of moves for once Slats! We still have almost all our picks, Kreider, McIlrath although losing Biron makes it risky if Lundqvist picks up an injury (or a migraine!). for me that makes us winners.

We now get a further 18 games plus hopefully a couple of playoff rounds to assess how our youngsters have developed and if we cant hang our hat on them, then Darth can dish some Dolan $$ for Brad on 1st July.
Now is the time for AA, Step, McD, DelZ, Sauer, Zuke to show they are keepers and for Dubi & Cally to lead the team and earn themselves long-term deals. Also a chance to look at McCabe and see if he’s worth a 1 or 2 year deal (as long as the price is right).

There’s still going to be some big off-season questions: Is it time to let Vinny retire to his sunbed? Has Gilly done enough to earn a new contract? How much are Cally and Dubi actuallly worth (or Boyle, Sauer or AA for that matter)? Should we buyout Drury and save $3.3m of cap space this year (and use up $1.67m of cap space the following year too)?
