I’m here, just going to be drunk until euro 2012…next time France will play a meaningful game…. Domenech flat out sucks. He makes slatipuss look like a genius. I really despise that guy almost as much as boyle and briere.

    mama
    You are welcome (hint???)

  2. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

    ILB
thanks man….I think they were karma bitten since the henry handball, but I was hopeful nonetheless.

    Orr
    shhhhh X 2

  3. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

I jsut think teams mirror their coaches. france and domenech=screwy and reclusive with no amount of accountability or teamwork. rangers and torts=inconsistent and flighty. rangers and renney=consistent and predictable.

  4. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

with that glaring hole on our team and in our system of no real banging physical d man, he should be a no brainer to draft with out first pick!!!

  5. I’m not sure the Rangers can afford to wait for him to mature (2-3 years), wicky…

  6. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

In this instance, I really think they should. Guys like him do not come along often. You can find dipsy do scorers every draft. A guy with those skills and 1st pair potential down the road are rare. Dumb move not to draft him!!

  7. CAL

There’s probably a good reason behind it. Maybe he wanted to much of a raise. It was either they lose him for nothing, or lose him for something.

Apparently the two prospects they got from the Blues are halfway decent, according to Blues fans.

Definitely a step back for the Habs. If they lose Plekanec as well, then that will hurt just as much. But, at least they have the Russian mob to help them out. Maybe they’ll force Kovy to sign with them.

  8. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

we have drafted enough forwards the past couple of years, we should use the first two picks on d men (even though they take longer to develop). I mean unless we get an impact forward that will play right away this season (probably not going to happen with the 10th pick) we need to go physical D.

  9. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

I wish they would sign kovy and then trade us lapierre.

  10. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

of course wish in one hand and carcillo in the other and see which one fills up first

NJ twice ,then Detriot twice and then Ottawa twice , ahhhhhhh sure beats going to europe!!!

ORR , dont be so negative. I know I know yer preparing yer self for the disaster to come…but the Rangers wont disapoint this year. We are NOT starting the season with a 0- 25 Piggins and with our system now a little bit older….just maybe we will be on top . We have a pure scorer ,a shut down goalie and a maturing defensive corps.
Rangers look GOOD , really good. Minus a few contracts mind you.

  12. Gabby will either be injured, or show up when he feels like it. Same with half the team.

And Hank might have a new injury this year, that he’ll tell us all aboot next summer.

So much to look forward to!!

I’m only looking forward to Del Z, Artie, Gilly, and maybe some rookies. Aside from that, I really don’t care. This team wont be ready to compete for another 3-4 years…or more!

  13. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Funny how Sather gets rode high N hard and teams like Montreal trade away thier “Halak savour”???? MAKES NO SENSE??? No grumbling how stuiped there GM is.

I got it!!! Why dosnt the Sather haters go find another GM? yeah like pick a new team with the GM of yer choice and cheer on them this year?? Then we will COMPARE notes at the end of the year and see if ya made the right choice. That way I can cheer on my team and have no bickering amoungs the peeps on how our teams sucks with this crappy management. I can solely concentrate on the developement of our teams season. This is gonna be fun!!!

  14. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Orr ,Orr the glass is half full …dont ya see it??

  15. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Guys we really need Mark Messier more then ya think.

Even if hes our GM. Hes a winner ,hes a leader. Messier always found away to win and we need that/his mentality.
This franchise rode shot gun to the Azzlanders in the 80’s and the Rangers we NO where to be found. While Messier was hoisting cups for the Oilers. If it wasnt for Messier and Gretzky ,Glen Sather would be a nobody and this league would have went a different way. Some say SCRAP all of ’em..the whole contigen ..and what ? throw away the past..could do but wasnt it Messier who came here in 1991 and turn this organization into a credible one. Once Messier showed up..things changed!!! Never underestimate the power of the “Mess” . Mark Messier running the Rangers is even cooler then Stevey Y running Tampa!!!Embrace Messier as our GM/President and we will become winners again. He single handedly took our team by its ballz and rode us into the sunset..can’t be all that bad for a guy who so calls “crys alot”.

  16. 3-4 years before we compete lets ride out the contracts of drury and rozival let the kids play and start fresh in 2012-2013.

    ORR
I am just as negative as you. we suck

  17. anyone interested in preseason tix have season tix

selling pair in 300s for all 3 games

cost 112 per game there yours for 70. let me know

  18. “Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini says teams continue to call, inquiring about what it might take to convince Edmonton to trade the first overall pick in next week’s NHL Entry Draft.

Tambellini’s response remains the same; he says he’s not sure what it would take to move such a valuable asset, but he’s willing to listen and consider all offers.”

    http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=324845#YourCallTop

So…who you would trade from the Rangers to get the #1 overall pick? ELITE goalie is excluded from the list of tradable players…

  19. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Orr , if we are tanking for 3 more years then we HAVE to unload Gaborik and Lunqvist to Edmonton for the top pick!!!

  20. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

With the team we have now , we will never be the bottom feeder , theres no way. This is not a tanking team. Never has been and NEVER will. If we let go Hank and gabby then maybe we have a chance to be garbage .

  21. If Boston can get a 2nd overall pick (even if it is through a trade) for a player like Phil Kessel why can’t we offer Gaborik and 10th overall to Edmonton? I mean, from a list of NHL draft picks who were 10th overall draft picks in past NHL drafts only Teemu Selanne turned into a player worth talking about…

Btw, Dan Blackburn went 10th overall in 2001 and we know what happened to him…

    http://www.mynhldraft.com/nhl-draft-picks/10th-overall/100509/

  22. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

I totally agree wtih zzzz on this. We should all atleast wait until after the draft (I think a lot of deals are going to happen) and after the first few days of free agency have gone by. Slats has certainly made some bad decisions, but he has at least rectified some of them. Every gm in the league has bad contracts to deal with, look at the cup winning (winning the cup changes everything right?) blackhawks.

This isn’t meant for anyone specifically, but quit whining and griping about things without at least offering up some reasonable solution. I mean just to come on the blog a whine and bring a bunch of negativity is ridiculous.

  23. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

I think the tanking the season argument is just plain silly. The only thing that matters to dolan is money. The only way to affect his money is to not go to games and not buy rangers merchandise. So everyone that want to “tank the season”, do not ever go to a game again and never ever buy any rangers merchandise and tell all of your friends to do the same thing.

Tanking the season with dolan will do absolutely nothing. I want the rangers to win every possible game they can every possible season and go into the playoffs every season. The last thing I would ever want them to is lose as many games as possible!

  24. pre season tix can be had cheap. why would i pay 70 when i can get a pair for less than half that and sit wherever i want.

  25. CC

I think if Burke knew he was going to have a 2nd overall pick, I don’t think he would have traded it away for Kessel.

He’ll never admit it. Kessel is good, but he’s one ball short of a complete man!

It’ll be worse if they have another bad year, and the B’s get yet another top 5 pick.

  26. Tanking the season is such a dumb idea it isn’t really worth discussing. Do you really think players are going to go out there every night trying to lose just so that they can get a top draft pick? Do you think a guy like Prospal (if he’s still with the team) is going to tank the season so that he can be replaced by a high draft pick? It’s not just a dumb idea it’s absolutely ridiculous.

  27. CHARLIE

I actually meant they have 3-4 bad seasons like the Oilers had this year.

I don’t actually mean deliberately lose games. I need to use a different word, but with the way the team plays, it feels like it’s deliberate.

  28. Olga Folkyerself on

wicky- It’s absolutely true that winning the cup changes everything… How many times did you hear that Smith traded Rangers youth or future for the ’94 Cup? And how many Ranger fans would defend every trade, because it might have been the one that “won us the Cup”? Or conversely, Ranger fans state “would you rather have Amonte, and Weight or the ’94 Cup?”

There is nothing like success to show what a great GM you are. Or ten years with only two playoff series wins to show how incompetent you are.

FIRE SATHER. That’s my solution… NOT tanking the season. Tanking justifies bad play and bad play leads to a losing attitude, and a losing attitude breeds more failure.

  29. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

    olga
I’ll be honest, I would be very shocked if slatipuss is ever fired by dolan. The only way dolan would fire him is if he started losing money, which would bring me back to one of my previous posts, and that just will not happen. Ranger fans will not quit going to games or buying ranger merchandise. So, slats is here until he wants to go or messier takes over (the only person I think dolan would replace slats with and mess is slat’s buddy so I doubt that he will invoke a hostile takeover so to speak). sorry, I just don’t think firing slatipuss is an option, for all our sakes I hope I’m wrong!

  30. 2010-2011 season is on the way! I’m busting out my vuvuzela when you guys play us at the rock. Come get some!!!

  31. Olga Folkyerself on

Still, Sather’s departure, however accomplished, is IMO, the single most important move that will significantly affect the Rangers future ability to contend for the Cup.

I firmly believe this to be the case, thus my earlier pronouncement that I cannot support Rangers as my #1 team as long as Sather remains. When Sather is finally gone, I will be rejoicing as much as any other Ranger fan would. I just hope I outlast him…

  32. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Quite the Game 7 going on right now. I just tuned in to watch the 2nd half and Boston is up by 5. Great game ,lots of intensity. Im not a basketball fan but if I were , The Lakers are my team!! Come on CB!!!

  33. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

    4th Quarter , 2 pt game now!!!

  34. Olga Folkyerself on

Real Culprit- True enough, you need an owner that looks past the profit margin. But Sather is the “brains” (read: Carcillo for brains) of the Rangers, and if you have someone that knows what they are doing as President of the Rangers, then progress could be made with the team. Dolan knows nothing, Sather SHOULD know what he’s doing… he doesn’t.

It still boils down to FIRE SATHER!

  35. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Olga , like you really know what is what …Your ignorence twards Sather is quite amusing. You honestly think if we fire him ,all is LALALAAA in Ranger land? Are you for real?
Your hate for the Blackhawks ownership years ago lead you to this team again…When are you ever gonna be happy with any of yer teams managers?

  36. If Slats goes, nothing will change, unless the new GM has the balls to step up and get rid of the losers on this team.

Just going to have to wait until the three big contracts are up. Then we are in semi better shape.

  37. Olga Folkyerself on

“nothing will change, unless the new GM has the balls to step up and get rid of the losers on this team.”

That is EXACTLY what I would hope to see from a competent GM. As long as President Sather is gone so he can’t overrule him. It will take at least three years to undo what Sather has done to this team.

  38. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ITS OVER ITS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SWEET 16!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. I LOVE LIFE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FINALLY NO MORE BOSTON TEAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. Olga Folkyerself on

Greg- Do you like Sather? Is he doing the job for you? Are you happy with the last ten years as a Ranger Fan? Are you confident of the next ten with Sather at the helm? Is there someone out there that could do a better job in running the Rangers?

I sure think so. I know what I’ve seen over the last ten years, and I’m not satisfied. We need someone that knows how to run a franchise. Sather is at the Cap maximum with a ninth place team. It will not be all LALA land when Sather finally goes. as I said above, it will take some time to undo what Sather has saddled this team with. I don’t want to give Sather the chance to undo his own mistakes with NEW mistakes.

    Bring on the next guy.

  41. I love you Olga! I love all you guys! The Rangers will be lifting the Cup around this time next year! I ******** GUARANTEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. And one more thing…i absolutely HATE it when these athletes call themselves World Champions… Baseball and Basketball… its fargin DUMB! You want to see WORLD Championship? Turn on ESPN every morning and watch THE REAL WORLD CUP!

  43. Lifting what?

They dragging… 3 awful contracts behind them…but they definitely not lifting anything any time soon

  44. And the refs did hand it to the Lakers in the 4th quarter.

It was real, and it was SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The refs did something right for once in their lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you refs!

  45. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

The game was officiated fairly Cr9 ,They have fricking instant replays on the fouls!!!! Crazy sport but a great game .

Olga ,If Sather got fired then its like admitting we were wrong .Dolan will not fire him ,he may RETIRE him but not fire him. Stop acting the fool and get over it already or I’ll start up the “bad ice” carp. Messier will be our next GM and our youth will grow up. The team is BIGGER then Sather so Relax Olga. Sather is a gambler…He takes chances and sometimes it really screwed us up..I Know , I know it infuriate me too but Sather always gets his man. Always. He is a smart GM and is a builder in the NHL. To knock him like you do is so un classy. He makes me mad at times too and when he goes ..I’ll love this team the same.

  46. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Good job haha I almost said Colby Bryant…but its Kobe Bryant!!!!! WTG Lakers!!! KOBE is ELITE!!!

  47. Olga Folkyerself on

Greg- I’d like to see things from your point of view but no one else can get their head that far up their rear end. Fans like you deserve Sather. Start up whatever bull-carcillo you want, you’ll only be confirming my opinion of you.

  48. Olga Folkyerself on

I’d LOVE for Sather to go to the Bruins, or the Devils, or to the Devil.

  49. What a great night! I dont think Im ever going to sleep again! Time to actually enjoy the World Cup! Germany in 2 hours.

  50. Thank the lord for the world cup – its definately keeping me entertained this summer and distracting me from the boring hockey offseason. England tonight so big day today. Draft next weekend, Free Agency July 1st, World Cup finishes by mid-June then 2 months of nothing!

As for Sather, he could retire/get fired tomorrow but his legacy is around for a few more years (2 more of Roszi and Drury, 4 more of Redden). The important things this offseason are for Gordie Clark to find some talent than can be NHL ready in 2 seasons or less and Slats to try and move or demote one of those contracts in order for us to sign a big bodied tough defenseman and maybe a #1 center too.

  51. Well, in the end, I closed my eyes at 5:30 on the couch – for what was supposed to be a minute – and lights out I went! Not that I’ve got any lights on to begin with :)

This is such a joyous day. A sparkling morning of sunlight and bright futures and hope. How lucky we all are to be fans of the greatest hockey team in the world in the greatest city in the world.

I figured out – as I woke up this morning – what the Rangers need to succeed. Get rid of Sweet Caroline. It’s just not good karma to have a song the same as the Red Sox.

  52. Hw many of you will be up and watching USA vs Slovenia with your breakfast tomorrow?

Get the vuvuzelas out and it won’t matter what they are playing – Sweet Caroline, Metallica, Napalm Death you won’t hear a thing…!!

  53. oops i meant today – you’re on now!!!

Clint Dempsey (sounds like he should be a TV detective) just “Brasheared” a Slovenian player

  54. …the only way USA are getting through to the last 16 now is (either a remarkable 2nd half comeback or) if England draw against Algeria and USA beat Algeria in their last group game and Slovenia beat England – thats a lot of if’s!!

  55. Donovan’s not over-rated – he’s the only creative player on the US team, the midfield are too workmanlike.

    Game On!!

  56. Slovenia plays very physical… i remember that playoff game against Russia…they pushed, pulled and trip Russian side all over the pitch…

  57. Lots of opinions saying this is possibly the best game of the World Cup so far – and its not one i would have picked out from the fixture list.

USA look most likely to score next, but don’t rule Slovenia out, they are the reason the Russian’s arent at this world cup..

  58. I don’t know about this being the best game played so far but this is definitely the worst officiating game of the tournament…

That was a good goal disallowed!

  59. Questionable refereeing throughout the tournament so far – harsh sending off for Klose today after 2 innocuous trips, south African goalie shouldnt have been sent off either.

This game could still go either way.

  60. >>Donovan’s not over-rated – he’s the only creative player on
    >>the US team, the midfield are too workmanlike.

Actually, I don’t see much creativity in Donovan’s game. What he has going for him is his incredible quickness.

  61. >>I couldn’t even sit through 2 minutes of that game.

It sounds like you have serious attention problems.

  62. you won’t watch futbol but you’ll watch baseball?

This is what separates this game from every other team sport…the game is 90 minutes long…that’s it…the OT is used only in games that actually mean something

  63. With a net the size of a small house you’d think they would score 10 goals each.

    —–

Apparently, it’s not that easy :P

  64. “you won’t watch futbol but you’ll watch baseball?”

I only watch Feetball and Baseball if I’m trying to go to sleep.

“It sounds like you have serious attention problems”

No just easily bored while watching things that are slow and boring, like Feetball, Soccer, Golf, Bowling, etc.

  65. >>you won’t watch futbol but you’ll watch baseball?

    >>the OT is used only in games that actually mean something

Hey, baseball is the great American “pastime”.

It must also be said that overtime in the World Cup is not sudden death. Two fifteen minutes halves are played all the way through, whether goals are scored or not. If there’s a still a tie after the those thirty minutes, then we go to the infamous penalty kicks.

  66. bull dog line on

let me start by saying, I really like soccer. I was a big Cosmos fan back in the day, and before the English Premiere became really popular, I rooted for Man City, and the Queens Park Rangers. but comparing soccer to baseball is not that close.Baseball is a great sport played by great atheletes. strategy, skill, speed, and power. a great sport to play and watch.
I think you guys dislike it so much because you can’t play it.
one big problem with international tournaments, and you saw it the USA game, the referees are not always unbiased. many poor calls against the USA.

  67. America’s past time = Victoria’s Secret Supermodel Show

“I think you guys dislike it so much because you can’t play it”

I have no desire to watch Feetball, or to play Feetball. It’s just that boring. Even Basketball. I was really good at basketball, but it was just so boring to me that I was half asleep during games I played for my school.

    Hockey-Woman’s Tennis-Woman’s Vollyball! Enough said.

Football is decent, but they have too many criminals in the “National Felons League”

  68. Oh, and in the spirit of Ron Artest thanking his psychiatrist last night…

I’d like to thank my psychologist for helping me get through these past 2 months. Physically and Mentally Draining 2 months. The guy must love me! He answered every one my phone calls after 11 pm when the Celtics won games! I owe the guy a better present than Yankees 2009 World Series gear this time. Any thoughts?

  69. bull dog line

I did not compare futbol to baseball… I just used baseball as an example of a much slower game than futbol…and baseball is not an ELITE game. :)

  70. CCCP, lol! He has helped me with a number of issues, including my ex, but I think he knows he’ll never change my Boston views. Even though I truly do try and want to stop hating them.

  71. bull dog line on

    CCCP,
Baseball is an ELITE game in the USA, but it certainly not the ELITE game world wide that futbol is. now hockey, that is truly and ELITE game.

  72. Hockey is disrespected. It’s by far a better sport than the NBA. But gets little respect. Shame.

  73. I don’t know what is going to happen with the draft this year, but let’s just hope they pick some winners. I haven’t really been on in a while with the end of the school year taking up so much of my time, but I am off now, so I hope to be on more. Hope everyone is doing well. It is going to be interesting to see what this team does moving forward. I am not reading too much in to what Sather said in his Brooks interview a few weeks back. Torts said the same crap last year. It is hard to take either of them seriously anymore. Until the walk the walk and truly and honestly bench and get rid of players, no matter who they are, this team is not going to be taken seriously, and nobody on the team is going to respect or fear either of them. I like Torts, but I was let down that he didn’t really didn’t bench anyone but rookies and Redden.

  74. Yeah, I know that, but the kind of accountability that he talked about, was not really practiced.

  75. Hockey is a Canadian game. That’s the only reason why nobody cares aboot it in America.

Americans don’t give a flying Byfuglien aboot the Canadian Crosby, or the Russian Ovechkin, etc.

There’s a lot of great American players in the NHL, but none stand out like those two do.

And the day that one shows up, that team will have so many bandwagon fans.

    I hope it’s NYR, cause we need a Crosby/Ovechkin.

    Elite FTW!

  76. NHL-readiness is a tricky business. There are numerous factors to consider, including organizational depth, the physical readiness of the prospect and even the willingness of the prospect to sign a contract (or just come across the Atlantic Ocean). But with that caveat there are certainly players in every draft class who are closer to making their NHL debut than others. Today we’re going to take a look at the top eight such players, and as we’ll explain later in the blog, age is not as big a factor as you’d think. Experience, however, is.

The cut-off date for age-group hockey is Jan. 1. For the NHL draft it’s Sept. 15 — a player must be age 18 by Sept. 15 of the given year to be eligible for the draft. Sept. 16? No dice. Those born from Sept. 16 through December 31 are “late birthdays.” They have to wait a year to be drafted.

Taylor Hall, for example, would have been a top pick in last year’s draft — the 1991 birthdays — but he was born on Nov. 14 of that year, so he had to wait.

Now, you might not think he’d be at a significant advantage being a few months older than some kids, but if we’re talking about readiness for the next level — not about who’ll be the best player five years from now, but rather who’ll be best able to step into the NHL next fall — Taylor Hall (Nov. 14, 1991) has a huge advantage over Tyler Seguin (Jan. 31, 1992).

Hall has played three years of major junior (including two Memorial Cup championships), a world under-18 tournament as an under-ager (gold), a summer U-18s (gold) and a world junior tournament (silver). Seguin has two years of major junior (getting as far as the second round of the playoffs each year) and a summer under-18s (gold). Hall has played a lot more hockey at this point than Seguin, thus the consensus among scouts is that Hall’s more NHL-ready than Seguin — not that Seguin can’t step into a NHL line-up next season, just that Hall’s better prepared. Effectively, he has spent a lot more time going to school.

It doesn’t have to play out this way; September-born John Tavares “played up” in major junior at age 15. He had four years in the OHL compared to Matt Duchene’s two, but Duchene is a finalist for the Calder Trophy that will be handed out next week. That’s not a judgment on who will be the better player in the long run, but it underlines the fact that sometimes the very best players can step into the NHL with a couple of years of major junior or, in some cases, only one. Still, the more experience you have at this level, the better your chances for success.

Besides Hall and Seguin, the likely No. 1 and No. 2 picks in some order and most NHL-ready prospects in the class, the six other prospects most ready to step right in are:

    Cam Fowler
Hall’s teammate with the Windsor Spitfires was a late birthday with the USDT in 2008-09 and by the reckoning of most scouts he was the best prospect on the roster of a team that won the world under-18s. With a Dec. 5, 1991 birthday, he had to wait until this year’s draft to go pro and squeezed in as much hockey as you possibly could over that stretch, including a turn with the U.S. team that won the world juniors. Another player who followed that development track was Patrick Kane, who stepped right into a Calder Trophy.

Getty ImagesCam Fowler could be in the NHL shortly, as well.

The blueline is a tougher proposition than playing up front but some can do it — Drew Doughty did with L.A. two years ago and Dmitry Kulikov did it under the radar with Florida this season. Others are in that number as well. The other top blueline prospects, Kingston’s Erik Gudbranson and Moncton’s Brandon Gormley, have another year of major junior and some international experience as well, but Fowler has packed a lot more into the last 20 months or so.

    Mikael Granlund
He’s not a late birthday (Feb. 26, 1992) but Granlund is a teenager who’s playing up with pros in the Finnish league. He was almost a point-per-game player there and it’s not clear how much more Central Scouting’s top-ranked Euro needs to prove at that level. And scouts working the under-18s said that he was old for his age — closer to a pro than a prospect in the way he carried himself. He’d have to land with a NHL team that could find him 12 to 14 minutes a night; he doesn’t seem to be big enough or have the game to play in a third line.

    Vladimir Tarasenko
This is just pure theory. He isn’t going to play in the NHL next season and who knows when or even if he’ll end up in North America. But make no mistake, Tarasenko could come over tomorrow and step into a NHL line-up. He’s a late-birthday (Dec. 13, 1991), so he played in the 2009 under-18s and then played for Novosibirsk in the KHL, putting up 13 goals and 11 assists in 42 games in a low-scoring league. The great fear for bringing in kids straight out of the draft is injury — even big guys like Ilya Kovalchuk and Rick Nash suffered injuries playing at 18. That wouldn’t be a worry with Tarasenko. At the combine he showed he already has a pro body; at 5-foot-11 and over 200 lean pounds, he’s a bowling ball, more likely to inflict damage than take it. But again, it’s theory. It could happen if the stars lined up, but they’re not going to.

    Austin Watson
Unlike Granlund, Watson is made to measure for third- and fourth-line duty while doing his apprenticehip. He’s big enough (6-foot-3 and 190 pounds) and game enough to throw out on the wing and go to school on the pro game. Other Peterborough juniors who made that step up: Eric Staal, Jordan Staal and Zach Bogosian.

    Nino Niederreiter
The big Swiss winger with the Portland Winter Hawks is the farthest thing from the late-birthdays who have advantages going into this draft. In fact, if he had born a bit more than a week later, he would be eligible for next year’s draft. Still, some high draft choices have gone to their first NHL training camps right after their 18th birthdays and left major junior behind: Patrick Marleau and Jordan Staal come to mind. Niederreiter had a great world juniors and despite a very ordinary combine he physically seems up to the challenge. Again, like with Granlund it would come down to fit.

    Justin Shugg
Every once and a while someone breaks out of the second round to a spot in a NHL roster straight out of the draft. Patrice Bergeron is a notable case. Ryan O’Reilly did it last year with Colorado. My best candidate for this is the LW Shugg, another kid with the Windsor Spitfires, a late birthday (Dec. 24, 1991) who has played a ton of hockey over the past three years and racked up 39 goals and 40 assists in 67 regular-season games in 2009-10. He was great for Windsor in the ’09 Memorial Cup; you could have made a compelling case that he and not Hall deserved the MVP award in that tournament. Shugg is the 53rd-ranked North American skater, according to Central Scouting. Windsor is the closest thing to a pro team and Shugg’s numbers are pretty impressive when you consider he was a second-line player.

Gladwell misses the mark … to a degree

You’ve probably read the terms “early birthday” and “late birthday” thrown around in this blog a bit. A couple of years back, Malcolm Gladwell came out with a book, “The Outliers,” which looked at the hidden advantages enabling many folks to succeed and unseen handicaps that held others back. Within the book, he cited a Canadian study by psychologist Roger Barnsley that showed players born in the first three months of a calendar year hold an advantage over those born later in the year and that a far greater number of players are born in January and February rather than in June and July.

Barnsley tagged this phenomenon as “relative age” and he and Gladwell put it down to the fact that Jan. 1 is the cut-off date for age-group hockey in this country [Canada]. (The same is true throughout Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.) Those who aren’t born near the start of the year are presumed to be at a competitive disadvantage when they’re starting out in hockey due to different rates of physical development.

There’s a couple of things wrong with this theory. For one thing, whether they’re age 8, 10 or 12 — the ages when the advantages of “relative age” should be predominant — the very best kids aren’t playing against others in their birth year; rather, they’re “playing up” a year or two. That’s true if they were born in January or, like Sidney Crosby, in August. The thinking behind ‘playing up’ is that the very best young players need not to dominate they’re peers but be challenge by better players and try to catch up.

The stars don’t usually conform to the rule. As I noted, Crosby was born in August, Alex Ovechkin in September, Evgeni Malkin on July 31 and Drew Doughty in December. This year’s Stanley Cup-winning goal was scored by November-born Patrick Kane. Last year’s top two picks in the draft, John Tavares and Victor Hedman, were born in September and December, respectively. Yeah, Gretzky was born in January but Lemieux was October. Long story short, those born in January have some advantages along the way to making it to the pros, but a lot of others who go on to be stars do it despite the disadvantage of late birthdays. (Or maybe because of them.)

  77. >>England begins! Roooooooney!

England AND Rooney look quite unimpressive thus far. It wouldn’t surprise me if Algeria took full points from this match.

  78. Instead of having an All Star game, they should have a game against the NHL’s top players and the best rookies of the draft, before the draft.

That would be fun to watch.

All Star games are just so boring. I’d rather see rookies get beat up, and embarrassed, or see the All Stars lose to a bunch of babies.

  79. I cant see England losing this game – on Capello’s birthday also. It would be ridiculous if England did anything but take full points.

  80. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

that was horrible officiating in the US game for sure.

I quite honestly do not understand how anyone can enjoy watching baseball or basketball for that matter. I mean just about any sport is enjoyable to play to some degree if you are competitive, but watching some of them (add golf to the two listed above) is just an absolute bore whether it is a championship or not.

I think most americans do not like soccer/futbol because similar to hockey, they do not understand the game.

Would anyone one here trade dubinsky for burns??

  81. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

man, valentenko hasn’t played much hockey the past couple of seasons

  82. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

    Orr
I think I would as well, him and girardi!!!

  83. So, England doesn’t have a better striker than Heskey? I’d rather have Wright-Phillips on the pitch than that guy.

  84. How did Defoe get on the roster? I thought they left him off for Heskey?

Heskey is more of a table setter than scorer. i.e. His pass to Gerrard for goal 1 versus US.

WAKE UP CALL TO TORTS :

Chris Drury is too small to be our Captain. Come on Torts make the switch!!! Drury plays on the 3rd line…he not even nasty at all!!! He leads us by blocking shots…thats it. No clutch goals,No clutch fights,no clutch hitz ,no clutch anything. The fact we have a pint size captain is purely embarassing. How can we play beasts like the Flyers when mini me is our captain!!??? Give it to Dubinsky..hes our “Crosby,Mike Richards”…hes our young horse. I bet he does more with it then Drury ever did. Come on Sather ,bring in Messier and appoint Dubi our new leader!!!

  86. Didn’t Drury play baseball once? I think I heard about it somewhere.

Enough about England. It’s depressing enough without having to read about it here too…

  87. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

I can’t help but think how much of a difference avery makes when he can play his game without worrying about being benched or penalized by his coach. He makes everyone play with more of an edge on his roster because he gets the other team so fired up they want to kill everyone in the avery colored jersey. If you are a teammate of avery’s, you are like wholly crap, i need to defend my teammates and myself or you can pull a girardi and do neither.

  88. ZzZz NYR ZzZzllo " Bring on the season already!!! " … says Greg L. on

Lets seriously think about this. Drury’s contract is so huge , it makes his time here uncomfortable and I think even he knows “the writing is on the wall” . We know he wont be here that much longer and we are NOT building the team around him.

Who are we building the team around anyways?

Dubinsky? If so give him the “C” NOW!!

Not Hank , never got him his Crease clearing hard-hitting defenseman.

Not Gaborik..yet , He never had anyone besides Old man Prospal to play with…but then niether does Crosby.

We are building this team around Staal and delzotto. Period and Hank is THIER help ,Not Them being Hanks if ya get my drift?

It has to be. Why else is Drury floating around from line to line and Gaborik plays with …Prospal? Hank gets young guys to work with so hes not the focus.( you reading this ORR?) It is oviously Staalsie ,dezotto and throw in Girardi.

Our main core is our defensive group including Hank. All four of ’em. Everyone else is expedible. This is what Im reading into and is not fact mind you. Our team is being build from the defense up .

When teams cant score on the Rangers and then POP POP POP Gaborik scores a few. Look out. With our youth to come too.
This team is constantly maturing and being built . Our time will come. Trust me.

  89. I’ve been thinking about about comparing futbol to hockey.
“I think most americans do not like soccer/futbol because similar to hockey, they do not understand the game.”
I think most Americans don’t like futbol not because they don’t understand it but it’s like boring slow motion hockey.
A 0-0 game in hockey has more action than a nil nil futbol game. This world cup futbol has been pretty lousy thus far.
The defence has been so so and the offense has been absent talk about boring. I’m waiting for the draft a crease clearing defenseman and a scoring center. I’m sick of going for the best available player they never pan out!

  90. Hey, do you think the kid sitting behind Drury in the picture is a Ranger fan? He appears to be giving Drury a real dirty look. : )

  91. Good evening all! Phew, what a day. Is everyone as happy it’s Friday as me!

    tomb, excellent find.
    EddieJ, excellent response.
wicky, once again, love your enthusiasm! Especially love your post at 6:47 :)

I think soccer and hockey have this in common in the U.S. Yeah, all the little kids play soccer, so what. Both sports are not fully understood in league play, both are low scoring, and both get ignored by mainstream media except for WC and SC. So somehow that translates into a blase attitude.

Of course, I think that’s stupid.

Notice how the U..S. only cares about soccer during World Cup? When else do ever hear about the U.S. team?

OK, those are my thoughts/rant for the night. Just wanted to pop in. I’m tremendously tremendously beat. wicky, I may not even have one wicky left in me…..TA?

  92. dang, I did it….just when I thought I was safe…

dunno CthreeP. possibly at Subway Series, possibly at some other assignment, possibly just not wanting to deal with you all!

I totally kid on that last point, obviously. I just think he’s in the work soup, and it’s a slow time here….you know blogfather, he’ll be back, and soon, and when there’s news….or could be he’s just parading around his neighborhood in his boneheads shirt :)

  93. Oops. Forgot one thing (wicky, does not count. I just forgot in previous post). Sister blog fans, awesome new post if I do say myself….Goodnight all, and Maryellen. Have a great weekend. I intend to :)

  94. Give Dubi the “C”?? Bwahahaha!! Yeah, right!

Fugg that. The last thing his ego needs is the captaincy. Give it to a leader. Give it to someone who *SHOWS* *UP* 82 games in the season, and throughout the playoffs, and leads by example.

Give the “C” to Del Z. Any man that can wear two leather jackets at the same time on a summer day in Boston *deserves* the “C”!

  95. I dont know carcillo! on

from outsidethegarden.comSo far this offseason, Rangers GM Sather has been busy with making their 1st trade with their rival Islanders since 1972, signed forward Stepan early out of college, resigned Hartford Captain Byers, and has Gordie Clark and his staff primed for next fridays draft. The question is, will the Rangers do anything else before the draft? The rumors are swirling that he has 1 more ace up his sleeve.

Rumors from 3 different sources out of Wisconsin have a defenseman named Joe Faust decommitting to Princeton University and committing to Wisconsin. Adding this defenseman makes over 9 for this years roster. Wisconsin coach Eaves allegedly “went off” on Stepan (assistant captain) for leaving for the Rangers after he went on their local radioi station and said he was returning for his Junior year. So after seeing that, you could understand that McDonagh would want the coach to have the team covered for his early exit, especially since he was named the captain. Now that the team is covered with players, it is expected and rumored that McDonagh will announce his turning pro soon.

Gordie Clarke and his staff are hard at work with either scouting during the season, or evn up to yesterday still interviewing possible draftees such as Tarasenko. The Rangers are scheduled to pick 10th, but look for Sather to move that pick. The Rangers are looking to draft Nino Niederreiter, a big right wing that could go anywhere from 4th -8th. Look for the Rangers to move up early as the Rangers draft party says to come early, as “the Rangers are expected to draft within the 1st hour”.

If the Rangers could get 2 of the following players, it would be another HUGE draft to follow up the last couple of years. The Rangers center position needs size and speed. Draftees fitting this profile are Ryan Johansen,Nick Bjugstad,Riley Sheahan, and Nelson Brock. At right wing the top sight is on Nino Niederrreiter, but they should also look at Jeff Skinner. At leftr wing, the Rangers should look at Jersey native Ken Agostino from Delbarton high school in New Jersey. The defensemen that would fit the Rangers needs are early 1st round pick Erik Gudbranson and anywhere from 20-40 pick in Jared Tinordi, a HUGE intimidating dman that is worth the Rangers trading up for in the 2nd round for.

So the Rangers core players such as Lundqvist, Staal, DelZotto, Girardi, Callahan, Dubinsky, Gaborik, Anisimov, and Avery, along with future prospects expected to make an impact such as Grachev, Weise, Stepan, McDonagh, and a couple others, shows that the youth movement promised may have taken LONGER than expected, but has FINALLY arrived.

  96. Here I am, CCCP. Up to my freakin’ eyes in non-Rangers work.

Hope to do some draft stuff next week. Hope being the key word.

    Good night, Sally!

ORR , yoooohooooooo ORR!! Dont believe all that “Dubi” is greedy stuff. Its all rumours. Dubinsky is the man. He needs his ego!!!! He sure took Richards and dragged him to the ice!!!Didnt he!??. WE need Dubinsky even more cuz hes better now!!!! Yeah hes more mature. Kinda like you on this blog my friend. Now that yer older ( its like we grew up together awww) Yer better. Ya used to be all Megan Fox this ,Megan Fox that but now ya have moved on to older and sexier chicks. See ORR time changes peeps and this time Dubinsky is gonna have one heck of a year and maybe you’ll get one heck of a girlfriend.

  99. 20 years old’s shouldn’t have girlfriends. That’s what my dad always says.

And Dubi is greedy, and only cares aboot money. Facts are facts, and he already proved it. Now, lets see if Staal will do the same thing, and try to cash in on his last name.

And Dubi got lucky in that fight. How many other times did he get bullied before that fight?

Dubi is not a leader at all. He’s just a Graves wannabe who will never be half the player he was.

Actually, isn’t this upcoming season the last on his contract? Greg, I wouldn’t get so attached. He only signed two years so he can play two short years with Butt-Chin Gabby, and then cash in somewhere else.

That wouldn’t surprise me one bit. It’s all aboot the money! Nothing more, nothing less.

  100. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

    zzzzzz
i would not want dubi as captain quite honestly. I do not think he shows up every night at this point. He sure didn’t show up during the carcillo gabby incident (when the d man I wanted but everyone else here said sucked, was holding him with one arm while carcillo started to go after gabby, yes the refs jumped in, still pretty weak and almost girardi like). I think he held out when he shouldn’t have per his contract and seems to be a bit of a prima donna. If he has to play with a superstar offencive guy to play hard and physical, that is the last guy I want as my captain. Yep, he beat richards pretty handily in the flyers game, but then brash beat orr in the first toronto game.

I’d rather have prust as our captain.

  101. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

also, there was a tweet a little while ago about the panthers were going to make some trades next week and the panther gm had talked to several teams about horton.

  102. I agree. I’d much rather have Prust as the Cappy.

I tried to give him a chance, but after the Gabby incident [which Gabby deserved] it added my fuel to the fiery hatred I have for Dublowsky.

Nothing but talk. What did he do? He didn’t get tough, nope, he didn’t even score a fuggin goal, or help out at all. Loser!

The only person who deserves the “C” is Hank. I don’t think anybody should get it though. Let’s go back to having nobody wear it, like in 05-06.

  103. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

back on the dubi thing for a minute, when avery fought carcillo later in the game, most of the players (even drury) on the bench seemed pretty stoked and dubi was just sitting there like yeah, so what, when he should have been reacting like voros was or some of the other guys did. At least that is what I would expect him to do if he was more of a leader.

  104. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

I think dubi is a good player, but at this point I think he is over hyped and has not shown me much leadership or consistent heart at all.

I’d rather have heatly, spezza, jack johnson, or brent burns than dubi anytime (sorry sally)

  105. I’d trade Dublowsky for Johnson in a heart beat. Spezza is a lot of cash, but he could go nice with Gabby. And I was on the fence with the potential Heatley-Dubi+ deal, but I’d take it now, depending on who else would be in the deal.

As for Burns, I’m not sure. I get nervous with players and concussions. Except Booth, cause he’s an American.

    USAAA!!

  106. wicky (draft Dylan McIlrath in the first round!!) on

    good night orr and zzzzz

    good night grandpa!

  107. Yeah…Let’s bring an outsider and give him the “C”! Just like we always do…why promote your own, right? I just don’t get this hating on Dubi

Obviously Callahan would make a great captain of this team but Dubi deserves to be a captain as well…he’s got guts and can play… yeah…he doesn’t show up for ALL 82 games…but who does?! Name one player on this team who showed up for all 82 games… and you can’t say Callahan!

How come nobody talks about Gaborik? He got injured AGAIN and during most important time of the season he was completely invisible…which probably cost us play-off spot. Why would this upcoming season be any different? I say, trade Gaborik instead of Dubi…

  108. It would seem to be a bit unusual to regret not having made the playoffs last season, for any reason at all, considering the lowly state of their capabilities during the season, right up to the very end.

There were so many factors that led up to costing them a playoff spot that zeroing in on any one of them as the cause, seems to overlook the fact that at least it did provide the team a more fortunate draft position. Small favors indeed, but better than the embarrassment of being totally wiped out in the first playoff round – and that would seem to have been their fate had they actually squeezed by.
