It’s Go Time!

And here’s what I know about the backup goalie:

Tom Fenton of Purchase, who works at Manhattanville college and is an assistant hockey coach at the school, found himself as an NHL goalie Thursday night.

Or, at least, a backup goalie.

Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov became ill during the day leading up to the before the Coyotes’ game against the Rangers, and it was too late for Phoenix to recall a goalie from its minor-league team in San Antonio.

So Coyotes GM Don Maloney — the former Rangers player and executive, and local resident — got on the phone to try to find a goalie in the New York area.

“We were scrambling,” Maloney said.

He found a few possibilities, but one didn’t have his equipment, another was headed out of town. Sean Burke, the team’s goalie coach and former NHL goalie, could not be signed to an amateur tryout deal since he had been a pro.

So Maloney spoke with one of his scouts, former Rye Country Day and Iona College coach Frank Effinger, who got in touch with Fenton, the head of team operations and community relations at Manhattanvile who played goalie at American International College, and signed him to an standard amateur tryout contract, which consists of not much more than per diem.

And kept his fingers crossed all night that nothing happened to starter Jason LaBarbera.
