Sean Avery: Advocate for gay hockey players?

143

There’s this story on Advocate.com where the Rangers’ Sean Avery is quoted as saying, in the Toronto Sun:

“If there’s a kid in Canada or wherever, who is playing and really loves the game and wants to keep playing but he’s worried about coming out, I’d tell him to pick up the phone and call [NHLPA executive director] Donald Fehr and tell him to book me a [plane] ticket,” he told the Toronto Sun. “I’ll stand beside him in the dressing room while he tells his teammates he is gay. Maybe if Sean Avery is there, they would have less of a problem with it.”

Also, in case you missed it (or missed us missing it) Chris Drury will not play tomorrow, or probably Monday in Detroit, because of a knee injury that’s been bothering him. And Erik Christensen is, according to reports out of practice, going to make his return in Montreal, probably a bit earlier than expected. Martin Biron is the probable starter in goal.

    Hey NYR!!!

it takes so long to catch up with the blog since I can’t get online with my iTouch at work anymore!! GRRRR to them.

  2. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

TONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AZ was looking good until I heard it was 8 degrees there last night! WTB!?!?!?!

  3. re: Avery Heroism.

I hate to be a cynic, but isn’t this “hero” the same sexist that got suspended for said behavior? And seeing how he is eying a post-hockey career in fashion, doesn’t it seem a little self-serving to make a comment like that?

ehhhhhhhh … I am not buying in to this.

  4. cw, well, I am…

C3, holy hartnell the Manul!!!! love it as a baby but boy they get big! What do they feed cats in Russia!!!!???

  5. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

Tony, I started worrying there!! even 37 as a high is too cool for my liking lol!!! We’ll be laughing in the summer when I’m complaining about how the heat is killing me lol

  6. Not buying into what? The idea that Avery doesn’t care if there are gay guys in the NHL? People say sexist things all the time, it doesn’t mean they ARE sexist…it was just a dumb comment that was blown out of proportion. Why would you assume Avery has a problem with anyone’s sexual orientation?

  7. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

yes Tony! You can tell me that when it’s 120!!!

    earthquake? What did i miss???

awesome that CW is doing another guest blog/game review!!

  8. Hey guys – Does anybody know what deal is with ORR? He’s like the king of comments on this blog and we’ve had a few games now without him posting anything. Miss that guy’s sense of humor.

  9. Jon V.,
Just seems a little too convenient for a Vogue wannabe. Just sayin. Now if you wanna talk about Avery the PLAYER I am a unapologetic fervent fan of his game. I LOVE the guy as a player. I was a guy who was calling for him to be Captain earlier in the season!!!

I believe he deserved a second chance. He didn’t deserve to be suspended for his sexist remarks. Just save the “hero” comments for a reason that is truly deserving. I would say Avery is more a “hero” for his charity work than his timely social commentary.

  10. cw, you confuse me so sometimes :)

I’ll say this, given the situation in most sports for most gay players, I think it’s at least hugely admirable for someone to stand up and say, hey, no prob and I’ve got your back.

  11. HSV- Human Simplex Virus. Who is working to do what? I’m so confused :-)

ORR pulled the same carcillo with us last year, he went to Pennsylvania for a couple of weeks, IIRC, and forgot to tell us. People were worried…

  12. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

holy crap ilbzo, you’re right! we were about to send the National Guard of Megan Fox out looking for him

  13. Mama, your Sean is just awesome! Next thing ya know, we’ll be reading about how your Boyle is bringing Boston athletes and New York athletes together!

  14. ilb, great memory on ORR.

and yes, my artwork is being shown in the human simple vaccuum…

  15. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

i know i’m a bit late to the party but LMFAO @ sophia petrillo dipietro hips also having a glass jaw! wow, what a freakin tool

  16. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

Laurel, i think your next painting should capture the essence of the paper goalie of the islanders!

  17. I’d trade Gaborik for Dustin Brown
also, avery is a hero to speak out against homophobia in pro sports

  18. “I’ll say this, given the situation in most sports for most gay players, I think it’s at least hugely admirable for someone to stand up and say, hey, no prob and I’ve got your back.”

One thing I really admire about Avery, and one thing I do believe about his comments, is that he doesn’t give a f*** what other NHL people think of him. I think it is a double edged sword that allows him to play his style of game on the ice, but really hurts his status in the game. His persona is the reason why he toils on the 4th line. We all know that.

I am not saying that what he said is wrong. I think he is a very confident guy and probably has a lot of gay friends. And I don’t doubt for a minute that Avery would go toe-to-toe with any homophobe in the NHL. Even if it is Pronger.

I just don’t think “hero” status applies here.

  19. are the nhl’s “stars” and heroes” like crosby speaking out against this or ANYTHING for that matter? Nope. the NHL likes bland, vanilla stars and guys like avery, roenick and hull are vilified for speaking their minds.

  20. ComingoutHenrik? on

I think Sean was trying to convince Henrik that it’s ok to share what went on during halftime at the basketball game.

  21. Hi, Linda. You don’t know me. I started posting the end of January but I am a long-time RR reader. I really missed you and all of your hilarious posts. Welcome back. I hope you are here to stay!!!!!!!!!!! I hope all is well with you.

    LGR!!!!!!!!!

  22. You had to dis the King. Cheap shot.

Carp please start another post before the beer begins to take full effect on some. Maybe we can discuss dreary’s creaky knee, stone hands or slow feet.

  23. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

Hi Marji, thanks for the welcome back!

LMAO Habs..or his GLARE (or gaze) of DEATH!

  24. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

{{{{ CARPY }}}} i missed you most of all scarecrow!! lol

miked i asked you last night if you wanted to riot ;-)

Yes, that was me last night lol ( just in case Tony still doesnt believe it!)

  25. She is ok, Marji. She returned back after successful recovery from upper body injury :-). We had to put her on LTIR, naturally.

  26. In fact, that “riot” comment gave it away from. I still can’t believe you suckers didn’t know “guess who” was her until almost the end if the game.

  27. Dreary’s glare is somewhat less menacing these days. It used to be “I will go to the net with my stick on the ice taking whacks in the back and shovel home the loose puck”. Now it is ” I will meander around the high slot hoping a random puck finds my stick and I will fire it into the goalie’s belly”.

  28. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

lmao ilbzo!!! i thought miked would catch that…but you…you have a razor sharp mind my friend

  29. Do you believe it, ilb? Seems something hasn’t been right with him, even after his hand was supposedly healed…

    LOVE THAT LINK JB!!

did you guys watch tonight, or did you both dvr it?

aaaaaaaw C3, you’re making me blush!! I gotta say, you were the most persistent!

  31. >>“I’ll stand beside him in the dressing room while he tells his teammates he is gay.”

That’s fine and dandy, but I still would like someone to tell me why people need to “come out”.

  32. >>LOVE THAT LINK JB!!
    >>did you guys watch tonight, or did you both dvr it?

See, that’s another reason why I need you here; no one else appreciates those 80s music links.
[Kids today have such [c]rappy musical taste.]

I had a bit of work to do; I’ll be watching later from DVR.

  33. Maybe if Sean Avery is there, they would have less of a problem with it.

    ***

Going out on a limb here but, I don’t think Avery is very well respected for his opinions in Canada. He’s said that he would never play for a Canadian NHL team. Not to mention his sarcastic tone when before the Sloppy seconds comment when he said “It’s great to be back in Calgary, I love Canada”. Lmao. The NHL wouldn’t be the same without you, Sean.

  34. Evening gang.

Very convenient timing of Drury’s injury.

    Atta boy, Aves.

I wish I understood why I’m always so damn tired on Friday nights. I’m ready for bed now.

  35. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

    FIRE SATHER, Olga!!

JB, i love your links! and yea, there’s a lack of originality lately ;-)

Mickey, it’s like a game of tag… Drury with his twice broken finger tagged Cally who broke his hand. Fankist comes back from a knee problem, tags dreary and now he has a wonky knee. Maybe Frolov and Friggins and Boogie should tag him too!!

  36. Mama- really?

“I think it’s at least hugely admirable for someone to stand up and say, hey, no prob and I’ve got your backside.”

  37. MAO! I love you too, pal! Ive stopped taking tylenols and since the Jets got knocked out, the stress and pain in my jaw has subsided a lot. With that said, Id rather be in severe pain for the rest of my life and/or shorten my life with overuse of drugs as long as my NY teams won championships annually. :)

  38. ddeb, you know half the Sunday paper arrives tomorrow, right! bad misquoting of Aves and mama, bad!

“That’s fine and dandy, but I still would like someone to tell me why people need to “come out”.”

If you’re a white guy and all of your co-workers are white guys who constantly talk about being Italian and how great being Italian is and that Italian thing they did last night, you’d either have to go along with it or eventually just say “eh, I’m Irish” and be yourself. I imagine feeling like you’re not able to be your entire self is a pretty rough deal, especially when you know you’re probably holding back from people who would be just as upset that you didn’t tell them as others would be if you did. When being gay stops being a big deal to the majority of people in society (and all the gay marriage pushback proves it still is), coming out will stop being a big deal. I’m an unabashed Avery fan and I think its awesome he said what he said. If it helps one kid, great for him.

(And I never took what he said as sexist. If he thought taunting Phaneuf for going to the same restaurant he did a night later would get the same rise, he would have done it. Antagonism and actual sexism aren’t the same thing.)

(Also, I’ve very aware that was a pretty preposterous analogy, but there’s really no overt equivalent for most of us.)

  40. Lol @ Linda. FRIGGINS! And now I have a vision of the team playing 7-Up (someone tell me you know the game I’m talking about)

  41. It’s so sad, Mama, that I’m this tired. I even got a paid day off this week thanks to the snow, so it was really a 4 day work wek.

  42. I still have time for my question to be answered?

    Carp-
In the event of a shootout there is no GWG goal awarded. So if I choose ‘None’ will that be considered correct for that tiebreaker or will it default to “Rangers shots on goal”

    :)

  43. Mao Go Dim Sum Lyte on

Atta boy, Kon-TIki!!!! Adding years to your life and liver…so proud of you. The world needs a baker’s dozen more Tikis!! And not the Tiki that bobby brady found in hawaii…heck no!!! This is our Tiki: joyous, serendipitous and benevolent.

  44. >>…you’d either have to go along with it or eventually just say “eh, I’m Irish” and be yourself.

Or, you can just be yourself and see no need to say you’re Irish? Being yourself doesn’t mean having to tell everyone all about yourself at all times. Being yourself is about knowing, accepting and enjoying what you are about, whether the rest of the world knows or not.

  45. Mao_Bring Your Byfuglien A-game on

I don’t know what you guys consider italian, but it sure ain’t what you see on tv or on the streets of NY. Being Italian is much more about Giotto, Uccello and Rafaello…so if you ready to talk ‘italian’ you better bring your Byfuglien A-game when the Mao is around. I ain’t talking no cannolis here, sons, I’m talking cradle of the Renaissance and Carcillo.

“Or, you can just be yourself and see no need to say you’re Irish? Being yourself doesn’t mean having to tell everyone all about yourself at all times. Being yourself is about knowing, accepting and enjoying what you are about, whether the rest of the world knows or not.”

If it were as simple as you’re making it seem, we’d have dozens and dozens of known gay athletes because guys would be outing themselves in minor interviews with the press or typical locker room talk or at a restaurant or bars within a week of turning pro if not before. And again, that only happens when no one really cares either way.

  47. Canadiens 4, Rangers 2; GWG- Gionta, Rangers 24 shots, Canadiens 28 shots.

I hate to vote for a loss for our boys, but I do want those tickets and I have a bad feeling….

Totally cheaping my shots on goal and my canadiens over rangers idea man! Youre doing The Price Is Right with me over here!
