Eye on the officials

As you surely recall, the Rangers did not get a single power play in the game the last time they played the Penguins, the first time in almost two years that occurred.

As you also recall, Henrik Lundqvist put the Rangers short-handed late in the game by destroying his stick and flinging it toward the referees after giving up the go-ahead goal.

And that the Rangers (Marc Staal) actually scored short-handed to tie the game late, then won it on Ryan Callahan’s OT goal.

But, according to Andrew Gross, what you didn’t know is that John Tortorella called Colin Campbell and Mike Murphy at NHL HQ in Toronto to complain.

Here’s the quote from Andrew’s blog:

“I had major concerns after the game in Pittsburgh,” Tortorella said. “You don’t want to whine in this league about it, but I did have a conversation with Murph and Colie regarding that, not only some of the non-calls against us but some of the calls against us and some of the non-calls against them. But I don’t want that to take on a life of its own. I think, as a coach and manager, you need to be aware of that as the year goes on and if you have a gripe, you talk about it. But we certainly don’t want to get into a situation where we’re going to whine about it all the time.”

It doesn’t appear there will be any John Tortorella press conference before the game tonight. Marian Gaborik is still, as best we can tell, a game-time decision. But it sounds as if he’s doubtful. And Derek Boogaard remains out.

  1. >>…Booger Forsberg. This guy can’t stay healthy.

I don’t know, but punching helmets with his bare fist and having his head pummelled are good enough reasons to me.

  2. I just realized that we should be lucky that the Rangers don’t play any Saturday night home games because it means we get Carp for more games, as it seems like he’s always on the high school beat on Saturday.

Winning this game would be just awesome. Crosby has to slow down at some point – too bad we don’t have Betts (haha), but we do have Callahan, Dubinsky, and Staal to throw at him.

How come nobody is being called up to take Gaborik’s place since they have the advance warning now? I guess Torts is comfortable with 7 D?

Ah, the Connecticut Whale era has officially begun on Saturday night. I wish the uniforms were more similar to the Whalers, but the NHL probably would have blocked that, as it looks like Whalers merch is still in high demand.

  3. Gaborik, Boogaard, Johan Santana. Looks like those harsh Minny winters take their toll on athletes that move East. Just kidding. But when does Joe Mich go put on the LTIR with head up posterior disorder?

  4. What did Booger do to his shoulder anyway? Did he hurt it playing with his build-a-bear creation?

Or maybe it’s from that slap shot goal. He’s probably still in shock, and it’s causing pain around his body.

  5. Spider
the hurricane still own the name i believe. also i was kinda wondering the same thing as to why no one was called up. theres this kid in hartford who is playing pretty well but his name escapes me at the moment…

  6. Jay Riemenschneider on

I’m going to go out on a limb here… the Rangers will indeed get a power play opportunity this evening.

  7. Yeah, but said power play will probably not come before the second period. You know those referees will try to play head games with the Rangers.

  8. Just found out theres a ticket with my name on it….

…. and that I wouldnt get to see Boogard punchisize a Penguin. DAMNIT

I hope to see either Sauer or Staal on the ice everytime Cindy is on the ice.

Just a guess either dubinsky or sauer lays the wood to cindy tonight.

  10. Doodie Machetto on

boxcar, so long as Staal isn’t paired with Girardi, I’m all for that. Otherwise, they will both watch as Crosby scores multiple goals against their pathetic stick-check efforts.

  11. According to the “Stats” tab on top, Boogaard has a .250 scoring percentage. 4 shots on goal, 1 goal. Highest on the team, maybe the league. We need his scoring touch. Ha.

  12. Lisa Rinna! Hahaha.

I didn’t even know who that was until I saw a poster on the train the other night. I imagine those who watch that show are called The Biggest Losers.

    Doodie good point.

I have a real good feeling sauer lays him out tonight.
I think Sauer is itching to drop the gloves with anyone.
