Post-game quotes

Ryan Callahan’s hand examination revealed some healing, and the plan is for him to skate at the team’s practice facility Sunday.

Now, these are the best quotes of the night:

Mats Zuccarello, asked about the difficulty of being so small:

“I’ve been like this for 23 years so I got a long time to practice being small. I don’t know anything else. I don’t know how it is to be big, so I have to use being small to my advantage.”

Brandon Dubinsky, who  was just on the other side of the net when Zuccarello fired an angled shot past goalie Cam Ward and up under the crossbar (and who retrieved the puck for Zuccarello):

“I thought it was going to hit me in the face and it went right into the top of the net, so it was a helluva shot. The kid’s talented. He uses a stick that’s longer than mine and that thing just whips and he can fire it. I don’t know if he’s going to score that (shot) 10 out of 10, but I like his chances better than mine from that angle. I’ll tell you that much.”

More Zuccarello:

“Dubi picked the puck up behind the net there and I knew I was going to get a chance out of it because he’s so good at it. Both of their D-men were in front of the net and didn’t (go) to me, so I just tried to shoot it top corner.

“What can you say. It’s nothing other than unbelievable. A great feeling. So I can be happy tonight and be proud of that, but tomorrow it’s practice and focus on next game. There’s a lot of games here so you can’t be flying on a wave now.”

On the pass on Gilroy’s goal:

“I just tried to find a little room there. Everybody just collapsed down. It was a great shot by Gilly. It was a great feeling to get that 1-0 goal.”

On the first goal being a relief:

“I felt that I played good, so I haven’t been that concerned about scoring goals. But I know that I need to create chances for my team. As long as we’re winning and I create chances, I’m happy. But we had a couple of tough games and we lost. … so it was a great feeling to score on one of those chances for a change.

On whether the pass was to Gilroy, or intended for Derek Stepan, on Gilroy’s goal:

“Just probably just, saw both of them and closed my eyes and hoped it would hit one of them.”

Henrik Lundqvist:

On playing in a 1-1 or 0-0 game:

“The pressure’s on, but I don’t mind it. Halfway through I knew it was going to be a tight game, a low scoring game, so it’s important to stay focused. I felt like the first goal was going to be very important. I thought we had the win there when we scored the first one. But they came back and scored a goal. The important thing there is we regrouped and we don’t panic.”

On mid-season:

“I feel really good about this team and the way we work. Everybody shows up every night to work really hard. We’ve been winning a lot of tight games because of that, I think. When you work hard, you’ll get bounces and you can’t win every night, but when you work really hard, you will definitely win more than you lose, I think. It’s also fun to see everybody work that hard and blocking shots and standing up for each other. So it’s a good feeling so far.”

On the young players:

“My first year, I knew the start’s so important to stay in this league and get confidence. A lot of times when you come up, technically’s not the toughest part, it’s mentally, to know you can play this game and make good decisions. So when you come up and work hard and it pays off and you play good games, and even score goals, for a new guy it’s very important, especially for their confidence and to relax and just play their game. I know how they feel. I’ve been there myself.”
