Devils’ dog and pony show

We don’t usually go too deep with the opponent, but I figured you guys would like the idea that the real circus is across the river now. It used to be the Rangers who were always doing something controversial, always making the big news, often embarrassingly so.
Now it’s the Devils, who with this whole John MacLean-Ilya Kovalchuk ordeal, are the clowns. Because the longer they continue their “no comment” policy, the longer they will invite the media to play an investigative/guessing game as to what really happened. And it will come out eventually.
Tonight they had a crowd of media outside their room, bigger than the group they get for playoff games. Of course, it helped that they were in Manhattan, and there’s no more baseball, and no local football today.
Ilya Kovalchuk (who is playing tonight):
On being benched last night.
“That’s his decision.”
How he was told.
“Yesterday after pregame skate.”
How was it said?
“Just, ‘you’re not playing tonight.’ Simple.”
“No comments about it. I love to play. That’s the bottom line.”
Healthy scratches in his past (Tom Gulitti found a couple in Atlanta, one for missing a meeting).
“Long time ago. But it happened before.”
Was it about his performance, or something off the ice.
“No comment on that.”
“It’s over. The issue’s over. I talked about it yesterday. It’s an internal matter.”
What changed between yesterday and today?
“Nothing. Just a new game.”
“We talked (today).”
Is it settled?
Did he miss a meeting?
“As I said yesterday it’s an internal matter between him and I. That’s as far as we’re going.”
Was he aware that this would be a big news story?
“Oh, sure. I understand, when you make a decision, and I stand by my decision. Today’s a new day and we move forward.”
Here’s the official word on the recall of Jeremy Williams:
NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION UPDATE
New York, October 24, 2010 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Jeremy Williams has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Williams, 26, notched the Wolf Pack’s only goal in a 2-1 overtime loss vs. Syracuse last night in Hartford. He currently leads Hartford and is tied for 11th in the AHL with four goals, including two power goals, and is tied for second on the Wolf Pack in scoring with six points. Williams recorded his first point with Hartford in his season debut, tallying the game winning goal, on the power play, in a 4-2 win on October 9 vs. Charlotte. He registered a point in four of his first five games of the season, recording three goals and two assists over the span, including his first multi-point performance with Hartford on October 17 (one goal and one assist).
The 6-0, 191-pounder has tallied a goal in his season debut in each of his four NHL seasons. In 2009-10, Williams notched a goal in five of his first six NHL games with Toronto, and has registered nine goals and two assists for 11 points in 31 career regular season contests with the Maple Leafs.
The Regina, Saskatchewan native was originally Toronto’s seventh round choice, 220th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
