Goodbye, 2010

155

The calendar year sure has brought a mixed bag, hasn’t it? Through 2010, the Rangers went 41-30-8 (which is actually 41-38),  fell apart late last January, rallied in late-March and early April, didn’t make the playoffs, and now have had this impressive first half.

They have had guys who were jettisoned: Donald Brashear, Wade Redden, Olli Jokinen, Ales Kotalik, Christopher Higgins, Enver Lisin, Aaron Voros, Jody Shelley, P.A. Parenteau, Steve Valiquette, Ocho Cinco, Todd White to name a few.

And guys who arrived and surprised and reversed everything about this team: Derek Stepan, Brandon Prust, Brian Boyle, Mike Sauer, Steve Eminger, Martin Biron, Ruslan Fedotenko, Mats Zuccarello, Dale Weise (withholding judgment on Derek Boogaard and Alex Frolov).

Oh, and a new coach. Well, the same coach, only with a different persona (he’s once again the guy we knew when he was an assistant and then an interim head coach for four games in 2000), and one who is doing a much, much, much better job, and the driving force behind the get-young movement and the patience that movement requires.

It’s night and day, isn’t it?

The Rangers don’t hit the halfway mark until Wednesday, when they play their only home game in a six-game stretch (against Carolina). So I won’t get into my mid-term grading just yet. But 2010 sure has been two different years.

————————-

The NHL hasn’t promoted it much, so here’s a reminder: The Winter Classic is tomorrow. I think Sidney Crosby is playing Alex Ovechkin, from what little I’ve seen and read about it.

Me? I’ll turn it on for a while on New Year’s Day, but I will be at the very least sharing my attention with The Honeymooners marathon, and then your boys in Tampa at 7, the first of 2011 back-to-backs in the Sunshine State.

————————–

Forgot to mention yesterday that Crosby’s point streak ended at 25 games. So I guess we can surmise that he’s almost half as good as The Great One. Almost. And we can hope that hideous caterpiller is shaved from above his northern lip in time for his game against Ovechkin.

Behave yourselves tonight. It’s Amateur Night, you know, so be careful.

I’m rarely in the top 3 anymore (stupid job)!

  2. Hey gang!

I love 3 days weekends thanks to holidays falling on Saturdays.

2010 sure was interesting and roller-coaster year, both for the Rangers and myself. Here’s to hoping 2011 is a much steadier and more successful year for everyone.

  3. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    mickey
what is a 3 day weekend? What is a weekend??

  4. Good afternoon all! Mickey, I’m with you sister! Goodbye and good riddance to 2010 (except the part of the Rangers doing well in the second half, you guys, and all of Carp )
Everyone be safe tonight…Happy New Year to you all!

P.S. re: last thread…sure hope we don’t have any SO’s in the next 4 to 6 weeks….get well soon EC!

  5. BWAHAHA!!

Did anyone hear the latest on the Rex Ryan/Mrs. Ryan foot fetish stuff??

    Here’s the latest details…

“Photos posted to Mediatakeout.com purport to show Michelle posing for graphic pics, including ones where her feet are being admired by a man that clearly isn’t Rex (first hint: different skin color)”

    What the fugg??

NHL never has any funny controversy!

  6. Blogmama – If our goalie can save all attempts, we’ll be just fine with MZA in shootouts! haha
Maybe Weise can do the job, too. And we better see Avery there again.

  7. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

In case I don’t get the time later, Happy New Year to all of you and please be safe if you go anywhere!!!

  8. Amateur Night. Too funny!

Be safe everyone. We need every Bonehead back here in 2011 pulling for the Rangers.

    LGR!

will the “e” be back in 2011??

  10. Good point Spider. But SOs are for carcillo anyway so I still hope we don’t have any :)
So happy I’ll be home for game tomorrow! LGR and let’s start the new year right!

  11. You can turn the Sid verses Alex “The caveman” Ovechkin game on tomorrow, but From what I have heard it might be posponed until Sunday. Warm, rainy , conditions are not great for making ice I guess. To bad about Christinson, that injury may be real hard on him and his career. I hope he recovers quickly. The Rangers will miss him, like he plays. Sometimes.

  12. Wicky, it’s hard to say about the “e”. I’m not sure I even like the “j”! Most people call me Margie. But I thought I would try jie, then ji,….. am I dragging this on too long? Me thinks, yes! Anyhoooo, they’re all m(e).

Can you tell there’s no game tonight?

  13. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

for all the rumour mongers out there…

    TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
I have no specifics and am up to eyes in WJC, but my sense is we’ll see some NHL trades (didn’t say big ones) in coming days. TOR? Possibly.

  14. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    marji
thanks for the update, just trying to prep myself for the upcoming year!

  15. A couple of world junior games on today. Canada vs. Swedan, and the U.S. are playing the Swiss. The Canada Swedan game should be a good one, but I don’t expect much from the Swiss in the other.

  16. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

a balmy -17 last night when I got off of work last night. Love this time of year!!

  17. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

and a lot of “last night’s” in that last post….sheesh!!

  18. Thinking of my last post, I recall doing that very thing as a kid. We would be out there playing in any weather, and when the puck dropped into a hole, there would be a bunch of us around the hole poking at the puck trying to get it out of there and keep possession. Fond memories.

  19. fran

If Dubi is the brain of this team and Cally is the heart, would Todd White be it’s appendix?

  20. Todd White would be an extra digit, dde….You can rest assured I can come with much graphic anatomical analogy.
Can we all leave his name in 2010?

Wicky, make sure you stay in well air conditioned area, that heat wave could be a killer!
Have fun with The Honeymooners, Carp!

Is there “The Biggest Loser” show in NHL? I have a candidate. NJ Devils record in December is 1-10.

  21. Happy New Year! Great coverage on NHL Network of Winter Classic practices and family skates. And the Crosby “moustache” is gone.

  22. For all the rumor mongers out there… Brian Burke loves Hobey Baker winners…
Not hard to connect the dots on that one…… Kaberle?

    Komisarek? Colton Orr?

    Grachev going?

  23. lol ilb thx for sparing us and thx Orr for not posting any herpes riddled appendage pix

Don’t recall where I saw it, but I thought it was interesting that Derek Stepan played only 81 games combined the last two years at Wisconsin but 117 games in the two years before that at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s HS.

Sidney Crosby, Zach Parise, and Jonathan Toews attended the same school.

  24. I love the nickname: Dale “The Whale”. But since he is on the Rangers now and not the Whale, shouldn’t we come up with new nickname for him? Suggestions?

  25. Dale “The Pale” Weise?

He looks a wee bit pale? Maybe it was just the lights.

Or maybe we should call him “Haterade”, since he probably hates gatorade bottles since they tried to kill him.

I’m really happy he’s up. He played really good against the Flyers. I thought he should have gotten another shot.

  26. From what I’ve heard, Horak has had a quiet tourney for the Czechs. Apparently the coach hasn’t put him in a scoring role even though he has been tearing it up in Chilliwack this season:
    30GP 15G 23A 38PTS

  27. Haha…”Haterade” is a good one, Orr.

I was thinking Dale “The Jaminator” Weise, since he plays with so much “jam”.

I am also happy he is up. It is always nice to see a homegrown, hungry young player get a chance to play for the NYR.

  28. Happy New Years Everybody!!!

It’s great to have such beautiful people that we can all call true friends!

Good Riddance to 2010….footgate, tripgate, yankees lose, blogmama lost job, passed puppies…… but Ive gotten to know all of you wonderful people, especially the Blogmama!!!

Blogmama = the beauty and class of a queen, and the perfection of a Yankee/Lundqvist/Jaromir!

  29. >>What’s ur fav Honeymooners episode Carp?

Oh nooo!!! Please NO! I can’t take any more Honeymooners or Seinfeld discussions.

  30. Blueshirt in Paris on

Funny, when I read the first batch of names it felt like something was stuck in my throat..;the second batch I had a warm feeling reading every name.

I like this team, plain and simple. I like the players, I like the coach, i like the attitude and I like the future. Finally.

    Happy 2011 to all

  31. go devils and panthers

    happy new year boneheads.

3/22 tues 7pm vs florida looking to sell. $110 for pair section 330 aisle seats face value
    email me baum27@aol.com if interested

  32. Are the 24/7 episodes 2+ online? I haven’t found them.

And I’m thinking because he has a ‘drinking’ problem maybe we call Dale. D We

  33. Carp, thanks for a great 2010. This site is very entertaining and it is even better with the Rangers doing well.

    Happy New Year everyone.

  34. >>US doesn’t play until 10 tonight?

The USA match is at 20:00.

Canada vs. Sweden is in twenty minutes.

  35. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    ILB
    yes, we opened the windows!

    I like haterade!

    I’d take komisarek.

  36. Even though JBytes doesn’t want to hear it, I just have to say that the all time best Honeymooners episode was the ‘Blabbermouth’ show. Thats all I’ll say about it.

  37. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

damn lapierre got traded to the ducks, I would have taken him in a heartbeat!!

  38. Julie-Who Hardly Ever Posts on

Happy New Year everyone! Whatever you do, be safe! Here’s looking to a great 2011 for the Rangers!

  39. Lines for tomorrow

Brandon Dubinsky, Derek Stepan, Marian Gaborik
Alex Frolov, Artem Anisimov, Mats Zuccarello
Ruslan Fedotenko, Brian Boyle, Brandon Prust
Sean Avery, Chris Drury, Dale Weise

And Dallas’ GM says they’re going to try to sign Richards. Don’t know if they meant during or after the season, but it’s pretty safe to bet that they wont trade him at the deadline, unless they have a major collapse in the final few months.

  40. What, now we have an embargo on Honeymooners and Seinfeld? What gives?

OK fine Jbytes, but come midnight when you’re looking for someone warm and cuddly to kiss, I guess you’ll be caught between the moon and New York City.

  41. wicky(grating CCBG)© (The game’s not over until somebody cries!!) on

    orr
yep, he has good hands around the net and really pisses the other team off.

  42. I’m with you, Jbytes. No more Honeymooners or Seinfeld discussions. We need to talk lines. How about this line combo:

    Ed Norton-Kramden-Cosmo
    G. Costanza-Izzy-F.Costanza
    Jerry-Morty-Uncle Leo

    Newman (Marty size) in goal.

    hamana-hamana-hamana?

  43. See how devious I was to get you guys talking about a Seinfeld reference which was about Christopher Cross? Kind of fun wasn’t it?

Now if you’ll excuse me I have to get my ice and balloons over to that revolving restaurant that overlooks Times Square.

  44. I’m back. Apparently mrs doesn’t trust my gift wrapping ability. She mentioned something about “even if your life depended on it…”

  45. Anyone have a creative alternative to the OT/SO?
Skillz comp is fun to watch but not the best way to settle a game. What about each team getting a PP instead? 4 on 3 maybe for a better success rate.
Alternating like college football OT. Although it would probably lack the exciting transition game that the 4 on 4 has. But it could be exciting when the team that scored first has to kill off the power play for the win while the other team is in desperation mode.

    Too gimmicky?

  46. I have an autographed pic of Captain America he was doing a signing at the local supermarket and my sister thought I was a Devils fan lol. Should I sell low?

  47. A big Happy New Year to everyone! Please have a great night, and be safe. Here is to a great 2011 for our boys in blue, and all of you.

  48. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " BOOOO Shoot out are for soccer"...& Greg L. on

yeah baby!!!! this is OUR year , OUR time!!!! we can do it. I believe , you believe!!!!!

  53. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " BOOOO Shoot out are for soccer"...& Greg L. on

Dude , I like yer answer but yer wrong. If the Flyers.the Flyers!!??? left for dead by thier OWN fans cuz they sucked so bad..could not clinch the playoff spot untill the shoot out.The Flyer were and are garbage…they had a cinderella run and If we won ( big if) we would have been there too. Look Orr I know you never celebrated our last win cuz ya were too young but believe dude , we can honestly do it…I swear dude we can.

  54. >>…we can honestly do it…I swear dude we can.

We can go deep, but I seriously doubt we can win it all. No amount of belief is going to make up for lack of talent. Heart and jam will only take us so far.

  55. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! HEALTH, WEALTH AND HAPPINESS TO ALL!
