Stepan wins Sjoberg; White, Kennedy clear

132

First, Todd White and Tim Kennedy cleared waivers at noon today. The Rangers can assign them to Hartford within 30 days without putting them through waivers again.

Second, Andrew Gross is reporting that John Tortorella said he can’t count on Vinny Prospal’s return. Of course his season, and thus his career, might be over. Tortorella said he will name a new alternate captain (pet peeve: it’s NOT ASSISTANT captain). Marian Gaborik? He wore the A in the preseason.

Third, Prospal and Chris Drury were placed on IR to start the season, getting the Rangers to the max 23-man roster; and under the salary cap.

Fourth, Derek Stepan — absolutely no surprise — won the Lars-Erik Sjoberg award as the outstanding rookie in camp.

Here’s that announcement from the Rangers:

DEREK STEPAN NAMED WINNER OF LARS-ERIK SJOBERG AWARD

Honor given to top rookie in Training Camp

New York, October 6, 2010 – Center Derek Stepan has been named the winner of the 2010 Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award, given to the best Rangers rookie in training camp, as voted on by the members of the media.  Stepan played in five preseason games, registering three goals and two assists for five points.  He tied for the team lead in goals, ranked first in shots (14), and tied for second in points.  His one shorthanded goal was tied for the league lead.

Stepan, 20, was originally the Rangers second round choice, 51st overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.  Ranked 16th overall among NHL prospects by The Hockey News on their 2010 Future Watch list, he registered 12 goals and 42 assists for 54 points, along with eight penalty minutes in 41 games with the University of Wisconsin Badgers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).  He established career-highs in games played, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes.  Stepan ranked among the NCAA leaders in several scoring categories, finishing tied for first in the nation in assists and ranked second in points.  He registered six points (two goals and four assists) in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, including a four-point performance (two goals and two assists) and the game-winning goal in the National Semifinal contest vs. R.I.T., to lead Wisconsin to the National Championship game.

Stepan served as Captain of Team USA at the 2010 World Junior Championship, leading the United States to their second Gold Medal (2004) in the elite tournament.  He led all skaters in assists and points en route to being named to the tournament All-Star Team, as selected by the media.  Stepan finished the tournament with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points in seven games.

The Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award was established in memory of Lars-Erik Sjoberg, who was one of the first European scouts to work with an NHL team and was influential in the drafting of twenty New York Rangers players.  Previous winners include Matt Gilroy, Marc Staal, Henrik Lundqvist, Marc Savard, Tony Amonte and Mike Richter.

CORRECTION: Tortorella is not naming a new alternate captain; but somebody will wear the “A” in Prospal’s absence.

Also, I think it would be better fitting for Staal to get the A instead of Gaborik. Give him some leadership responsibilities to accompany that new contract.

  2. bull dog line on

I like Prospal, but his injury may be a blessing in disguise. the opportunity for Zuccarello, Grachev, or Weisse may come earlier because of this injury, and I think the more young players getting an opportunity the better.

  3. bull dog line on

I saw Gaborik, and Boyle wearing the A in pre season, not sure if Staal did. but he would make sense.

  4. :( feel bad for Prospal, I think he could have contributed a bunch this season.

Maybe MZA or Kennedy get a shot now for majority of the season.

  5. Prospal is keeping up with his career numbers… good season followed by a bad season…which in this case could be no season at all. Tough break for Vinny indeed.

  6. I don’t know if Prospal’s injury changes a whole lot right now considering Drury will probably be back within the first few games. They’ll have to move one of the existing forwards down afterwards.

  7. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

    repost after a carping:

if would like to see the A go to avery, prust, or maybe staal. My guess is it goes to rozy or gabby

  8. Carp,

What’s the deal with your pet peeve? I’ve always called it Assistant Captain and I prefer it over alternate. Alternate suggests it doesn’t matter you can alternate who ever is captain. Assistant means there’s one captain and there are other who help him. That’s the way I think the captaincy works best…

  9. That could be it for Vinny. Too bad, he could still play for a couple.

I hope they didn’t take too long to figure out who was the best rookie in camp lol

  10. Always nice to have a bit more depth in the system. Last year Vinny’s injury would be a major disaster. This year- not so much. MZA?

  11. CTB- White moves to your neighborhood the moment Drury is back. And Kennedy is the next one to go.

  12. Per the NHL rulebook:

6.2 Alternate Captains – If the permanent Captain is not on the ice,
Alternate Captains (not more than two) shall be accorded the
privileges of the Captain. Alternate Captains shall wear the letter “A”
approximately three inches (3”) in height and in contrasting color, in a
conspicuous position on the front of their sweaters.
Only when the Captain is not in uniform, the Coach shall have the
right to designate three Alternate Captains. This must be done prior to
    the start of the game.

  13. White is a little too well paid to live in neighborhood. I think he’d look at something closer to LI Sound.

  14. Ely, it’s a pet peeve because the actual term is “alternate captain” according to the rules and hockey history. Not assistant.

  15. Why exactly is Prospal’s career possibly over? Is it the same as the Pavel Bure knee problem? And if so, why didn’t the Rangers medical staff know this last spring?
It’s great to have young prospects, but Prospal was a very valuable player on this team, and despite the hoopla over the young guys, solid veterans are very important.
And Gaborik should definitely have the “A”.

  16. And it’s the Stanley Cup Final not the Stanley Cup Final*s*.

    ———-

WHOA!! You just blew my mind away with that statement!

  17. bull dog line on

Boyle, and Fedotenko made the team? how did that happen? I thought only one of the two were aloud.

  18. I heard Barry Melrose call it the finals. You’re telling me Barry Melrose is wrong???

  19. Hey, did anyone ask Rosen how he lives with himself after lying to Ranger fans for 27 years?

He and JD should have restraining orders against them not to ever go near an NHL rink again, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way.

They get fat contracts and NYR fans got the fat shaft.

  20. ZzZz NYR ZzZzellotenko " Rangers rule!!!" ...says Greg L. on

Wille Mitchelle is Garbage I tell ya!!!

  21. I have a question for any and all…subject Norman Maclean, former Rangers fan extraordinaire….he was a friend of mine when we were young gents, and I lost track of him over my many travels, and experiences. Does anyone know if he is still with us..he used to live in either Yonkers or possibly
white Plains, but I believe Yonkers.

  22. ZzZz NYR ZzZzellotenko " Rangers rule!!!" ...says Greg L. on

Why would WE care ’bout Wille Mitchelle!!?? The Rangers know he’s a worthless sack of Carp. Its flat out embarassing that Rod would ask why wouldn’t we look into signing Wille. Rod has shined so many shoes , we could make him an honary “shoe-boy”!!

  23. Gift of GAB-orik ( Kovalchuk is the new Favre ) on

It is termed alternate captain because if the captain is unavailable due to injury, suspension, or what have you, the alternates assume the responsibility for the team, and speaking with referees and such.

It is not uncommon to have seen a player who wears the ‘A’, wear the ‘C’ when their captain is out.

  24. Gift of GAB-orik on

wow haven’t posted from my home computer in awhile… had to get that Kovalchuk-me a bunch of dollars reference off there.

  25. Gift of GAB-orik on

    Spider,

It will ultimately be up to Torts… and from the history he’s shown… i don’t think anyone will wear the ‘C’ in his absence. Though i’m sure the ‘A’ will be assigned at some point.

  26. ZzZz NYR ZzZzellotenko " Rangers rule!!!" ...says Greg L. on

Are we kidding ourselves? Seriously now.. When I watch the Rangers play , whom do I or we all watch?? Who dictates the game if we win or lose ( and no don’t say Hank). Who is the best Ranger …This person leads us night in and night out , some games not so much but when he comands the puck , other take notice. This guy gets paid the most. This guy is not over paid. This guy is a super star . He goes about his quiet way and speaks LOUDLY on the ice with his play . Who is this Captain of ours? Can you guys figure it out?

  27. Right, right, Sam Rosen is a paragon of virtue.

and your ignorant posts show exactly why they bs the fans, for the same reasons wall st was able to raid the us treasury. Because people believe what they’re told.

How do you think incompetents like glen sather keep their jobs? There’s no pressure on them, not from the reporters and certainly not from their home network.

Who is the rangers no. 1 ceneter again? Suckers…….

  28. Petr Prucha(notes) scored the go-ahead goal with two seconds left in the second period, and the Phoenix Coyotes went on to beat Dinamo Riga 3-1 on Wednesday.

    just saying :)

  29. bull dog line on

I think rod may be referring to the 7 seasons before the lockout when the Rangers were out of the playoffs every season. Sam and JD broadcast those games as if the Rangers had been defending cup champs every season, and not once did they criticize a player or anybody in the organization. broadcasting games in that way does a disservice to the fans.
    just guessing on rod.

  30. no fran i havent seen him. i’ll start looking here in iowa and you can meet me in ohio. i’ll dispatch my finest scout wicky stiglitz to search up north and greg in saskatoon. im sure if all us boneheads all over the country and canada start lookin, we can find him!! when boneheads put their heads together they can do things

  31. rod said they lied to us for 27 years… i guess from the day one

    bull dog

do you actually remember for a fact that they never, not even once, criticized any player of the organization back then?

Did you not see how bad those teams were? Did you not still go to games? I bet you (and everyone else) did… i dont think you should bite a hand that feeds you

Rangers fans should blame themselves from being always so fuggin loyal.

  32. Who cares aboot the Alternate Assistants of the Captains, and the Captain!

    They’re all meaningless letters.

Give Boyle the “A” for all I care!

The real Captain is Sather. This is his boat. Or maybe he’s the iceberg that we’re constantly crashing into!

  33. stop the feeding and good evening all!

Awww, I feel awful for Vinny. But congrats to the Stepster!

Got my tix for the 24th today, whooo hooo!

Carp, nice job on he Q&A. Is the team using it somewhere since they asked you to do it?

wicky, I like your choices :)

  34. Yes, Rod. You are possibly the only person in the last decade to either notice that Sather has been a tiny bit unsuccessful or to express any sentiment that the broadcasters on MSG may not express the most impartial or negative opinions on the Rangers at times (Paid employees of the franchise! Not criticising their bosses on air! Shocker!)

So, thanks for pointing that out to us mere lapdogs.

  35. Yeah, I think at the first preseason game, Gaborik was the only one with a letter because Callahan, Drury, and Prospal all weren’t playing. I was surprised it wasn’t Rozsival.

  36. bull dog line on

    CCCP,
I remember feeling that way, JD especially would drive me crazy. because I knew he knew better that what he was seeing was crap hockey.

  37. C3Penko! no feeding!!!

hey, you coming to warren for the home opener or do you another excuse? :)

  38. bull dog

we all felt bad back then…and we all saw that it was crap hockey… as i said, it is silly to blame announcers for not talking crap about their employer on the air in front of thousands fans! lol

  39. yeah, I’ll just bet that Lou wants his employees to stand in front of their arena and shout nasty criticism of the debbies thru a bullhorn.

  40. OMG! We’ve been lied to for that many years? I can’t believe my ears! Just can’t! I’m totally destroyed by that notion. It would’ve never occurred to me if I didn’t find that useful information while catching up on the blog posts today. Now if you excuse me, I need to go and cry for a few minutes..

  41. Now Watching: “The Off-Season : P.K. Subban” on NHL Network.

I’m sorry, but what has this kid accomplished to be getting his own special already?

Between him and MDZ, I wonder which one will be the better player.

  42. OK, you guys will never guess who the next “The Off-Season” about.

Yep, Michael Del Zotto is being featured on NHL Network…right NOW.

  43. Mama, I was tempted to buy a small bag of peanuts but then I took pity on those poor nuts.

Even when my team isn’t the greatest, I still love the game. During those seasons when the loses are frequent and painful, I still celebrate each victory and hope that it’s the start of a winning streak. Hope springs eternal and it’s fun to dream. If Philly can play for the Cup, why can’t we? Let’s go Rangers!

  44. Mama do you know that Bruce has a special on HBO tomorrow night at 9:oo p.m.? Its called “The Promise” about the making of his album “Darkness on the edge of town”

  45. Ria, I am quite all over that, thanks. DVR cranked and ready!!!!!

OK, all, this is a blast :) but mama’s mama is coming to town tomorrow so I’m off. Gotta get the place spiffied up, hide all the contraband…:) Later taters!

  46. Pens-Philly tomorrow, is that scum Pronger playing? When’s the first time we play Philly? I’d like to see Booger reset Pronger’s clock to the date he retires.

  47. a great game pitched by halladay i can only hope CC pitches half as well. still jacked about hockey coming back this weekend but i am thankful i dont have to flip back and forth during the first couple playoff games like i had to do last year.

  48. Speaking of “Halliday”. I’m really looking forward to the greatest Halliday of the year, Thanksgiving!

I forget why we celebrate it, but all I care aboot is all the stuff I inhale on that day!

Just kidding, I remember why we celebrate Thanksgiving! But, I’m not kidding when I say I’m going to inhale all of my food!!

  49. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

Home on lunch and that is seriously like 5 mama (although I never saw the “word”)

I think they would be the most logical choices, but like I say I doubt if any of the get it.

I’d take willie mitchell right now over rozy, OPG, and eminger.

  50. Hey, Eric Cairns is on that list. I truly forgot how good he was.
Hey, wicky, eats lunch at 8:29 pm?

  51. CCCP,

See if you can grasp this. For almost 100 yeras, since the advent of “mass media” which began with radio, it was the standard in sports broadcasting to essentially shoot straight with the viewers. Sure there were exceptions, especially as things “progressed” and many teams hired ex-jocks who couldn’t help but show a tinge of sentimentality for the home team. But on balance, the goal was always to enhance the viewers experience, not try to deceive them into not believing what they were seeing.

This is a new phenomenon that is a direct result of the corporatization of sports, where the same company often owns the team, the building, and the network they transmit on, and where games are “packaged” to sell everything from tickets to their favorite charities.

MSG, obviously has been a forerunner in this, and again Ill ask but in a different way..how is it possible IN HIS 11TH YEAR at the helm does Sather not only not have a No. 1 center, but no one even close to resembling one?

Keep making your jokes and insults, but you quite obviously knew none of this, and I have better things to do than give you the history lessons you need. So keep making your shinebox jokes and sounding like the jackov you are. Jackoff.

  52. i feel terrible for Prospal…he was one of the few players that played with fire all last season. He is a perfect type veteran: still skillful, charismatic and fast. i wish him well.

  53. N.CountryNYRFan on

Yeah that sucks about Prospal I also liked his play. I think we could of counted on him for somewhere in the 50-70 point range. Hopefully someone can step up and make sure his loss doesn’t hurt the team as much. But then again maybe we’ll get lucky and he will only miss a month or so.

It will be interesting to watch who steps up (Stepan, Avery, Fedetenko, Frolov).

  54. I don’t know NCNYRFan, when it comes to old guys and their knees, it’s usually grim!

Hopefully Fedetenko can step it up this season. I just don’t want to be teased like Kotalgeek did last season. The great start, and the horrible finish.

  55. N.CountryNYRFan on

I’d rather listen to my teams announcers being overly optimistic or stretching the truth in a positive light, than them being brutally honest about a lousy team, what fun would that be? I mean c’mon do you really want to listen to tv announcers berating your team or management night in and night out. Why would you watch if they did that?? I don’t think it’s being lied to, i think their trying to have faith, hope, and to be loyal to a fan base who follows their team no matter bad they are.

  56. N.CountryNYRFan on

Orr, I have a feeling that Frolov is gonna put up some good numbers this year and not pull a Kotalik. All Kotalik had was a good shot, I think Frolov has more dimensions to his game.

  57. N.CountryNYRFan on

I am also very excited about this team, I think the team is finally heading in the right direction.

  58. That is awful news on Vinny. I feel so bad for him, he was one of the players I really took to last year. He always worked his tail off, and his enthusiasm (sp?) was infectious. Not to mention I think he brought a steady veteran presence to the team, and one that could translated Torts to his teammates.

On the brighter side, it might open a spot for sometime else to step it up.

Rozy should get the ‘A’ in Vinny’s absence.

  59. Gift of GAB-orik on

I think Mickey was sniffing some glue before he typed that. Rozy should have no business with an ‘A’ on his jersey. He’s not a leader(that i know of), and doesn’t exactly embody enthusiasm.

  60. Gift of GAB-orik on

Tough break for Prospal… but it actually helps more than it hurts in my opinion. Yes he had great enthusiasm, and good leadership… but now a younger player will get minutes he would have got. Still don’t know how EC gets first line duty. C’mon Stepan and Artie… do something!

  61. until captain craptastic gets back….
    A- Callahan
    A-Gaborik
    A-Staal

    when captain craptastic gets back
    C-Dreary
    A-Callahan
    A-Gaborik

  62. rod lurks

i would read your post if i cared but i dont..so i didnt read it…but im sure it was good…really! Thanks, come again.

  63. LOL at asking Sam why Mitchell ain’t a ranger!!

And I don’t want to cause waves here BUT…

Earlier today while discussing doc emericks absolute annoyance, bulldog line said he would rather listen to doc than Sam. and then just a bit ago he tries to support rod lurks(in the nvmc mens room)’s point?? What ranger fan who grew up watching rangers on MSG would make those two postings? I’m just sayin’

  64. I based it off the fact that Rozy’s worn an ‘A’ in the past. I believe the last time it was just last season, when Callahan was out. Or maybe it was when Drury was out. In any case, Rozy had it last year, I’m sure of that.

Gift of GAB, wrong pronoun there for me. I’m a she, not he. :)

  65. Exactly…Sam is a Rangers! You cannot substitute that with anything! I cannot stand Doc… i call him Doc “perpetual orgasm” Emerick

  66. to me Doc and Chico sound like a couple of whiny old women …esp Chico constantly professing his love on air for Marty

  67. @ORR ..rofl at your staal comment …u r a riot my friend!

@rod agree 100% give the A to Dubi…give him that responsibility. Kid has played real hard since he has been here. Not sure why so many have issue with him.

  68. wait a sec…cant remember if cally already wearing the ‘A’ …lol…goes to show how much that means to us fans…i will shut up and head back to poker tables..good night all!
