It was 32 years ago today (OMG, 32?!) that Bucky F. Dent homered into the net (before there were seats there) above the Monster. Quick story. Back then (pre-internet) the Boston Globe had an evening edition. It was printed during the top of the seventh inning. The headline on the front of the whole paper was “Red Sox Ahead” and there was a sub-headline that told of Yaz’s earlier homer, and there was a linescore that showed the Sox up 2-0 in the seventh. That edition actually hit the streets and I have a copy of it. It is a classic.

Well, I watched online last night since Dish doesn’t have MSG. Not too great. Tonight it’s a lot better. Trying a different computer and it’s pretty smooth. The MSG feed was one but then it went off and switched to the Sens feed. Better than nothing I guess. The only other problem is no dvr so I only get to see up until the end of the 2nd since I play hockey on Saturday nights. Oh well. I wish I could have like a 10 channel package and just pay for those channels instead of all the other crap!

Was at the game last night. It was the first time I really paid attention to preseason play. I noticed some things about certain players and I thought I would share them here:
Steve Eminger: I think he basically played himself off the team last night. With the exception of the last 19 minutes of the third period (after Ottawa scored their second goal, for which he was definitely partly to blame), he was absolutely dreadful. During the rest of the third period, I thought he actually played a really strong game and even picked up an assist, but it was too little, too late in my opinion. Unless both Sauer and Valentenko both Carcillo the bed tonight, I have to think Eminger is getting cut.
Derek Stepan: I thought the kid looked great. Sure, he had some defensive lapses, especially in terms of two-way play and tracking back (there was definitely one goal where he was kind of lagging behind the play and should have been covering the third man in), but the kid has boat loads of talent and skates hard.
Erik Christensen: I thought he had a pretty nondescript game. Great shootout goal. But I think because he has a better two-way game, they leave him on the top line instead of Stepan.
Brandon Dubinsky: Dreadful. Honestly, they should give EC a look on the wing in Dubinsky’s place and sit Dubinsky for a while. Lazy, listless, careless with the puck. Just terrible.
Sean Avery: Pretty good game for him. I think he’s finally in a role that suits him best: 3rd line winger.
Marc Staal: Hot and cold defensively, but man, that was best goal of his career.
Brian Boyle: Where was this guy last season? Skated hard, took the body, dove to break up plays on the PK, and since when can he shoot?
Derek Boogaard: I think it’s funny that his weight has been discussed openly because after seeing him for the first time during the preseason, all I could think of is how fat he looked. I really like the look of our 4th line.
MDZ: Thought he played well, but still getting caught a little too deep.
Matt Gilroy: Good skating, good puck carrying skills, but just makes bad decisions in the offensive zone. It really limits his value because what is the point of him carrying the puck up ice if he’s just going to turn it over once he gains the zone. That’s what Scott Gomez used to do.
Ruslan Fedotenko: Boy, the Rangers are going to have a really tough decision on their hands with him. I thought he played great.
Alexander Frolov: Thought he was kind of invisible actually. Disappointed. I think he may end up being the second coming of Zherdev, not that there’s anything wrong with that (for one year).
Further to what I was saying about Gilroy making bad decisions in the offensive zone, that Ottawa shorthanded goal tonight was a direct result of his poor choice to take that sharp angle shot instead of hold the puck and carry it around the net.
I’m not one to compare athletes of different sports, but gee, how more refreshing is it to listen to hockey players speak than those basketball and American football ones?
Frolov and Zherdev are nothing alike, and Torts has told the Rangers to shoot from bad angles if they have no other play. I agree that Gilroy’s shot did lead to the Sens goal.

This is the type of game we’re going to play all season, instead of playing a go-go-go game that we dont score with we’re gonna give up more goals. Especially with Staal out of the lineup and Biron in. We have guys in even this lineup that can put the puck away, and if Lundqvist starts playing to mid-season form then we can almost count on being an elite team. Consistency has ALWAYS been the issue. We have started the season well for the last few years. Consistency.

They don’t need to eliminate White’s salary out of the gate because Prospal and possibly Drury start the season on IR.

I think they keep him until Drury returns. He might not play, but they won;t send him to Hartford because they would have to expose him to re-entry waivers to recall him if he was needed.

Biron has just been hung out to dry on 4 of the goals. He’s not a superstar, we all know that. But he hasn’t let in the easy ones either, which is more than can be said about either DosNueve or Valli.
In other words, give him 6 legit NHL defensemen instead of 1 offensive defenseman and 5 fringe defensemen and he might be able to keep the goal total to 3 or less.

They’re kids, and I’d rather see them make mistakes in the pre-season, the regular season, and/or the post-season rather than suffer through watching Wade Redden coast through another game. Contract aside, the man had either no passion for the game or could no longer compete and it was obvious. If this team is going to go anywhere, jettisoning Redden was the right move.

Getting rid of Redden was 100% the right move. There’s not even a quarter of a percentage that the move was wrong. We have a nice mix of veterans and young guys. Redden doesnt fit anywhere.

Here’s what I was impressed with the Rangers tonight…they were great opportunists, and they never gave up, even though I feel that they tired noticeably in that last period.
I’ll admit that I wasn’t too crazy about the way that Biron reacted to some of those shots on goal, but…by and large they probably left a bit of angst in the minds of the Senators as they realized that these were the Ranger;s kids, and NOT their first team. THere is indeed life among the Dubinsky clan, and he’s apparently it…I won’t go so far as to say I was overwhelmed, but at least there will be no reason to have a mirror held to his nostrils.
That guy named White that so many folks are ready to dump…what’s the guys fault?..he played a fine game, and carried the coals when they needed him.. I get the impression among a certain group of Bonesters, that they are overly quick to throw some of these guys under the bus, on scant evidence.
After all, if you don;t like these people..who ya gonna call? Maroone? What did Booger do spear the guy? How gauche.
But no matter…I have great fear of Buffalo..really.They are a guuuuuud team.

Boogaard gelding Neil was the highlight of the night. Neil has taken numerous liberties with the pansy Rangers the last few years. Nice to see him get circumcised.
I think the trade that we will see is Rozsival and Dubinsky for Cogliano and Souray. Dubinsky had a garbage preseason and has been invisible. Dubinsky may want to go to Edmonton because it is closer to Alaska. Sather for some reason loves Cogliano and Souray. Rozsival would fit in with the numerous Czech players they have on the team. I don’t have a problem doing that deal.
if that is the trade we see, then we will be seeing a real bad trade.

Todd White will & should be cut. Both of his goals were gift-wrapped for him tonite. Even Boogeyman would have scored those goals.

From what I hear, Blowzy is a good comforter, so he’s a guy they need to send to Hartford.
We iced a n00b squad tonight but I think we will get Souray regardless as I am getting the sense that 1) Sather has a thing for him 2) Tortorella isn’t so high on the defense candidates as we think and 3) Sather loves to mine the scratch-and-dent pile especially if it involves Edmonton.
I was never a big fan of Dubinsky and I don’t think the holdout he pulled last year in camp earned him any respect.

Because what else are you honestly going to get for Rozsival? You take a chance on a guy who has an equally bad contract that a change of scenery will benefit player and team.
Callahan had an average preseason and so did Lundqvist who looked pretty bad last game
MDZ and Gilroy also kind of stunk in preseason…so now we have to trade them just based on the preseason play?

CCCP, You really thought Cally was average? I thought he played pretty good. He was physical, he was blocking shots, and pretty solid defensively.
Dublowsky really stunk it up out of all of them. He’s supposed to be our key guy. I’m willing to think of it as him saving himself. I’m hoping that’s the case.

Change of scenery only worked for Jagr…don’t remember anybody else who came here and changed the scenery of the club the way Jagr did (not counting certain legends and certain historical moments)

I’d pick Souray up off waivers if he was replacing Blowzy. The both suck defensively, but at least with him he has a cannon of a shot that he will use. And he’s injury prone, so if he sucks, then who cares, he’ll just get injured! Bwaha.
And you know how close he was to being a Ranger last season, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he gets picked up.

Souray trade is dead, folks. He is on waivers. Once he clears, he would have to be exposed before the trade by Oilers (and someone would definitely snatch him for half price.) If he is traded while on AHL roster, the Rangers would have to expose him to reentry before bringing him up. they would end up paying half of his salary without ever seeing him.

HOLY HANNAH! The wind turns on a dime here…making determinations on players on a shift by shift basis on a preseason game no less!! Let this team marinate a bit…get some chemistry going…especially the D where its much tougher…we will look bad some nights as a factor of youth, but its preferable to looking bad with no upside…the Redden comment was possibly the silliest comment of the preseason…do you want to bring him up?
