Good evening!
first?
Dang you ilb!
I didn’t read all the players’ bets, but I am betting against those team odds. LGR!
I’m sure GregL will be all over this one…
Sorry, mama…He carped you too.
Anybody want to take the over with Prospal?
If I only had some extra money and a bookie.
But + Shitinkov = Poop Loop Duo!
St Petersberg! My new favorite team!
lol Carp, poor Fankist!
LMAO @ Pavel Kubina for Norris
For the Hart, I’m taking ‘any other forward’. He had an off year last season, and I’m expecting him to bounce back!
Really old, but I just saw the video of Boo doing a cup check on Chris Neil
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHnyWlgjPjw
lol
um, other teams’ odds, and ours, for winning or not. 40-1 my assen!
sorry if this was mentioned earlier, but Jed Ortmeyers short lived Islander career is over.
New bet: over/under on who gets Carp’d the most this season. So far, I’m in it to win it.
cry me an ortmeyer….
Duker- it hurts me just watching it…Btw, big shot Carkner did not necessarily jump in and dropped his gloves to defend his teammate. I think he was reluctant to take an instigator penalty. In preseason. Uh huh..
Just noticed Carkner avoided fighting him after that. Jeez, nobody wants to fight Booger.
Forgot to turn Ukrainian…
Carp- I don’t know how official any of these rankings really are.
Too bad for Ortmeyer. I would have hated to see him with the Isles though. I hope he gets his shot somewhere else. He’s a pretty solid 4th liner. Definitely my favorite Ranger from the 05-07 years.
Ha, remember when Jason Ward, and Betts was on our 3rd line, along with Steve Rucchin centering the second line with Ruchinsky I think? And it seemed like we had less problems at that time. We have a better team, and we have more problems!
TA!
when i was in vegas a couple weeks ago, the pens were 9/2 favorite for the Cup. i think we were 20something…maybe as high as 50.
Creating lines is not my thing, but I’d like to see what you ‘line-savy’ boneheads predict will be the opening day line combinations now that we’re down to 25 with Fedotenko signed.
Carp, will you be attending any practices this week to give us some inside info?
Heave, yes. Not sure when. Possible tomorrow, probable Thursday.
Carp, when is the Sam Rosen interview ?
The lines will be…
Frolov – Step-On – Gaborik
Dublowsky – Anisimov – Callahands
Avery – Pee Wee Herman – Fedetenko
Prust – Betts – Zucchini-Asian
Staal – Girardi
Del Z – Guiltroy
Sauer – Blowzival
Lungfist
Vallycat
This is the Cup winning Rangers!
Screw the Rangers ,46 years ago today I saw Mickey mantle hit one in the upper deck off of barney Schultz of the cards in the 64 world series , it was the Micks last home run, The Mick swung and there was no doubt.
>>...but Jed Ortmeyers short lived Islander career is over.
So short that I didn’t even know about it.
>>Carp, when is the Sam Rosen interview ?
When he retires.
So, I walked in the office building this morning and the security guard greets with with, “It’s Go Time, BABY!” Funny thing is, I’ve never spoken to the lad before; he doesn’t know I’m a hockey and Rangers fan. Yeah, that was my first smile of the day.
Tony, Carp answered it at the end of the last thread: they’re exchanging via e-mail and he’s just waiting to get the answers.
Hint: The answer to my question from the last thread is Vic Lynn.
They should sign Orty to play for the Whale if he would take such an offer. I loved him.
Ortmeyer will land somewhere, he’s the type of player that a lot of teams can use.
Over/unders and betting make my brain hurt. The only type of betting I like is one with the ponies and that’s only once a year at ‘Toga.
wicky, I’m in west county, not the actual city. Kinda nice out here, reminds me of back home a little bit, except the leaves haven’t changed yet!
ESPN Insider – EJ Hradek
Stepan could do some nice things on 7th Avenue this year.
If you follow me on Twitter—you should—you know that I braved a little rainy weather to check out the Ottawa Senators vs. New York Rangers exhibition tilt at Madison Square Garden on Friday night. As it turned out, it was a good idea. The two Eastern Conference foes played a pretty entertaining game. The Rangers won 5-4 in a shootout.
Making the trip gave me another chance to see Rangers rookie center Derek Stepan. I’d seen him against the Detroit Red Wings at MSG two days earlier. On both nights, Stepan impressed. I’d really liked what I saw from him as Team USA’s captain during last winter’s World Junior Championship tournament. Stepan led his fellow Americans to gold, clinching with an OT victory over Canada.
After completing his sophomore season at Wisconsin, Stepan decided to turn pro, signing with the Rangers, who’d selected him in the second round of the 2008 draft. (In the first round, they grabbed budding star D Michael Del Zotto.)
In five preseason games, Stepan has tallied three goals (including a nice short-handed effort against the Sens) and two assists for five points. Clearly, he knows what to do with the puck. Without it, however, there are still some lessons to be learned—he was a minus-4 during the preseason. In time, I expect Stepan will figure it out. He’s a smart kid with a great disposition.
With injuries to Fs Chris Drury (broken left index finger) and Vinny Prospal (knee), Stepan will start the season in New York. Can he stay for the entire season? We’ll see. In the bigger picture, I figure he’ll be an important piece of the franchise’s future.
Watching Stepan got me thinking about some other newcomers around the league. For today’s Monday 10, I offer 10 other fresh faces who opened a few eyes during the preseason. (I’ve listed them in alphabetical order, not in order of importance.)
Rest of ESPN Insider re: other players
Matthew Bartkowski, D, Boston Bruins
In the spring, the Bruins acquired Bartkowski’s rights from the Florida Panthers, who drafted him in the seventh round of the 2008 draft. Then, they signed the former Ohio State standout when he opted to leave school after two years. The 22-year-old Pittsburgh native put up four assists and a plus-3 rating in his first four exhibition games. He’s still battling for a roster spot.
Jonathan Bernier, G, Los Angeles Kings
After a huge season in the AHL, the 22-year-old stopper came to camp looking for a full-time spot in L.A. He hasn’t disappointed, going 1-0-1 in three appearances, stopping 59 of 64 shots. Eventually, I think he’ll unseat fellow young goalie Jonathan Quick as the Kings’ No. 1 netminder. For now, he’ll work behind Quick.
Sergei Bobrovsky, G, Philadelphia Flyers
With Michael Leighton sidelined for a couple of more weeks due to a bad back, the undrafted Russian will start the season in Philadelphia. The Flyers signed the 22-year-old last spring after liking what they saw from him in the KHL. Bobrovsky had an excellent camp, going 3-0-1 in five appearances, stopping 96 of 102 shots. Is he the answer to the club’s long-term goaltending issues? That would put a nice big smile on Paul Holmgren’s face.
Getty ImagesT.J. Brodie might not be in Calgary all year, but he could make an impact for a potentially surprising Flames team.
T.J. Brodie, D, Calgary Flames
Calgary went a perfect 7-0 during the preseason and the kid D-man was among the reasons for that success. Flames head coach Brent Sutter told the Calgary Herald that Brodie is “an intelligent player with the skills to go with it.” Nice. The 20-year-old had four goals and a plus-2 rating in five preseason games. He might not make the final opening night roster, but he’s clearly in the club’s long-term plans.
Lars Eller, F, Montreal Canadiens
Acquired as a key piece of the deal that sent goaltending hero Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis, Eller was the 13th overall pick in the ‘07 draft. Demanding Montreal fans had to be impressed with his preseason performance. In five games, the 21-year-old Eller had a goal, four assists and a plus-3 rating.
Marcus Johansson, F, Washington Capitals
The 24th overall pick in the ‘09 draft, Johansson turns 20 on Wednesday. He’d love to celebrate his birthday on the Caps’ NHL roster. He’s done just about everything he could do to make that happen, totaling four assists and playing to a plus-5 rating in five games. In another organization, he’d be a lock. With the Capitals, I have to figure he’s going to spend a good part of the season in Hershey. That’s not so bad, though. The Caps love to promote from within.
Nick Leddy, D, Chicago Blackhawks
The Hawks acquired Leddy’s rights last spring from the Wild in the deal that sent Cam Barker to Minny. After only one year at the University of Minnesota, Leddy decided to turn pro, signing an entry-level deal with Chicago. The Hawks’ cap issues created an opportunity for the 19-year-old defender who was a first-round pick in ‘09. While Leddy hasn’t put up any points in five preseason games (minus-1), he hasn’t looked out of place on the blue line. Now that Brian Campbell has been sidelined for a few weeks with a knee injury, Leddy figures to be on the opening night roster.
Robin Lehner, G, Senators
The 19-year-old goalie will start the season with the club’s AHL affiliate in Binghamton; but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Swede get an opportunity in Ottawa at some point during the season. I haven’t been too impressed by either Pascal Leclaire or Brian Elliott. If one of them stumbles, the Sens could call on Lehner. In two preseason appearances, he impressed, stopping 47 of 49 shots.
Mark Letestu, F, Pittsburgh Penguins
The undrafted 25-year-old Alberta native has battled his way through the minors to earn a legit shot at making the Penguins’ opening night roster. In five preseason games, Letestu had a goal and five assists as well as a plus-2 rating. He worked in 10 regular-season and four playoff games last season for the Pens. A versatile forward, Letestu could be a valuable role player for Dan Byslma.
Jeremy Morin, F, Blackhawks
Like Leddy, Morin is taking advantage of the cap-created opportunity in Chicago. The 19-year-old winger has opened some eyes, putting up four points in six preseason games. Originally a second-round pick of the Thrashers, Morin came to the Hawks as part of the multiplayer trade that sent Dustin Byfuglien to Atlanta. He’s coming off a sensational junior season in Kitchener (OHL), where he scored 47 goals in 58 games. Morin netted another 12 markers in 20 playoff tilts.
ESPN Insider on MZA
The New York Rangers are starting Mats Zuccarrello in the minors for now. But he’s impressed AHL coach Kenny Gernander enough that, when the Rangers asked for the top two guys at camp so they could play them in the last preseason game, Zuccarrello was among the pair. Coach John Tortorella New York Daily News, “We’re always trying to evaluate our people, so Kenny felt those were the two best forwards and they deserve another exhibition game here because we left some people back and it gives us a chance to evaluate.”
While there are still a lot of moving parts on the Rangers’ front line, Zuccarrello is quickly adjusting to the American game. (He came over from Norway this summer.) So, as Rangers blogger Adam Rotter writes, “I don’t think Zuccarello will be down for a long time, as long as he plays well in Hartford.” Alvin Chang
Bonjour. Au Revoir.
Now Watching: “MSG Countdown – Rangers Fights, Brawls & Melees.”
Yikes, it hurts just watching that stuff.
Watching espn 30 in 30 about Terry fox. 21 year old kid who tried running across Canada on one leg in 1980 to raise money for cancer. Just got to the part where he stops because cancer came back in his lungs. Doesn’t look good for him. Tough kid.
2 to 1 – Odds that pizza boy burns his hands in the oven & needs another week on IR
3:1 – that he drops is mouthpiece in the dough when making a pie ala kramer dropping his gum in bagel dough at festivus
Did anybody watch the Steinbrenner 30 in 30? The reason I ask is two people told me they saw me directly in the picture, front and center, at a Hal Steinbrenner press conference … and I don’t ever remember being at a Hal Steinbrenner press conference. So, just wonderin’.
Good night boys and girls.
Good night, Sally!
Uh oh, Carp! Age is catching up to you! I didn’t know short term memory loss starts at age 26 :P
I’ll take the over on Frolov!

When you speak of favorite players, one of my favorite Rangers always to be recalled by me with affection, would be Matthew Barnaby. No he didn’t accomplish great scoring feats, but by gar he always came to win.
And he backed down from NO ONE. That ugly season either just before or just after the lockout, my memory blurs, was a gathering of contemptible players. there was the human butterfly, Anson Carter, who avoided handling pucks as though they carried an infectious disease, and Tom Poti the “bystander” who stood around with a supercilious grin on his face and whenever a puck came to him he just got rid of it. When anyone approached him in a scoring mode he poked or avoided body contact, and went thru the motions
of supposedly playing defense, but he never seemed to get in anyone’s way. And then there was Barnaby. Knees pumping all the time on ice, eternally trying to rally his moribund team mates, here there everywhere on ice…but in a hopeless cause, because he was….alone. I see him now and then with the talking heads, and he does just as good a job there as he did on ice. You want a future coach? You could do worse.
carp, when i was in high school back in the late 90’s i saw u on tv once too. mayeb a ranger game or something. idk. but the day you took over the blog i recognized u immediately. u did cover the rangers back in teh late 90’s right? cuz i didnt watch much sports besides hockey and baseball.
Good morning, boneheads!
Mornin’, Mikey!
Fran, I remember when Barnaby fought Peter Worrell, who was at least 6-5 and 240lbs. Mat laid his glove down on the ice just to make sure that Worrell doesn’t think he would back off. And I admit, I didn’t think he would be able to be such a good commentator he is now. Coach- perhaps.

new post.
Back some years ago ( no ilb2001, not prehistoric…heh heh, vengeance is sweet…) a smallish forward named Danny Lewicki played for them and he was a very good scorer…but memory dims, and I don’t know what ever became of him….no one checked numbers back then because they were often interchangeable, and if a guy got sent down and another guy took his number, if he got called back it would sometimes bewith a different number..not always, of course.
I had heard from some people that he was a Uke…..possible?
