Rangers go back to work

91

… and so do I. If all goes well I’ll be at practice this morning and have a report later on. Maybe an update on Wolski’s ribcage, and an idea on what will happen with the third D-pair (barring a trade) since Eminger didn’t play in the third period Sunday.

In the meantime, you probably know that Chris Kreider was named the MVP of the Beanpot Tournament when he scored two goals and the game-winning assist in Boston College’s 7-6 win over Northeastern last night. I still think there’s a good chance he’s here for at least a look before this season is over, and that he’ll be in camp and have a really legit shot to make the team next September.

Here’s the news on the Beanpot.

Just wanted to make this point, which got lost in all the silliness on Long Island over the weekend. This kid Grabner is proof positive about how inexact the science of scouting really is. I mean, how many organizations/scouting departments had shots at this kid, who is one of the best skaters in the whole league and now has 24 goals?

Back later.

Morning greetings ‘Heads, from balmy alabama, where it will be in the 60’s today!

  2. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

I happen to see the over-matched under-manned Austriian team at the Hockey World Championships in 2009. They had Vanek and Grabner and really nothing else. But those two guys were great. (I think they had Thomas Pock on D, but he wasn’t really that good)

  3. Billy, it’s the paid OT that motivates me!! We don’t get it very often, so when it’s there I grab as much of it as I can. It’s tough getting up that early though!

  4. What does Tavares have to do with what took place on Friday? If he had mentioned Comeau or DiPi that’s fine but then that basically contradicts what Snow said about things being not pre-meditated.

The Isles just need to shut up about trying to defend the indefensible and go back to figuring out how to be good enough to finish as a lottery pick, maybe go Tonya Harding on their current goalie.

  5. What I can’t understand about Grabner is how the Panthers let him go. The Canucks could do fine without him, but for a team that struggles to score against teams other than the Rangers, letting a kid with raw tools like that wasnt the best idea. Then again they also traded one of their best young forwards and a decently regarded goalie prospects for what may be a bust of a winger. Maybe the Hawks were on to something when they canned Tallon.

    {{{James}}} you to my friend!!

one day closer to a game! who made this years schedule?

  7. Carp: Maybe 1/2 of the NHL teams had a shot at Grabner. He was drafted 14th overall by the Canucks and never really cut it there. At last year’s amateur draft, he was traded to the Panthers. The Panthers, however, put him on waivers and the always desperate Islanders picked him up.

What Grabner’s gone on to do no one predicted. Furthermore, let’s see what he’s doing this time next year.

All that said, I think anyone with even an ounce of hockey knowledge agrees that the draft is a crapshoot. However, statistics prove that the higher you select the better the quality and the more selections you have, the greater your chances are of finding players.

  8. And I agree with CTB – how could the offensively challenged Panthers waive this kid. I do think the answer is because he didn’t show in Florida what he’s doing now (and he didn’t show it in Vancouver, either).

His speed has always been obvious – he was drafted due to that speed and alledged goal scoring ability, but until now, the latter hadn’t surfaced.

Can he keep it up? That’s the million dollar question!

  9. I wouldn’t be surprised if they shut him down for this year. Without Malkin they will not go too far in the playoffs anyway, why take chances. It looks like they will limp into the playoffs regardless, they have enough cushion above .500. Mario will make a few bucks by playing one round and call it a year.

  10. Unless that was sarcasm, no way Pens shut down Crosby for year, or are content with one playoff round. If the Rangers don’t make it far, Im hoping Crosby bags himself another Cup. He really isn’t as bad as everyone makes him out to be. And Pens fans aren’t all that bad either. They all wished the Rangers luck the rest of the way after I told them to beat the Bruins in the playoffs :)

  11. Will Mario be involved with the league by the time the playoffs begin? Maybe after further consideration he’ll decide to leave before then.

  12. Why would that be sarcasm? The very fact that Crosby isn’t getting back into game playing condition because of delays in his recovery indicate that this could be a very serious problem. Without their 2nd best player, the Pens are unlikely to advance past the latter stages of the playoffs. They already foolishly put his long term health at risk, no reason to do it again. This isn’t about an inspirational return from their best player, this is about making sure their franchise player has a career after this year.

  13. billybleedsblue on

It really is too bad the Isles play them only once more. I’m so proud of that team, I’ve never thought that, never mind say it or type it… but it doesn’t feel weird at all. I like that they stood up for themselves and made a statement.

Maybe Mario will start his own league, where he gets to make all the rules and oversee everything to his liking, and his liking only. Until then, STBU Mary-O!

  14. Kreider has a ton of speed, but his other parts of his game need a little bit of work. Watching him most of this season though, I’m glad to see he’s starting to add those skills. His speed is deadly though, probably the fastest guy we’ve had in awhile.

  15. Wasn’t a sarcasm at all, Tiki. They are not winning the SC without Malkin. And why take chances with your franchise player who may be better off sitting out and recovering fully from his concussion? It may serve them better long term.

  16. billybleedsblue on

  17. Zach the Hitman on

NHL 09 for Xbox 360 knew it all along about Grabner… a few years ago it had him highly ranked and winning the Calder Trophy in my game before I ever knew who he was!

  18. May serve them better long-term, but there’s no guarantee or even a likelihood that the Pens cant win a Cup without Malkin. Their team, without Malkin, is still a top-8 team in the NHL. They have solid goaltending and solid defensive core and a piece of Cooke. At the very least, Crosby is keeping himself conditioned, just not in game-condition. All he needs is 2-3 weeks of games to get back into game shape. He’s an elite player and has the ability to carry any team to a Cup. Right now, the Pens are being extra cautious with him, and Id be very very very very surprised if he doesn’t come back by the middle of March.

  19. You may well be right, Tiki. But they are not getting past Philly without Malkin. I’ll go further and say- they are not getting past Philly with Malikn either…

  20. Grabner used to be one of my favorite trade targets in NHL 09 and 10. I think one year I got him to 40 goals and 90 points. I might have been able to send them Higgins for him in NHL 10.

  21. Tiki, I don’t think they can win with just Crosby. He hasn’t carried a team to a Cup all by himself. It takes a team-wide effort to do so. He wasn’t even the MVP when they won in 09.

  22. ilb – You know I absolutely adore you…but how can you make such bold guarantees?

For a person to say the Devils are not making the 2011 playoffs is not a reach. But to say the Pens are not beating the Flyers in the 2011 playoffs with or without Malkin is, well, not a great guarantee to make.

First, the Pens may not have to face the Flyers. The Flyers could fall behind 3-0 in a series to a non-Pens opponent and actually lose this time. The Flyers goaltending is suspect. The Pens have the better goal tending of the 2 teams and I expect them to contend without Malkin.

  23. You may be right CTB. But as I said, I think they have solid team to win with a team-wide effort. Very good goalie, solid defense, Crosby, Staal and a piece of Cooke. They may just have to adjust their style of play if they are going to advance in the playoffs. i.e. Play a more defensive game, and depend largely on the power play with Crosby to score them goals.

  24. ‘Buffalo (WKBW.com) Multiple sources tell Eyewitness Sports that former Pittsburgh Penguins executive Ted Black is expected to join the Sabres front office under new owner Terry Pegula.’

After everything the Penguins have been given (undeserved draft picks, Crosby and Malkin treated like fragile babies while getting away with murder, all those calls going their way, the diving, etc.) you’d think Mario would sit back and take his medicine.

This is a very spoiled franchise and their fans (est. 2007) are a disgrace I’d leave too.

  25. Flyers aggregate goalie stats 09-10:

    82 GP, 41 W/35 L/6 OT, 217 GA, 2342 Shots Against, 2125 SV, .907%, 2.64 GAA, 5 Shut Outs

    Flyers aggregate goalie stats 10-11:

    55 GP, 36 W/14 L/5 OT, 132 GA, 1633 SA, 1501 SV, .919%, 2.39 GAA, 0 SO

I’d say the goaltending of a team that won the East last year is even better this year.

    Morning ILB and all!

I think the thing with grabner is what I have been saying all along, some players just fit better with some organizations than they do with others. Just because a guy may play alot with one team does not mean he will play alot with another or vice versa. Also, sometimes a “cast off” from one team may excel if picked up for another team. It’s all about opportunities and systems.

  27. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    Best of luck to AV.

Anyone else notice that since the devils traded langenbruenner to the stars the devils have went on a huge wining streak and the stars have fallen on their faces….just saying!

  28. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

The thing that concerns me with the toronto trades is if burke continues to trade away players and salary, he is going to have A LOT of cap space this summer. If slatipuss wants richards, he better trade for him because burke will be able to offer him the moon!

  29. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

everyone asleep? Some sort of hat trick I think!

    new post?

    refresh, refresh, refresh?

    game over, season over?

    carcillo…..hartnell…..prucha’d…….naslund…….laureled…..WTB……..assens……..!?

  31. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    NYR
oh, thanks man….I was getting worried!

  32. There are going to be a number of teams that have immediate cap space to sign Richards. St. Louis and Buffalo in particular. This year has shown that the Blues desperately need more offense if they want to compete in the West. A duo of Richards and Vanek in Buffalo would potentially be very deadly.

  33. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

I wonder if john michael liles gets dealt somewhere?

I would rather have carkner than phillips from the sens!

  34. Buffalo?!? Outside of belligerant cabbies, what the byfuglien would make Richards sign there?!?

    Buffalo?!?

  35. Why would Liles get moved? The Avs have plenty of cap space and out of their D that will be on that team next year he’s the oldest at 30. Avs are short on experience at a lot of positions.

  36. If Buffalo offers the most money then I’m sure Richards will give it some thought. They’re typically losing guys that become FA, but perhaps the new owner wants to make a splash. Let Derek Roy slot down to a number 2 center, they’ve got some decent young forwards to surround Richards. As a player I’d rather play in Buffalo than the circus that is Toronto at this point.

  37. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    ct
just wondering if anyone thought he might.

    james
    why do you want to?

  38. ctb – of course the Leaves are trying to gift Boston another lottery pick. Why wouldn’t they? That’s the name of the game in professional sports.

Your stats do indeed prove that Philly has better goaltending this year than last year, but what it does not prove is that their goaltending is better than Pittsburgh’s. Philly’s goaltending is unproven, while Fleury is proven.

p.s. W77 serves something called a Boston Lettuce blah blah blah, and I was going to ask Avery why he’s serving Boston anything in a New York/Rangers bar. But I wisely chose not to :)

  39. Wicky, I don’t think he gets moved. As much as it looks like Shattenkirk could be their primary puck mover, he’s only a rookie and who knows he could become Del Zotto next year, keeping Liles is a smart move to hedge that bet. They do need better overall D and Craig Anderson has become exposed for being Craig Anderson. Pretty much a career backup until last year where he played more than twice as many games as he’d ever played before in a single season.

  40. Tiki,

I was addressing your opinion on Philly’s goaltending.

Philly also has a much deeper offense. The 2nd leading Pens player in points after Crosby on the Pens is Letang, who ranks 41st in the league. Meanwhile, the Flyers have 3 of the top 25 players in points in the league.

And I’d go rather avoid Pronger over any of the Pens D.

  41. CT,
If all things were equal, then I would agree with you. I don’t think Richards would go to Buffalo when He could chose between Toronto and his ultimate destination NYR. I also don’t believe the Sabres would offer him the most $$$ anyway.

  42. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

makes sense. I think the solution here is pretty obvious, i mean the flyers just got versteeg so they will probably move carcillo or shelley. They need goaltending and we need more grit so we should just trade hank straight up for one of those two (I mean if slatipuss is on the ball he might even get betts back with one of those guys as well, man he would be fleecing philly in that deal).

  43. It seems to me this year that the division winners in the East are the only real contenders from this conference. Also, if the Devils somehow make the playoffs, I’d REALLY like their chances just because they would be so unbelievably hot going in.

  44. Good morning all! Happy for Krieder, not so much that BC won the Pot. grrrrrrrrrr (reminder, I’m a BU girl)

  45. Doodie, I don’t know if even all the division leaders are all contenders for the Cup. Tampa can run and gun with anyone, but they give up as many goals as they score. If their PP goes cold and/or meets a tough PK then they’d be sitting ducks having to win at 5 on 5. Boston just got handled pretty easily by the Wings in back to back to games. I’d hate to see the Flyers win it, but they might be the only team that can go toe to toe with the Canucks or the Wings.

This year though there seems to be a stark difference between teams that can probably win it (the Flyers, Wings and Canucks) and the rest of the pack. Last year in the East it looked like the Pens, Caps or Devils could win the conference and out West there was Chicago, San Jose, Detroit, Vancouver as possible conference champs. This year, as far as the East is concerned it’s the Flyers conference to lose.

  46. Tiki, wtb!! Man, are you sealing my thunder!!!!!!!!!!

I’m the BU girl you nut!!!!

Good morning all! Off to interview for a freelance gig, yeah for money!

  47. HAHAHA Mama!!! Im a girl, just wanted to see what it was like to act like a BU girl! Felt pretty good actually! Did I sound like you?! I think I did a pretty decent job! Love you Mama bear and Sally bear and Fozzy Wozzy Bear!

  48. Flyers got stomped two weeks ago by Tampa, 4-0. Bruins have great goaltending and are a tough, physical team that is going to make a big splash at the deadline. I think they’re all in it, but no other team from the East is (again, assuming the Devils don’t make the playoffs).

  49. Hi CCCP! Love you buddy! ♥

ctb – Staal missed a lot of the season. If healthy, he’s good for top 25 in the league in points. I guess we’ll agree to disagree on Pronger, the guy is 68 years old and lost a lot of quickness.

  50. Tiki,

Jordan Staal is producing at right around his career average, which is about 0.30 pts per game lower than what it would take to get into the top 25 in most seasons.

Maybe this was his breakout year that didn’t get off the ground, or maybe he’s a decent all around player but not a top 25 or 30 player in the league.

  51. well I didn’t know ya’ll had cookies CCCP. I’ll stay and mingle :D

but we’re going to have to get away from the Pens love for a moment so I can ask this question- Does anyone have an idea of what the bigger move by Philly may turn out to be? Because I don’t think they’re done after acquiring Versteeg.

  52. Even assuming Crosby makes it back, the drop off between having Staal as the #2 center vs Malkin as the #2 center is pretty steep. This was the first year that Malkin hadn’t averaged at least a point per game.

  53. Doodie I saw your post to me yesterday about Internet Tough Guy Unforunetly my computer wouldnt let me go to the site, what are ya trying to say? Oh by the way hows your foot that you hurt just like Forsberg
