Drury doesn’t need a new equipment… Drury needs new team!
fran
OK class….time for some ancient history.
Some misconception about Connecticut, the New Haven Nighthawks, and the Hartford Whalers. Note the term
“Whalers” not Whale. there never was a Hartford Whale.
They first saw life as the NEW ENGLAND WHALERS,and originated in Boston of all places.in the old WHL ..the upstart new pro league. ( And there was some really great hockey played in that old league prior to NHL incorporation.) The Birmingham Bulls had a dynamite team( many of them winding up with the Flyers in Philly.)
But I digress…( as I am wont to do), and you must recall that the Nighthawks operating out of New Haven were a farm club of the Islanders. In fact guys like Nystrom and Gary Howatt, several of those eventual Isles, made their bones in New Haven prior to their 4 years reign.
The Whalers were brought to Hartford under Baldwin, and they were an immediate fan favorite with the Hartford team, but kept the name.Whalers. you know, those hard bitten New Englanders who braved the briny searching forwhales forthe oil that kept the lamps lit all over the country such as it was back then. ( If you haven’t read Moby Dick by Melville ( or seen the film) you should. Now in Mystic Connecticut is the last of the old Whaling ships on display just as it was back in the 1840s, and it brought back reportedly the most whales in history. If you want a pleasant visit and not go too far from home, take a visit to Mystic and visit the village there…your kids will love it. That ship;s name is the Charles W Morgan.
Much whaling sailed out of Nantucket also, as well as New Bedford Mass. A “Nantucket Sleigh Ride was when a hardy tar slammed a huge harpoon into a whale, and as can be imagined the whale expressed great indignation at such effrontery and took off at top speed draggin the dory that the harpooneers were in with him. (What a thrill – ya hadda be there.)
But that’s the historical element and connection..the Whalers had great uniforms. Bright green and white trim, with the combined W and the Fluke ( tail) of the whale as their icon. I still think they were among the sharpest and
sedate shirts to match the Leafs and Wings. Two colors, no extravagant and silly diagonal slashes all over breaking up the outline and actually camouflaging the shirts of the skaters.
I’d love to see the Whalers sharpen their “poons” again, even in the AHL ( actually where they belonged.)
And yes Brass Bonanza unique and unforgettable, and it used to drive the opposition nuts after every goal for, and their entry out on the ice. I was a Whalers fan, but when Rangers came to town I had to let the Whalers go.
And the greatest goal I ever saw scored was against the Whalers by Mike Bossy. An almost impossible shot. And it was an overtime killer. Greg Millen was the goal tender for the Whalers if I recall correctly.
Has official name been stated yet? All reports say the Connecticut whale, but the shirt in that link says whalers. PLEASE let it be the whalers!!! The whale is just LAME.
Mickeym,
best of luck on your big move. Keep us up to date.
btw, sorry for a bit off topic, but congrats to me, I’m a great aunt! Yes, even at 26 :)
My best friend’s daughter, who is my namesake fyi, and considers me her “auntie laurel” (her siblings do, too, always have, always will, I love it) had a healthy baby boy last night!
And now my best friend is a grandma!
Your “family” in life is what you make of it. Remember that, all. Thanks for letting me share my happy news with this “family.”
P.S. Grandmom is a Blackhawks fan…and they may move back there from Vegas. May be tough for me when the tot gets older. Any advice on how to turn an out-of-town babe into a Ranger fan!!
Carp, Im very emotional right now watching the Yankees memorial. So I want to take this time to thank you once again for giving me the opportunity to continue posting here, though both you and I know that my past actions should have forfeited those rights.
I truly thank you Carp, and all of you for your concern for myself and my pet. Tiki is terrific. She’s resting at home – on my favorite pillow :) – and Pathology tests will be back in a week.
CR, you are a bonehead, through and through my friend. and not just a loon! (inside joke between me and CR) enjoy tonight…tiki home and good, and the memorial :)

good luck and you need to let me know where you end up and if I can help with anything!
Someone posted a few threads back about NHL network showing a ton of pre season games, well i don’t see them on my guide. It is all playoff repeats! Elaborate please! Little help??
MY face is turningred from your kind words. My only intention was to nring a bit of hjistorical reality into the old WHL connection with the NHL, and to clear up any misconceptions about the Whalers. Now I ask you…how many teams in the NHL would have had the entire roof of their stadium fall into the arena crushing everything and all from heavily accumulated snow, then have the team have to go 40 miles north into Mass ( Springfield), to practices and scheduled games and then HAVE THEIR FANS FOLLOW THEM NORTH EACH GAME DATE, by forming a caravan northbound on I-91, and called itself the I-91 Club. They were great fans, just a ration of more of them would have saved the franchise,( perhaps).
fran, you must come to the next boneheads fest! We will follow you at warren like lemmings….

Is Avery an odd man out? According to Larry, this could be the case. At least until Drury was injured:
Bad break for Drury, good break for Stepan and everyone else trying to grab a spot.
If Stepan’s effort so far translates to the pre-season games it sounds like he is a lock to stick with the big boys.
This is the first season i’ve been keeping an eye on twitter for hockey updates all day and it makes for a much more insightful training camp – no longer living on scraps of info from the blogs, its on my ipod the second it happens!!
uk, for some reason ive been the same way with more anticipation for this season than in the past. now drury mightve played rw brooks said, so it could help a winger instead of a center, but i sure hope they go with stepan at least for the 9-10 games he has before his contract kicks in.
UKRanger
Ilb – Based on reports so far Aves is having a good camp, hes banged in a few goals and showed he is one of the fitter players. But LW is crowded if Frolov, Prospal and Dubi are all already pencilled in to play there.
The first cuts happen on the 25th so i imagine by the end of the Saturday afternoon Devils game the roster will have been trimmed down a bit and we’ll have an idea what the depth chart looks like and if anyone is going on Waivers!
UKRanger
Grabby – lets hope he does and then proves to good to be sent back down!!
it seems with all the attention hes getting that even without drury being out, he was gonna get a shot, its just now grachev has a shot too. im hoping, because i dont wanna see kennedy, fedotenko, white, christensen or boyle on the team. none of them except maybe for christnsen could play on the top line and thats what scares me. if stepan doesnt crack the top 2 lines, hes most likely in hartford.
that tears it!! olga, you and the rest of the boys get over here and drag your friend outta bed and make him go to school and get his chores done. hes never gonna be a good farmer watchin hockey all day long!!
Nice story Fran, but that’s not the story I’ve read about how Hartford got its name. The Hartford team wanted to call themselves the “WHLers” but the league wouldn’t let them. So they inserted the “a” in the middle to come up with the name Whalers.
and wheres your other no good hockey lovin buddies orr, greg, wicky, ilb, linda, tim, and the rest of them?? im gonna have a nice chat with your teacher. whats his name again? mr carpiniello? hes gonna hear it fro m me!
