It’s Go Time!

I usually say there’s no such thing as a must-win game until April, or when it becomes mathematically so. But this is pretty close.

Minus Brandon Dubinsky now, and having lost three of four, and heading out on a three-game trip including a difficult stop at Carolina and a rematch with Washington (probably salivating after that 7-0 game here earlier) … well this one is one the Rangers can win, and it would really be a crucial two points to get to start five games in seven nights.

Probable lines:

Lundqvist is in goal.

PS, the contest is closed.

Here’s the official announcement on Kolarik:

New York, January 19, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Chad Kolarik has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Kolarik, 24, established a Connecticut franchise record with two shorthanded goals in a single period, and added two assists to tie the franchise mark for scoring in one period with four points during the opening frame of a 6-3 win vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday.  His four points in the contest established a career-high, and tied the Whale’s season-high.  Kolarik has registered 17 goals and 16 assists for 33 points, along with 38 penalty minutes and a plus-seven rating in 39 games with Springfield and Connecticut this season.  He is tied for 11th in the AHL in goals, and 18th with 125 shots on goal.  In 26 games with the Whale, he has recorded 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) with 20 penalty minutes and a plus-six rating.  He is tied for second on the team in goals, ranks second with a plus-six rating and fourth with 79 shots on goal since being acquired from Columbus in exchange for Dane Byers on November 11, 2010.  Kolarik has registered nine multi-point performances this season, and has tallied 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in his last 14 games.

The 5-11, 195-pounder has skated in 191 career AHL contests with the Connecticut Whale, Springfield Falcons, Syracuse Crunch, and San Antonio Rampage, registering 63 goals and 70 assists for 133 points, along with 140 penalty minutes.  He split the 2009-10 season between San Antonio and Syracuse, recording a career-high, 26 goals and tying his career-high in scoring with 50 points in 76 games.  He also appeared in two games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, making his NHL debut on April 5, 2010 at St. Louis.  In 2008-09, Kolarik established a career-high with 30 assists and 50 points in 76 games with San Antonio.  He made his professional debut with San Antonio on April 16 in the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs, and notched a hat trick in his next game two days later.

The Abington, Pennsylvania native was originally selected as Phoenix’s seventh round pick, 199th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

    I’ve been Carped! Repost:

Will Captain Clutch show up in Dubi’s absence??? Probably not, me thinks.

We essentially have no captain on the ice now, maybe Staal, or Prust?

  2. Olga Folkyerself on

The clutch has been slipping for a couple years now… He can’t get out of low gear anymore.

  3. Julie-Who hardly ever posts on

Wow, that stinks about Dubi. The injuries are sure happening all of a sudden. LGR!!!

  4. Who cursed them this year? Damn, it’s like the Mets from 2 year ago, except the Rangers have been winning (for the most part) instead of falling apart.

    This sucks so bad.

  5. CapeBretonRangerFan on

Last night I watched the Canadians fall one after another with devestating injuries and all I could think of was, “Glad it’s them.” I think it’s coming back to haunt me now. My favorite Ranger since Messier is out for a month. Oh well, at least I can drown out my sorrows in good ‘ol Canadian beer!

  6. This will be yet another game where Gaborik will fail to step up. I see it as an easy win for Toronto [3-1].

  7. Hugo Folkyerself on

Pierre Mcguire? He looks like a floor lamp with a big flesh colored light bulb on it…

  8. LGR!!! To hell with the pain!!!

If we go back a couple of months and read the posts, the question most asked was “Can they survive playing this style?” I think that question has been answered. :(

  9. well I guess I’m out of the contest. wow. My boy Dubi is out.

Cally and Dubi are darn near impossible to replace from within

  10. johnny lost his walker on

    “PS, the contest is closed.”

Not sure the whole tickets thing should be dubbed “The Contest”

  11. umm, Drury is their best penalty killer, Pierre? WTB are you smoking! Their best penalty killers are BOTH out of the lineup with injuries.

  12. Blue Seat Horror on

With both Newbury and Drury taking penalties do you think we’ll see the 4th line again tonight?

  13. WHEN will you learn that the Mao can see the future? Thats 1 goal down 14 more to go…BOOOOOOM!!!! the Gaborik!!!!

  14. Blue Seat Horror on

Drinking game: Every time Joe mentions Gaborik taking shots at practice take a drink.

  15. Boyle thanks Mr. Orr, who should have gotten two penalties: one for slashing, one for interference. 2-0.

  16. ZzZz NYR ZzZzank " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

GABORIKKKKK HATTRIC….well its comming soon to a Game neer you.

  17. ROFLMAOAOAOA @4everanger!! FIRE THE OLGA And THE WHOLE FOLKYERSELF FAMILY!!!!! ROFLMAOA!!! the Gaborik going for the “GABTRICK”!!!

  18. >>Anything less than 7 goals today is unexceptable.

Don’t be greedy! I’ll take a 3-0, 3-1, or 3-2 win. Save some goals for the other matches.

  19. Blue Seat Horror on

This is one of those games where the Rangers look like Stanley Cup champs because their competition is so bad.

Look for Newbury and Prust to get some sparring time.

  20. how do you like your Rangers now? lol

i predicted 4 goals by the rangers…now they need to give up 3 and im all set!

  21. Just keep going guys, don’t reduce rpms, and don’t forget,to Fire Olga before the end of period.

  22. Doodie Machetto on

Man, did I call this wrong.

PS, I think I am now officially immune to Joe’s Pardon Me. I don’t even hear it.

  23. Joe M is Mr. Fuggin Obvious…

“looks like its going to be a special night for Gaborik” …really? Isn’t it kind of special already? 2 goals 1 assist in the first..

  24. …The leafs must really stink…
Not as much, as you Hugo. Part ways with Olga or be fired too.

  25. Awesome first period. Keep it up, boys.

Gotta love how they have responded to adversity this year.

  26. now I’m no Joe M fan, but we could do so much worse; those of you with center ice will agree. i mean, we could have Butch Goring, or Craig Laughlin, or…Louie DeBrusk…

  27. And yes, I know the Leafs aren’t a great team and they are playing horrible tonight. But, the Rangers came to play after a bit of a slow start, and I have to think that chip on their shoulder got a little bigger when Dubi went down.

  28. ZzZz NYR ZzZzank " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

FIRE OLGA!! , CCCP Olga deserves everything it gets.. : )

  29. Hugo Folkyerself on

CCCP don’t worry about 4everfreud. He’s got brains. Trouble is his brains are in his head and his head is up his Assen.

  30. ZzZz NYR ZzZzank " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

Come on BOOGAARD , get healthy !!! we need a few more goals outta youse and a few more beatings!!!!!

  31. Our guys have to be very careful, Toronto in such situation is known to like initiate fights and brawl. They have nothing to lose already, – we do. NO MORE ANY INJURIES, please.
Fire Olga. And with blessing – to 2nd period to have a fun.

  32. ZzZz NYR ZzZzello " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

man down , man down!!!! FIRE HUGO!!!!

    wohooooooo Rangers are rockin!!!!

  33. ZzZz NYR ZzZzello " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

Tiki is all dressed in drag in a thong-gone-wrong at some gay bar …..hes watching the game .

  34. 4-0?????

That’s what I get for falling asleep until now. Harumph!

How’s the game going, aside from the score, Mama?

  35. Boyle/Prust/Feds on for the PP. Says a lot about the injuries and the trust Torts has in them.

  36. argh. had to watch the first period on mute and couldn’t get all yelly and happy….but now I can!!!

  37. Of course I really don’t want the Leafs to score, but I wouldn’t be totally averse to Ryan Bozak getting his name called by Sam Rosen after a goal.

  38. Julie-Who hardly ever posts on

I missed the whole first period. Was I surprised when I saw the score when I finally put the game back on. Keep it going guys!

  39. Loving Torts behind the bench tonight, especially his back pat to Aves….his tie, not so much….

  40. Aves/Gabby/AA arre flying out there tonight.

Then again, the Leaves defense is out to lunch.

  41. I like the word Saskatoon and other variations of it, like Saskatoonian!

In Greg’s case, he’s a bit wacky, or loonie, like me. So he’s either Saskaloonie or Saskatoonie! :)

  42. >>Official name change from Dale “Quick Release” Weise to Dale “Weak at the knees” Weise.

We probably witnessed a concussion in the making.

  43. I told you it will become phisical with their intend to hurt. We can’t afford it now.
So, FIRE OLGA, and be careful with rest.

  44. I was afraid to watch after the news about Dubi. I’m starting to agree with those that are saying playing with jam is taking its toll.

  45. Mickey – Ill make you dinner from now on, so you can get home and just rest, relax, and Rangers.

  46. Not that I’m missing Joe M., but can anyone tell me why the MSG feed is not an option on Center Ice as it has always been in the past?

  47. what was better than Gabby’s goal?
Avery’s pass when he knew that the leaf was going after him.

  48. ZzZz NYR ZzZzello " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

    Hatttyyy for Gattyyyy!!!!!

ooops sorry Tiki , didnt mean to offend ya!!! i was just joshhin!!! i think im a Saskatlooney!!!

  49. You didnt offend me, Greg! I know you love me, and I love you!!! You Saskaloonie! Im just leaving the gay bar now :)

  50. Rangers have as many goals this game as their games vs Vancouver, Montreal and Philly combined.

  51. Maybe Gaborik can score six against the Leafs so we don’t have to hear about his five against the Rangers? I still find it hard to forgive him for sticking it to us like that.

  52. Tiki, I would love that! A man to cook for me is a dream.

Mama, too expensive. Besides, I like my own cooking :)

Emminger and Newbury are the same people? MMkay, Pierre…

  53. FOUR!!

This is the Marian Gaborik we’ve been missing all season. Please stay awhile.

  54. gustavson should still feel okay when the game’s
because he hasn’t given up a goal to

  55. I’ve been saying this all year Avery needs the minutes, this team is so much more effective when Avery is a factor (which is hard to do from the pine). Not to mention he has good hands, always makes a good pass, skates very well and is always physical. I also don’t think he hurts us defensively oh and did I mention he has a way to get the garden crowd involved and on the road get the other teams off their game.

And my Captain Obvious observation of the night…………..Avery with Gabby produces results. Why on Earth does Torts find the need to only give Avery a game or two with Gabby?

  56. You better believe it, jpg. That’s why I’m not getting as excited as Micheletti and Rosen. Once again, these offensive outbursts are coming against teams that will not be in the playoffs.

  57. Blue Seat Horror on

Gaborik taking advantage of Dubi’s injury to catch up to him for team goal and point lead.

  58. matt k. January 19th, 2011 at 8:35 pm
Actually.. gabby thats enough.. hopefully captain dickface can score a goal now..

  59. Dear Torts,

You benched Avery.. He’s back to being a monster
You benched Gabby.. He scored 4 goals tonight

Chances are you should probably bench Drury.. one game might not be enough tho.. maybe like a week.. Anyway.. hopefully he’ll respond. Thanks.

    The Rest of Hockey.

  60. JBytes, I’ll take an offensive outburst (on the ice) over none any day….good for the ego and morale.

  61. MZA we know you haven’t been with the team that long, but never ever pass to Drury when a scoring chance presents itself. Pass to a guy that has more points in the last dozen games, like Lundqvist for instance.

  62. Blogmama January 19th, 2011 at 8:39 pm
JBytes, I’ll take an offensive outburst (on the ice) over none any day….good for the ego and morale.

Agreed, 1,000 percent. They (and we) needed this offensive outburst.

  63. Mickey -You deserve a guy that will cook for you, and you probably have men lined up all the way to Texas for you!! Pick one :)

  64. ZzZz NYR ZzZzello " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

4ever , that is correct . Thats what I ment to say . Yeah . AA can deliver nice passes and good plays. We all knew it , AA is our best center to help Gaborik deliver the goods.

  65. I predict Leaves will become big bag of carcillo…

Mickey, my mom made those two dishes all the time when I was a kid! Let’s talk!!!!

  66. Great game tonight, but for some reason – maybe the fact that ive gotten 10 hours total sleep in the last week – Im feeling uninspired. So no “We want the Cups” today.

I need to see this effort in periods 1,2, and 3 against good teams from the Rangers and Gabby.

  67. You have GOT to be kidding me……awesome game tonight and you two kids are still throwing sand at each other……good grief. 5 minutes for each of you.

  68. cw, LMAO…..I never would have predicted anyone would win with 7!!!

I still want the Cup tiki!

  69. Oh prediction was 1-0 Rangers and now its 6-0 Rangers…
That shows what a great hockey hockey analyst I am !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  70. this is the type of game i was hoping for
    vs. montreal or philly.
both nights, i felt like crap (sick, ugh!)
and didn’t have work to do during the game.

    i’m smiling right now!!

let’s keep it going in the third!

  71. ZzZz NYR ZzZzello " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

    Fire OLGA!!!

Go Rangers , kill these guys !!!!! lets moider the bums!!!! Lets ” Rake” up the goals while we rake up the leaves!!!! GO RANGERSSSS!!!! heart baby , no dubi…but stilll lots of kisses!!!!

Its all about Gaborik , and the 2 pts couldnt hurt either.

  72. Folkyerselfs,
behaive yerselfes, you are FIRED, should I call for security? Or you will do it yerself?
FIRE THE REST OF THIS KLAN! Very healthy for Rangers.

  73. Oy, sorry Mickey….OK, I promise……but I’m very much wanting chili and chocolate right now :)

  74. Blue Seat Horror on

    Ramsey said “Nope”

And Tortorella throw about 5 byfuglien’s out.

Fedetenko must be done for a while.

  75. Wouldn’t you, guys preffer that Gabby would spread his 4 on 3 lost games before. I do. We could’ve be on 5th position.

  76. ZzZz NYR ZzZzello " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

Tough to watch if yer a fan of the game!!???? Come on Pirre Mgwire you idiot!!! Rangers are winning big…whats the crime????

  77. You can coach good conditioning but you can’t do anything about all the broken bones we have had (and may have with Feds)

  78. Chuck – Believe me, Id like to sleep more. I cant. I get sleep for about an hour or 2 at a time!

By the way, I still have Playoff Rounds 1 and 2 of the 1994 NY Rangers for you on DVD, plus the 94 Rangers parade on DVD.

You can check with other regulars on the blog to see that Im legit…Mama is one.

  79. I missed it on the TV, but rewound to see Torts……I actually may cry for the guy.

    Chuck, tiki is legit.

  80. Blue Seat Horror on

If Torts doesn’t bench Drury he will screw up the shutout for Hank. He is awful tonight.

  81. Fedotenko is fine. Ramsey was just informing Torts that they’ve run out of the curtains from the strip club they use to make his ties.

  82. They are calling up a center from the Whale for Feds Chad (something) I missed the last name

  83. ZzZz NYR ZzZzello " Go RANGERS!!!"...says Greg L. on

suree suree Doodie ,If Gaborik wasnt here we would be up 2 – 0 and blow it and lose. Having no Dubinsky makes the game alot tougher . Kudos to Gaborik!!!!! Give some credit after he was benched the game before…

  84. I guess those long hockey pants never took off, eh? Didn’t the Clyers used to play with them as well?

  85. friend called me with news that a mutual friend’s dad
    then, we just caught up.
    miss anything?

  86. sorry about the news jpg……

granted, there haven’t many shots on him, but I feel bad that Hank will likely get 2nd star under Gabby……

  87. I think the ticket giver wants someone to have the tickets, so the final judge, carp, will use his judicious mind to find a winner……

  88. Doodie Machetto on

I think he said Sally gets them in the event of a tie. The tie appears to be everybody being wrong.

  89. Olga Folkyerself on

First game in awhile that I could sit back and enjoy.

Now if they would just FIRE SATHER!

  90. and here is your contest winner

    Scott January 18th, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Rangers 7 Leafs 1 GWG Prust Rangers 38 Leafs 17

he called it the closest… nobody called 7-0…

  91. Man I love these boys after a win…Prust knocking everyone’s gloves as they head to the tunel, Prust and Boyle, stick salture, Zucc with Gabby…….I want to cry !

  92. C3, who appointed you judge!!!!

and thanks to JohnG for almost ruining a perfect night by saying the forwards on the ice “need” to pass to Drury so he can get a goal cause he needs one. Oh please……

  93. Congaratulations everybody! What a wonderful night – Rangers won big time and Olga fired!
Only spoiler – Fed’s trauma. Damn. Any resiliance is still limited. Will pray.

  94. OK all, I gotta cut out early tonight….catch up with post-game etc. tomorrow. I still have the goal song in my head :) LGR!!!

  95. couple notes:

HURRAY For the Shutout win. Great Team Play, Glad Gaborik came out of his slump

JPG, don’t jinx the guys with that talk earlier.

Did anyone see Gabby and Sean strategizing on the bench? Cool, huh?

  96. (a wicky)…..if Eminger’s not OK and we lost 3 in one night, well, I don”t know what….just byfuglien.

  97. would have been nice to see that salute Mama
but i was stuck with nhl network broadcast.

doubt they would have cut away if it was cindy and the icehens.

  98. you tell em jpg’s sister! oy, before I hat trick on wicky’s, I’m fading to black……TA!!!

  99. actually, i should have said
cindy “headshots should be penalized since i ran into a guy” crosby

Keenan (referring to Toronto): “I thought that was the worst game I’ve seen an NHL team play this year.”

  101. Olga Folkyerself on

Does Drury have that No Movement Clause thru his whole contract? Is there NO relief from his clutchlessness?

  102. from Zipay tweet:

Feds out two to four weeks with sprained shoulder. Brodie Dupont will join club

  103. Blogmama- glad we agree on 16 staying put with gabby for a while!!!!!

I hope Aves heard the crowd chants about the ex………. Come on MSG network where is the cut away shot of Aves when the crowd is chanting

Good to see a NY team with grit and fight when they lose a few players. I hate to say this but it looks like Slats has done a good job putting together a farm team that can feed the big club with out Losing to much in the process……… Did i just compliment Slats? What’s the world coming to????

  104. N.CountryNYRFan on

I like that Torts used Emminger & McD more than Staal & Dan G. tonight, they have been playing some much lately, he could have probably given them the night off tonight though…hahaha

  105. Feds 2-4 weeks.

Srsly, who cursed this team? At this point, I would gladly take Prucha or even, (shudder) Hollwegg back just for a wam body that can skate.

  106. Another day of from snow? For a mere 6 inches? Goodness are ppl down here babies when it comes to winter weather.

  107. They must really be concerned that 4 time waiver wire Todd White is going to get claimed on re-entry waivers.

  108. Olga Folkyerself on

You remember anything Potvin did after the 94 playoffs?

He still sucks, according to MSG chants… :)

  109. fedotenko is one of the team’s most useful, if not the most valuable player. May be 2nd in line. And he is not a mercenary, but become a real Ranger by spirit and attatude. Really tough lost on a top of what we already have. Hard to replace.

  110. Olga Folkyerself on

Mickey- send them up to the North Country. They would probably freak out and die of exposure. I live up there for a couple years just north of Plattsburgh. The best thing I can say about it is that I USED to live there.

  111. Nice to see you tonight, Marian. Where have you been since October? Please tie your skates like that more often. Thanks for reminding everyone of what kind of dynamic talent you have. Now, please go on a tear for the rest of the season. You can still easily finish with 30 goals and become our MVP. We need you to be yourself with all the injuries we have.

    Gaborik = Elite

  112. My goodness…430+ comments, I have a lot of catching up to do….

Olga, your metaphor about the clutch stuck in low gear is priceless. Job well done, sir. Still lmao!
