It’s Go Time!

Before we do “go” though, I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind any Boneheads who double as Yankees fans, Happy Anniversary.

It was 32 years ago today (OMG, 32?!) that Bucky F. Dent homered into the net (before there were seats there) above the Monster. Quick story. Back then (pre-internet) the Boston Globe had an evening edition. It was printed during the top of the seventh inning. The headline on the front of the whole paper was “Red Sox Ahead” and there was a sub-headline that told of Yaz’s earlier homer, and there was a linescore that showed the Sox up 2-0 in the seventh. That edition actually hit the streets and I have a copy of it. It is a classic.

——————————-

OK, back to hockey. In order to rest Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan, the Rangers had to un-cut (or recall) Dale Weise and Mats Zuccarello. So tonight’s lineup, gleaned from the blog of Jesse Spector (the only NY newspaper reporter in Kanata, Ont. tonight):

Kennedy-White-Fedotenko
Dubinsky-Anisimov-Weise
Christensen-Stepan-Zuccarello
Boogaard-Boyle-Prust
McDonagh-Eminger
Valentenko-Gilroy
Del Zotto-Sauer
Biron

This is the preseason finale for the 4-1 Rangers, who might make cuts tomorrow.

  1. mako …

are we still having the Boneheads Fantasy Draft tonight at 8:45 ??? there’s an odd amount of teams in the league and it wont let us draft if it stays like that

  2. lol Carpy, Izzy and CCCP toy with the rest of us during the preseason! CONGRATS N. Country!

ORR, sooooooo close to the actual new post post!

  3. Evening all!

Last pre-season game and the season is still a week away, so let’s make it a good one.

  4. Izzy Mandlebaum on

The Yanks are slipping- no happy ending? (Sounds like a porn film title, doesn’t it?)

  5. put off until tomorrow, got a late start on a lot of things today, so tomorrow is baking and then making the apartment spiffy for the future mom in law & step dad in law visit on wednesday. But the snickers enhanced brownies are cooling, someone’s looking forward to his brownie sundaes!

Izzy – Better be in form for the season. Every game thread that you or CCCP get first, the Rangers WILL WIN! You can lead us to a Cup!

Brownie Sundaes, ooooooooooooooooooooooo, I’ll be over in 10 minutes Linzo! ;-)

  8. somerset

I’ve been trying like hell to get someone else to join. I just may have to delete my team or my fathers.

  9. mako, do you really need another? i have no idea what to do, especially if you guys are drafting tonight

  10. lmao tomb, if he scores again tonight, I’ll hear greg’s scream all the way here in bama

  12. Mako … are u gonna resched the draft??

Was that Boyle with an “A” on his sweater ??

  13. now that you brought that up Calad, i’m noticing these sens visor guys are apt to start shenanigans

  14. mako …

u should at least push the time back a bit.

this happened in the league i was managing. If you dont have an even amount of teams an HOUR ahead of time it will switch to AUTODRAFT – unless you push back the draft time

  15. Ok all set. I just added another team on my cousins email account. We’re all set :)

Mickey – They’re all mine! ALL MINE! “No soup brownies for you! ;)

you’re gonna have a blast drafting tonight !! ha

  18. CR9 - CristianZoTenko Ronaldagr on

Oh no, if you delete a Linda, does the Linda then become a figment of our imagination?

  19. Well, I watched online last night since Dish doesn’t have MSG. Not too great. Tonight it’s a lot better. Trying a different computer and it’s pretty smooth. The MSG feed was one but then it went off and switched to the Sens feed. Better than nothing I guess. The only other problem is no dvr so I only get to see up until the end of the 2nd since I play hockey on Saturday nights. Oh well. I wish I could have like a 10 channel package and just pay for those channels instead of all the other crap!

  20. Comon people, there was 1 reason Boogard was in the lineup tonight…For payback. I just wish it was worse than a spear. I hope Neil is hurt.

  21. felino better get a long penalty for that garbage oh wait those things only happen to the rangers

  22. bull dog line on

jsut an observation, but do you notice who is wearing the A tonight? the player who a lot people had not making the team. that would be Brian Boyle.

  23. Doodie Machetto on

    Carped from much earlier today:

Was at the game last night. It was the first time I really paid attention to preseason play. I noticed some things about certain players and I thought I would share them here:

Steve Eminger: I think he basically played himself off the team last night. With the exception of the last 19 minutes of the third period (after Ottawa scored their second goal, for which he was definitely partly to blame), he was absolutely dreadful. During the rest of the third period, I thought he actually played a really strong game and even picked up an assist, but it was too little, too late in my opinion. Unless both Sauer and Valentenko both Carcillo the bed tonight, I have to think Eminger is getting cut.

Derek Stepan: I thought the kid looked great. Sure, he had some defensive lapses, especially in terms of two-way play and tracking back (there was definitely one goal where he was kind of lagging behind the play and should have been covering the third man in), but the kid has boat loads of talent and skates hard.

Erik Christensen: I thought he had a pretty nondescript game. Great shootout goal. But I think because he has a better two-way game, they leave him on the top line instead of Stepan.

Brandon Dubinsky: Dreadful. Honestly, they should give EC a look on the wing in Dubinsky’s place and sit Dubinsky for a while. Lazy, listless, careless with the puck. Just terrible.

Sean Avery: Pretty good game for him. I think he’s finally in a role that suits him best: 3rd line winger.

Marc Staal: Hot and cold defensively, but man, that was best goal of his career.

Brian Boyle: Where was this guy last season? Skated hard, took the body, dove to break up plays on the PK, and since when can he shoot?

Derek Boogaard: I think it’s funny that his weight has been discussed openly because after seeing him for the first time during the preseason, all I could think of is how fat he looked. I really like the look of our 4th line.

MDZ: Thought he played well, but still getting caught a little too deep.

Matt Gilroy: Good skating, good puck carrying skills, but just makes bad decisions in the offensive zone. It really limits his value because what is the point of him carrying the puck up ice if he’s just going to turn it over once he gains the zone. That’s what Scott Gomez used to do.

Ruslan Fedotenko: Boy, the Rangers are going to have a really tough decision on their hands with him. I thought he played great.

Alexander Frolov: Thought he was kind of invisible actually. Disappointed. I think he may end up being the second coming of Zherdev, not that there’s anything wrong with that (for one year).

  24. Doodie Machetto on

Further to what I was saying about Gilroy making bad decisions in the offensive zone, that Ottawa shorthanded goal tonight was a direct result of his poor choice to take that sharp angle shot instead of hold the puck and carry it around the net.

  25. I’m not one to compare athletes of different sports, but gee, how more refreshing is it to listen to hockey players speak than those basketball and American football ones?

  26. bull dog line on

Frolov and Zherdev are nothing alike, and Torts has told the Rangers to shoot from bad angles if they have no other play. I agree that Gilroy’s shot did lead to the Sens goal.

  27. Mako both games that Biron has been in hasnt been the A team on defense no excuse but a glimmer of hope for him maybe

  28. i missed whatever happened earlier with neil, can someone bring me up to speed please?

  29. deja

I know. I really want him to do well with the team. I was hoping that he came to the Rangers 2 years ago. I want him to be the best back up for LQ. We’ll see. But he really looks shaky.

  30. Shaky is when the goalie has some trouble with bad bounces and hanging onto the puck. This is worse than shaky! LOL!

  31. Tank The Season on

I have a good friend who is an Islander fan, he was NOT enthused about Biron last season.

  32. WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIRON!!!!!!!!!!!

Do we FINALLY have a goalie who can handle the puck!??!??!

  33. Tank The Season on

Yes, Kovalev is the last active member of the 94 team still playing in the NHL. Zubov was the other one till he went to the KHL.

Stepan IS gonna be our Jonathan Toews.

  34. Wow. That pass makes up for a little. But, holy cow there’s no way Stepan doesn’t make the team!

  35. 4generations 4 cups on

I actually screamed in celebration for that goal holy carp that was just absolutely perfect. Wow.

  36. Tank The Season on

Stepan is easily the most talented center on this team. He can pass AND has an amazing shot. He will be a 80 point player 35G 45A or more in due time.

  37. Doodie Machetto on

The kid has upside, no doubt. But it’s just the preseason. Let’s hold off the awarding of the Art Ross trophy until he plays a few games that matter.

  38. Not bad for the Rangers B team against almost all of the Ottawa regulars

so far this pre-season the Rangers are showing a lot of character and ability to score goals and comeback in games. Now if Hank could manage a full season we could be in for a treat

  39. Olga Folkyerself on

Being able to comeback is good, but I’d rather see them get a lead and hold onto it.

  40. Seems like a couple guys are trying to make last minute statements here. I hate them for making me excited about this season.

  41. oh jeeze i hope todd white doesnt make the team cause of this if it means someone younger losing out

  42. Doodie Machetto on

They’ll keep White around as long as Drury and Prospal are out.

Is anyone else concerned with how poor the team’s defensive play has been?

  43. Doodie – i was just talking to my friend about that how i dont think secondary scoring is going to be a problem just will it be enough to compensate for our complete lack of defensive play.

  44. 4generations 4 cups on

This is the type of game we’re going to play all season, instead of playing a go-go-go game that we dont score with we’re gonna give up more goals. Especially with Staal out of the lineup and Biron in. We have guys in even this lineup that can put the puck away, and if Lundqvist starts playing to mid-season form then we can almost count on being an elite team. Consistency has ALWAYS been the issue. We have started the season well for the last few years. Consistency.

  45. Doodie Machetto on

No sound where I’m at; what did they say about #6?

PS, I’ll be the first to get a head start on tomorrow:

    #6: Wade Redden.

  46. Tank The Season on

White will be waived based on his salary.

Stepan and Fedotenko make the team.

I have a feeling we will claim a defenseman off waivers or trade for one.

  47. Doodie Machetto on

They don’t need to eliminate White’s salary out of the gate because Prospal and possibly Drury start the season on IR.

Not to mention having dumped Redden’s salary, they are way under the cap, even with White.

I think they keep him until Drury returns. He might not play, but they won;t send him to Hartford because they would have to expose him to re-entry waivers to recall him if he was needed.

  48. they were crying about how unfair it is for Redden that he has to go to Hartford and he can’t come back up because of the cap hit. Boo-firetruckin’-hoo.

  49. Olga Folkyerself on

Doodie- Goring thinks its unfair that Redden was sent down because his agent got him such a good contract. He didn’t say anything about earning it though…

Didn’t mention how Sather was so stupid to sign him for six years either.

  50. Biron is making Hank look even better. Anytime there is a descent scoring chance he lets one in. The Senators goalie makes Hank look like god though.

  51. 4generations 4 cups on

I thought it was pretty funny, grown men talking about ‘FAIR.’ I’m pretty sure a lot of us who have been around the block know that life, itself, is not fair.

  52. Doodie Machetto on

    Thanks Carp. I agree, Boo-Byfuglien-Hoo.

I think I saw Nasty 1 at the game last night, but he was walking past and for me to get up required me to move either a guy with an oxygen tank or two really fat guys.

  53. Doodie Machetto on

See, that’s why Goring is a know-nothing windbag. He still has a contract that pays him 6.5 million a season to play hockey in the New York Rangers organization. If Redden didn’t want to get sent to Hartford, he could have:

    a) played like he gave a damn; or
    b) traded a couple of million in his contract for a no movement clause.

You sign a deal and you abide by its terms. I thought since he was going to do Islanders color commentary we wouldn’t have to be subjected to his idiocy any longer.

  54. Doodie Machetto on

Oh, I did on more than one occassion, but to chase a guy that may or may not have been Nasty 1, I let him be.

  55. Doodie Machetto on

Remember how I said that unless Valentenko or Sauer carcillo the bed that Eminger wouldn’t make the team?

Both have really Carcilloed the bed tonight, especially Valentenko.

Too bad for Eminger, he hasn’t done anything worth a damn either.

  56. lol Doodie great post about Goring. I tried to stick a comment about being a useless Islanders color commentary guy in there but just couldn’t word it right

  57. Doodie Machetto on

Spearing major. He gave someone (forgot who) a nut shot from behind with the stick.

Terrible coverage on the back door on the PP by the winger. Tonight it was Fedotenko. Last night it was Dubinsky.

  58. 4generations 4 cups on

Chris Neil is the one who got speared, lol. I think its funny that he could have been (and should be, because i like his game) a Ranger.

  59. Doodie Machetto on

James, Sauer didn’t do anything wrong there. MDZ and Fedotenko failed to pick up the back door play.

If anything, Valentenko did because he was the reason they were on the PK in the first place.

  60. U Otto Folkyerself on

Doodie just step on his oxygen tube for about 30 seconds. He’ll fall right out of the way…

  61. btw- THIS is the goalie that’s supposed to help lighten Lundqvist’s work load? Something tells me Lundqvist is in for another busy season.

  62. Doodie- I missed the play. thought it was Sauer. All I know is that a few of these guys needs to be smarter in their own zone or else we wont be any better on D than last season.

  63. Doodie Machetto on

Biron has just been hung out to dry on 4 of the goals. He’s not a superstar, we all know that. But he hasn’t let in the easy ones either, which is more than can be said about either DosNueve or Valli.

In other words, give him 6 legit NHL defensemen instead of 1 offensive defenseman and 5 fringe defensemen and he might be able to keep the goal total to 3 or less.

  64. Doodie Machetto on

Otto, ha. He sits behind me unfortunately. I’m in one of those little walled areas at the base of the 300s. He is behind me at the end of the wall.

I thought that Islanders playing two games comment was just a joke about how bad the Rangers were defensively! That’s weird that they are doing that.

  65. Doodie Machetto on

Orr, I think they’re both going to Mount Doom.

Although, I have to say, I really like what Kennedy brings to the table. He’s like a better Sjostrom. If we didn’t have Prust, I’d love him on the 4th line, but, in Prust we trust.

  66. For the games where we need more skill and less Boogey in the lineup I think they should go Kennedy-Boyle-Prust.

  67. Olga Folkyerself on

If all these guys are playing well, then Sather will send down the ones who don’t need to pass thru waivers.

    It’s the Sather Way.

  68. Doodie Machetto on

If he goes on waivers, no big loss. As I said, a decent fourth liner. Plenty of those already in the system.

As for Biron, yet again no hope on that great deflection.

  69. CR9 - CristianZoTenko Ronaldagr on

So with a goal by Aasen and all the injuries, is it possible he’s sees the opening 23 man roster?

    tr?

  70. Doodie Machetto on

Well, with how bad McDonagh, Sauer, and especially Valentenko were tonight, Wade Redden’s spot is totally up for grabs between those three and Eminger.

Sad to say, but Redden is better than all of those guys if they play like they did tonight on a nightly basis.

So two probably stay for now because of Rozsi’s injury. I’d bet on Sauer and Eminger.

  71. Doodie Machetto on

tr, I assume you’re asking me about McDonagh.

He’s not NHL ready yet. I think with the choice between a year in the AHL or graduating college, graduating is the better choice.

    That’s why.

  72. And now that Redden has been sent down…”Redden is better than all of those guys if they play like they did tonight on a nightly basis.”

REALLY?…did you actually think that out before you typed it?

  73. orr

you can tell emotion based on text?
but you cant say why he was cut…

    interesting to say the least.

  74. Yes
Neil was taught a lesson in this game
We have a team where it will be tough to decide on a lineup
And Redden will not be in the mix
The only black eye I saw in the preseason was Rossy
    Should be an interesting week

  75. Doodie Machetto on

Dude, I did think it out. Redden’s contract was terrible but he was definitely better than the defense being played tonight.

Hell, even Rozsival would be an all-star compared to what was going on tonight.

  76. i think he was sent down to get used to the NHL style of play and the smaller rink. He has skills, and I am sure we’ll see him up before the end of this calendar year.

  77. Yup, TR. When it comes to you, and a few others, I can. You act like such a wittle baby. Your comments after his goal proved that. You’d think MZA was your bf, haha!

And why do I have to answer the obvious? He looked a step behind in the pre-season games, and the staff can see more than we can, since they watch these guys in camp all day long. He had a couple of flashes of “brilliance” but not enough to make the team. Leave it to the staff, cause they know what they’re doing. That’s why they’re there, and you are here.

Alright? You want more answers, go ask Carp to ask Torts.

  78. CR9 - CristianZoTenko Ronaldagr on

Guys, this is the preseason. It doesnt matter. Im sure our defense will be much better come Oct. 9.

I have no delusions; it wont be the best defense or a great defense, but it will be better than we’ve seen the last couple games.

  79. Ha, what? Don’t tell me you’re going to start complaining aboot that. Oh wait, lemme guess, are you going to pull a Salty Dupuis and say “you know nothing aboot hockey”. Because usually after he complains aboot my sense of humor, or things I like, he tosses that comment at me.

  80. Doodie,

They’re kids, and I’d rather see them make mistakes in the pre-season, the regular season, and/or the post-season rather than suffer through watching Wade Redden coast through another game. Contract aside, the man had either no passion for the game or could no longer compete and it was obvious. If this team is going to go anywhere, jettisoning Redden was the right move.

  81. Lol, yeah that’s baby language. I’m trying to stoop down to your level.

And I’ve heard the whole “I’m not reading your comments” BS so many times. But, they always seem to do.

Ha, All this because MZA couldn’t crack the lineup? Boo fuggin hoo.

  82. Olga Folkyerself on

tr- don’t argue with an idiot. He’ll drag you down to his level then beat you with experience.

  83. Maybe they got the ugly out tonight and we won’t see it the rest of the season? That would be very nice.

  84. CR9 - CristianZoTenko Ronaldagr on

Getting rid of Redden was 100% the right move. There’s not even a quarter of a percentage that the move was wrong. We have a nice mix of veterans and young guys. Redden doesnt fit anywhere.

  85. Doodie, the other option for “Poor Wade” was this: He could have refused his assignment and made himself an unrestricted free agent; then he could have stayed in the NHL for a lot less money. But there was no way he was giving up that kind of cash. so cry me a river.

  86. Hey folks

Not too shabby for a bunch of newbies striking for a spot, and up against what is probably Ottawa’s regular season
    lineup.

Here’s what I was impressed with the Rangers tonight…they were great opportunists, and they never gave up, even though I feel that they tired noticeably in that last period.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t too crazy about the way that Biron reacted to some of those shots on goal, but…by and large they probably left a bit of angst in the minds of the Senators as they realized that these were the Ranger;s kids, and NOT their first team. THere is indeed life among the Dubinsky clan, and he’s apparently it…I won’t go so far as to say I was overwhelmed, but at least there will be no reason to have a mirror held to his nostrils.

That guy named White that so many folks are ready to dump…what’s the guys fault?..he played a fine game, and carried the coals when they needed him.. I get the impression among a certain group of Bonesters, that they are overly quick to throw some of these guys under the bus, on scant evidence.

After all, if you don;t like these people..who ya gonna call? Maroone? What did Booger do spear the guy? How gauche.

But no matter…I have great fear of Buffalo..really.They are a guuuuuud team.

  87. CR9 - CristianZoTenko Ronaldagr on

if anyone wants a line to steal:

since Carpotenko used the “cry me a river”

*Cry me a river, then drown in it*

I believe I made that line up.

  88. i love u all. dont fight brothers and sisters, its just preseason game. we have slats at teh helm, im sure everything will be just fine!!! haha. hey at least we have todd white to take dru’s spot!!! and eminger to take mcdonaghs spot! is prospal done or what? stepan has to stay. hes scored in 3 straighht games and just looks so steady, of course makin a fw mistakes, but steady for a job on this team thats for sure

  89. CR9 - CristianZoTenko Ronaldagr on

Forget it. I didnt make it up. Just searched google, and there are FB groups with that name LOL

  90. leetchhalloffame on

Boogaard gelding Neil was the highlight of the night. Neil has taken numerous liberties with the pansy Rangers the last few years. Nice to see him get circumcised.

  91. Tank The Season on

I think the trade that we will see is Rozsival and Dubinsky for Cogliano and Souray. Dubinsky had a garbage preseason and has been invisible. Dubinsky may want to go to Edmonton because it is closer to Alaska. Sather for some reason loves Cogliano and Souray. Rozsival would fit in with the numerous Czech players they have on the team. I don’t have a problem doing that deal.

  92. Todd White will & should be cut. Both of his goals were gift-wrapped for him tonite. Even Boogeyman would have scored those goals.

  93. I agree aboot White-Man. We need more Vets to keep Dredden company. Remember when Slats sent Kaspar down? He had a fuggin nervous breakdown during the game and started crying!

From what I hear, Blowzy is a good comforter, so he’s a guy they need to send to Hartford.

  94. Tank The Season on

We iced a n00b squad tonight but I think we will get Souray regardless as I am getting the sense that 1) Sather has a thing for him 2) Tortorella isn’t so high on the defense candidates as we think and 3) Sather loves to mine the scratch-and-dent pile especially if it involves Edmonton.

I was never a big fan of Dubinsky and I don’t think the holdout he pulled last year in camp earned him any respect.

  95. Tank The Season

You getting the sense? How about a sense that what you say isn’t very smart?

why in the world would we take Souray when we just got rid of the same chump with equally bad contract?

  96. Tank The Season on

    Tank The Season

You getting the sense? How about a sense that what you say isn’t very smart?

why in the world would we take Souray when we just got rid of the same chump with equally bad contract?
    —————–

Because what else are you honestly going to get for Rozsival? You take a chance on a guy who has an equally bad contract that a change of scenery will benefit player and team.

  97. Callahan had an average preseason and so did Lundqvist who looked pretty bad last game

MDZ and Gilroy also kind of stunk in preseason…so now we have to trade them just based on the preseason play?

  98. change of scenery? hhhmmm where have i heard that before? OH YEAH…when Redden came here… and then Zherdev… let me think who else needed change of scenery… right, Sandis Ozolinch!

  99. Rarely works for NYR.

CCCP, You really thought Cally was average? I thought he played pretty good. He was physical, he was blocking shots, and pretty solid defensively.

Dublowsky really stunk it up out of all of them. He’s supposed to be our key guy. I’m willing to think of it as him saving himself. I’m hoping that’s the case.

  100. CR9 - CristianZoTenko Ronaldagr on

“It’s more like a change of Greenery.” lmao!!

If we bring on Souray for full price, or for half price via reentry waivers, Sather is dumber than I thought.

No need to add an injury prone has been to a team with a good mix of young talent and veterans.

  101. Change of scenery only worked for Jagr…don’t remember anybody else who came here and changed the scenery of the club the way Jagr did (not counting certain legends and certain historical moments)

    ORR

physical and blocking shots for Cally is what he does anyway…so its his average! lol

im looking for him to start scoring some goals!

  102. I’d pick Souray up off waivers if he was replacing Blowzy. The both suck defensively, but at least with him he has a cannon of a shot that he *will* use. And he’s injury prone, so if he sucks, then who cares, he’ll just get injured! Bwaha.

And you know how close he was to being a Ranger last season, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he gets picked up.

  103. Souray trade is dead, folks. He is on waivers. Once he clears, he would have to be exposed before the trade by Oilers (and someone would definitely snatch him for half price.) If he is traded while on AHL roster, the Rangers would have to expose him to reentry before bringing him up. they would end up paying half of his salary without ever seeing him.

  104. HOLY HANNAH! The wind turns on a dime here…making determinations on players on a shift by shift basis on a preseason game no less!! Let this team marinate a bit…get some chemistry going…especially the D where its much tougher…we will look bad some nights as a factor of youth, but its preferable to looking bad with no upside…the Redden comment was possibly the silliest comment of the preseason…do you want to bring him up? ROFL..
