RANGERS ACQUIRE DEFENSEMAN STU BICKEL
New York sends defenseman Nigel Williams to Anaheim

New York, November 23, 2010 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Stu Bickel from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman Nigel Williams.

Bickel, 24, has registered three assists and 14 penalty minutes in six games with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season.  He currently ranks third among team defensemen in penalty minutes.  Bickel has recorded an assist in each of his last two games, on November 20 vs. Springfield and November 21 at Rochester.  Prior to joining the Crunch, Bickel skated in one ECHL game with the Elmira Jackals.

The 6-4, 218-pounder has skated in 63 career AHL contests with the Iowa Chops, San Antonio Rampage and Syracuse Crunch, registering two goals and six assists for eight points, along with 103 penalty minutes.  Bickel recorded two goals and four points last season with San Antonio, and tallied his first career AHL goal on January 23, 2010 vs. Milwaukee.  Bickel made his professional debut with Iowa on October 10, 2008, vs. Peoria, and registered his first career point with an assist on February 16, 2009, vs. Lake Erie.  Bickel has also skated in 25 career ECHL games with the Bakersfield Condors and Elmira Jackals, registering one goal and 12 assists for 13 points, along with 50 penalty minutes and a plus-14 rating.

Prior to turning professional, Bickel appeared in 45 career games in one season with the University of Minnesota Gophers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), registering one goal and six assists for seven points, along with a team-high, 92 penalty minutes.  Helped lead Minnesota to the NCAA Regionals, where they were eliminated by the eventual champions, Boston College.  Bickel also recorded an assist on the Gophers’ only goal in the WCHA Final Five title game, a 2-1 loss vs. Denver.

The Chanhassen, Minnesota native was originally signed by Anaheim as an undrafted free agent on July 2, 2008.

Williams, 22, has registered one assist in 12 games with Hartford (AHL) this season.  The Aurora, Illinois native was originally Colorado’s second round choice, 51st overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.  He was acquired by the Rangers on July 16, 2009, from the Avalanche in exchange for Brian Fahey.

This was an easy first… not that I’m ever trying. I guess that’s the beauty of being on the left coast.

  2. Somebody over on the NYRblog thought they traded Williams for a pickle. The big question was kosher or dill?

  3. Who comes up with the names of these AHL teams???!!! Chop and Crunch? Really? Sounds like breakfast cereal…..

  4. Big guy. Guess they needed a new enforcer in Hartford since Brashear sadly left them this offseason.
Williams was too deep on their d-men depth chart anyway, he had no chance to make it.

  5. those CT Whale jerseys are pretty awful….the logo ruins it

Nigel Williams whined about playing time , demanded a trade, and was quoted by Bruce Berlet as saying “No %&$#ing was I’m coming back here” last spring.

  6. I’m watching the NHL Net’s show Oil Change. It’s a good watch for any Tom Renney and Kevin Lowe fans out there. Damn, Taylor Hall has his some Cindy Crosby lips…wow!

Just reminded myself of how Carp eloquently referred to Crosby after the Rangers/Penguins game: Old Hot Dog Lips

    haha!!

  7. NYR_FAN, wish I could take credit for that line, but many Boneheads used it before I adopted it. Also known as Sausage Lips, Oscar Mayer lips, etc.

  8. TR, that hit was nasty. looked like intent to kill…I’m talking about the initial boarding hit!

  9. Carp, when you talk to Sam don’t forget to ask him if he wants RR T-shirt. I still have one I kept for him, just in case. It’s in L

  10. someone asked earlier who the color guy with Doc Emrick was during game 6 in 94. it was Peter McNabb. I believe he is now the color guy in Colorado.

  11. I share a birthday with Kelly Brook [babe], Miley Cyrus [annoying chick], and Snooki [super annoying chick]

That Kelly Brook is a babe. Brit babe!

Anyway, this Stu Bickel guy sounds like the real deal! Dredden should take him under his wing and show him the way!

  12. that Whale jersey is just………..too stunned for words.

it looks like a beached whale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    sheesh!

anyone know why they couldn’t be called the Whalers or is that name in
infinite limbo by the nhl and hurricanes owner?

  13. Evening gang!

    Happy birthday, Orr.

Nice to see Darth is still alive and kicking. Unless they are just propping him up and Schoeney made the deal.

As I said on the last thread, this seems like a “make nice” trade with the Anaheim GM to build up relations after fleecing him in the Eminger-Voros trade.

  15. I don’t think Slats “fleeced” them. Eminger didn’t work out there. And up until recently, he sure as sh*t wasn’t working out here either.

Like I’ve said in the past, I wish Voros was still a Ranger. Even if he was prucha’d in all “83” games.

  16. in regards to doing a write-in vote for Avery

do i put his name in there and not bother to vote for any of the other
forwards in order to make it stick
    or vote all the categories
as well as put his name as a write-in?

ORR, hope you had a great birthday!!

Gab…. Congrats on your wedding tomorrow! LIL BONEHEADS A YEAR AWAY!!!

  18. Lin, sadly it’s been one of the worst. I’m horribly sick, I can barely lift a muscle, and a few hours after I woke up, I spent *four-five* hours dealing with two annoying viruses that came out of nowhere, then I realized I wouldn’t enjoy my Buffalo Chicken Pizza because I’m so sick that I can’t even taste anything. On top of that, there’s a massive Snickers ice-cream cake with reese’s pieces sticking out of it that I also could barely taste. Then to add the icing to my sh*t cake, I bought a coat online for fuggin $80, and it was supposed to be a size small, but the cooke-head sent me a size XL, and I’m trying to get a hold of the guy, but he completely disappeared off the face of the planet, like he’s Bin Laden.

Also, while spending time with my two little cousins, I watched a TV show with them that I sadly, very sadly, enjoyed. I don’t even have the heart to say it. I’ve admitted to watching Gossip Girl, and an episode of Jersey Shore, among other things, but this is something that makes me extra sick!

I better get my taste buds back by Thanksgiving, or there will be hell to pay!

  19. Linda CalPrustBoylahan on

LMAO ORR!!! sorry you’re sick and did not get to fully enjoy your birthday. I hope you’re better for Thanksgiving too, so you can enjoy what sounds to be an amazing cake!! And please don’t tell me you watched Wizards of Waverly Place lol ;-)

  20. Linda CalPrustBoylahan on

OMG CT…. if it’s dancing with the stars, ORR might have to hand in his man card……..
WAIT OMG IT WAS GLEE WASNT IT????????????????????? ORR, are you a GLEEK?!?!?!

Why a whale logo for Hartford? They aren’t even on the coast fer cripes sake! It’s a town full of insurance companies. They should be the Hartford Deductible or something. Even the Gekkos would be better. Then they can keep that byfuglien green color… Jeez, my liver is a better green color than that.

Olga, you always know how to eloquently state things. Precisely why we are best friends :)

haha Olga. I am more than willing to loan you $200. Giving you my pin? Now that is a different story.

  24. Olga Folkyerself's best friend Eye Folkmehself on

Of course we are friends. My pin is always 5611. For Lawrence Taylor and Phil Simms :)

  25. Olga Folkyerself on

    Mine is 1234. I have a bad memory…

Now you promised not to use it…

BTW, how much you got in the account?

  26. Olga Folkyerself's best friend Eye Folkmehself on

I do not know why I made that mistake. For Lawrence Taylor and Mark Messier. NOT Phil Simms. NOT Phil Simms.

  27. Olga Folkyerself's best friend Eye Folkmehself on

    I have $1,234 in the account. I have a bad memory too…

Now you have to promise to only take $234 out.

  28. Olga Folkyerself's best friend Eye Folkmehself on

You are not going to rip me off Olga. You are too full of integrity to do that. I will join your FIRE SATHER rally!

    tiki
where the hell was I in the line up you posted?? Prucha’d???

my game review…..staal’s hit was massive and clean, that is what I am talking about……sauer is doing what we needed d men to do for the past few years…..I have to give kudos to torts, great move by putting boogie on the ice……eminger, nice to see the rest of you coming over to what I have been saying about him since the beginning of the season…..I wish we could have vtank in the rozy/gilroy slot, but the other 5 slots seem good for now…..I also hope prospal takes the year off and drury takes the EC spot…biron is doing his job well.

I disagree with the people in the media that say it is stupid when a guy makes a clean hit and then has to defend himself. Clean, hard hits are a part of hockey and I agree 100%, but so is standing up for teammates and emotion. Keep the clean hard hits coming in hockey and keep the scrums and fights that follow them in hockey as well!!!

Lastly, you guys must really be concerned because most of you are raving about a team playing the way I have been saying they needed to play since the lockout. Physical, in your face, not taking any crap, hard hitting hockey!

  33. Hugo Folkyerself on

I don’t know if a Jewel fit in. We’re not too religious here… :) Bitschko, maybe you better wait outside with Mother…

It’s been quite a family reunion tonight, there are quite a lot of new family members. van Gogh, Juwanna, Juicer Congo, Gowan, Shirle, Jewel, Hope Nyu, I sure hope some of the family comes back to visit the blog again. Carp needs the hits…

Bitschko wait in the van, I’m not sure how you got past the censors…

    Nytol.

  36. Hugo Folkyerself on

It was a slow hockey night, and there was a lot of alcohol involved… but it’s not all my fault… Blame it on Otto. He the son of a Bitschko here…

  37. NYR Fan
what would you expect? Unless memory fails me these
are the same people who raised Rick Ley’s jersey into the rafters, and who promoted a parade thru Hartford when the team won their first round playoffs.

In short, their taste is all in their mouths, as the saying goes.

They should have just brought back the original shirts, and colors…they were great. these are ridiculous.
