About Author

  1. So you have to purchase a ticket, then purchase autographs?

Do they validate parking with that?

  2. …and will they be donating profits to charity or pocketing it all for themselves?

By the time they’re finished it will be as much as 5 days at Disneyworld!!

  3. Well hopefully they’re paying Messier enough.

As for Mario, supporting a Sidney Crosby in your basement isn’t cheap.

  4. A little OT, but we attended a charity hockey game a few weekends ago. Jim Dowd’s Shoot for the Stars Charity. It was an all-star game between Monmout and Ocean counties here in NJ. They had a signed Drury jersey, signed Prospal stick, Devils, Rangers, and Philly tickets, assorted signed Brodeur items. All in all about 25 different prizes. What do we win? The Devils tickets. Jim Dowd’s wife gave my husband his card and said to call him to make arrangements. We don’t even know what game it will be. Of all the luck.

  5. On another note, it was an awesome thing to see where the charity dollars went. Developmentally challenged kids they had on skates in between periods playing a game. They had Van Rymsdyke from the Flyers out there, Dowd was on the ice…very moving experience and worthwhile donation.

  6. Steinersports and charity don’t belong on the same page.
Admittedly, in general, hockey does very admirable job as far as charities.

    Good morning, boneheads.

  7. Just a thought, but in regards to the KRod situation… the Mets can point to Kovalchuk’s contract rejection and say to the aritration panel, ‘but look! his was rejected, why can’t Krod’s?’

PS Yes, I know they are totally different situations, but it’s August and I’m bored. :P

  8. Gravey (Formerly known as jor71) on

    53 is a Prime Number.

53 can be Partitioned 27 times with each term no larger than 2.

53 can be Partitioned 261 times with each term no larger than 3.

53 can be Partitioned 1350 times with each term no larger than 4.

    53 is the sum of five consecutive primes (5 + 7 + 11 + 13 + 17).

The Chemical Element Iodine has an atomic number of 53.

In the year 53 AD Kanishka I, king of the Kush in India, protector of Buddhism was born.
In the year 53 AD Euodius succeeded Saint Peter as Patriarch of Antioch.

  9. CT – are you the walrus? lol

Lenin – was da greatest leader of Soviet people… NOT!

i think i found solution for Mets troubles…they should move the team to KC! :P

  10. Wiki much, Gravey? Although the math stuff made my brain hurt and now I need some asprin.

CCCP, HA! The sad thing is that the Royals would be the better team if that did happen.

  11. Mickey M.

As much as I’d love for the Mets to start looking into voiding any contracts that constrain the team from adding better talent to fill out their squad it’s literally a completely different ballgame when it comes to how contracts are treated in MLB and NHL. MLB players association can throw it’s weight around to the extent that the NHLPA couldn’t even imagine.

  12. Speaking of baseball. I always wondered if baseball players ever get to play golf. By the time the regular season is over and they are out of the playoffs, it’s pretty darn cold.

  13. Well if you ever wanted the Islanders to remain eternally uncompetitive just have the Wilpons (Mets owners) buy them.

Citi Field is like the Prudential Center. Nice arena, terrible team that plays inside.

  14. ilb,

They play in the warm weather states. It’s a pretty long off-season for most teams.

  15. The Mets are basically the Rangers of MLB (NYR, I know there’s a Texas Rangers).

Large market team, long suffering fanbase, incredibly inept ownership and management that never seems to have a clear focus of what to do with their team and they’re letting once in a decade talent go to waste surrounded by ill-fitting/overpaid/mediocre complimentary talent.

  16. It’s been amazingly quiet on Kovalchuk’s front, eh.
Back on courts, see you all later

  17. CTB, Oh I know how powerful the MLBPA is compared to the NHLPA. I mostly said that ‘tongue in cheek’, although it would be hysterical and sad if they actually did such a thing. You totally nailed my thoughts on the two franchises and how scarily alike they are. They’re mirror images of each other, pretty much.

53 thomas howard of the raiders.

    morning ILB and all!

    Rant time…
I used to have a lot of respect for tony dungy, but he just showed me he is yet another stupid religious judgmental zealot who just needs to shut his stupid Byfuglien religious mouth!!!!!

Cursing does not make a human being bad, and being religious definitely does not make a person good (usually makes them a worse…JUDGMENTAL!!!)

    Ok, I feel better…sort of

  19. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

Anyone else think Shanny should be head of the NHLPA???

  20. Jlone2Bubblehead on

I agree with having Shanny as the head of the NHLPA.

    Gday Wicky, momma et al.

I see Ortmeyer is unsigned. I also see that Kyle wellwood is unsigned. While there is no room for Orty, I think we could make room for Wellwood. AAron ward… is he to old to help? I remeber him being quite a force on our blueline but didnt get along with 68, so off he went.

  21. Jlone2Bubblehead on

Isnt Shanny working for the league in some capacity? That would be a huge conflict of interest.

  22. It’s people like Dungy who give people who are quietly religious a bad name. Don’t force your ideals and ideologies on other is how I see it. People can make their own decisions about stuff like that, including if they choose to curse or not.

  23. Yes, Shanny is working the league…maybe rules or outreach or something like that. I don’t really know though.

  24. Jlone2Bubblehead on

Personaly, I have a very difficult time expressing myself without cursing. Then again, I am a retired Sailor…

  25. >>30 DAYS UNTIL TRAINING CAMP!!! That was especially for JB

Thanks, Linda! I hope those 30 days won’t feel too long.

  26. I’m sometimes at a loss to follow a lot of this material that flows like warm cider in October, but often becomes unintelligible to me due to the fact that it’s inside hockey for the Charter Bone Heads.
I am rewarded however when I see new apprentice Boneheads sign in with names that are only slightly less as long as the opening of the Gettysburg address. Eventually many of them thereafter shorten them dramatically. I’m curious about one thing…the lad named Greg…does he really type out all those Zees each posting – or does he have a one shot configuration for them.?

  27. Carp:

Do you know or can you find out if the NHL network will be televising the prospects tournament in Traverse City again this year? I read awhile back that the NHL was analyzing the demand and would decide if it was worth airing again. Unfortunately, ‘analyzing the demand’ sounded like ‘trying to find any way out of it’ to me and I haven’t been able to find out their decision. Thanks!

  28. No, Fran, he isn’t. Once you load the RR page your computer should automatically remember your screen name and your email. Every time you change your name, it will remember that one. The way your posts look, I don’t think you type right inti the comment column, but rather are transferring your text from elsewhere.

Besides, if Greg had to type it every time, he would likely misspell every single “Z” :-)

  29. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

    how have you been??

    well said about dungy!

  30. CT – “Shut the fu** up, Donny! V.I. Lenin! Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov!”

    Couldn’t resist ;)

  31. Shanahan is currently NHL’s Vice President of Hockey and Bussiness Delopment. He probably could find some position in NHLPA, but it was his choice to work for NHL.

    Who’s Dungy?

  32. Tony Dugy, former head coach of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, and spiritual/life mentor for Michael Vick after he got out of jail. He’s written a few best selling books, too.

And now, apparently, the judge of other head coaches. I can only imagine what he would say about Tortorella.

  33. Fifty-three is the 16th prime number. It is also an Eisenstein prime.

The sum of the first 53 primes is 5830, which is divisible by 53, a property shared by few other numbers.[1][2]

53 written in hexadecimal is 35, that is, the same characters used in the decimal representation, but reversed. Three multiples of 53 share this property: 371 = 17316, 5141 = 141516, 99481 =1849916.

But 53 can not be expressed as the sum of any integer and its base 10 digits, making 53 a self number.

wow people defending the fat lowlife Rex Ryan because somebody had the nerve to call him out. Tony Dungy has more class in his little finger than Rex has in his enormous body. yet you all jump to Rex’s defense. I guess that is America today, defend the dirt bag, and bash the good person.

  35. gregm_section403 on

anyone see this? what’s the point/purpose of a single face-off circle?

apparently buttman is experimenting with it. also notice the ‘too many men on the ice’ zone near the bench.

sorry if you already discussed this.

  36. gregm_section403 on

yeh, totally stupid. i can’t even think of a reason why they would do go to a single face-off circle.

i get the ‘too many men’ zone and i guess it makes sense.

but i’m dumbfounded by the face-off idea.

  37. I collect hockey cards. Anybody want to buy some Nigel Dawes rookie cards?
Tonight on Blueshirt Banter internet radio at 8 PM, true Ranger great Ron Greschner is our guest.
We will take phone calls and have a live chat room.

    See you boneheads there.

  38. FTR, I’m not defending Ryan. At all. Could care less about him and his cursing. Or about Dungy and what he has to say. Just some idle talk for a dead day in the middle of August. Especially since there is pretty much nothing going on in hockey news. It’s a dead zone right now.

  39. I like that Jets coach. I was watching that Hard Knocks show. He seems like a cool guy. Total opposite as Torts, but entertaning in his own way.

I wish they made a Hard Knocks hockey series. That would be pretty cool.

  40. bulldog,

you call someone a “fat low life” and then have the nerve to say he’s the dirt bag? Interesting.

So your logic is if you curse then you are bad and if you don’t then you are good? I wonder how many catholic priest said “gosh darnit, I feel so awfully bad for touching that little boy”…well, he didn’t curse so he can’t be all bad, right?

I’d rather have a conversation with someone who curses to my face then with someone who talks carcillo behind my back.

And apparently cursing is worse then dog fighting in dungy’s “holier than thou” book??

    But I guess that’s America.

  41. That one face off circle is horrible. Just from the little defense I played, I knowthat dmen use the circles and hash marks for proper positioning etc. So really not a very practical idea. I didn’t like many of the ideas I read about that summit. I do like getting rid of trapezoid for goalie.

  42. bull dog line on

when in doubt attack catholics. you are to easy, I threw the bait in the water and you bit.
I wonder if you are, eh never mind.

  43. Bulldog,

go ahead and complete your thought…am I what?

What bait? You called someone an offensive name based on physical characteristics and then said he was the dirt bag. I say you’re the dbag for generalizing because a grown adult chooses to curse.
What is it that Rex has done that makes him a low life?

I wasn’t attacking Catholics. I was pointing out your flawed logic. Not all Catholics touch young boys, again you’re generalizing. Not everyone who curses is a bad person.

Anybody who isn’t interested in this debate PLEASE skip over future posts because I can

  44. bull dog line on

all three of the Rangers 4th lines could be considered the most talented 4th lines in the NHL.

  45. Well since the NFL talk seems to be centered here…

Does Favre realize what an absolute joke he has become?
Does the joke that Favre has become realize what an absolute joke the joke has become?
COME ON! DUDE…53 retirements for The Fav-re!

  46. Was going to say I can do this all night

can’t wait to here the well thought out and intelligent reply that I’m sure is in the works.

I’m at a loss as to what exactly I was in doubt about.

  47. bull dog line on

you are what you are joke, you put it out there for all to see with your comment about catholic priests. its the same reason you went after Dungy.

  48. Perhaps we should leave religion out of this one anyway…I doubt it has anything to do with it..and doubt it would end being pretty, not the way it’s going already.

  49. NYR’s three lines are considered the most talented in the NHL? By whom?

They didn’t look all that talented last year, and all we have is Frolov, who didn’t look to good last year, and White who is yet another 3rd/4th liner who gets to play the top line [potentially], the magician Hobbit that everyone is so nuts aboot despite the fact that he hasn’t played a single NHL game, and that’s pretty much it.

Doesn’t really look all that talented to me. But, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.

  50. ilb,
I’m doing well, very busy…getting my business “official”
    lots of nutrition work.
    I’m back in school sort of…working towards 4 more degrees…I don’t know why…just because I guess…
    How bout you?

Just kidding. I didn’t count it. Seems like it though.

My apologies. Just wait and see, Kiss is going to put their music on that stupid show “Glee”. Sickening!

As long as The Police don’t end up on Glee, I’ll be happy.

  56. So bulldog argues by making open ended accusations with no factual basis?

I am what I am? I put it out there for all to see? Well then, what am I? Come on man, just say it. Are you the amazing kreskin? You can profile an individual based on one anonymous blog posting? Or are you full of carcillo?

One last time, I did not attack catholic priests nor did I go after dungy. I very simply used an example to point out your hypocrisy as well as dungy’s. Your whole first post was hypocritical from the start. So there, I say you’re a hypocrit…what am I?

And can somebody please tell me why Willie Mitchell still isn’t signed? These are the things that keep me up at night.

Gotta love these quotes from The Rangers website.

-Boogaard brings a fear factor to MSG

-‘Scary’ enforcer’s presence gives Rangers a psychological edge .

    Gotta love it!!!!!!!!

    Knock knock

    whos there?

    BOO !!

    Boo who ?

Dont cry cuz its BOOGAARD thats who!!!!

Wille Michelle is garbage. Thats why.

  58. Greg,

do you have an inside source that says Mitchell is garbage or is this just your opinion? Because if it’s from a paid source then I will believe it. Otherwise, I will keep searching for more clues to this ever deepening mystery.

  59. MSG.com are such dopes. Psychological edge?? Gimme a break.

The only thing Boogaard gives us is potential entertainment when we’re getting raped every which way by an actual good team. I hope he’s willing to annihilate someone for no good reason when we’re down 7-1.

Unlike Brash*t. Fugg! I hate that guy so much. He got the last laugh in the end. Stealing money from this organization.

    Kick his azz!!!!

    Top Ten Victums this year:

#1 Colton Orr , this showdown will prove who used to wear the skirt around here.

#2 Brashear , Boogy will say ” no hugging huggybear” and KO him in the first!!

#3 Jody (girls name) Shelley(girls name). Hes one and done.

#4 Jansen the scrub gets creamed along with buttbuddy David Clarkson.

    #5 Eric Godard meet BOOGAARD!!!

#6 Mitch Fritz will play enough in preseason to get plummeled by BOOGY!!

#7 Eric Boulton ,pounded to the grounded.

#8 Trevor Gillies , Daddy wont be proud.

#9 Matt Carkner ,punching bag supreem!!

#10 Riley Cote , he will be an example.

  61. #2 – Brash*t doesn’t have a team

#4 – Janssen and Clarkson are not teammates [Blue & Devs respectively]

#6 – Are you saying Boogaard will play so bad that he’ll end up in Hartford?

#10 – Cote retired because Orr scrambles his brains so badly, he sneezed out little chunks which made him even more stupid after each sneeze. Smart move.

I’m looking forward to the fights with Orr, Shelley, and Godard. I don’t know if the Devs will be playing that Blonde-Lattorney-Pierre-Luc, or what ever the fugg his dumb name is. But, that could be entertaining.

  62. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Devils Suck!! " … says Greg L. on

    Wile Michelle is garbage

-is my opinion so ,no it is not a fact. I do have “inside information” on him cuz half the people ’round here love the Canucks and have all this news I could care less about. Wille is a journey man . Does n’t take a genious to ..( I spelt it wrong , bla bla)to see Us Rangers dont want him cuz he is not what we need. He is other teams garbage so yeah if ya wanna know the truth ,hes garbage. Purly in the purest.

  63. Blue Seat Horror on

Orr, I have to disagree that Donnie Brashco stole from the Rangers. Sather willingly paid him. Unfortunately everyone in the world but one bushy-browed idiot knew he wasn’t worth that much money. That’s not theft, it’s misappropriation of funds.

Greg. Brashear won’t be in the NHL this year. You might want to amend #2.

  64. Blue Seat Horror on

Don’t forget the Isles signed reigning PIM champ Konopka. Should be some fishstick fisticuffs ahead.

  65. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Devils Suck!! " … says Greg L. on

    #2 Brash will be back

#4 I saw them “teaming up” during the offseason and the magazine was playgirl.( was on a friends coffee table)

#6 Tampa bay will call him up and BOOGY will fight him.

#10 I used Cote cuz it sounded cool. My bad.

  66. I think Brash*t hates the Rangers so much, he signed here, and deliberately played like extra extra garbage, just so he can have the last laugh. Especially with how the fans treated him when he signed.

I truly hate Brash*t. It’s not “hockey hate”, I really hate the guy. What a bouchebag. Someone call McSorley, if he’s still in good enough shape.

  67. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Devils Suck!! " … says Greg L. on

ORR , you don’t hate him personaly . Hes really an ok guy , we even shared a drink and smoked up a storm in here during the playoffs.
On a serious note hes mild mannored and helps out kids. The guy you hate is the “shell called Brashear” Hes lost any edge he had after McSorly KO’d it outta him. He really didnt fight when he was here and thought his pay cheque was earned by skating hard not fighting hard. He entered fights with a bully menality but was clearly mismatched most of the time. Brashear cheap shotted bets cuz Brash really cant do anything anymore then do stuff like that. Hes a gutless puke and is so washed up his name is now becoming a joke. We are , you are utterlly disapointed in his fighting skills and I was too . He needs to retire like Laraque cuz at least George left with his brain and legacy intact.

  68. Olga Folkyerself on

And Brashear negotiated his own contract with the Rangers. If a dope like that can out-deal Sather, it’s time for Slats to go…

FIRE SATHER! Or did I mention that before?

  69. 53…the # of F-Bombs Rex Ryan dropped in the opening episode of hard knocks. Don’t believe me?ask Tony dungy.

  70. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Devils Suck!! " … says Greg L. on

Brashear didnt neg anything. Sather needs to sign Staal and play the kids like hes done by not aquiring anyone expensive. Sathers off season is solid B . Unlike Chicago ( one and done) they have unloaded thier #1 Goalie . If The Rangers play them this year , i’d bet you we beat ’em and if we don’t ….I’ll not post for 2 weeks.

  71. Saw a pretty cute girl at the gym today with an Adam Graves shirt. Had to compliment it :D

  72. Olga Folkyerself on

Brashear outfoxed Slats all by himself. The only Solid B Sather has is Bowel Movement. IF Chicago is “one and done” then Sather is None and Done and Done and Done and Done and Done and Done and Done and Done and Done.

  73. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

Who is the jack wagon that brought up religion here in the first place…….OH (insert rex ryan expletive here)!!!!! It was me, my bad!

  74. CT – heh me to…I loves the Lebowski quotes…

Someone mentioned Kyle Wellwood…I’m not sure why but…he’d be a top line center on the Rangers. Funny how that works…

And on Brashear: I rank that as one of the all-time worst signings by the Rangers…and if we’re looking to blame someone, Tortorella admitted it was his idea.

Greg – If you’re still wagering, put some money on that statement about Chicago. They’ve got a very solid team still, and have a bunch of young budding guys that are expected to fill out their bottom lines…Beech, Makarov, Skille and Morin could all be vying for roster spots. I don’t know about a repeat, but they’ll definitely be in the top five of NHL teams. I think next year is Washington’s to lose though.

  75. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

anyone have ESPN insider? What did the summer skate say today about the rangers??

  76. I haven’t played it yet, Ran. I totally forgot aboot the game, and found out two days ago that the game was coming out in a few weeks.

Like I mentioned last night, after watching the trailer, and some videos, I’m not exactly impressed with the game. They added a few minor details, which I appreciate, but instead of changing things that needed to be changed, they added impossible highlight reels moves that are not realistic. I’m still enraged that they didn’t even change the fighting. It’s so stupid.

I was considering paying the $60 for it, but I think instead I’m going to order it on Gamefly, and then email them and tell them that it got lost in the mail, so I get it for free. That will be my revenge on EA. Besides, there’s other things I want to buy.

  77. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Devils Suck!! " … says Greg L. on

Phil , I bet ya Chicago is not top 5 in the league .

    #1 Washinton
    #2 Detroit
    #3 Pittsburgh
    #4 Vancouver
    #5 Dallas

All will make it( not exactly those teams) past Chicago the chumps. Chicago is a joke. Everyone felt sorry for them cuz they sucked for the last 20 years . Jeremy Roenick ,Larmer and denis Savard is the only saving grace for that repulsive stagnate team.

  78. DALLAS??? #5??? You do realize that they have Kari Lehtonen and Raycroft as their goalies.

Dallas is nothing, they wont even make the playoffs.

The Kings and Sharks are way better than them. Even the Blues, if Halak plays for them the way he did in the playoffs for the Habs.

The Preds, Yotes, Avs are better as well.

  79. And the Hawks are better than them as well. Turco isn’t anything special, but the Hawks have a solid enough defense that made life easy enough to make Niemi look like a star. They have the core, that’s all that matters. Prospects can fill the spots that were lost, or at least some. Not all the players they got rid of were anything special. Byfuglien, Burrish, Eager, and a few others were not the guys that got them *into* the playoffs. They lost physicality, but they have enough skill.

Also, I’m not impressed with the Craps. I think the Pens are the team to beat, as well as the Devils, if Kovalchuckles can manage to play in that boring system.

Trashers wont make it, but they’ll be a tough team to play against, and the Bolts could very well make it with the team they have. Especially if Vinny gets his brash*t together.

The Bruins could be really tough too.

  80. My prediction for the upcoming season, as far as standings…

  81. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Devils Suck!! " … says Greg L. on

Umm noway ORR , This is the East :

    1. Capitals
    2. Bruins
    3. Penguins
    4. Carolina
    5. Senators
    6. Rangers
    7. Devils
    8. Sabres
    9. Canadiens

  82. Canes in 4th place? That’s a stretch. Same with the Sens. I don’t think the Habs can make the playoffs with Price. His fragile eggshell mind can’t handle the pressure of Montreal, and leading a team like that. And I know you’re blinded by Blue, but the Devs, and Flyers are a lot better than you think.

  83. don’t yall love the haters (not rangers fans) who had NOTHING to say about the Brashear signing and are harping over Boogaard? LOL they are SUCH HATERS cannot wait for him to bust some faces.

  84. “Yeah, because “busting faces” really puts pucks in the net, and keeps them out.”

Yea, because people running into Lundqvist (who was SPENT by the end of the season) and targeting Gaborik may be less of a problem.

You aren’t very bright, ORR!! are you

    Summer Skate: New York Rangers
Rangers set sights on maintaining team’s young core

    Puck Prospectus/ESPN The Magazine

Using the VUKOTA projection system of Puck Prospectus, Insider takes the temperature of key players on every NHL team. For a detailed explanation of Prospectus’ proprietary GVT value metric, read more here.

Summer Skate — New York Rangers

General manager Glen Sather’s biggest move to date this offseason was the signing of talented but inconsistent ex-Kings winger Alexander Frolov, albeit to an innocuous one-year, $3 million deal. But what should be the biggest move of the offseason is hopefully still to come, and that’s the re-signing of 23-year-old rearguard Marc Staal, who’s on the verge of becoming a legitimate No. 1 defenseman for the Rangers. Unfortunately, by playing in front of elite goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, New York’s fine young defense corps generally doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

    Trending up: G Martin Biron
Last season: -7.8 GVT | VUKOTA projection: 2.6 GVT

Veteran netminder Martin Biron wasn’t fully appreciated by Flyers fans and management for very solid seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09 — last we checked, .915 and .917 were above-average save percentages. After a dismal campaign in a backup role on Long Island, look for the 33-year-old veteran to bounce back to a solid performance level with the Rangers, while getting a chance to spell Lundqvist on a regular basis. Biron’s experience and quality should entice head coach John Tortorella to lean on Lundqvist’s backup more frequently than in recent campaigns, when only lesser options were available.

    Trending down: C Vinny Prospal
Last season: 9.1 GVT | VUKOTA projection: 6.4 GVT

After his third tour of duty in Tampa Bay ended very poorly — his 0.4 GVT tells you just how dismal it was — Prospal got a chance to redeem himself in New York. Though many observers figured the Czech centerman would benefit from lining up with high-scoring winger Marian Gaborik on a regular basis, the fact is that large portions of Prospal’s bounce-back season were spent with lesser linemates, so kudos to the 13-year veteran for producing anyway. Unfortunately though, Prospal tends to be highly inconsistent from one campaign to the next, so don’t be surprised if 2010-11 is another dip on the roller coaster. -Seppa

    [+] EnlargeMats Zuccarello Aasen
Bruce Bennett/Getty ImagesThe Rangers hope Zuccarello-Aasen’s craftiness on the ice will pay off.

E.J.’s Name to Know: Mats Zuccarello Aasen, RW

The first thing you notice about Zuccarello Aasen is his size. You can’t help it. He’s small. He’s listed at 5-foot-9, 170 pounds on the Rangers’ website, but don’t believe it. The Oslo (Norway) native makes Marty St. Louis look like a power forward. Of course, St. Louis’ size hasn’t stopped him from becoming an NHL star.

When you watch Zuccarello Aasen play, you notice something else about him. He’s a clever player. He can get in and out of traffic and he’s not afraid.

The undrafted 22-year-old (he turns 23 on Sept. 1) opened some NHL eyes with his play for Modo in the Swedish Elite League as well as his Olympic performance for an overmatched Team Norway. In fact, Zuccarello Aasen led the Swedish league with 64 points in 55 games. (Before you get too crazy about that, keep in mind former Ranger Jan Hlavac was the league’s fifth-leading scorer as well as its top goal producer.)

It will be interesting to see how his game translates to the smaller North American ice surfaces. If he can impress in training camp, he should have a chance to earn a spot on a team that struggled to score goals last season. While I’m not sold that he can make the jump to the NHL, he’s an intriguing player who just might be fun to watch. — Hradek

  86. Noonan, you’re a moron to think guys like Carcillo, Rutuu, and others would think twice about crashing the net because big bad Boogaard is on the ice. You dope, they do it, and then they turtle, and draw a penalty, like Avery does every fuggin game.

Do you actually watch hockey? And I’m talking the “new NHL”, not the old NHL where you can get away with killing a guy for hitting your star player.

The Bruins are a good team. And a playoff team. Just because they blew a 4 game lead in the playoffs doesn’t mean they’ll suck this year. Wake up!

  87. greg you did not pick the rangers first. shocking.
oh and gillies father was who? not clark right?

  88. Oh yeah, and as far as I know, all the Canes did was get Babchuk, and Corvo back, which makes their PP better. What else? Jared Staal, who probably will be in the AHL.

The Canes have Staal, Cole, Jokinen, LaRose, Samsonov, Tlusty, Sutter. With a lineup like that, I think 7th place is appropriate.

  89. Now that’s a motivating video. The Rangers can’t do that. I mean, what can you take from last season to pump us up this season?

They would have a few goals, a couple of middle fingers from Avery, some shots of Gabby sticking his tongue out, Hank drinking gatorade and making a few great saves, Torts slapping his hands together while a vein tries to escape from his head, Prospal’s tan, and that’s basically it, all while the Hannah Montana theme song is going on. You get the best of both worlds, which really means that Dolan get sthe best of both worlds whether we win or lose, because we’re all suckers, and continue to fill his pockets with cash he doesn’t deserve.

    Rant over!

  90. Olga Folkyerself on

Black Hawks will be back Baby! Top 5 in the West next year.

Rangers will be twice as good. 10th.

  91. Hugo Folkyerself on

Yes, but will Hugh Jessiman play for the Black Hawks? Or will he hold out for a trade back to NY?

  92. Hugh Jess Folkyerself on

I was going to retire, but Hey, if Brett Favre can come back again, well, so can I.

  93. Hugh Jess Folkyerself on

Hey, I’m in the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Black Hawks Organization. This year I have a better chance of playing on the Black Hawks than Sather has of winning a Cup in New York.

  94. Who will have more career NHL goals: boogaard or jessiman?

This question needs to be asked and so I beg not to be carped.

  95. Hugh Jess Folkyerself on

Boogaard has 2 goals in 255 games. He’s gone 4 seasons without a goal. Who’s the sucker that bet he would get 5 this year?

    I’ve gone 4 seasons without a NHL game! I’d get 2 goals in the first 25 games. If I get 25 games….

That question is a toss-up Joke. Actually more like a throw-up…

  96. I wonder if Greg’s actually gonna send me the $20. Ha. Risky bet, for sure.

I already know what I’m going to buy with it. A nice brain with Noonan. I was in Target today, and they had a nice pink one. A bit veiny, but I’m sure it’s good enough ;)

    Bed time….zzzz

  97. wicky (Our D is SOFT and give Prust an A!!!!) on

    thanks for the post!

    Happy Birthday bro!!!

  98. I must say that I’m a bit surprised at the placement of a number of players that several of the posters rated higher than I would have, and also lower than I would have.

I do not see where the Canes have improved themselves very much this off season, and I was not terribly impressed by the team last year. I’d have them somewhere in the middle of the eastern pack. Same holds true for Bruins.

I also wonder about the Islanders being taken above the
Panthers. Could be, but I doubt it.

And why has Philly been picked so low? And Canadiens picked so high?
I also think that the Caps may not be as potent as so many believe….and Ovechkin was not the player last year that he had been formerly..a bit of a slip showing for this erstwhile dynamo? I, like several others, believe that the Bolts may well surprise this coming season, with or without a typical Vinny season. I also am surprised that Hartnell isn’t given the credit that he so richly deserves. This guy is a skate thru the wall to Git ya, type, and absolutely fearless in all departments.

I would hesitate to make a placement anywhere in the standing by Rangers til after they have been watched for several coming season opening games. They will remain a mystery til then, at least.

  99. Caps should win the East again by virtue of strength of schedule. Tampa might have improved quite a bit and ATL added some nice players but the SE still lags the other East divisions. The Pens/Flyers/Devils will steal points from each other even if it’s a repeat of the Devils dominating the Pens who in turn dominate the Flyers. I could see the Bruins win the NE, their regression into the 08/09 Rangers offense was heavily attributed to injuries. Although some long term injuries for them would do wonders for cap relief.

Assuming the Caps/Pens/Bruins/Flyers/Devils occupy the top 5 spots in some permutation, the final 3 spots are well up for grabs as the 3 point games keeps lots of teams in the mix until the end of the season. Sabers/Rangers/Bolts/Sens/Habs all have chances to make it assuming particular things happen or don’t happen for each team.

  100. Greg – Two words: You’re on. In fact, I find it curious that you talk so poorly of the Hawks and seemingly think highly of the Pens, when the Pens basically were in an equally bad cap situation. Now they’re going into the season without Gonchar, Fedotenko, Guerin and a wing that can help take some of the burden of Crosby and Malkin. Certainly, they’ll be a tough team. But top five? I doubt it.

In contrast, the Hawks have basically maintained their top-two forward and defense lines. Turco is as solid as Niemi…probably more solid. And above everything else, they have three strong centers(Toews, Bolland, Sharp) and three solid wings to help them pot goals(Kane, Hossa, and take your pick of Brouwer or Stalberg). Kopecky, their third-line winger, would probably be on first line in Pittsburgh, given their utter lack of wings.

  101. Too bad there is not 33 days remaining until the season, because today, your very own Nasty 1 turns 33 :) It could have been something special! LOL I hope you all have as good a day as I am sure I will.

  102. Orr – I’ll preface this by saying I’m not a fan of Boogaard on this team at all. But watching some of his clips, he does do more than just throw down on the ice. The guy is a NASTY hitter. He flat-out crushes guys. And a lot of times, they don’t get up after he nails them. The other thing I noticed is that he’s pretty crafty about choosing his hits. He’ll wait for the opportune time to sneak behind a guy and floor him. His victims often don’t see it coming. Now, if I’m on the bench and I see one of my teammates getting smelling salts in the corner after a mountain like Boo nailed him, I’m going to be watching when he gets on the ice, and I’m going to make sure I keep watching him. That in and of itself is a nice way to keep the opposition on its heels.

My biggest question about Boo ain’t his fighting or checking. It’s whether the guy can skate. He’s a big dude and I have a feeling he’s going to make Colton Orr look fleet footed. If that’s the case, he’ll be a defensive liability out there and will be about as useful as tits on a bull. But that’s just speculation. Outside of clips, I haven’t seen him play much.

  103. 1. Capitals
    2. Flyers
    3. Penguins
    4. Senators
    5. Devils
    6. Bruins
    7. Sabres
    8. Rangers
    9. Leafs

Discussion – It’s all or nothing with the Caps this year. If they even start to sputter, expect to see wholesale changes in their lineup…I think the Sens have a much improved team with Gonchar and will actually battle it out with the Pens, maybe even over take them for the third seed. The Bruins ‘system’ will hamstring their scoring ability, requiring Raask to really save them in games. They’ll be lucky to hold onto sixth with Julien in the mix as coach.

The seventh through eleventh positions will be a game of musical chairs. All those teams have solid lineups and I think the final standings will have more to do with whose in net. Carolina’s lame defense will make Cam Ward work for his paycheck. The Lighting, while an up and coming team, still has a traffic cone as a goalie(Smith). And I have trouble thinking any team with Adam Hall in the lineup will go far. The Sabres have one of the best goalies in the NHL right now, and their defense is improved with Morisson and Leopold in the lineup. The shocker, I think, will be the Leafs. Gustavsson showed promise last year and Giguere will be splitting time with him. Phaneuf and Komisarek on defense is scary. Now Kessel has Versteeg to take off some pressure. And of course, expect Kadri in the lineup. But in the end, I think the Rangers will squeak into the eight seed for a repeat of the 2009 playoffs.

As for the bottom feeders, they speak for themselves. The most drastic drop will be the hapless Canadiens, who simply don’t have the lineup to do much of anything.
