PROCEEDS TO HELP REBUILD GRACE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
…Dan Hamhuis, Georges Laraque, NHLPA and World Vision Canada visit Haitian hospital for announcement
PORT-AU-PRINCE/ TORONTO (June 9, 2010) — The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and World Vision Canada announced today that more than $1 million has been raised through “Hockey for Haiti” to help rebuild a children’s hospital that was badly damaged in the January 12 earthquake. Dan Hamhuis of the Nashville Predators and NHL veteran Georges Laraque, along with officials from the NHLPA and World Vision Canada visited the Grace Children’s Hospital in Port-au-Prince today to meet with patients, families and staff to share the good news.
The money was raised through “Hockey for Haiti”, a joint initiative of Haitian-Canadian Georges Laraque, the NHLPA and World Vision Canada. It began with an initial donation of $100,000 from NHLPA Goals & Dreams. The NHL also donated $100,000 to this very worthy cause. Private donations, plus all proceeds from the NHLPA’s current auction of Olympic hockey jerseys and recent online auction of unique hockey memorabilia, have brought the total amount raised to help rebuild the hospital past the million-dollar mark.
Grace Children’s Hospital, operated by International Child Care, is one of Haiti’s leading pediatric centres dedicated to the treatment of children with tuberculosis, HIV and other diseases. However, the cracked and crumbling facility is now unsafe to enter, and the inpatient ward is closed. The hospital’s staff is currently running an outpatient clinic from tents in the yard.
As part of the NHLPA’s ongoing online auction of 140 Olympic jerseys worn by NHL players during the 2010 Olympics, Team Russia and Czech Republic jerseys are on sale now – including the “White” jersey worn by Alexander Ovechkin in Russia’s February 18th game against Slovakia. All proceeds will benefit “Hockey for Haiti”. Over $150,000 has been raised through the NHLPA’s Olympic jersey auction to date. Hockey fans still looking to obtain a piece of hockey history, while also bringing hope to Haitian children, can bid on Olympic jerseys at www.nhlpa.com/auctions. The auction runs until mid-June. Fans can also make a donation directly to “Hockey for Haiti” through www.worldvision.ca/hockey.

I think the Garden was the loudest in the 99 EC Finals, Pacers/Knicks Game 3, iirc, the Larry Johnson 4 point play. The overhead camera angle has to be one of my favorite video captures of all time.
That and the Tino Grand Slam to put the Yanks up 4 runs against the Padres in Game 1 of the 1998 Series. That was a great overhead capture of people spilling beer out of excitement on everyone else!

I have been looking over the draft prospect for the upcoming draft, and 1 name keeps standing out to me for the Rangers, Brett Connolly. He is highly rated, but could drop to the Rangers because of injury concern. He fits a big need, he is a scorer.

The NHLPA should be praised for their work with Haiti. Unfortunately, this hospital will need much more than $1 mil to rebuild, but it’s a great start.

It’s beginning to look as though sheer size is not the greatest attribute a player can have as things are shaping up. Teams looking for somebody 6 foot twelve, and then find out that he goes down he goes hard when he does go down, and many of them can’t get out of their own way. Tie Domi was a tough little Albanian but he had a great career…and there may have been guys as tough but none tougher.
Rocky Marciano retired as heavyweight champion undefeated, and he took on all comers and sizes. He weighed in at about 185 -188, and stood probably 6 feet but not much more. He was an awesome battler. But it is said that he measured 8 inches around his wrists ( like Bobby Hull). And when he hit, guys went down and often didn’t get back up.
Look for overall toughness and skating and good hands. ( a bit of brain power wouldn’t hurt either.

The Stanley Cup does NOT come around too often in most cases and if players think they will be back ..think again . The chance to lift Lord Stanley’s mug is pure jubilation and the feeling of being the “BEST” in hockey and being a part of the great tradition to what we call The Stanley Cup playoff drive. wicky- It was impossible for the Rangers to win the Cup this year. They weren’t even good enough to compete. This year, or the last 10 years. A team can take a bad signing in stride, like Campbell, (which I don’t necessarily concede) or Redden. But Sather also saddled us with Drury, Rozival, Brashear, Gomez, etc, etc, etc for the past 10 years.
The Black Hawks stunk as a franchise due to old man Wirtz basically saying Eff You to all the fans in Chicago. Yes, they got a number of high draft picks but it was Rocky Wirtz that opened up the purse strings, brought the fans back and gave them a chance to win. And they did in a few short years.
