Rangers 5, Red Wings 1 in review

Some thoughts:

1) I am really starting to like the “Tenkos”. Ruslan Fedotenko is very hard on the puck and away from it, has some skill, some creativity, is a strong skater. I still don’t know who he replaces if he makes the team, but I think he could be an upgrade to the second or third lines.

Here’s what he said about his chances to make the team:

“I don’t think at all. I am just playing. If they want to keep me, they keep me. Otherwise I will move on to the next stage of my life.”

And Pavel Valentenko, the rugged young defenseman, is sure opening eyes. I am thinking he will simply be a victim of the numbers unless there is a trade that involves either Michal Rozsival, Matt Gilroy or Michael Sauer.

2) Maybe I’m looking too deeply into John Tortorella’s quote (see last night’s post) about Artem Anisimov, but it seems to me they think that, at this stage, he’s not capable of handling first-line type duty.

3) Poor Derek Boogaard. How many chances did he get against Jimmy Howard, who was awful? There was a story about him in the Wall Street Journal yesterday, talking about his 222-game streak without a goal (since his rookie year), and how Todd White, who’s now also a Ranger, assisted on it. The thing that cracked me up was the repeated referrals to him as “Mr. Boogaard.” I think that’s what the Devils’ LeBlond must have been calling him in the home-and-home last week.

4) Why do I get this terrible feeling that Derek Stepan, having this fantastic camp, is going to find himself in Hartford while the Rangers go: Christensen/Prospal, Drury, Anisimov, Boyle down the middle?

————————————-

In case you missed it, I’m going to be doing a Q&A with Sam Rosen next week. If there’s anything in particular you think I should ask him, please let me know.

Here is my column in The Journal News and on LoHud.com today.

  1. Gift of GAB-orik on

The ‘Tenkos’ sure did look good last night. Boogaard is going to score. Some day. (i think?)

If Stepan doesn’t make the team, that’s a travesty, and injustice, and i’ll be pretty angry. Prospal is having knee issues, and he should play wing if anything. Stepan can play… and he should play.

  2. Gift of GAB-orik on

Carp… can you ask Sam Rosen how much of the praise he gives the players is spoon fed from MSG and the Rangers brass? Not like he’s actually answer that…. he’d be ducking that faster then Leblong was ducking Boogaard.

  3. Carp, i like the little tease at the end of the article.
“Maybe a trade is coming”. Is that E2 or E3?

You have to think if they decide not to have Sauer then they will try and get a draft pick back in return rather than expose him to waivers and lose him for nothing to Phoenix or Atlanta or the Isles.
Would anyone take Roszival right now? What do they do with Eminger? Risk waivers or keep him just because #7 d-man won’t stunt his development like it might to V-tank or McD?

  4. Some time with the “Whale” will not kill Stepan. It will also give them time to sort out where they think Anisimov belongs. If Anisimov shows he can handle 2nd line, that gives them some flexibility as to where they put Stepan. The players who are hurting Stepan the most are Drury and EC. Can’t move drury and EC has more experience. I think it would be good to have Stepan spend a year in the AHL getting used to a full season as opposed to his college hockey schedule. Mid-season burn out is common for college players.

  5. Carp,

Ask Rosen what is his target date for retirement… so I’ll know when I can stop muting the broadcasts.

His “game” has gone down the toilet since JD left.

Tell “Granny” that he should hang ’em up.

  6. dshea, I think the real shame is the kid’s earned a spot. and IMO he’s better than Christensen and Drury. With Christensen, his upside is what we saw last year. I think that’s Stepan’s downside.

  7. I think we need to temper the enthusiasm for these young guys. If you look at those goals it’s not hard to see that they will not be as easy to come by in the regular season when teams are playing with their full compliment. Gabby skated 20 feet in from the point before shooting that puck. And Sauer, a defensemen, found himself all alone in the center slot for an easy one. Do you really believe the Red Wings would ever allow that much ice to be available in the regular season? Not quite.

These are still young, inexperienced kids playing in a preseason where alot of established vets are playing not to get hurt. Temper your enthusiasm.

  8. To all the fans that want all young guys playing and no Fedotenko, I just remembered one key thing.

If we have a guy like Fedotenko and/or Prospal playing semi-decently, and if unfortunately the Rangers are out of it or trending downwards at the trade deadline, we can trade the veterans to Stanley Cup contending teams for draft picks or more young talent.

  9. I’m starting to want V-Tank on the team a lot more. I really like it when a guy sticks around and plays after getting his nose broken.

You’d never see a Basketball player do that. Virgina’s!!

I’m also having a bad feeling aboot Step-On. Ugh, EC shouldn’t be anywhere near Gabby!!

I like the lines at practice, because there’s no EC or WHITE!! No Kennedy either, but I do like him.

And it looks like Lisin isn’t good enough to make the Trashers. Wow, last year everyone was saying how he was going to be an awesome player, ha!! Another officially wasted 1st round pick [Korpedo]

  10. Shoot the puck Barry on

Gotta keep Stepan, and I would put him on the #1 line.

As far as Sam goes, I have to agree with slapshot that he has not been the same since JD left. Not a big fan of Joe M.– Dave Maloney should be doing color with Sam– it will perk Sam up.

Carp, ask Sam who is favorite obscure Ranger is from his years as play-by-play man. I’m talking the ilk of player which is frequently cited by this group in the countdowns (i.e., #28 as Mikko Leinonen)…

  11. CCCP – Here’s the reason. Sather already admitted one gross mistake in Redden, and buried $26 ?? million in the minors. Now, in Redden’s case, he really was a terrible nuisance.

He’s not going to bury another $15 ?? million in the minors, especially when Roszival is not a gross lack of talent like Redden.

It’s always difficult for people to admit mistakes. Sather has done that with Redden. It’s infinitely more difficult for people to admit multiple mistakes, especially when the mistakes are worth tens of millions of $$$$

  12. The Puck Drops Here on

Carp, ask Sam if he knows what the Rangers may be planning to celebrate the team’s 85th. And his funniest interview?

  13. Orr, Kovalev is not the worst fighter in hockey. Without a doubt that would have to go to Alex Semin for his bongo-action on Staal.

I agree with Barry – Dave Maloney should be doing the color with Sam. Get rid of that hack Micheletti!

  14. If Maloney stops using the word “God”, he might be able to make it on TV. For some reason networks don’t like it when you say that word, haha.

I remember two or three years ago, it was game 82 against the Pens, and he filled in for a sick Joe M. He kept saying it over and over. It was hilarious.

  15. Mouth, because MSG Network asked me if I’d be interested in talking to him, and I told them how Sam and I go way, way back, and he’s a local guy. So I suggested a Q&A and they agreed.

CCCP. good one. Reggie in Oakland!

  16. Dave in River Vale on

Roszival looked terrible, awful, horrible last night. Sending him to the Whale with Redden will make the Rangers cap capable of bringing a talent to the Garden and will let the young talent (who are clearly better than Roszy) play now. Is Sather’s ego more important than the Rangers?

  17. Anyone think that if they knew how good Stepan would actually be, that Christensen doesn’t get resigned???

  18. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

    morning ILB and all!!

Agree with cccp on both tenko posts!!

step should centre the line he centred last night if he makes the club.

grachev and kovalev had fights on the same night!

    Carp
so there were 9 d men on the ice this morning via a couple tweets, then they were saying one came off…..they found out it was rozy??? Trade?? Injury?? missing cartoons?? What is going on ??

  19. Stepan is a keeper for sure. This kid is this year’s Paul Stastny. and for those concerned about fatigue setting in because prior experience in college, Stastney hung in there quite nicely his rookie season.

These guys are incredible athletes in world class shape. If he “hits the wall” then you cross that bridge at that time.

Right now, he’s a player who has proven he wins battles, plays incredibly well defensively (moreso than EC or Drury or Anisimov), and has vision and puck moving skills that will be valuable to the big club. keep him!!!!!!!

  20. Dave – I agree. Roszival should be buried in Hartford. I still maintain that Roszival is better than Redden – albeit slightly.

Unfortunately, in our society, ego is more important. I wish Sather would put aside his ego, and maybe he indeed will, but Im just letting you know where he’s coming from – without actually knowing him. Remember, enough wasted $$ down in Hartford, he may actually :wink wink: get fired. He definitely values his job over the Rangers. Again, unfortunately.

One thing, though, dont overvalue preseason games. They really mean absolutely nothing.

  21. Sheldon Kanegeisser fan on

While you’re recounting “9’s,” don’t forget Reggie Fleming!

    Keep those great posts coming!

Next cuts won’t come until after Sunday’s game, Tortoreella says, after meeting with Sather and Schoenfeld…

Has to be atleast one trade in works!

souray put on waivers again, might go on re entry waivers at some point before season…..Uh oh!

  23. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

Both R’s were/are bad. I would have kept redden over rozy, but that is just me and I really DO NOT want either!!

  24. wicky – I dont want either as well, but Redden over Rozy?? Redden is worse and even more grossly overpaid than Rozy!

  25. Carp – I would be interested to know what preparation Sam does for the other team (like the day before a game) and what access do he and Joe get to the other team. Also, do they travel with the Rangers and what is the level of interaction during the travels? I seem to recall hearing that JD and Sam travelled with the team and that JD would sometimes sit with Gretzky. It would be interesting to know if they get added insight to the players in that way. Thanks.

  26. Crystal Water Triple on

#9 Andy Bathgate, Hall of Famer – bit of an oversight, there. Also #9 Reggie Fleming, although Reggie may not be quite up there with Andy, Gordie, Maurice and Bobby, in NHL folklore. Reggie, along with Vic Hadfield and Orland Kurtenbach brought muscle to a Ranger team that badly needed to upgrade in that area. Traded Johnny McKenzie to Boston to get him, so that trade worked out well for both sides.

  27. Crystal Water Triple on

Excuse me, I see, Andy is listed, but not on the line with Maurice, Gordie and Bobby. My error.

  28. Gift of GAB-orik on

No worries Carp. I know you can’t ask that question, and that it wouldn’t be answered anyway.

Stepan, Valentenko, Sauer, McDonagh, White, Kennedy, Boyle, Fedotenko…

these are all ‘bubble’ players battling for position. Drury is still in the fold, and Prospal at center… Total log jam.

So if Drury, Prospal, Christensen AA, and Boyle are all going to be centers… Stepan is getting a short straw on that one. And i don’t think he should… not at this point.

    cr
rozy does a little better skill set than redden at this point, but redden was more physical than rozy (both statements not saying much) and was actually wiling to really get in there and battle physically and was better than rozy in front of the net (again, not saying much). Because our team as a whole is bad in front of the net (depending on who they keep we could be better), I would have kept redden over rozy. If rozy made 1.2 mil per, then no. Fact is at 5 mil per he is a bad a contract as redden at 6.5 per (or girardi at 3.5).

  33. #9 Ulf Dahlen

Carp, I would like to know if in the MSG meetings Sam attends do they ever discuss having a better post game show or wrap up?

  34. Oh, and since I was very saddened at the loss this great man – even though he was a not a NY athlete, but a truly class act.

    RIP 9 Steve McNair ♥

  35. no reason why drury or christenson can’t play wing. drury should only center on the PK. didn’t drury tear it up as a wing for colorado?

  36. CCCP,
I don’t understand why you think Boyle and Fedotenko have anything to do with each other. Fedotenko is a right wing, and Boyle is a center. it is not going to come down to Boyle, or Fedotenko. Fedotenko will have more to do with Avery, who despite having a good pre season, still has a lot of numbers on the left side. Frolov, Dubi, Prospal, Boogard, and Kennedy.

  37. if it came down to an over 30 player(Fedotenko), or a 25 year old player who still has potential, not to mention great size(Boyle) i would take the potential and size.

  38. size does not matter..its how you use it! and Boyle does not know how to use his size… ok so he skates a bit faster but he still has no hands compared to Fedotenko… who knows how to use his size and got good hands plus there are plenty of centers on this team…so Boyle wont be missed in that position

  39. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

    mia, good call.

    bull dog
unfortunately for you, avery is not going anywhere. Torts is dumb, but not that dumb!

  40. and if i had to choose between potential 30-40 points over 6 points player i would take the potential 30-40 points player…even at *31 years of age*

  41. We do have a lot of centers, but not a lot of 4th line center making 4th liner dough. Boyle is really the only guy we have that is a perfect 4th line center. Well, Dreary as well, but what are the odds?

I don’t mind Boyle on the team. He knows his role!

Honestly, how would anyone feel if we waived Blowzy, and picked up Souray on re-entry waivers? Would that be equally disappointing?

  42. why is that unfortunate for me? I just think you guys have Avery colored glasses when it comes to the roster. is he going to be happy being the 4th line left wing? doubt it. but that is the spot open to him because the top 3 left wings are Frolov, Dubi, and Prospal. I know you are going to move Prospal to center to accommodate Avery right . thus making Prospal your 3rd line checking center, and Drury the 4th line center.

  43. 9: Teddy Ballgame … Ted Williams was probably the best hitter in baseball history, who missed all or parts of six seasons of his prime serving in the military in WWII and Korea. Imagine the stats he might have had.

    Sorry, CR.

    9: Rob McClanahan.

  44. bull dog – While many of us may have Avery colored glasses, is it possible that you have anti-Avery colored glasses?

    That’s a serious question.

  45. So which is more detrimental to Stepan’s development:

Let him make the team and he struggles to the point where he is eventually farmed out

    OR

Farm him out now (or at camp’s end) and let him succeed in the AHL before calling him up. How long that takes is basically up to the kid (unless of course, there’s a rash of injuries or the Rangers play well enough – ie maintain a PO position – that roster moves aren’t required).

IMO, the latter is less risky, but that isn’t to say that the former will ruin the kid, of course.

There’s also 2 different outcomes to each scenario:

He’s kept with the big club and does well enouhg (thrives even) that there’s no need to consider farming him out.

He struggles even with the Pack and doesn’t give the organization a reason to recall him, even if there are injuries.

I will say this: At least, for a change, there are some real decisions to be made involving kids! How unRanger like!

  46. you still have not answered the question. what do they have to do with each other.

    ——

what do you mean what do they have to do with each other?? one makes the team and one doesn’t! its all about roster spots, bro!

  47. 31 years old? That’s like 5 years older than 26, much older than anyone here.

I agree with Orr, Boyle knows his role. I don’t think he’s ever going to develop into the monster power forward he was projected to be. Wouldn’t be the first time the Rangers took a failed former 1st rounder and plugged him on the 4th line (Freddy Sjo).

Fedetenko might come down to a numbers game. At the very least the Rangers have given him an audition to show that he can still play. Let’s hope he doesn’t sign somewhere in the Atlantic or the East. As it is they might be stuck with Eminger and White because of their contracts.

Once again, they can’t just keep waiving vets down to Hartford because there’s a limit to veteran players that can dress for AHL games. Signing Fedetenko would mean at least one extra veteran contract goes down to HFD or it means someone like Stepan, someone whom it’s in the long term interest of the Rangers organization to develop, gets squeezed out of a job that he’s rightfully earned.

  48. Carp – I was really hoping that none of you would mention Teddy Losegame today. I was really really really really hoping. Oh well. 2 for 10 in his only World Series appearance, with a frozen head and no rings :)

  49. they do not play the same position, keeping 1 is not going to cause the other one to be cut is my point. I, by the way, also feel that Fedotenko is going to on the team. the 4 right wing that played last night, are the 4 you are going to see opening night.

  50. Carp – I agree that he is better than EC. I would never suggest otherwise. Never! I was beyond excited when they drafted him. I can easily see him becoming my favorite Rangers… especially since I haven’t had one since Leetch left.

I like him so much, and I also don’t trust Torts so much, that I am leaning towards being cautious with him. He deserves to be on the team. I am just envisioning him on Torts’ bench-to-ice yo-yo. I would hate to see that happen, but I guess if anybody has the mental toughness to handle it, it seems like this kid does. I just see out future team captain and #1 center in Stepan and I don’t want them to blow it.

  51. well, they could be related, because there would likely be an extra forward or two kept … and it wouldn’t necessarily be by position.

  52. I think Boyle may more related to Kennedy. they both play center and left wing. Fedotenko is going to be on one of the top 3 lines if they keep him, Boyle is going to be the 4th line center if he stays.

  53. #9 – Bernie Nicholls! Funny to think back at how he was our star player prior to Messier. How he had that one monster year for the Kings. And how he didn’t want to go to the Oilers at all…when finally traded from the Oilers didn’t he get a speeding ticket on the way to the airport?

Carp, I’d have a few questions for Sam:

    1. What is his feeling about how the MSG crowd is these days? The 7:00 pm start seems to ensure the building is, at best, 30% full at the drop of the puck. There isn’t nearly the amount of passion that there used to be. I know the team sucks and that effects it, but going to MSG ain’t what it used to be.

    2. How many times per game is he ordered to go on about Chris Drury’s shotblocking skills?

  54. Another reason I think all the bubble forwards are together is because of the flexibility with some of the forwards that can play both center and wing. They have a luxury to not have to worry solely about what forward position they play.

  55. Hi Ogie. Buy you a soda after the game? on

9 – how many feet of water I’ll be under if it doesn’t stop raining soon…

  56. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

    bull dog
I agree with cr on this, I just think you have anti-avery glasses. I do think boyle and feds have a lot to do with each other. I think most of the forwards have a lot to do with each other at this point. aside from a few, most can play more than one forward position, so it is more an overall number of forwards as opposed to position specific forward numbers!

  57. The real question to ask with Stepan and McDonagh deals with are the Rangers “gun shy” about keeping them in the NHL for the whole season given the way Gilroy hit the wall as he made the jump from college to the pros?

Gilroy started the season as the next best thing to sliced bread and then was being replaced by Anders Ericksson at the end of the season.

The one plus for keeping them both is that the Rangers appear willing (i.e. have the cap room) to carry three spare players so there is no need for them to have to play 82 games.

The ultimate decision might come down to a numbers question. They can be assigned to the AHL without clearing waivers so that might be the deciding factor as to whether or not they start the season in the NHL.

What needs to be kept in perspective, if they both do go to the AHL the Rangers are going to have some real NHL-caliber depth just a phone call away.

  58. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

I also think the fact that torts met with schoeny and slats and decided no more cuts are being made until after the last preseason game that they are probably trying to make a trade or two to sort some of this out and make it easier on all of our position speculation as well.

  59. It’s Craig. Meet my friend Een.

Ask Sam why he becomes obsessed with the number of shots on goal. He makes me nervous when he does that. He counts shots on goal almost as often as he had to promote “Boomer and Carton” last night.

  60. wicky,
I do not feel that Avery is part of the core on this team, therefore I feel he is expendable. his position has a lot of competition, and of the top left wings( Frolov, Dubi, and Prospal) he is 4th, and that is not including the younger guys on the way up( Kennedy, Grachev, and Zuccarello).

  61. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

    bull dog
I don’t really see how these lines are a problem and avery is NOT on the 4th line

    Alex Frolov-Vinny Prospal-Marian Gaborik
    Brandon Dubinsky-Artem Anisimov-Ryan Callahan
    Sean Avery-Derek Stepan-Ruslan Fedotenko
    Derek Boogaard-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust

you have EC, Kennedy, and drury (injured now). White is indeed the odd man out probably. Either way (I would have kennedy on the 4th between boogey and prust), avery at 3rd line left wing (or the way it could be set up 2nd line B) doesn’t seem like a major issue. why cut out a guy like avery that can bring so much in different ways to the team every game to fit a guy like drury or prospal at a left wing position that they do not have to play because they are just effective if not more as centres?? I think you are just anti avery.

  62. Avery ain’t going nowhere.
I was disappointed in Grachev. I thought he would show more then he did in camp & pre-season games.
I know he’s a kid, hope he has a great year in the AHL.
