No game today

87

And I have a couple of appointments to which I have to run … or at least drive.

So I’m not sure if there will be anything of substance here today. Maybe later.

That was some dizzying night of dialogues and monologues in the comments section. Wow. Very impressive.

Hope to see youse all later.

Until then, I’ve been saving this little space-filler, and some of you may have seen it. It’s a quote from the polarizing former Rangers coach, Tom Renney, after a loss by his Edmonton Oilers:

“We had a good third and we were strong in the first 10 minutes, but the white part of the Oreo cookie wasn’t very good. It was awful.”

Sounds, actually, like the Rangers’ 2009-2010 season.

Too bad for Frolov… he wasn’t doing much, but hate to see an injury like that. Anytime the Rangers want to get rid of the injury bug… i’m all for it.

  3. Jovo in play.
I think the NYR need a veteran (steady) influence on the blueline. Has snarl. Lefty shot. Can play PP. This may be the opprotunity to adress that hole in the NYR team.

With Cally coming back, the surprising play of MZA, and a few capable Hartford fill-ins, I think the time is right.

Experienced blue chip defender? Do it Slats.

  4. Frolov wasn’t scoring much, but he was playing important minutes. And was very sound defensively. The injuries haven’t affected this team much, but I wonder how long we can keep up the same level of play.

  5. Can’t complain too much about the injury bug this season because the Rangers have been so lucky to avoid it in the past two or three years.

  6. Fro was definitely not living up to anyone’s expectations, but I agree with a lot of what has been said. He was a responsible player. More responsible than he had been known for and what I expected. He actually came to us this year and was the opposite of what I expected. I thought he would score 30 and be a defensive liability, when he actually has had his opportunities, not scored, but been defensively sound. I don’t think this is a real damaging loss, but we do need some people to step up and be ready to play in situations that Torts was using Fro for.

Here’s an excerpt from a tsn interview with crosby about his concussion. And him whining about being hit…

”It’s really tough to decide if he meant to or didn’t mean to (hit me),” Crosby said. ”I feel he could have gotten out of the way and avoided me. Whether he tried to hurt me, only he knows. We’ll never know that, but you still have to be responsible out there. I don’t see anything – he sees me there. He sees the whole ice and he doesn’t avoid me. I don’t think that’s responsible on his part. He’s got to be the one to try to avoid me in that situation.”

    What a baby.

  8. Just reading howlings.net. I swear I did not copy their thoughts when I speculated that Grachev would be called up. lol

Bruce Berlet says that Newbury played well with Dale Weise and are likely to be linemates again along with Drury.

I’ll say this, if I have to listen to people moan about Drury’s lack of production while he’s getting 8 minutes of ice time (2 min of that being PK) with 2 AHL call ups – I’ll surely go postal!!
    Help me… Please!!

  9. Gift of GAB-orik and Norweigans! on

He is such a chump. The NHL said it wasn’t an intentional hit. And the LOVE Cindy. So if the NHL says it’s fine, and i’ve seen the ‘hit’…. deal with it.

    Boohoooooo…. he shouldn’t hit me… WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH.

  10. Doodie Machetto on

I’m surprised they didn’t bring up MDZ and roll 7 defensemen.

I can’t imagine they intend to go with Newbury for very long. I expect a bandage trade or waiver pickup in the coming days. What’s the ETA for Prospal, Callahan, and Boogaard? Last I heard Prospal and Callahan were supposed to start skating today, but neither is really expected back this month.

  11. Sid, you got done to you what Malkin does to EVERY unsuspecting player he encounters. Your teammate Matt Cooke?!? Orpik? These guys cheap shot EVERYBODY!!! As you are watching guys get carried off on stretchers because of clowns like Cooke, you should be telling yourself to keep YOUR head up.

Now look at you. Quit crying already. Cally isn’t shedding any tears when you coulda concussed him.

    Is Sid reading this?

  12. I see no reason why Newbury wont be here for 2-3 weeks as the 4th line center. 4th liners are extremely replaceable and barely play anyway.

  13. Doodie Machetto on

“I see no reason why Newbury wont be here for 2-3 weeks as the 4th line center. 4th liners are extremely replaceable and barely play anyway.”

Because they need guys who they can rely on to play defense and occassionally score in the event of ANOTHER injury. Newbury cannot be asked to play more minutes. As it is, they barely play Weise, who is ahead of Newbury.

  14. That quote from Renney says it all doesn’t it? He just doesn’t get it. How does he get to be head coach of any team? (end of rant)

  15. Why would Newbury need to play more than 6-10 minutes? If there is another injury he still stays on the 4th line as Drury or Avery gets moved up.

you’re complaining about something so minor and unimportant right now. If you need to rely on your 4th line for anything more than energy and physicality your team is in big trouble…

  16. Renney would be a great assistant coach. The guy is a great teacher. His demeanor would be great for kids coming up and learning the game. He doesn’t beat guys down. The guy had a big part in the NYR revival. Give credit where credit is due.

  17. Frolov was an average player making $3 mil per. He can be replaced. He didn’t kill us. He didn’t light it up either. One of the most replaceable players on the team. Just put Drury in his spot, and call up ANY 4th line replacement and the NYR don’t miss a beat.

How I can type that, and still see the NYR well above .500 astounds me. But it’s true.

  18. ThisYearsModel on

I would consider Brunette or Jussi Jokinen. We don’t need anymore small guys. I don’t think we need any other d-men. We have MDZ in Hartford, we have Kundratek and V-Tank. Have to figure out if Brunette is really done or not.

  19. If Phoenix drops out of contention they will offer Jovanovski to us. They’re gonna want Sauer or Gilroy going back the other way, plus at least a 2nd rounder. (we have Carolina’s from the Sanguinetti trade, and need to keep ours for offer sheet purposes). He’d be a decent rental who played in the SC finals 15 years ago.

  20. Ryan 5 minute penalty HollyWegmeister!

Good Morning wickster, ilby and all!

I just had the most awesomely romantic night! I feel like a million bucks!

  21. CTBlueshirt

wanna hear something scary? Ryan Hollweg has more goals and the same number of points as Evgeny Grachev

  22. I wouldn’t give up Gilroy, or Sauer plus 2nd rounder for 34 yr old rental. I’m not sure Phoenix will even get a second rounder for him. Jovanovski will have to waive his NTC to be traded, so their choices will be limited. not to mention, they are not even close to be out of the playoffs.

  23. im on board with my man, orr…i dont want any older chia pets…lets run with what we have…we still going to get one of our top three offensive players in Callie…and that kid is like having three different players.. we have organizational depth too which afforded us thee luxury of sending down MDZ…id like to hear what others think of ryan mcdonagh in what little we saw of him…that kid got made wheels…there was one play where he came down low a bit to handle puckjust below the point…fumbled the pass a bit than skated backwards like he was propelled by jet fuel… my main problem that i stated here b4 is MDZ’s apparent lack of speed…he doesnt have explosiveness…mcdonagh has explosiveness in his stride…i wonder if he turns into the stud…can’t want to see more of him.

re: grachev …young kids are not going to all mature at same point, but the rangers have now clearly demonstrated their ability to develop homegrown talent…give the kids time…how many thought callie and dubi were going to be just mediocre? Grachev has natural gifts, so he has a built in boost, and the success of our team at the pro level is allowing kids the space to grow and mature…the nibble at the NHL level when they can…that is the right way…our organization deserves some mad props for revitalizing the system…great job by sather as much as no one wants to accept that. .

  24. Grachev is turning 21 in February. I think we should at least wait until that day before we call him a bust. :-)

  25. Doodie Machetto on

Guys, I don’t know what you think happens during an NHL game, but if you have a line of guys who can’t hack it defensively, they WILL get scored on. That’s why Avery-Gaborik lasted all of 2 or 3 shifts the other day. Having too many defensively poor players on one line is a liability. If they don’t get played, the other guys play more. If the other guys play more, they are more likely to break down and get injured. If they get injured, you are now playing those bad players in more minutes. It’s a slippery slope. I expect a move.

  26. I was at that one game against the Flyers like 3 years ago where Hollweg scored two goals (the Rangers lost like 6-2 but that’s beside the point). I was also at the game this year that Boogaard scored his goal and up until Saturday night I was at the Thrashers game where Avery scored his only goal this year. As a non-season ticketholder, what are the odds off all that?

  27. Doodie I was about to say the same thing:

Weise has been getting 5:13 a game. As the fourth line becomes even more inexperienced Torts comfort level in using them will probably decrease. Moreso with Avery on it than Drury because of defensive responsibility. Either way the fourth line plays less meaning…

  28. Doodie Machetto on

ddebened, Either way, you don’t really want to get too far down your depth chart when it isn’t that good. If Newbury doesn’t cut it or if there’s another injury, I could see them gambling on calling up Todd White, but I think for 1.3 million, he might be too enticing to another team, even if only to block the Rangers.

  29. Doodie Machetto

you are simply assuming that Newbury is a liability despite the fact that he will play no more than 6-8 minutes a night. He’s out there to hit, provide energy and drop the gloves which is pretty much what every 4th liner in the NHL is expected to do.

i dont know where you get this idea that 4th liners are usually key contributors to their team but you need to do some research

  30. Interesting stat picked up from Puck Daddy:

Erik Christensen(notes) and Mats Zuccarello(notes) are a combined 5 for 5 in the shootout this season, and the rest of the team is a combined 0 for 14. Awesome stuff.

  31. No, you don’t want to.

    Calling Mr Petr Prucha lol

One thing I know, it’s now time for Avery to step it up- consistently.

  32. Leetchhalloffame on

I won’t be sending Sindy any get well cards – what a wuss. Reminds me of that d-wad Bobby Clarke back in the day. Also, has anyone seen the roster of Coyotes AHL team lately? A Who’s Who of Ranger castoffs (Prucha, Montoya, Hollweg, Ortmeyer). And they say that Don Maloney is doing a good job?

  33. at some point even if 4th liners go out of the lineup it hurts the team.

they need cally back and then they will be fine…

dubi is on pkj, pp, and 1st line he goes down they are screwed big time…….

  34. He got the ‘Yotes into the playoffs with a lot less payroll in a much tougher division and conference.

And the fact that those guys are in the AHL rather than when they were on the Rangers NHL roster (except for Montoya) says to me he knows where those guys belong.

I’d say Maloney’s done a pretty good job, no qualifiers needed.

  35. Doodie Machetto on

oleo, learn to use your head a little bit. If you have 3 guys who are just not ready for the NHL playing on one line together for 6-8 minutes, that’s 6-8 minutes a night where you will be totally dominated. Hockey games are 60 minutes, not 52-54.

In 3 shifts of Avery with Gaborik, the rangers we almost scored on twice. Those are legitimate NHL players, who are just bad defensively. Now imagine you have two guys whom the coaching staff indirectly called not ready (think back a couple of weeks ago when Tortorella said that there weren’t really any guys in Hartford ready for a call up). It’s a liability. Brush it off all you like, but it’s a problem.

  36. you are assuming Newbury is no good defensively. Can we actually see how he plays first???

think about it? why would they give up something for a player that wont be in the lineup a month from now? When Callahan and Christensen come back they will replace Newbury and Weise.

  37. Doodie Machetto on

They did it with Brad Isbister. They claimed Jason Krog off of waivers. Sather is notoriously one to panic.

  38. Doodie Machetto on

And I say Newbury isn’t that good defensively because he’s an AHL lifer and Torts has previously said that none of the Hartford guys were NHL ready, then called up two guys ahead of Newbury. If he was worth a damn, he would’ve gotten the call already.

  39. Sooner or later the injuries will start reflecting on their stats. Again, Frolov wasn’t scoring, but he was very responsible defensively. And played more than 4th line minutes. Avery is a defensive liability, he is on Gaborik’s line because of no other choices. Drury is, supposedly the logical choice to step up and play some more defensive minutes.

This is what one needs to consider before making a move, Doodie. The Rangers have a pretty healthy cushion above .500. In fact, if they play .500 hockey from now on, they will get in. Now, who do you get? And for how much? Callahan is about 3-4 weeks from his return..

  40. CTB – Agreed on Maloney, and I would further add that he did it with all the ownership and financial issues looming overhead, which must have made dealing with budgets and long-term planning a nightmare.

I’m not saying I would make a move, just saying I think they would. Personally, I would have called up White or recalled MDZ and gone with 7 D, having Gilroy play D/4th line wing. At least then you know you have as many legit NHLers in your lineup as possible.

  43. Doodie Machetto on

wicky, I haven’t seen anything on that, but if they did, I bet the Rangers would put in a claim.

whatever happened to souray?? I mean he just absolutely dropped off the rumour radar! Not that I am promoting a move for him (disclaimer) just curious if he is hurt yet again or is sucking it up in the A?

  51. you need to actually see how he plays before you say he can’t play 5 minutes a game on the 4th line. I could definitely see them claiming someone off waivers but that’s completely different than acquiring someone through trade.

  52. oreos, chia pets, slew foot karma….too much to laugh at here today! Good afternoon all! Next time I stay up that late here, somebody please pull the plug (on my computer) …Yawn!!!

Jakub Petruzalek and a conditional 5th for Brad Isbister.

    Adam Hall for Pascal Dupuis.

    Maxim Kondratiev for Petr Sykora.

3rd round pick for Sandis Ozolinsh.

All I’m saying is that Sather’s track record militates in favor of a trade. I’m not saying it’s the right thing to do, just that it is something that could be done.

I tried, you kept slapping my hand!!

  55. Doodie Machetto on

And the coaching staff has already implied that he isn’t good enough for those 5 minutes by 1) saying no players were worth calling up, and 2) calling up 2 other guys ahead of him.

On Cally, Torts says today he’s “getting close” but don’t expect #NYRangers to jump gun. Three weeks probably more likely.

    ———–
After the Jan 25 game the Rangers don’t play until Feb1. So taking advantage of the gameless third week probably makes sense.

    So figure 9 more games.
