Happy Thursday, Boneheads

Hi. It’s Carp. Sort of.

I’m not really here. I’m writing this on Sunday to appear on Thursday, because I’m not supposed to post anything this week. So, as I write this, I don’t know how the Rangers did in Detroit.

Of course, as you read this, I know what the Rangers did in Detroit, and I know everything that’s transpired since then. But I can’t write about it because it’s Sunday, even though it’s Thursday.

Who’s on first?

Confused enough.

Talk amongst yourselves. I’ll be back soon.

About Author

  1. Welcome back (or looking forward to see you on Sunday) Carp.

As for what when on this week we traded everyone again. Including those that were traded last week.

  2. CT that’s funny! Good morning, ilb. I hope Carp is having a reasonably good week while Blog HQ’s lights are dimmed.

  3. “Wow, two former Ranger #1 picks traded on the same day!”

Shouldn’t this be enough for a firing? All I hear is how great the NYR scouts are. McIlrath instead of Fowler? Better not be another trade for a 6th rouder in a few years.

  4. Kaberle isn’t gonna save a PP if the NYR forwards don’t have the balls to get their noses dirty and bang in some rebounds.

Sure, trade Gilroy because I don’t think he will be back next year anyway, but not even KAberle is gonna fix that PP mess.

  5. Well, if you look at a couple if posts during the previous thread, we traded someone who we never traded before. But we were still able to trade them twice. The last proposed massive trade involving many players makes as much sense as the line up it’s created. Or as much sense as my dog makes when he wakes up in the morning.
From a statistical point of view: if one makes up so many ready to happen trades ( and claims it’s substantiated by his knowledge of the league sources, no less) over the last couple of years, it’s quite possible that at least one of them will happen. Well, as of now, none of those happened. Nada. Anyone with any knowledge of statistics can explain that?

  6. I just read the comments on yesterday’s column about Drury. ilb, I nominate you for the Bonehead Lady Byng Award. Anybody want to second it?

  7. Or in other words, ilb, throw enough Carcillo at the wall and some of it will stick.

I don’t have quite enough insider sources to have an idea whether Burke and Sather are talking about Kaberle. But there’s essentially nothing at all being demonstrated by some Twitter rumour-monger when he claims “Kaberle for two prospects” at some kind of hot, breaking news.

Anyone who knows the Rangers are missing a D-man who can play the PP and has any sort of brain to know the Leafs might ask for something like “two prospects” (without specifying anything else about these prosepcts) could just throw that out there and claim credit if anything remotely close comes to pass.

Given Burke isn’t exactly shy about discussing Kaberle’s status and the number of “proper” media on the case in Toronto, plus Burke’s repeated desire to get back NHL-ready players in most of his dealings, I’m not sure the whole thing necessarily passes the smell test anyway.

  8. I wasn’t talking about that twitter guy, though, LW3H.
Regardless, I hope whatever they do is small, without gutting out the core and the system. Took them years to create what they have now, please don’t screw it up.

‘mornin boneheads, and hello Carp of Christmas past from the future! Oh my. What will I complain about now to my buddies now that Drury is out? Hmmm, I’m sure I will come up with something. Oh wait, there are other things I complain about…like the powerplay, or lack thereof. I’d like to think that during this current downtime, that the Blueshirts are furiously working at an on-ice solution. I’ll be patient a little more, but the time on the season is running out. They better figure it out soon.

Also, can we please stop trading the team away? I can’t wait until the trade deadline is over so I won’t have to keep reading about all of the fantasy trades. Work with what we got for once. Geez.

  10. Carp: Just what did you do that is disallowing you from blogging on here this week? Have you met some sort of contract threshold that means your employer will have to shell out a bonus or something?

Are you in trouble at home cuz you’re spending too much time blogging?

    So secretive!!!!

  11. You talking about Incarcerated Bob LW?

ilb, trade rumor probability is a continuous function with a lower limit of negative infinity and an upper limit that reaches but never hits zero.

  12. billybleedsblue on

    CT — your number +1

or limit of 1 over x as x approaches 0…squared!

    …plus 1.

    *runs and hides

  13. BTW, Beauchemin fetched a 20+ goal scorer, a decent prospect and a mid-round pick. Beauchemin is 30 and making nearly $4,000,000 for the next 2 years. It’s reasonable, therefore, to expect 26 year old Girardi who is easily Beauchemin’s equal and over $1,000,000 cheaper to land something better.

    Just saying….

  14. Mash the Thrashers on

    Carp got carped?

On previous post someone through out Dustin Brown – if that is even remotely a possibilty we must pursue with gusto.

I like Penner for age, cap, size and hands. If we get him and Brown we finally have forwards who can skate and put the puck in the net.

    No Kaberle

    No Richards

No (add any 30+ player past his prime or soon to be that we will be overpaying)

I hope Dreary comes back for the SC run…

  15. You mean the same Dustin Brown that has 2 goals in 15 games since the start of the new year? Skating with a premier center like Kopitar?

  16. I say leave the team alone. We all agreed we’d be willing to suffer some growing pains so let’s stick with what we’ve got, please.

  17. I can see it’s going to be another day of NHL 2k11 or whatever the most popular game is these days..While you guys are at it put in my trade request of EC, Feds, Drury and a 12th rounder for Ovechkin, Lidstrom and Spezza. thanks!

  18. JamesG, I think we need to go for Patrick Kane. We need to maintain mouthguard chewing parity in any trade involving Drury.

  19. This team is better without Drury. Hate to say it. He’s turned into a 7.5million dollar Blair Betts.

Would rather EC play full time Center

  20. The Rangers have not lost a game since Drury went out (ignore the fact that they haven’t played a game either).

  21. CT, you’re ignorning the 2 games he sat out before the injury news?

I’m gonna split hairs and say he wasn’t officially injured at that point but sitting out with knee discomfort. The surgery makes it official :)

  22. CT- the only Kane we’re getting for Drury is the one spelt with a “c” . he’s going to need one for the next 6 weeks

  23. Mash the Thrashers on

CT – that is the guy – you know his game, Capt of his team, prime of his career, leads team in hits – if he was having a banner year (last 5 yr averaging 27 goals per year).

Sorry you don’t get top 6 forwards when they are having career highs. Look over the course of last threee seasons not just the last 6 weeks.

  24. “This team is better without Drury. Hate to say it. He’s turned into a 7.5million dollar Blair Betts.”

Agreed. . . though slightly insulting to a more productive Betts.

  25. Is Thursday a new Sunday?

    Can Monday be new Friday?

Sitting in court… about to fulfill my jury duty! There’s about 500 people here and the room is mad cold!!

  26. Mash,

Yeah and all those leadership intangibles and great stats you cite have the Kings outside the playoffs right now and only one trip to the playoffs in his entire tenure in LA.

Do I like the idea of Dustin Brown, of course I do. He’s a bigger and more skilled version of Callahan, but is he going to be a great difference maker in grand scheme of things? I don’t believe he is.

  27. CT

No but I got a shirt on that says “I know where bin laden is” and so car I got few dirty looks lol

So true! Now I actually combine REAL duty with pleasure! Buuuaahhaaa

  28. Mash the Thrashers on

CT – you are underestimating the impact Dreary’s leadership will have on him… He just needed a role model to demonstrate how a real Capt performs on the big stage.

Like the Cally comparison although Cally has a much better bad angle slapshot… Both are from upstate NY.

IMO we do not get Top 3 forwards in trades but possibly Top 6. Need to deal with teams that need to shake it up b/c they are not making playoffs or barely making playoffs.

  29. Mash,

Impact of Drury on Callahan? I think Cally plays a bit more physical but a very similar style to how Drury played earlier in his career. Cally has become an important part of the team’s leadership on his own accord.

I don’t think Drury has held Cally back in any way. And if you’re choosing between players that have stepped it up when it’s mattered most, Drury has more of those moments in his career than Dustin Brown has. I’m not a Drury fan in any way shape or form, but it’s hard to argue that he’s had some pretty moments in the playoffs even if they were a number of years ago.

  30. It’s clear the Rangers want him to hang up his skates before next season (a la Naslund what a classy guy he could have sat on his butt and collected 4 million and where would we be now?).

Who sits out that long with a broken finger in the game of HOCKEY? If Drury was needed there would have been an uproar for him to return but there wasn’t because the team is better off. Imagine if Jagr sat out that long. I probably would have booed him along with all those ungrateful idiot Penguins fairweather fanboys.

Drury just bought a sick pizza franchise (Colony) that has some of the best recipes in the world. Time to retire.

  31. CTB… and how old is Dustin Brown? Drury played on some pretty amazing playoff teams. Avalanche and Buffalo gave him opportunities to excel.

  32. Mash the Thrashers on

Drury impact on Brown not Cally – either way I was kidding.

Yes Dreary had a career prior to the Rangers where he morphed into a slow 3rd line chekcing center getting paid 1st line center money. Once again we get a fading ‘star’, overpay them, and then get pissed when they cannot perform like they did earlier. He is a pro and can still chew a mouthpiece and glare sideways at a ref and block a shot and make pizza.

  33. Hi quick question CCCP – non hcokey related – you have your iphone with you at jury duty. Is this in NY by any chance? I have to go next week and they state no electronic devices on the summons…

    Is it Friday yet? LGR

  34. Mash the Thrashers on

Bown in 27, #3 in hits in NHL with 197. Not sure how they award that stat. One coudl argue jamming in the corners requires a lot more physical play than a hit. My guess is hit leaders are physical along the boards as well but I see Ovechkin has 169 hits and he rarely jams.

    NYR leaders (hits)
    161 – Boyle
    140 – CAlly
    117 – Prust
    114 – Girardi
    112 – Stall

  35. Dustin Brown might have his big moments of course, but if a player wants to talk to someone that has already done it, then Drury if nothing else (again, I find very little redeeming qualities about him at this point in his career) has a track record. I’ve certainly acknowledged that Drury was able to excel on the Avs because he had a host of better players surrounding him. But he was a cornerstone with the Sabres in his time there and had some big moments then too.

I believe Brown is a tremendous asset to a team, particularly to the Kings since he’s been there for his entire career. He brings a lot to the table, but to me the Kings are one of the biggest disappointments of this year. There’s no excuse why a team of him, Kopitar, Doughty, Johnson and Quick should be languishing on the playoff bubble.

  36. There’s no standard measure to be considered a hit. It’s all up to the home team’s stat keeper. Even last year the Rangers had a high number of hits. That being said Cally would be higher if hadn’t missed all that time with his hand.

  37. Noah-tenko-rury, 28 on

I practice in New Jersey mostly, but I know that when jurors are waiting to be called, they can do whatever they want in the jury assembly room (play on their phones, read the paper, watch the 9″ TV the court offers for them, etc.).

Once you’re in the courtroom though, I’d turn that puppy off at the risk of getting reamed out by a judge. That is, unless, the Rangers make a big trade. Then you have no choice obviously.

  38. Ava

Well, I don’t know what they say but got my phone with me sitting in big cold waiting room

    that autocorrect site is hilarious!

  39. Mash the Thrashers on

Kings have only $38M committed next year – hmmm…Need a sniper to play with Kopitar…preferably one with some Eastern European flow to their game

Currently 3rd best GA in NHL, 1st in Western Conference so D is not a problem. Need to resign RFAs Dmen Johnson and Doughty

  40. I think the eventual deal for Kaberle will be Gilroy, Grachev, and Carolina’s 2nd rounder, based on what they got for Beauchemin.

  41. On capgeek I see the Kings as having $40M for next year to 15 players. Figure they have $20M or so to play with for their NHL roster which should include at least 5 more, but probably 7 more players (I’m going with that amount and not the 10% cushion because that only exists for the summer).

At least $5M is going to Doughty in an extension. Adding Gaborik would put them at another $7M, leaving about $8M for 5 players? Gaborik essentially replaces 1 of 5 or 6 forwards the Kings need to replace. You can fill in some of those spots with prospects/promoted players (but would some of their top prospects have to go to the Rangers in a trade), but they have to re-up Simmonds (probably another $1.5M to $2.0M) and they have to retain or replace a few top 9 players who probably cost at least another $2M-$3M a piece. Bottom line is that they are really squeezing themselves against the cap if they add Gaborik.

  42. Mash the Thrashers on

if we take Brown and another salarly (~$1M) net add for Kings is less than $3M on cap hit

  43. But would the Kings trade Brown? From a pure production standpoint, Gaborik outproduces Brown over 82 games (the caveat being whether Gaborik can play 82 or 75+) games. But isn’t the idea to add to their existing core and not try to improve their team by robbing Peter to pay Paul?

  44. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    MOrning ILB and all!!

    and hello Carp (on sunday)!

  45. GOALS for GAB-orik on

haha, Mike Lupica taking a shot at Sather in the Daily News talking about the Knicks and Donnie Walsh…

“Last year, neither the Knicks nor the Rangers made the playoffs, and the place was dark in the spring. Now one is a No. 6 team and the other is No. 7 and ticket-holders are supposed to feel as if the glory days have returned.

Somehow Glen Sather stays and stays, at a time when there is at least a chance that Donnie Walsh may be going.”
